      Daily Sports Roundup

      Saturday, November 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins swim with the Sharks, the Mavs take on the Raptors, and Alabama and LSU clash in a huge SEC matchup.

      Colliding on the gridiron . . .

No. 3 Alabama hosts No. 9 LSU in the top ranked matchup on the college football schedule for Saturday. The Crimson Tide (8-0 SU, 5-3 ATS) will try to keep their unbeaten record intact against their conference rival; Alabama squeaked out a 12-10 win over Tennessee last time out. The Tigers (7-1 SU, 4-3-1 ATS) will be looking to catch Alabama in the standings; they beat Tulane 42-0 last week. Oddsmakers have the Tide as 7.5-point favorites, with the total at 40.

The other battle between ranked teams on Saturday has No. 15 Ohio State at No. 11 Penn State. The Buckeyes (7-2 SU, 7-2 ATS) had no trouble with New Mexico State last time out, rolling to a 45-0 win. The Nittany Lions (8-1 SU, 4-4 ATS) got past Northwestern 34-13 in their most recent contest, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to secure that victory. Penn State is pegged as the 5-point favorite in this Big Ten clash, with the oddsmakers putting the total at 39 points.

Elsewhere in the Associated Press Top 10 it'll be Vanderbilt at No. 1 Florida (-35), Central Florida at No. 2 Texas (-34.5), Connecticut at No. 4 Cincinnati (-17), No. 6 TCU (-24.5) at San Diego State, No. 7 Oregon (-7) at Stanford, Northwestern at No. 8 Iowa (-16), and Wake Forest at No. 10 Georgia Tech (-16).

As well, there are two CFL games on the schedule for Saturday, with Montreal a 9.5-point road fave in Toronto, and Calgary a 2-point road 'dog in Saskatchewan.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Saturday, with Denver at Atlanta, Boston at New Jersey, Charlotte at Chicago, New York at Milwaukee, Sacramento at Utah, Memphis at the Clippers, and Toronto at Dallas. The Mavericks will be looking to bounce back from a 114-107 overtime loss in New Orleans in their last contest, which dropped them to 3-2 on the season. Jason Terry poured in 35 points off the bench for Dallas in that loss, and Erick Dampier had 16 points and 14 boards.

      Taking a trip around the rink . . .

All but four teams are in action around the NHL on Saturday, with Pittsburgh at San Jose in the marquee matchup. The Sharks fell in a shootout 2-1 to Detroit on Thursday night, with forward Logan Couture picking up his first NHL goal in the loss. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 35 of the 36 Red Wings shots on Thursday night.

Also on the ice on Saturday: Nashville at Los Angeles, Buffalo at Boston, Carolina at Columbus, Florida at Washington, Detroit at Toronto, St. Louis at Philadelphia, New Jersey at Ottawa, Tampa Bay at Montreal, Dallas at Minnesota, Phoenix at Anaheim, the Rangers at Calgary, and Atlanta at the Islanders. Star forward Ilya Kovalchuk remains out of the lineup for the Thrashers; Kovalchuk won't be ready to return from his broken foot for a month.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

        Saturday, November 7

        Pennsylvania breeze

Both Penn State and Pitt must battle not only Ohio State and Syracuse Saturday afternoon, but also gusty winds. In State College, the Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes must battle 20 mph bursts, while Pitt and Syracuse will suffer through 19 mph gusts. Penn State, which touts the country's seventh-rated passer in Darryll Clark, is favored by 5.5-points with an over/under of 38.5. Pitt, which is led by stud running back Dion Lewis (12 TDs) and emergent quarterback Bill Stull (16 TDs) is listed at -21 with an over/under of 49.

        What about Bob?

The Colts waited more than a third of the season to get back banged up safety Bob Sanders back on the field, but his season was cut short again when he tore a bicep in the team’s win over the 49ers. The Colts have gotten used to playing without him, but his absence takes away a dynamic aspect of the team’s ninth-ranked defense, and his absence should be felt against the Texans. The Colts are listed at -9 with a total of 48.5.

        Don’t fight the Law

Veteran cornerback Ty Law made an unexpected return to the NFL Friday, when he signed a deal with the Denver Broncos. The 35 year old is past his prime, but still was locking down NFL stars last season for the Jets, and is expected to see plenty of action against the Steelers Monday night. The Broncos now tout Ty Law, Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins in their secondary. Denver is listed at +3 with an over/under of 39.5.

