    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics play host to the Jazz, the Suns try to knock off the Hornets, and the Blackhawks and Avs take the ice in Chicago.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Wednesday's college football matchup has Toledo at Central Michigan, with the Chippewas set as 15.5-point home favorites. Central Michigan (7-2 SU, 6-2 ATS) fell 31-10 to Boston College in their last contest, with Ryan Radcliff rushing for the team's only touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Rockets (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) were defeated 31-24 by Miami-Ohio in their most recent contest two weeks ago.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

A busy night around the NBA on Wednesday sees 13 games on the schedule, including Utah at Boston. The Jazz improved to 3-4 on the season by beating the Knicks 95-93 on the road on Monday night. Andrei Kirilenko and Carlos Boozer each scored 23 points for the Jazz in that victory, while Mehmet Okur had 12 rebounds. The 7-1 Celtics last played on Saturday against the Nets, when they rolled to an 86-75 win. Paul Pierce tossed in 16 points for Boston in that contest.

Also on the NBA's Wednesday slate: Chicago at Toronto, Golden State at Indiana, Atlanta at New York, Philadelphia at New Jersey, Charlotte at Detroit, Denver at Milwaukee, Cleveland at Orlando, Portland at Minnesota, Memphis at Houston, Dallas at San Antonio, Oklahoma City at the Clippers, and New Orleans at Phoenix. The Suns sit at 7-1 on the season after beating the Sixers 119-115 on Monday night. Steve Nash had 21 points and 20 assists in that win.

As well, college basketball offers up three games on Wednesday, with Robert Morris at Syracuse, Detroit at No. 13 California, and N.C. Central at No. 6 North Carolina. The Tar Heels won their season opener 88-72 over Florida International on Monday night, with Deon Thompson scoring 20 points in the win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the National Hockey League schedule for Wednesday, with Edmonton at Buffalo, Los Angeles at Carolina, Anaheim at New Jersey, the Islanders at Washington, Detroit at Columbus, and Colorado at Chicago. The 12-4-2 Avs fell 5-3 to the Oilers in their last game on Sunday, with Marek Svatos, T.J. Hensick, and David Jones all scoring. The Hawks are 9-5-2 after beating the Kings 4-1 on Monday night; Troy Brouwer collected three points.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Wednesday, November 11

      Stung

When the Phoenix Suns last played the New Orleans Hornets in April, they covered the spread for the first time in nine meetings between the teams. It also was the first time in six games the teams played to the under. The Hornets have won their last three visits to Phoenix, which is giving 5.5 points with a total of 215.5.

      MAC daddy

Central Michigan is coming off a 31-10 loss at Boston College. But within the MAC, the Chippewas are 5-0 straigt up and 4-1 against the spread, all as a favorite. CMU has won its last four meetings with Toledo, covering three times. The Chippewas are favored by 17 points, the biggest line in the series since 2004.

      What's your point?

Utah Jazz Deron Williams is nursing a sore lower back and bruised left calf that forced him to miss practice Tuesday. The point guard leads the Jazz in scoring (21.4) and assists (10.7). His backups are Ronnie Price and rookie Eric Maynor, who has played just 16 minutes this season. Williams' status is likely why no line has been established. The Jazz have covered five of the last six meetings.

      No luck for the Irish

Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph, who suffered a shoulder injury in a loss to Navy on Saturday, probably won't play until a potential bowl game. Mike Ragone likely will start for Rudolph. However, the Irish may get back leading rusher Armando Allen, who has missed three games with an ankle injury. Notre Dame is getting seven points at Pittsburgh, with the underdog covering the last four meetings.

      Getaway day

The Denver Nuggets are 3-2 on their road trip, which ends in Milwaukee. In its last eight road trips of two games or more, the Nuggets have failed to cover in the finale seven times. Denver is giving 3.5 points with a total of 196.5.

      Ill wind

The Carolina Hurricanes have lost 12 straight games, failing to score more than two goals in their last seven. In addition, the Hurricanes will be without injured goalie Cam Ward, meaning Michael Leighton and his 5.12 GAA will be between the pipes. Carolina is +145 vs. Los Angeles with a total of 5.5.

      Notable quotable

"I just felt like changing it. It's been a long time, and J.R. has no significance to my name. My name is Earl, so I figured, why not?"

-- Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who said Tuesday upon returning from a seven-game suspension that he wants to be known by his given name of Earl Smith III.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

USA Today ran some info on college football coaches' salaries; here is some of what we learned from it.......

-- Nick Saban makes $3.9M, which seems like a lot, but Crimson Tide draws 90,000+ for their spring game, so imagine how much money is involved in apparel sales and stuff like that? He earns his money......

