    BY THE NUMBERS
    WEEK 10 WRAP
    Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003

You know it has to be true when new millennium's official all-things sports imprimatur, ESPN, dubs it "Upset Sunday." That's right, it took ten weeks of play, but the National Football Lottery finally had the right to dig up the wonderful bromide, "On any given Sunday."

The Redskins beat Seattle. In the swamps of Jersey, the Falcons crushed the Giants as 11-point underdogs. Out west, the heretofore pitiful Chargers put up 42-points on the Vikings behind Doug Flutie, who was rumored to have met Dr. Faustus at a San Diego taco stand on Friday. In windy and rainy Jacksonville, the Jaguars gained their first home win of the year as 6-point underdogs over the high-flying Colts while Carolina cashed in its Tampa Bay exacta by defeating the Bucs for the second time in 2003.

For those who look at such things, there were five home 'dogs playing Sunday. The four mentioned above won outright while the fifth, the Raiders, somehow spit up a double digit lead, and eventually lost27-24 in overtime to put the game right on th number as the Jets were favored by three-points.

And speaking of right on the number, our big play, hell, our only play, was the Bills grabbing four in Dallas. Let's go to Bills head coach, Gregg Williams, for his succinct wrap on his un-Mad Max-like road club's 10-6 loss.

"When you don't score touchdowns in this league, it's pretty hard to win," said Williams in his post game interview. "We've got to get answers, we've got to get touchdowns."

On a Sunday when four home 'dogs win outright, we played what I saw on Friday as a better visiting 'dog. Unfortunately, the Bills simply couldn't take advantage of what was a very ripe situation and one that would have truly cemented the day as Upset Sunday for the quivering troops and their leader.

After ten weeks of playing by the numbers, the bankroll remains at a negative $370 resulting from a 6-5-1 mark by the numbers.
