Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nets try to get a win in Orlando, the Hawks meet the Celtics, and Cincinnati tries to stay perfect against West Virginia.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football offers up a pair of games on Friday, with Temple at Akron and West Virginia at No. 5 Cincinnati. The unbeaten Bearcats (9-0 SU, 5-3 ATS) got past Connecticut 47-45 last week, with Zach Collaros going 29-of-37 for 480 yards and a touchdown strike in the win. The Mountaineers (7-2 SU, 2-6 ATS) beat Louisville 17-9 in their last contest. Cincinnati is listed as a 9-point home favorite for Friday's contest, and the total for the game has been set at 54 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are nine games on the NBA's schedule for Friday, including Atlanta at Boston. The Hawks (6-2 SU, 7-1 ATS) won 114-101 in New York in their last game, as Al Horford scored a game-high 25 points and Josh Smith picked up 22 points and 12 rebounds. The Celtics (8-1 SU, 5-4 ATS) had no trouble with Utah last time out, cruising to a 105-86 home win. Kevin Garnett led Boston's attack with 18 points in that victory, while Rajon Rondo added 14 points and 11 assists.

Elsewhere around the NBA on Friday it'll be Utah at Philadelphia, Golden State at New York, Portland at New Orleans, Dallas at Minnesota, Houston at Sacramento, the Lakers at Denver, Toronto at the Clippers, and New Jersey at Orlando. The Nets (0-8 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) remain the only winless team in the league. New Jersey lost 82-79 at home to Philadelphia last time out, with Brook Lopez scoring 23 points and adding 14 assists for the team in that losing cause.

As well, No. 1 Kansas hosts Hofstra on a busy night for college basketball on Friday. It'll also be Florida Gulf Coast at No. 2 Michigan State, Morehead State at No. 4 Kentucky, Fairleigh Dickinson at No. 5 Villanova, N.C. Greensboro at No. 9 Duke, Austin Peay at No. 10 Tennessee, and William & Mary at No. 12 UConn.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games in the National Hockey League on Friday, with the Islanders at Carolina, Minnesota at Washington, Anaheim at Columbus, Calgary at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Atlanta, and Toronto at Chicago. The Maple Leafs are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Wild on Tuesday night, with Jonas Gustavsson allowing four goals on 30 shots. The Hawks slipped past Colorado 3-2 in a shootout on Wednesday, with Patrick Kane and Cam Barker scoring in regulation.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

Big man will be missed

The 1-8 Minnesota Timberwolves will be without leading scorer Al Jefferson for at least the next two games as he has left the team to be with a family member that has fallen ill.

Although Jefferson has struggled in his return from offseason knee surgery, Minnesota will sorely miss his presence down low as it tries to halt an eight-game losing streak in which it went 3-5 ATS.

They will host Dallas as 11-point underdogs Friday. The total is set at 196.

Jazzing things up?

Deron Williams tweeted that, "We got to change something bc what we doing ain't working right now!" and coach Jerry Sloan might be ready to listen.

Starters Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur were benched in the second half of Utah's 105-86 loss to the Celtics Wednesday after combining for only 19 points and five rebounds.

When asked if there was a chance that Paul Milsap would replace Boozer in the starting lineup, Sloan replied, "I don't know. I don't know who it will be. But I'll have to make that decision when it comes down to it."

Oddsmakers have the Jazz favored by 1-point as they visit the 76ers. The total is set at 199.

Alex the Great on the way

Alexander Ovechkin participated in full practice Thursday and even fired slap shots, proving that his injured shoulder is on the mend. Coach Bruce Boudreau wouldn't rule out the star sniper's return against Minnesota Friday but Ovechkin sounded like it could be longer.

"I'm getting closer," he said. "I still need probably couple days."

The Capitals visit New Jersey Saturday. Oddsmakers have yet to post lines for those games.

Big boost for WVU

The Mountaineers are coming off their worst offensive showing of the season and will need all of their weapons if they are going to beat No. 5 Cincinnati and keep their BCS hopes alive.

Luckily, quarterback Jarrett Brown and running back Noel Devine have recovered from their ankle injuries that forced them to miss part of last week's 17-9 win over Louisville. The injury is still bothering Devine, and coach Bill Stewart will be planning to go to Jock Sanders if Devine struggles.