-- Arkansas is paying Bobby Petrino $2,858,000-- why????

-- Cincinnati's Brian Kelly earns $1,362,500, which will double when he signs his next contract, no matter where it is.

-- Nevada's Chris Ault earns $377,505, and is vastly underpaid when you look at his won/loss record, even moreso when you see that New Mexico's Mike Locksley earns $750,650 and he's been charged with both sexual harassment, assault and he hasn't won a game yet (0-9).

-- Oregon State's Mike Riley has been a head coach in both NFL and CFL, but earns less ($950,000) than Oregon's Chip Kelly, who makes $1.5M, Kelly's previous head coaching job was at New Hampshire.

-- Virginia's Al Groh somehow makes $2,072,339; hope he's socking it away-- the way the Cavs are playing, he won't be making it long.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

        13) Browns-- Won't catch Ravens looking ahead Monday, since they've lost four of last five and need the win badly. Cleveland's organization is in total chaos, having already fired two top members of front office.

        12) Bills-- If signing Terrell Owens wasn't stupid enough, now comes word they've been thinking about bringing Michael Vick in. Keep this up and they won't be able to move franchise-- no one will want them.

        11) Raiders-- They're 3-16 vs spread in last 19 division home games.

        10) Bucs-- Started three QBs in first eight games of season, and none of the three were hurt. Rookie Freeman looks like a keeper; could mobile Johnson be trade bait to team that needs a QB?

        9) Lions-- Haven't won or covered hefty spreads in four road losses.

        8) Steelers-- Its about time people recognized Big Ben as an elite QB at same level as Manning/Brady/Brees. Maybe not the best fantasy QB, but in real life terms, who is better?

        7) Falcons-- Lot of weapons on offense; interesting test at Carolina this week, against team that outgained Atlanta in first meeting, even though Falcons came out of it with 28-20 home win.

        6) Cowboys-- Won last four games as Romo spreads ball around like a QB is supposed to; upset alert for them this week, at Lambeay against a wounded Packer squad. Dallas has 11 sacks in last three games. Rodgers has been sacked 37 times in eight games, on pace to set NFL record.

        5) Bengals-- Dominated Baltimore for 60:00 last week, now go for rare sweep of Steelers. It helps when the QB is healthy, doesn't it?

        4) Patriots-- Fact that they play Colts every year isn't conspiracy by the NFL; schedules are determined by a formula. Where you finish tells you most of your non-divisional games; rest are on a rotation basis. Just happens Pats/Colts finish in same place in standings most every year.

        3) Vikings-- Already looking forward to Viking-Saint NFC title game.

        2) Colts-- Caldwell gets first big test as head man Sunday night; four of their eight wins so far are by four or less points.

        1) Saints-- I'm guessing I'm in for a miserable three hours Sunday, as my Rams host Saints team with five defensive TDs in last five games.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Phoenix Suns (-5.5, 215.5)

We all owe Steve Nash a big apology.

Heading into the NBA season, the former two-time MVP was not even mentioned in MVP talks. There was LeBron, Kobe and Dwight – but not Nash. Kid Canada graciously accepts our apologies and continues to lead the Suns to a 7-1 (5-3 ATS) start with number like 18 points and 13 assists per game.

"I want to win a championship," Nash told NBA.com. "If I do, it'll be the best accomplishment of my career, but if I don't, my career has been really rewarding. I think I still have a lot to play for whether I win a championship or not."

He’ll take on Hornets guard Chris Paul Wednesday, who many consider to be the best point guard in the NBA. Paul is scoring almost 27 points per game but is dishing out only 9.8 assists per game – down from 11 and 11.6 in the past two seasons. New Orleans is off to a disappointing 3-5 start and has covered the spread just twice on the road this year.

Phoenix, on the other hand, returns home for only the third time after winning three straight games on the road – covering the oddsmakers’ number in all three.

            Pick: Phoenix

Charlotte Bobcats at Detroit Pistons (-3.5, 172)

Take the Pistons’ top two scorers out of the equation and you have the result of Sunday’s 88-81 win over the Philadelphia 76ers, which played well under the 191.5-point total set by books.

Detroit got production from its makeshift starting five while Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince watched from the sideline, but only 26 points off the bench. Hamilton is nursing a bum ankle that will keep him out Wednesday night while Prince is out of action for a while after injuring his back.

"You're talking about a guy you can trust and a person who has been to a championship and won it," head coach John Kuester said of Prince. "We'll miss his experience and leadership and his ability to talk to players."

Detroit already ranks among the worst offenses in the NBA and now faces a team that thrives on defense and low-scoring, grimy games. Charlotte is scoring just over 85 points a night but its defense sits third in the league. The Bobcats will be coming off a game against Orlando Tuesday.

