    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, November 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Wizards travel to Miami to meet the Heat, the Mavericks host the Rockets, and the Penguins get ready for the Bruins.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Week 11 of the college football season gets underway on Tuesday night with a Mid-American matchup between Ohio and Buffalo in western New York. The Bobcats (6-3 SU, 4-4 ATS) are coming off a 20-17 road win over Ball State in their last contest, with Theo Scott going 17-of-27 for 161 yards passing on the day. The Bulls (3-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) fell 30-29 to Bowling Green in their last contest. Zach Maynard completed 13-of-27 pass attempts for 149 yards in that matchup.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has six games on the schedule for Tuesday, including Washington at Miami. The Wizards dropped to 2-5 on the season on Sunday, falling 102-90 at home to the Suns. Gilbert Arenas had 20 points in that defeat for Washington, while Brendan Haywood picked up 10 points and 10 boards. The Heat sit at 5-1 on the year after getting past Denver 96-88 at home on Friday night. Dwyane Wade had a team-high 22 points in that win, and Jermaine O'Neal had 18 points.

Rounding out the action on the hardwood for Tuesday: Orlando at Charlotte, Denver at Chicago, Portland at Memphis, Oklahoma City at Sacramento, and Houston at Dallas. The Rockets are 4-2 on the season after getting past the Thunder 105-94 at home on Friday night. Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry each had 24 points in that win. The Mavs, also 4-2, knocked off the Raptors 129-101 at home Saturday. Dirk Nowitzki poured in 29 points and had nine boards that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a half-dozen games on Tuesday, including Pittsburgh at Boston. The 12-5-0 Penguins were blanked 5-0 in San Jose in their last game on Saturday night, with goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury giving up three goals on 14 shots before getting yanked. The 7-7-2 Bruins doubled up Buffalo 4-2 at home last time out, with Tuukka Rask making 28 saves in the victory. Mark Recchi, Zdeno Chara, Byron Bitz, and Marco Sturm had the Boston markers on Saturday.

Also on the ice on Tuesday: Calgary at Montreal, Edmonton at Ottawa, Vancouver at St. Louis, Nashville at San Jose, and Minnesota at Toronto. The 6-10-0 Wild held on for a 3-2 win over the Stars on Saturday, with Cal Clutterbuck, Mikko Koivu, and Marek Zidlicky all scoring. The 3-7-5 Leafs won their second straight game last time out, blasting Detroit 5-1. Phil Kessel picked up his first marker as a Maple Leaf in that contest, while Jonas Gustavsson made 35 saves.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, November 10

      Banged-up backcourt

Orlando Magic starting guards Jameer Nelson and Vince Carter both are nursing injuries. Nelson has a sore left knee suffered in Sunday's loss at Oklahoma City and Carter has a sprained left ankle that forced him to miss Sunday's game, although he did participate in the shootaround. The Magic visit the Charlotte Bobcats, with no line established yet.

      Manuel labor

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder is out for the season with a separated shoulder. Ponder was among the national leaders in total offense and made the defensively porous Seminoles a solid 7-2 against the over. He will be replaced by redshirt freshman E.J. Manuel, who has thrown for two yards this season. FSU is getting six points at Wake Forest on Saturday.

      No magic potion

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas skipped Monday's practice with a sore calf. The Wizards already are without forwards Antawn Jamison and Mike Miller and guards Mike James and Javaris Crittenton. Should Arenas sit out Tuesday at Miami, that would leave Randy Foye as the only point guard. Washington is getting 6.5 points with a total of 186.5.

      Clean bill of health

Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards is expected to be cleared to play Sunday after suffering a concussion Oct. 18 and missing two full games. Ryan Fitzpatrick went 1-1 in his absence. The Bills are getting 6.5 points at Tennessee with a total of 40.

      Flame out

Calgary Flames left wing Curtis Glencross will start serving a three-game suspension Tuesday at Montreal. Glecross has two goals and six assists while averaging 15 minutes per game. The Flames are 4-1-1 on the road and are -115 with a total of 5.5.