"He's gotten nicked up a little bit. He'll be OK," Stewart said. "If it's meant to be, it's meant to be."

Cincinnati is favored by 9.5-points with the total set at 55.5.

Blueline Blues

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without All-star defenseman Mike Komisarek for at least three weeks after he suffered a tear of his quad muscle in a collision with Detroit's Todd Bertuzzi Saturday night.

“You don’t want an injury to somebody like Mike Komisarek,” coach Ron Wilson said.

The prize free agent acquisition was brought in to provide toughness and leadership to a team that is rebuilding around a core of young players.

Oddsmakers have Toronto listed at +178 for Friday's game at Chicago with the total set at 6.

Pike to make appearance

Zach Collaros will start for Cincinnati against West Virginia Friday, but coach Brian Kelly announced that Tony Pike will also see some snaps. Collaros was spectacular in place of Pike last Saturday throwing for 480 yards during a 47-45 win over Connecticut. Regardless of who is under center, Kelly is comfortable with his quarterback.

"The nice part about it is that our football team has absolutely no concerns over who's leading them, if it's Zach or Tony. That's a great thing to have.

The Bearcats are trying to get the injured quarterback some reps before their bye week and Pike's contribution will most likely be limited to handoffs and short passes as he heals from an injury to his non-throwing arm.

Cincinnati is favored by 9.5-points with the total set at 56.

12) The early signing period for college basketball recruiting ends next Wednesday; nine of the top 25 recruits in Class of 2010 are unsigned-- will any of them commit before Wednesday? Remember, recruiting may seem boring to some, but games are won and lost by these decisions.

11) Will Cincinnati stay unbeaten and beat dangerous West Virginia in a Friday night ESPN game?

10) Michigan/Florida State are both struggling badly; can either of them go on the road Saturday and post an upset?

9) Can Charlie Weis go on the road and upset Pitt squad that has to be looking ahead to conference games against West Virginia, Cincinnati?

8) Loser of Georgia-Auburn game is going to be in freefall, as both have lost three of last four games against I-A teams. Lot of tense coaches on those two staffs this week. Georgia isn't even bowl eligible yet.

Portland Trail Blazers at New Orleans Hornets (+1.5, 190)

The Hornets are having chemistry issues this season, which came to a head when the Phoenix Suns handed New Orleans a 124-104 beating Wednesday night.

The loss was the Hornets’ sixth of the season and dropped the franchise to second last in the Southwest, just ahead of the 1-8 Memphis Grizzlies. The defeat also dropped the axe on head coach Byron Scott, who was fired Thursday afternoon.

“We’re not getting in a flow,” forward David West told The Times-Picayune after the Phoenix loss. “Guys other than C.P. (Chris Paul), he’s the only guy on the team that gets a consistent flow of good looks on a nightly basis. We’re going to struggle when that happens. We’ve got to figure out some new ways to attack because we go against these teams that are indoctrinated into their system, and we’re going to struggle.”

West is one of the biggest culprits. The All-Star is scoring just over 15 points per game after averaging more than 20 points a night in each of the last two seasons. He scored only 10 points versus the Suns, shooting 3-for-9 from the field Wednesday.

New Orleans could find it tough to gel when it takes on the defensive-savvy Portland Trail Blazers, who have held opponents to under 90 points per game this season.

Toronto Raptors at Los Angeles Clippers (+2.5, 209)

The Toronto media was all a buzz Wednesday night following the Raptors’ 99-89 win over the Chicago Bulls as 5.5-point home favorites.

The focal point of their attention was a baseline jam from rookie DeMar DeRozan in the second half that brought the Air Canada Centre crowd to its feet.

You’ll have to excuse the beat writers’ bias excitement. It’s just been a while since they’ve seen a member of the team play above the rim, going back to Vince Carter’s heyday above the border. DeRozan finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds for his best NBA performance in eight games.

"I thought DeMar in the third quarter just really gave us a lift. He chased balls. He rebounded. He was aggressive," coach Jay Triano told the Toronto Star. "I thought he had maybe one of his best games as a pro."

The rookie should continue to help Toronto pick up wins, especially with a four-game Western road trip beginning against the Clippers Friday. It will be a homecoming for the Los Angeles native, who played his one college season at USC.