            Pick: Under

                      Wednesday, November 11

California beat Murray State 75-70 Monday in game that wasn't nearly that close; Racers hit some 3's down stretch to make game seem closer than final score. Bears start four seniors, share ball well, aren't real tough inside- they're a favorite in Pac-10. Detroit has some transfers eligible, so they're better this year, but it should take time for new faces to adjust. Titans are picked to finish 6th in a 10-team Horizon League.

Syracuse forced 32 turnovers, held overmatched Albany to 27% from floor in easy win Monday; now young Orangemen face Robert Morris squad that was 24-11 LY, lost 77-62 to Michigan State in NCAAs and is #4 pick in NEC this year after losing two starters (MVP, top defensive player in league). RMC lost to Rutgers of Big East by 12 LY, they lost to Miami by 8. Big edge for Syracuse having already played a game.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets (-110, 5.5)

How do you get the taste of a 5-1 loss to the Maple Leafs out of your mouth?

Detroit has brushed its teeth about six times a day since laying an egg in Toronto Saturday night but it might just take a win to rid them off the aftertaste. But picking up that much needed win is easier said than done.

The Red Wings visit the Blue Jackets, who are coming off back-to-back wins. Columbus has fought hard for its current record – its last five games have been decided by one goal. The Jackets have been tough at home, going 4-1-0-2 to start the season.

Knowing they’re in for a war Wednesday, the Red Wings worked on winning the battles. Detroit focused on improving its power play which is just 1-for-18 over the last five games. That should sparked the team’s scoring, which has been limited over the last four games.

Goaltender Jimmy Howard will get the start between the pipes. He gave up five goals against the Edmonton Oilers in his most recent start and has just one victory in his last 10 appearances.

                            Pick: Over

Anaheim Ducks at New Jersey Devils (-131, 5.5)

The Ducks have got nice and comfy at the Honda Center, going 3-1 in their last four home games. That cushy ride is over with Anaheim embarking on a four-game road swing starting in New Jersey Wednesday night.

Adding to this rough patch of schedule is the goaltending controversy stirred up with the return of veteran keeper Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The former playoff MVP made it very clear to the franchise that he wants to be the No. 1 option over budding star Jonas Hiller, who is 6-5-1 with a 2.76 GAA.

"I'd rather retire than be a backup goalie," Giguere told the L.A. Daily News. "Something needs to happen. You get a guy like (Hiller) that's going to be a free agent at the end of the year and myself, making the money I'm making, either I'm leaving or he's leaving.

"I want to play; that's when I have fun. Right now, this is not fun."

Chances are, with Giguere’s laundry list of medical and personal issues, the team will side with Hiller. Needless to say, front office politics is not what the Ducks need to focus on heading into this road trip.

                            Pick: New Jersey

Pucking the trends: Hurricanes in free fall
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Carolina tropical storms

So what do oddsmakers think of the Carolina Hurricanes?

On Saturday the Columbus Blue Jackets were -204 favorites against the ‘Canes. It was the first time since 2006 the Blue Jackets were favorites of -200 or greater.

That was before Cam Ward got injured.

Carolina, already missing its two best forwards in Eric Staal and Ray Whitney, will be without the services of its Conn Smythe winning netminder for up to four weeks.

"He (Ward) stabilized us," said Hurricanes forward Erik Cole. "Everyone has confidence in him to perform."

Manny Legace has been signed by the ‘Canes to split time in net with Michael Leighton.

The Hurricanes have lost 12 straight games, including six consecutive in regulation.

                            Leafs no longer blow

The Toronto Maple Leafs are 3-0-4 in their last seven games and 6-1 against the spread after starting the season 0-7-1 and 0-8 ATS.

As Toronto Star writer Damien Cox points out, Leafs GM Brian Burke’s blueprint for victory is finally coming together.

Jonas Gustavsson has been in net for six of Toronto’s last seven games and has a respectable 2.60 GAA and .918 save percentage.

“This kid (Gustavsson), he deserves the shot to play and we’re playing well in front of him,” said Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson

Phil Kessel has three points in his first three games and demonstrated that he is a legitimate sniper.

"He's a smart player (Kessel), he's always in the right place at the right time," said Toronto forward Jason Blake.

                            Many Happy Returns?

The Vancouver Province’s Ben Kuzma observes that the Canucks were recently missing six forwards and their starting goaltender.

Vancouver should have four-time All-Star Roberto Luongo and last year’s top goal-scorer Daniel Sedin back from injury this week.

Backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft is doing an admirable job filling in for Luongo. Raycroft is 4-1-0 with a 1.70 GAA since Luongo’s injury.

The Canucks have had some trouble scoring in Sedin’s absence, averaging 2.64 goals per game since his Oct. 7 injury.