        Nothing but Nets

New Jersey isn’t just bad – it’s terrible. The Nets are a horrendous 0-5 SU and 0-5 ATS the spread to start the season, struggling to replace the contributions of guard Devin Harris, who has missed the past few games with a groin strain. And it gets worse. The Celtics are coming to town on Saturday night, and are 7-2 ATS in the team’s past nine meetings. The Nets are listed at +18 with an over/under of 184 points.

        My kind of music

The Jazz are still trying to find their identity this season, but on the way, are scoring plenty of points. Utah has a 4-1 over/under record this season, with its games averaging a total of 206 points per night. The Kings, who come to town Saturday night, have found themselves in plenty of shootouts this year and seven of the team’s past nine meetings have gone over the total. Utah is listed at -16 with an over/under of 209.

        Maple syrup

The Maple Leafs are due for a home win. The team is 0-4-2 in its own rink and has taken the past two and three of the past four meetings with Detroit. Meantime, the Red Wings are 3-11 ATS this season and are a miserable 2-8 in their past 10 road games. The Maple Leafs are listed at +150 with an over/under of six goals.

        Howling mad

The Coyotes are four games over .500 and the Ducks are two games under, but why is Anaheim favored? The Ducks have dominated the story historically, but the hounds from the desert took the team’s only meeting this season 3-2, has won four of six and is backstopped by the white hot Ilya Bryzgalov (1.81 GAA). Anaheim has won just twice in its past two games overall. The Coyotes are listed at +140 with an over/under of 5.5 goals.

              Write-up

              Week 19 CFL games

              Saturday, November 7

Montreal (14-3) @ Toronto (2-15)-- Alouettes prepping for playoffs, as Argos pack their bags and ready for long winter; Als won 25-0/27-8 the first two meetings this year, holding Argos to total of 344 yards. Als are 5-3 vs spread on road- all five of their road wins are by 13+ pts. Argos' last win was in Week 4, but five of their last eight defeats were by ten or less points. Six of last eight Toronto games stayed under the total.

Calgary (10-6-1) @ Saskatchewan (9-7-1)-- Roughriders can grab bye in first round with win here; they're 1-0-1 vs Stampeders this year, taking 24-23 decision in Alberta in Week 5 (+9.5), then teams played 44-all tie there three weeks ago (C, -4). Stamps are 4-1-1 in last six games, 4-4 on road, 0-2 vs spread as underdog. Riders are 3-3-1 last seven games; they won four of last five at home. Under is 7-2-1 in last ten Calgary games.

              Sunday, November 8

Hamilton (9-8) @ Winnipeg (7-10)-- These two will meet again in first round of playoffs next week, so they figure to hold back on some stuff in this game. Teams split pair of games earlier in year, both in Hamilton (25-13H, +1.5/38-28W, +6). TiCats are 7-1 vs spread on road this year, with last three road losses by total of five points. Bombers won four of last six games. Six of last eight Hamilton games stayed under the total.

                  Saturday, November 7

Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts (+9.5, 48)

Excluded from the playoff picture, the Argonauts are already preparing for 2010. So nobody will be surprised that they will take this opportunity to start with rookie QB Stephen Reaves. He can’t really do worse against the Als than Kerry Joseph or Cody Pickett. On the other side, the Alouettes, who secured first place and the privilege of hosting the East Finals, will try to write a new chapter in the history of the franchise by finishing the regular season with a 15-3 record. Ironically, that would also be the first time a CFL team can boast such a record since the 1997 Toronto Argonauts coached by Don Matthews.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo will start as will most of the usual Alouettes starters. Safety Matthieu Proulx, who suffered a fracture to his left hand, won’t make the trip to Toronto. This being said, head coach Marc Trestman held a practice for only the backup players and made no secret that he would like to play everyone against the Argos. The Alouettes lineup might become unrecognizable in the second half but that doesn’t matter because there’s a good chance that even the Als’ B-squad can shut down the pathetic Argos offence.

                  Pick: Montreal -9.5

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-1.5, 55)

This will certainly be the most exciting game of this last weekend of the regular season. This game will decide who finishes first and earns a week off before hosting the West Final November 22. For the Roughriders, a division championship would be a first in thirty three years. The Riders and Stampeders met twice this season and in both occasions, it has been extremely close. Saskatchewan won the first one by 24-23 and then on October 17, these two teams took a 44-44 draw in OT.

