    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, November 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks take on the Hornets, the Devils host the Capitals, and the Phillies try to stave off elimination in New York.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Yankees will try once again to wrap up the World Series on Wednesday night when the set returns to the Bronx for Game 6. New York will send Andy Pettitte to the mound in Game 6; lefthander Pettitte picked up the win in Game 3 of the series, giving up four runs on five hits over his six innings of work. The Phillies will counter with Pedro Martinez on Wednesday night; righthander Martinez lost Game 2, allowing three runs on six hits over his six innings pitched.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 10 games on tap for Wednesday, including Dallas at New Orleans. The Hornets will be trying to bounce back from a 117-111 road loss to the Knicks on Monday night, a defeat that dropped them to 1-3 through four games. Chris Paul poured in 32 points and added 13 assists for New Orleans in that loss, while Emeka Okafor picked up 24 points and 10 boards. David West scored 21 points.

Also on the NBA's schedule for Wednesday: Detroit at Toronto, Miami at Washington, Phoenix at Orlando, Indiana at New York, Boston at Minnesota, the Lakers at Houston, Atlanta at Sacramento, Memphis at Golden State, and Denver at New Jersey. The Nets lost their fourth straight game to start the season on Monday night, falling 79-68 to the Bobcats in Charlotte. Chris Douglas-Roberts had 20 points in the loss, and Brook Lopez tossed in 18 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up a half-dozen games on Wednesday, with the Islanders at Buffalo, San Jose at Columbus, Carolina at Florida, Calgary at Dallas, Phoenix at Colorado, and Washington at New Jersey. The Capitals lost 5-4 in overtime to the Blue Jackets last time out, and they also lost superstar forward Alex Ovechkin to an upper-body injury - Ovechkin is considered week to week. The Devils won their second straight game last time out, beating Tampa Bay 2-1.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Wednesday, November 4

      Can they keep pace?

The Indiana Pacers have covered their last five visits to New York, winning four in a row outright before taking a 123-119 loss as a 6.5-point underdog in February. The Pacers are getting 5.0 points with a total of 226.

      A look ahead

Temple has won six consecutive games straight up and is 6-1 against the spread this season. The Owls also have scored at least 24 points in their last six games, going 4-2 against the over in that stretch. Temple is giving 17 points - its biggest number as a favorite since Nov. 24, 2001 - to Miami of Ohio, which had lost 11 in a row until beating Toledo last week.

      Something to Ponder

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder’s bruised ribs are improving, according to a school spokesman. Third in the nation in total offense, Ponder suffered the injury early in last week's 45-42 win over North Carolina State but did not leave the game. The Seminoles are getting 8.5 points at Clemson.

      Pike to practice

Although Cincinnati quarterback Tony Pike is expected to practice Wednesday wearing a splint instead of a cast on his left arm, Bearcats coach Brian Kelly is leaning toward starting Zach Collaros - who has thrown seven TDs in two games - against Connecticut. Kelly said it is possible that Pike may play depending on how e practices. Cincinnati is giving 16.5 points to Connecticut.

      Irish eyes are smiling

Notre Dame will have back speedy receiver Michael Floyd when it hosts Navy. Floyd, who was averaging 160 receiving yards per game before breaking his collarbone Sept. 19 vs. Michigan State, was cleared by doctors Monday. The Irish are 11-point favorites and will be trying to avenge a home loss to Navy two years ago.

      Recent Reesing

In his first five games, Todd Reesing threw for more than 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns as Kansas went 5-0 (2-2 against the spread). In his last three games, he has thrown two TDs and four interceptions, also losing three fumbles and enduring a benching as the Jayhawks have lost three straight games (0-3 ATS). Reesing also has a groin injury and has been troubled by a shaky offensive line. Kansas is giving 2.5 points to rival Kansas State.

      In need of a Cook

Miami Heat guard Daequan Cook missed Tuesday's game vs. Phoenix and said he will miss Wednesday's game at Washington due to a strained right shoulder that is not getting better. The Heat are getting 3.0 points from the Wizards with a total of 193.5.

      Notable quotable

"He shouldn’t, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football. He really didn’t gouge my eyes. He really didn’t get a chance to get close to my eyes."

-- Georgia running back Washaun Ealey, reacting to the half-game suspension given to Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes by coach Urban Meyer after he stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet in last week's game.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

-- LeMoyne drove crosstown and stunned Syracuse 82-79 in Carrier Dome Tuesday night, in a college basketball exhibition game.

-- This is first time in ten years neither UCLA/Arizona is favored to win the Pac-10 hoop title. Cal/Washington are the favorites.

-- Arizona senior PG Nic Wise will play for his fourth head coach in four seasons this year. Wildcats have nine freshmen/sophomores.

-- Georgetown has to get Greg Monroe more than 8 shots a game this season-- thats all the young lefty got last year.