Tonight is really Opening Night in college basketball; 43 games on Vegas rotation, definitely the worst night of the year to invest in college hoops. Not even the coaches know what to expect in season openers. We'll give you some knowledge to work with, but there's not a lot to work with.

-- Purdue has its top six guys back from 27-6 team; Northridge lost top three scorers from Big West tourney champs that scared Memphis in NCAAs, brought in five JC kids to replace them.

-- UConn lost 49 ppg from LY's team, has soph PG but reloaded with lot of talented newcomers.

-- Xavier has new coach, only one senior. Youngstown finished 6th in Horizon LY, their best finish in that league. Penguins lost six games by five or less points LY.

-- Towson State has five of top six scorers back; Miami OH brought in four new guys to replace five graduated seniors from 17-13 team.

-- Cleveland State has seven guys back from 26-11 team, but they've got a new PG. St Bonaventure wants to play faster, has added lot of talent.

-- Boston College lost star G Rice, but has nucleus of seven juniors that will share ball better. Dartmouth was 9-19 LY; lost its top scorer.

-- Valparaiso has seven new players after four guys transferred out. Ball State has nine underclassmen on its 12-man roster.

-- Penn State (-3.5) won 85-73 at Penn LY; Lions won NIT last March, but don't have a senior this year. Penn had losing record LY, the first one they've had since 1991.

-- UL-Monroe has all five starters back from 10-20 team; LSU lost three starters from 27-8 team- their new guys will play right away.

-- Northwestern star Coble hurt his foot, is out for a month, bad news for Wildcat team looking for first-ever NCAA bid. Northern Illinois has four starters back from 10-20 team; they have six sophs, five juniors.

-- Loyola Chi lost four of top five scorers. Kansas State has four of its starters back from 22-12 team.

-- Kansas is #1 team in country, could be looking ahead to Memphis on Tuesday. Hofstra has only one starter taller than 6-5, but they've got fourstarters back from LY's 21-11 team.

-- Drexel (+12) upset St Joe's 64-52 LY; Hawks are opening a new arena tonight. Dragons have four starters back fron 17-15 tea, St Joe's lost two starters from LY's 17-15 team.

-- SMU has seven of top eight scorers back, has tlaented guards, but last year they were just 9-21. South Florida has six new players after a 9-22 disaster LY.

-- Idaho returns 80% of scoring, 70% of rebounding from first winning season they've had in decade- they have seven seniors. Utah has three starters back from 24-10 team, but also has eight new players.

-- Georgetown doesn't have any seniors; they shot 33.2% from arc LY. Tulane has three starters back from improved 14-17 team. Hoyas like to recruit in New Orleans, which is why they're playing here.

-- BYU has four starters back from 25-8 team; they've got good guards. Bradley has three starters back from 21-15 team.

-- Denver (+13) lost 61-56 at Northern Iowa LY; both sides have all five starters back this year. UNI is headed to Virgin Islands next week; they better not look past Denver and their Princeton offense

-- San Francisco (-3.5) got pasted 61-40 at Cal Poly LY; Dons have four starters back, brought in six new guys, will play faster. Cal Poly wound up firing its coach after last season (7-21).

-- New Mexico State has just about whole roster from explosive 17-14 team that couldn't guard its own shadow. St Mary's lost 44.9 pp from a 28-7 team; they have seven new players this season.

-- San Diego has senior guards; they were disappointing 16-16 last year, after upsetting UConn in NCAAs the year before. Stanford is picked 8th in Pac-10, losing three starters- they've got only tw scholarship seniors.

-- Wisc-Green Bay, UAB were both 22-11 LY. Blazers have only one senior this year. UWGB has three starters back, UAB two.

-- Pacific (-5) won 73-55 at Pepperdine LY, but lost top four scorers from that team. Waves have eight sophomores this year.

-- Wright State has good guards but is inferior athletically to guard-rich Washington team that was hampered in preseason by flu running thru squad. Huskies have one senior. Wright has four starters back.

-- Boise State has seven juniors, five seniors, but lost top scorer from LY. LMU doesn't have a senior; they're younger than last year's 3-28 team that caused the last coach to quit.

-- Cal-Davis lost five of last six games LY, Colorado State lost seven of last eight; both teams have three starters back. Rams are 4-28 in MWC the last two seasons. Davis is picked 4th in slipping Big West.