But last week in Hamilton, the Roughriders didn’t look like a potential champion. They conceded 196 rushing yards, 159 alone to DeAndra’ Cobb and QB Darian Durant completed only eight of the 20 passes for a meagre 66 yards, no touchdown and one pick. If the Riders defense can’t do better stopping the run, imagine the kind of field day the best RB in the country, Joffrey Reynolds, will have. There’s a possibility that the Roughriders will come up stronger and make people forget an awful performance, especially in front of their home fans. But that may not be enough against a more talented Stampeders team that is playing with the consciousness that each win brings them closer to their main goal - to defend their Grey Cup title at home.

                  Pick: Calgary +1.5

                  Sunday, November 8

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-1.5, 50)

The last time these two teams faced each other the Bombers pounded the Tiger Cats on Thanksgiving. But things have changed since that day. The Tiger Cats are coming to Winnipeg with renewed confidence after a surprising 24-6 win against the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week. It’s quite the opposite for Winnipeg, which after inflicting a huge loss to the Alouettes, got whipped in return in Montreal last Sunday. Blue Bombers quarterback Michael Bishop demonstrated that as much is he capable of great performances, he is also capable of the worst.

His opponent, QB Kevin Glenn, has been gifted with the luxury of an offensive line that didn’t allow a single sack over the last three weeks, giving him the time to tally 233 passing yards against the Riders. The same offensive line creates openings for the running game and DeAndra’ Cobb makes the most of the opportunities, averaging almost six yards per carry. It should be interesting to see how the front seven of the Bombers will get to a Kevin Glenn, who will be motivated against the team that got rid of him. Also consider the Tiger Cats players will be fully aware that a victory in this game would lead to an East Division semifinal in Hamilton, something their city has not seen in 10 years.

                  Pick: Hamilton +1.5

                  (Last Week 2-2, season 39-28-1)

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes at Columbus Blue Jackets (-182, 5.5)

The only NHL team yet to win on the road is the Hurricanes, who have been pretty bad everywhere but are awful when venturing away from home.

Overall, Carolina has six goals in its last five games. That includes a 6-1 loss at Philadelphia on Halloween and and 3-0 blanking at Florida on Wednesday.

The Hurricanes are 27th in the NHL in road scoring and 29th in road goals allowed. They also have taken the most penalty minutes (201) in road games and rank in the second half of the league in both sides of special teams on the road.

Carolina also plays and travels Friday night, while first-place Columbus is 4-2 when coming off one day of rest and has won the last two meetings by a combined 9-2.

                      Pick: Columbus

Buffalo Sabres at Boston Bruins (-115, 5.5)

The Bruins have had so many problems finding the twine thay they almost revisited "old-time hockey" and the days of Eddie Shore.

Boston was less than a minute from its third straight shutout loss before scoring in the last minute of regulation in Thursday's 2-1 shootout setback to Montreal. The Bruins had not been shut out in three straight games since 1929, when Shore was between the pipes.

Goalie Tim Thomas is doing his part to keep the Bruins in games, allowing just four regulation goals in that span. In all, Boston hasn't played to the over in a regulation game since Oct. 12.

Meanwhile, the Sabres have played to the under in their last five games, with goalie Ryan Miller surrendering two goals or less in four of those matches.

                      Pick: Under

                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Milwaukee Bucks (NO LINES YET)

At the NBA draft, Knicks fans groaned when Stephen Curry did not drop to them. Things might have been all right if the Knicks has grabbed Brandon Jennings, the early front-runner for Rookie of the Year.

Jennings is averaging 22.0 points and 5.3 assists while shooting 48 percent from the field, including 50 percent from the arc.

"Sometimes the challenge comes if the player has some sort of success, and as a coach you're happy for him and all that," Bucks coach Scott Skiles told SI.com. "But you also know there's a lot more there and you want to get more out of him."

While Jennings is flourishing, Knicks draft pick Jordan Hill has played two minutes and point guard Chris Duhon is averaging just 10.2 points and 6.8 assists on 31 percent shooting.

                            Pick: Milwaukee

Denver Nuggets at Atlanta Hawks (NO LINES YET)

Even with scoring sub J.R. Smith sidelined by a suspension, the Nuggets lead the NBA with an average of 115.4 points per game.

Denver also leads the league in free throws made (29.6) and attempted (37.6) per game, 3-point shooting (.470) and points per shot (1.44).

The Hawks are no slouches either, getting a spark from offseason addition Jamal Crawford to rank fifth in offense (108.0) and eighth in shooting
(.479). They also lead the NBA in free-throw percentage (.831).

Both teams look to run whenever possible and are content playing shootouts. The Nuggets are 17th in defense (101.8 ppg) and the Hawks are 19th (102.4).

This one will have an ABA feel to it.

                            Pick: Over