      Something Bruin

UCLA freshman quarterback Kevin Prince was cleared to practice Monday, two days after suffering a concussion. Prince was knocked out of Saturday's 24-23 win over Washington by a helmet-to-helmet hit, but coach Rick Neuheisel expects him to start at Washington State on Saturday. The Bruins are 4-5, but Prince has finished just two of the wins. UCLA is giving 18 points to WSU.

      Totally trendy

The Denver Nuggets and Chicago Bulls have played to the over in their last seven meetings. The total never has been less than 201.5, and the teams have scored less than 99 points just once. The Nuggets also will be getting back scoring guard J.R. Smith, whose suspension is over. The total is 204, with the Nuggets favored by 1.5 points.

      Notable quotable

"When a name like that comes on the free agent market like today, we'll obviously go back and take a look at him just like any other player. Obviously, he's been a good player in this league and I'm sure he'll get a lot of interest from a lot of people."

-- Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, when asked about the availability of running back Larry Johnson, who was waived by the Kansas City Chiefs.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- North Carolina beat Isiah Thomas' Florida International Panthers in the first game of the college basketball season, 82-65.

-- Why isn't Ben Roethlisberger mentioned as one of the game's best quarterbacks? To me, he is at same level as Manning or Brady.

-- Over last 6.5 years, Colts/Patriots are both 83-21, best in NFL.

-- On heels of missing three FGs in a 10-3 loss at Nebraska Saturday, Oklahoma Sooners will likely change kickers this week.

-- One of the candidates to replace Michigan AD Bill Martin is David Brandon, CEO of Domino's Pizza, who played for the Wolverines.

        -- Georgia Tech's rushing yardage last 5 games: 401-309-362-404-412.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) First the Bills signed Terrell Owens; now they're rumored to be one of the teams thinking about Michael Vick for next year. What exactly is going on in Buffalo? Why would you want either one of those guys?

        12) NFC East teams have played 23 non-conference games this season, and were favored in 19 of them.

        11) Tommie Harris of the Bears got tossed 1:29 into Sunday's game with the Cardinals after punching one of the Cardinals' lineman, part of reason Arizona lit Chicago up for 41 points.

        10) 65-year old Texas billionaire Gerald Ford (no relation to President Ford) is one of the candidates to buy the Rams. The football stadium at SMU is named after Ford, so he's used to paying football players.

        9) You forget about this the way 2009 is going, but Tampa Bay finished ahead of the Saints the last two years. Not this year.

        8) New Orleans has five defensive touchdowns in its last five games.

        7) Got to think Tony Romo is having lot more fun this year, spreading ball around to all his receivers, instead of placating one loud one.

        6) In their last five games, Baltimore scored 7-7-3-6-0 points in the first half; they have no first half touchdowns in their last three games.

        5) Bears-49ers kick off NFL Network's Thursday night schedule for lot of the country this week; sadly, my cable system isn't smart enough to get NFL Network, so its either go out or follow on the computer.

        4) Memphis fired football coach Tommy West Monday; they should be firing the athletic director who didn't get the Tigers into the Big East.

        3) Bill Murray's son Luke is a graduate assistant hoop coach at Arizona; there is no mention on Arizona's website of Luke's very famous father.

        2) Colts are 8-0, with four wins by four or less points; in the four close games, Colt opponents are 33-58 on third down; in the four games that weren't close, Colt opponents were 19-56. You have to move the chains against Indy and keep the ball out of Manning's hands and make him drive a long field when he does get the ball. .

        1) Titans turned ball over 16 times in their 0-6 start with Collins at QB, with a -10 turnover ratio; they haven't turned it over at all in two starts by Young at QB, with a +6 turnover ratio. Go figure.

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Charlotte Bobcats (NA)

The Magic pulled a disappearing act Sunday night in Oklahoma City when the Thunder beat the defending Eastern Conference champs 102-74.

Orlando players said the right things to the press following the game about how it was “embarrassing” and they shouldn’t be quitting like that in a regular season game.

But reporters say Dwight Howard was singing in the shower after the disappointing loss.

“It doesn’t seem to bother anybody in the locker room,” coach Stan Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel.

There are no excuses to lose that badly, but Orlando is shorthanded these days. Matt Barnes didn’t play because of flu-like symptoms leaving the team with just nine healthy bodies on Sunday.

