After pushing our play last Sunday on the Bills taking four-points, I was hungering for action on the Sunday night game under the roof in St. Louis. Choosing to eschew the noise of a sports bar, I was sitting in front of the big plasma screen at Davio’s swanky bar in Park Square. Seeking quiet and a martini made with Plymouth gin, when the tuna tartar arrived about the same time as Tony D, I knew that I’d only get one out of two.
Glancing at the screen, Tony said, “This time next Sunday you can look for me on that televison.” Thinking to myself that I’d just as soon have a root canal than commit to a 10-hour pilgrimage in 30- degree temperatures to watch a football game surrounded by people in puffy blue jackets, I lied and said, “Lucky you.”
Smiling like a conquering hero, he asked, “What do you think the line will be?”
“Five and a half, maybe six-points.”
“Sounds about right,” said Tony, leaving the bar and me with an extra drink on my bill.
Picking up this gutsy tabloid on Monday and later checking in with Sports Off Shore in Antigua, Tony and I were both wrong- Local 22 opened at four in the ad nauseam bowl. On Thursday afternoon, Sports Off Shore moved the number to -3.5 while many spots still showed the game at minus four.
To my longtime gambling eye, the number’s a bit soft. In essence it’s saying that if the game were played in Dallas, the Girls would be two-point favorites. In the comparison world, these same Pokes were laying four last Sunday vs. the Bills. Quickly translating, the linesmaker only sees a two-point deferential between the Sons of Krafty Bob and the offensively inept Bills. I’m a gambler, but I think I can make a number and I made Bill’s Pats at least 5.5 over Bill’s Girls.
In the hole a negative $370 as a result of a 6-5-1 mark by the numbers, let’s hit a few games in Week 11. Because this is a game of numbers and nothing more than this, Local 22 at -3.5 (or -4) will be a $220 play. And to make Sunday a bit more exciting, the self-proclaimed “Greatest Show on Turf” should find grass, wind and all of those things associated with playing a game outside a bit more unsettling than under a cozy roof. Let’s play the Bears taking six-points for $385 and look to go 2-0 and make $550 Sunday so that Planter’s Punch and swaying palms may return to this column.