"Injuries aside, with the nine games we played in 14 nights and finished with a 6-3 record, if somebody told me before I can have that record, I would probably take it," said Canucks coach Alain Vigneault.

Best offense is a good defense

Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out that Atlanta’s last seven goals have come from defensemen and 63.2 percent of the Thrashers’ goals since Ilya Kovalchuk’s injury have come from the defensemen.

“That’s good. We just have to get our forwards scoring, and everything will be perfect,” said Atlanta defenseman Tobias Enstrom.

The over is 4-2-0 in Kovalchuk’s absence. Atlanta has a 7-3-4 over/under record this season.

Meanwhile the Nashville Predators are 5-2-0 in their last seven games and have scored 19 goals during that span. Ten of those 19 goals have come from defensemen.

"I think any time the defensemen on any team can score it helps out big time,'' said Predators defenseman Cody Franson.

                            On schedule

Wednesday Nov. 11, Edmonton at Buffalo

The Edmonton Oilers will be playing their third road game in four nights. The Oilers will be hard-pressed to play a 60-minute game against a well-rested Buffalo Sabres team that will not have played since losing to the Bruins on Nov. 7.

Saturday Nov. 14, Anaheim at Detroit

After playing nine of 10 at home, the Anaheim Ducks embark on a cross-country road trip where they must play four games in six nights. Saturday night against the Red Wings will be Anaheim’s third game in four nights. Detroit has not yet suffered a regulation loss at Joe Louis Arena this season (5-0-1).

Saturday Nov. 14, Los Angeles at Tampa Bay

On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Kings will be playing their third road game in four nights and fourth road game in six. Tampa Bay will be playing just its second game of the week and has played its best hockey at home (4-0-3).

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for November 11, 2009 from Len Berman.

                              1. Quick Hits

After all the botched umpire calls, baseball general managers don't bother to discuss expanding the use of instant replay at their annual meeting. I would have used replay to determine fair or foul down the lines.
Don't you love the experts who proclaimed that Derek Jeter was among the worst shortstops? Overrated, limited range. Yesterday he won the Gold Glove for fielding.
Using the slower low-tech bathing suit, Michael Phelps fails to qualify for 2 of the 3 finals at a Stockholm swim meet.

                              2. Crime and Punishment

Former top ranked tennis player Marat Safin says Andre Agassi should give back the trophies and money he won by winning Grand Slam tournaments after failing a drug test and lying about it. The tennis people let Andre Agassi slide when he said, oops I didn't mean to do it. Then again these same people bought Richard Gasquet's story that he flunked a drug test because he kissed a girl who had been using cocaine. And we know all about Serena Williams' slap on the wrist for her behavior at the U.S. Open. If I ever break the rules, I want tennis people as my judge and jury!

                              3. Role Models

On this Veterans Day, Top 5 subscriber Bill V. an Air Force veteran, offers this poignant thought: "The Yankees championship parade up the Canyon of Heroes on lower Broadway attracted thousands. It's a shame that if the real heroes marched up that same canyon today very few would come.

                              4. The Miracle on Ice

When I asked yesterday about which moment I might have ranked #1 in my new kids book The Greatest Moments in Sports, many of you correctly guessed The Miracle on Ice. (Sorry no prizes.) I loved subscriber Phil G.'s story.
"On that night in 1980 I was at MSG. Sha Na Na opened for Jay and the Americans. The scoreboard kept giving updates and when they posted the final score the place went nuts. Jay came out, did his opening song, then said 'We haven't done this next song in years, but we just decided to add it today because WE BEAT THOSE F***ING RUSSIANS!' They then launched into a spirited version of "Only in America" and you can imagine the reaction."
I guess Jay Black summed up so "eloquently" what most Americans were thinking.

                              5. Code of Conduct

A New Mexico women's soccer player has been banned after punching, kicking, and pulling the hair of a BYU player on the field. A girls high school game in Rhode Island also degenerated into hair pulling and brawling. That was tame compared with Australia. At a soccer game there, police were called to quell a disturbance among the fans. Nothing new in soccer. But some of the fans were wielding spears and axes. What started it all? When one of the players was awarded a free kick. They have a cheer in Australia that goes "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy."
They've got the oy part right.

Happy Birthday: Former Masters and U.S. Open champion Fuzzy Zoeller. 58.
Bonus Birthday: Actor Leonardo DiCaprio. 35.

Today in Sports: Now we're having fun. The New York Knicks played their first game at the old Madison Square Garden. (Yes they lost.) 1946.
Bonus Event: On this date, the 11th hour, the 11th month, the 11th day World War I effectively ended. 1918.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th to be Armistice Day. In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill honoring all veterans.