-- Kentucky has new coach, great new freshmen, but can they shoot it? Expectations are way high in Lexington. Morehead has four starters back from 20-16 team that won OVC tourney and NCAA play-in game.

-- Duke only has three guards, no pure PGs; they've got three starters back from 30-7 team. NC-Greensboro brought in freshman PG from PA to try and improve LY's 5-25 record. Their other four starters return.

-- Wofford has all five starters back from LY's team that was their first winning year in D-I. Pitt lost four starters from LY, is picked 8th in 16-team Big East- they only have one senior this year.

-- Seton Hall (-11) beat St Peter's 60-46 LY, but key transfer Lawrence got busted for DUI this week, is out. Peacocks won five of last seven games LY. Lot of pressure on Gonzalez to win at the Hall this year.

-- Sacramento State brought in 11 JC players the last two years, as they try to win at a school that has never won. Rice has four starters and six freshmen on team that was 10-22 LY.

-- Appalachian State lost 108-101 at NC-Wilmington LY; ASU has just about whole team back, plus Peterson is upgrade as new coach. UNCW is picked to finish last in 12-team CAA.

-- Austin Peay has to replace 1,000-point scorer, but has lot of guards to battle Tennessee's pressure. Vols lost couple of guys in preseason, but they're still loaded and will press more this season.

-- Tennessee Tech has four starters back from 12-18 team. Minnesota has all five starters back from 22-11 squad, but has had lot of issues off the court in preseason.

-- Idaho State has eight seniors; they lost four OT games LY in a 13-19 season- they need two new guys to step up. Iowa State has experienced team, but only has one senior this year.

-- Siena is picked in many top 20's; they have four starters back from a 27-8 team that scared Louisville in second round of NCAAs. Tennessee State has new coach, eight new players, but at least they're home.

-- Auburn lost three starters from 24-12 team that saved Lebo's job; the three starters who left scored 28.7 ppg. Niagara is athletic but thin and well-coached- they have four starters back from 26-9 team.

-- Mississippi State has all five starters back LY but hasn't gotten star recruit Sdiney eligible yet; they were 23-13 without him LY. Rider has four starters back from 19-13 team, but only one senior.

-- Weber State (+10) lost 75-49 at Utah State LY, after being up seven points at half; they made 13 straight 3's in an exhibition game this fall. Utah State has four starters back from LY's 30-5 team.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Chicago Blackhawks (-194, 6)

The Blackhawks are still without their big offseason acquisition Marion Hossa and they just lost their centre Bolland to a back injury. But these young Hawks still have plenty of offensive weapons to get the job done.

With a core group of talents like Toews, Kane, Sharp, Campbell and Versteeg, you can bet that water bottles will be flying come Friday night versus the slow-moving Maple Leafs.

Jonas Gustavsson may be the future net minder that Toronto has been waiting on but not even the Monster will be able to contain an offense like Chicago.

Luke Schenn, the sophomore defenseman has lost his physical edge and fellow blueliner Mike Komisarek will be sidelined for up to three weeks with a small tear in his quadriceps.

The Blackhawks are an impressive 8-2-1 at home while the Leafs have struggled on the road with a 2-3-3 record.

Expect the blue and white to see a lot of red as they get lit up in this Original Six matchup.

Los Angeles Kings at Atlanta Thrashers

Anze Kopitar and Ryan Smyth have brought back a flare that L.A. fans haven't seen since the days of Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille.

The pair has combined for a total of 55 points with Kopitar leading the NHL in both goals and assists at 19 and 14 - seven points ahead of Washington superstar Alexander Ovechkin.

Smyth, the savy veteran, seems to have finally found his stride after being bounced around with a number of teams since his days in Edmonton.

Atlanta's high-scoring forward Ilja Kovalchuk is still nursing a broken foot and practiced for the first time in three weeks Tuesday. Even if Kovalchuk is cleared to play Friday, don't expect him to be 100 percent.

"There is just a little soreness after two hard days of practice", Thrashers head coach John Anderson told reporters. "It takes a lot out of you...When you feel good walking around, sometimes you don't feel so good after you've worked out pretty hard."

This spells trouble for the Thrashers, who are 1-4 in their last five home games.
