      Daily Sports Roundup

      Sunday, November 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Eagles play host to the Cowboys, the Lakers take on the Hornets, and the Sprint Cup Series competes down in Texas.

      Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Bengals will try to assert themselves against a divisional foe in early NFL action on Sunday when they host the Ravens. Cincinnati (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) pounded the Bears 45-10 in their last contest, with Carson Palmer throwing for 233 yards and five touchdowns. Baltimore (4-3 SU, 5-2 ATS) is coming off a 30-7 win over the Broncos, with Ray Rice rushing for 84 yards and a TD. The Ravens are listed as 3-point road favorites for Sunday, with the total for the game at 44.5.

Other early NFL action: Washington at Atlanta (-9), Arizona at Chicago (-3), Houston at Indianapolis (-9), Kansas City at Jacksonville (-7), Miami at New England (-10.5), and Green Bay (-9.5) at Tampa Bay. The late afternoon games are then Carolina at New Orleans (-13), Detroit at Seattle (-10), San Diego at the Giants (-4.5), and Tennessee at San Francisco (-4). Finally, Philadelphia hosts Dallas in this week's Sunday night matchup, with the Eagles 3-point home faves.

There's one college football game on the schedule for Sunday night, with Nevada at San Jose State; the Wolf Pack are 13.5-point road favorites for that matchup. As well, the Canadian Football League closes out its regular season on Sunday with Hamilton at Winnipeg. Oddsmakers have the Bombers as 2-point favorites.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up six games on Sunday, with Philadelphia at Detroit, Phoenix at Washington, Orlando at Oklahoma City, Minnesota at Portland, Golden State at Sacramento, and New Orleans at the Lakers. The Hornets fell to 2-4 on the season with a 107-90 loss to the Raptors on Friday night; Chris Paul had 21 points and 18 assists in that contest. Los Angeles is 5-1 after beating Memphis 114-98 on Friday night; Kobe Bryant poured in a game-high 41 points in that win.

      Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are just two games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Sunday, with St. Louis at Atlanta and Edmonton at Colorado. The Oilers were doubled up 4-2 by the Rangers in their last game on Thursday night; Lubomir Visnovsky and Mike Comrie had the Oilers' goals, and Nikolai Khabibulin made 35 saves. The Avalanche are coming off a 4-3 shootout win over the Blackhawks on Friday night. Ryan O'Reilly scored twice in that win, and David Jones had the other goal.

      Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will be at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday for the season's third-last race, the Dickies 500. Points leader Jimmie Johnson is pegged as the 13/4 Vegas favorite to visit victory lane on Sunday, while pole sitter Jeff Gordon is just behind him on that list at 6/1 odds. Tony Stewart (8/1), Mark Martin (9/1), and Juan Montoya (10/1) round out the Top 5 on that Vegas chart. Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards are both pegged at 12/1 to win.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

        Sunday, November 8

        Moats can float

It took Steve Slaton just one carry last week to both figuratively and literally fumble away his starting job to Ryan Moats. The former Louisiana Tech star was officially named the team’s starter against the Colts on late Saturday night, as he finished with 23 carries for 126 yards with three touchdowns in the team’s win over Buffalo last week. The Texans are listed at +9 with a total of 49.5.

        Rushing to disaster

The Saints announced backup defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy would be lost for the season on Saturday night. And why’s that so bad? The team already will miss starting defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis and linebacker Scott Fujita against the Panthers. The Falcons gashed the Saints defense last week. New Orleans needs to rush to find answers. Fast. The Saints are listed at -13 with an over/under of 51.5.

        Defensive returns

Don’t expect to see lots of fast breaks when the Timberwolves and Trail Blazers get together. The squads have combined to see eight of their 10 games go under the total this season. Overall, four straight meetings between the squads and five of seven have gone under the number. The Blazers are listed at -15 with an over/under of 185.5.

        Pistons misfiring

The Detroit Pistons are suddenly looking very thin. The team learned on Saturday it would be without Tayshaun Prince for an extended period of time due to a ruptured disk, and the Pistons still don’t even know the status of Richard Hamilton, who has missed the past three games with an ankle injury. Over the past five games, Detroit is shooting a mediocre 44.3 percent from the floor and averaging just 91.8 points per game. The Pistons, who host the Sixers on Sunday afternoon, are listed at +2 with an over/under of 213.5.