Vince Carter is expected to return to the lineup on Tuesday, but the club is still missing Ryan Anderson (ankle), Rashard Lewis (suspension) and Mickael Pietrus (flu).

Orlando plays Cleveland on Wednesday, so the group could overlook the Bobcats a bit.

              Pick: Under

Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls (+1.5, 204)

The Nuggets started out 5-0 with covers in four of those games. But George Karl’s boys are 0-2 in their last two games, losing by a combined 36 points along the way.

Denver welcomes sixth man extraordinaire J.R. Smith back tonight. The talented two-guard will make his first appearance this season after serving a seven-game suspension.

“He’s getting the repetitions he’s needed,” Karl told the Denver Post. “It’s not as easy as people think. J.R. is going to have some rust.”

Karl would probably prefer to add another big to his rotation, especially with power forward Kenyon Martin nursing a sore left leg.

Smith joins a crowded backcourt that includes Ty Lawson, Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter, Arron Afflalo and Joey Graham.

Chicago’s Luol Deng should matchup well against Carmelo Anthony. He has the strength and athleticism to keep up with Melo.

The Bulls have kept games close all season. Expect that to continue Tuesday against the Nuggets.

              Pick: Bulls

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-130, 5.5)

The Pittsburgh Penguins can’t seem to catch a break. After starting the season with an 8-1-0 record, the defending Stanley Cup champions are on a 4-4-0 slide since losing defenseman Sergei Gonchar on Oct. 20.

The Pens could be without five players who totaled 43 percent of their playoff goals last year for Tuesday’s contest against the Bruins. The most recent setback occurred during Saturday’s 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks when defenseman Kris Letang suffered an undisclosed injury.

Pittsburgh was outshot 96-77 during its three-game trip through California and committed 33 giveaways.

“Injuries or not, we’ve got to compete, and we’re not doing that – we’ve been outworked,” center Michael Rupp told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Make no mistake, those guys are great hockey players and important parts of this team – but we’ve still got a pretty good group of guys.”

Boston isn’t doing so well either. The B’s are 1-3 over their last four games and they’ve played below the total in each of their last six games.

                    Pick: Under

Edmonton Oilers at Ottawa Senators (NA)

The Ottawa Senators are also going through frustrating times. They’ve dropped five of their last seven games and find themselves out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference standings.

Ottawa has to be worried about the way its offseason acquisitions are performing. Johnathan Cheechoo has only two assists while Alex Kovalev has racked up just six points.

But the Senators’ biggest problem is the discrepancy between the amount of power plays they are getting (51) and the number of penalties they are taking (67). Two of their three penalties against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday took place in the offensive zone.

“We’ve got to find a way to stay out of the box, that’s all. Period,” head coach Cory Clouston told the Ottawa Sun. “Whatever it may be. Whether we feel we’re getting the short end of the stick… we’ve got to find a way to stay out of the box.”

The Edmonton Oilers scored four power-play goals Sunday night on their way to a 5-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Expect their man advantage to have a similar performance tonight against the Senators.

                    Pick: Oilers

Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls [8:00 PM ET]

Nuggets (-1.5, O/U 204): After starting the year 5-0 SU, the Nuggets have lost their last two games. The Nuggets are led by F Carmelo Anthony, who is 2nd in the NBA in scoring at over 31 PPG. Anthony has also become a team leader this year. PG Chauncey Billups is averaging just under 20 PPG. G JR Smith is expected to play after serving his suspension, which will only help an offense that has scored more than 110 points in 4 of their 7 games this season.

Nuggets are 9-3 ATS last 12 road games.
Over is 16-6 last 22 vs. NBA Central.

Bulls: The Bulls are 4-2 SU to start the season, against a rough schedule. The Bulls have already played 4 teams that were playoff teams last year. Bulls have won all 3 of their home games, but are 1-2 ATS in those games. The Bulls are winning this year with defense. Take away the Boston game, and they are allowing 15 PPG less than they gave up last year. Offensively, the Bulls are balanced, as they have 4 starters that AVG double digits. F Luol Deng leads the way with nearly 17 PPG. The Bulls are looking to start 4-0 SU at home since 1997.