        Take three

Kyle Busch is going for a NASCAR first this weekend – wins in the Craftsman, Nationwide and Sprint Cup circuits in the same weekend. For his career, he is 0-for-9 in Fort Worth, Texas, and finished 18th at the track in April. Busch, who posted wins in the first two series on Friday and Saturday, will start fifth Sunday and is listed at +1500 to win the checkered flag.

        Back in the swing

If it’s a big golf tournament, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson must be in the final pairing. And that’s exactly what we have at the HSBC Championships in China, where the duo finds themselves atop the leader board heading into the final round. The course plays well for both players, with its short fairways and soft greens, enabling them both to see their scores balloon. Mickelson leads the tournament at 14-under par, while Woods is second at minus-12.

        QUOTE OF THE DAY

“We all play by the rules. If you’re flagged, you deal with it, and find a way to not let it happen again."
        – Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on if he gets preferential treatment from officials.

          Six-pack for Sunday

-- How pathetic are the Knicks? They were down 66-35 at halftime in Milwaukee Saturday; they're 1-6 and look like they've quit already.

-- The Nets are 0-7; looks like a long season in the NY/NJ area.

-- Rookie Tyreke Evans scored 32 at Sacramento upset the Jazz out in Salt Lake City. That's a good win for Paul Westphal's team.

-- Allen Iverson has taken an indefinite personal leave from Grizzlies; there are rumors he won't come back and his Memphis career will end after three forgettable games.

-- Over in Shanghai, Phil Mickelson birdied three of last six holes to win the World Golf tournament. Ernie Els shot 63, but bogeyed 18 as he dunked his approach shot into a lake-- that was the difference.

-- Happy 80th birthday to Bobby Bowden; just don't look at the film from last night, and it'll be a better day.

          ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday....

          13) Houston scored nine points in last 0:21, booting a 51-yard FG on last play of the game, as they pulled out a dramatic 46-45 win at Tulsa, the fourth straight loss for the Golden Hurricane.

          12) Cougars should be on TV every week; they gave up 88 points in the last two games, and won both of them. They play outdoor Arenaball.

          11) Purdue beat Michigan 38-36, their first win in Ann Arbor since '66; have to find out if they're going to be first team in recent history to beat both Ohio State/Michigan in same year but not go to a bowl game. For Michigan, they've now lost their last five games vs I-A teams.

          10) Add in Navy's 23-21 win at Notre Dame, and it looks like the coach at Cincinnati, Brian Kelly, could have his choice of the Michigan job or the Notre Dame job this winter. Kelly's Bearcats are still unbeaten-- his Cincinnati squad gained 711 yards on 73 plays against UConn.

          9) Stanford helped Boise State out by upsetting Oregon 51-42; look for Jim Harbaugh's name to be linked to his alma mater's coaching job if Rich Rodriguez gets the boot after another season of struggles at Michigan.

          8) A dream season can end in one play; Iowa led Northwestern 10-0 in second quarter when QB Stanzi was hit trying to pass out of his own end zone; he severely sprained his ankle, is out for a couple weeks, and also fumbled, with Wildcats recovering for a TD that sparked them to a 17-10 win in Iowa City. Wounded Hawkeyes head to Ohio State next.

          7) 4-6 Wake Forest has five losses this season by three or less points.

          6) Score that made me go "Huh?": Baylor 40, Missouri 32. Young QB Florence was 32-43/427 passing for the Bears, who won their first game since star QB Griffin was lost for the year with a knee injury.

          5) Tough times for UConn; in addition to the death of Jasper Howard, they've lost their last three games by a total of ten points.

          4) Nebraska had seven first downs, passed for 39 yards, was 1-14 on third down, was outgained 325-180 but upset Oklahoma 10-3 thanks to five interceptions. Huskers scored 17 points in their last two games.

          3) USC is struggling, having played four road games in five weeks; Matt Barkley completed just 7-22 passes in Trojans' 14-9 win at Arizona St. First USC touchdown was scored by the defense.

          2) Alabama outgained LSU 452-253, beat Tigers 24-15; they're the best team in the country right now, no doubt in my mind.

          1) Since 2003, Navy has 12 more wins than Notre Dame. Maybe NBC should be televising all of the Middies' home games instead.

                Week 19 CFL games

                Sunday, November 8

Hamilton (9-8) @ Winnipeg (7-10)-- These two will meet again in first round of playoffs next week, so they figure to hold back on some stuff in this game. Teams split pair of games earlier in year, both in Hamilton (25-13H, +1.5/38-28W, +6). TiCats are 7-1 vs spread on road this year, with last three road losses by total of five points. Bombers won four of last six games. Six of last eight Hamilton games stayed under the total.

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-1.5, 50)

The last time these two teams faced each other the Bombers pounded the Tiger Cats on Thanksgiving. But things have changed since that day. The Tiger Cats are coming to Winnipeg with renewed confidence after a surprising 24-6 win against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. It’s quite the opposite for Winnipeg, which after inflicting a huge loss to the Alouettes, got whipped in return in Montreal last Sunday. Blue Bombers quarterback Michael Bishop demonstrated that as much is he capable of great performances, he is also capable of the worst.

His opponent, QB Kevin Glenn, has been gifted with the luxury of an offensive line that didn’t allow a single sack over the last three weeks, giving him the time to tally 233 passing yards against the Riders. The same offensive line creates openings for the running game and DeAndra’ Cobb makes the most of the opportunities, averaging almost six yards per carry. It should be interesting to see how the front seven of the Bombers will get to a Kevin Glenn, who will be motivated against the team that got rid of him. Also consider the Tiger Cats players will be fully aware that a victory in this game would lead to an East Division semifinal in Hamilton, something their city has not seen in 10 years.

                    Pick: Hamilton +1.5

                    (Last Week 2-2, season 39-28-1)

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Oilers at Colorado Avalanche (-172, 5.5)

The Colorado Avalanche have been burying teams at home this season. The surprising league leader in points is a perfect 6-0 at home this season, outscoring other teams by a staggering margin of 24-11 with wins over the Red Wings, Sharks and Blackhawks.

The key for the Avalanche has been the steady play of goalie Craig Anderson, who leads the league with 11 wins and has a 2.15 GAA average and .931 save percentage. In the only meeting this season between the teams, Colorado skated away with a 3-0 win in Edmonton.

The Oilers called up minor leaguers Liam Reddox and Ryan Potulny due to an overwhelming number of injuries. The team cut both players during training camp. Neither will make a difference against Anderson or the Avalanche.

                        Pick: Colorado -172

St. Louis Blues at Atlanta Thrashers (-130, 6)

St. Louis has been singing the the blues as of late. It has struggled to generate any kind of scoring, losing three straight, two via shutout. In their past five loses overall, the team has combined to score just three times.

Overall, the team has scored a meager 30 goals this year, the second lowest total in the league. And the Thrashers should be able to keep them on the ropes.

Atlanta has given up only 37 goals this year, the fourth-lowest total in the league. In a matchup between the teams earlier this season, the Thrashers handled the Blues to cruise to a 4-2 win. In the team’s past eight meetings overall, the under is 5-2-1.
                        Pick: Under 6

Golden State Warriors at Sacramento Kings (+5.5, 217.5)

The word “defense” should have very little to do with this matchup. But don’t be surprised to see this game fall well short of the total.

Both teams have seen more games go under the number rather than over, posting a combined over/under record of 4-5. In fact, in the teams' past 28 meetings, 19 have gone under the number.

The Warriors have a banged-up frontcourt, with Ronny Turiaf and Andris Biedrins, and have been forced to settle for even more jumpers than normal. The injuries also effect the team’s ability to rebound and get easy baskets in transition.

Meantime, the Kings still are learning to play without injured star Kevin Martin. The team must find a way to replace his scoring and minutes, and don’t expect them to find the answer anytime soon on a team destined for another date with the Draft Lottery.

                              Pick: Under 217.5

Phoenix Suns at Washington Wizards (+2, 215)

The Suns may be the road team, but they are favored against the struggling Wizards. Washington snoozed through a 102-86 loss at Indiana in its most recent game, getting a terrible game from star guard Gilbert Arenas.

The oft-injured combo guard scored only two points in the second half, took just four shots after intermission and finished with a meager four assists. He was so bad, the injured Antwan Jamison laid into the entire team following the game, throwing a fruit tray across the locker room and sparing no one in his wake.

But his tirade won’t make injured guard Mike Miller return from a shoulder injury sooner and it won’t make the team defend better against the Suns, who are coming off a convincing win in Boston Friday night.

The Suns are a solid 3-1 so far on the road and don’t over look one of the most important trends in this series. The road team is 7-1 ATS in the team’s past eight meetings.

                              Pick: Phoenix -2