-- Colorado State opponents converted 60.3% of 3rd down plays over their last eight games, part of why Rams lost their last six games.

-- Warren Buffett spent $34B on the Burlington North RR, the second biggest railroad in country. Must be nice to write a check for $34B.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

        32) Buccaneers-- Only winless team terrible on two continents.

        31) Browns-- They're paying last GM until 2012 and they've already fired his successor. Must be a fun team to root for.

        30) Raiders-- How does Tom Cable keep his job? Seriously........

        29) Bills-- Coach is Yale graduate, QB is from Harvard, but you don't need an Ivy League education to know this is an awful team.

        28) Lions-- Over their last six games, Detroit has started one drive in the opponents' territory; their opponents started 12 in Lion territory.

        8) Cowboys-- Scored 103 points in winning their last three games; good test against the Eagles Sunday night.

        7) Bengals-- Led Chicago 31-3 at halftime in their last game, their fifth win in last six tries.

        6) Ravens-- Blitzed more against Denver, trying to protect DBs who had been burned during Baltimore's three-game losing streak.

        5) Patriots-- Is there any doubt they're going to win the AFC East?

        4) Broncos-- Interesting to see how they do against Steelers Monday, in first game after their first loss.

        3) Vikings-- Outsacked Green Bay 14-0 in their two 2009 meetings.

        2) Colts-- This has nothing to do with the Colts, but the QB coach out at New Mexico is Tee Martin, who replaced Peyton Manning as QB at Tennessee. Lobos are 0-8; the head coach has already been accused of both sexual harassment and assault. Not the best of seasons there.

        1) Saints-- Have answered every challenge so far. Are going to be very tough to beat in the playoffs in that building, should they get home field edge throughout NFC playoffs.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBL bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks (-5, 226)

The Knicks grabbed their first win of the season against the slow-starting New Orleans Hornets Monday night. New York coach Mike D’Antoni threw out his third different starting lineup in four games and he may have finally found the right unit.

Versatile guard Larry Hughes started at the two and power forward David Lee filled in at center. The juggling left Al Harrington coming off bench as the team’s sixth man. He responded by scoring a career-high 42 points.

New York still lives and dies with the 3-pointer. The Pacers are at the bottom of the league defending beyond the arc and the Knicks always play better on their home floor.

                Pick: New York -5

Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors (-6, 225)

Are there two teams more messed up than the Warriors and Grizzlies? Allen Iverson played his first game with Memphis Monday night and he’s already complaining about his playing time to coach Lionel Hollins and anyone else who’ll listen.

Iverson was not happy about coming off the bench and playing only 18 minutes, even though he had been bothered by a hamstring injury.

“Go look at my resume and that will show you that will show you that I’m not a sixth man,” he told reporters after the overtime loss to the Kings. “I don’t think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It’s just who I am. I don’t want to change what gave me all the success that I’ve had since I’ve been in this league.”

Oh boy. Throw in another coach killer like Zach Randolph into the mix and you know Hollins has his work cut out for him this season.

The Warriors can’t boast chemistry as one of their team strengths either. You can bank on both sides playing little to no defense and the points to rack up as a result.

                Pick: Over 225

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Report: NBA scoring up in season's first week

After one week of the NBA season, scoring is up nearly five points per team compared to the first week of last season, ESPN.com reported Tuesday.

The report cites statistics provided by the Elias Sports Bureau and also references increases in 3-point shooting and the number of teams looking to play at a faster pace, such as Houston, Memphis and Milwaukee. There is even a mention of new rims being used by the league.

According to figures in the report provided by Elias, through the first seven days of the schedule, teams are shooting 45.5 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from the arc and 76 percent from the line. The average game total is 199.9.

A year ago, the seven-day numbers were 44.3 percent from the field, 33.4 percent from the arc, 74.7 percent from the line and 190.3 points per game.

However, those numbers have not translated to totals wagering. The over is just 22-28 through Monday's games, a record helped by three overtime contests.

New York (4-0) and Utah (3-0) have played to the over in each of its games. Milwaukee (0-2), Dallas (0-3), Detroit (0-3) and Oklahoma City (0-3) have played to the under each time.

Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors [10:35 PM ET]

Grizzlies: Memphis won all three meetings versus the Warriors last season, including winning twice in Oakland. Before then, though, the Grizzlies had dropped seven in a row to Golden State. The Grizzlies are giving up 115.8 points per game, allowing opponents to shoot nearly 50 percent from the floor. The Grizzlies are off a 127-116 overtime road loss to Sacramento on Monday. The Kings’ bench outscored Memphis’ reserves, 67-14. Zach Randolph had 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead Memphis. Allen Iverson made his Memphis debut after missing the first three games because of a hamstring injury. Iverson had 11 points in 18 minutes, but was unhappy with his lack of playing time. Chemistry could be an issue. Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo got into a heated argument during the Grizzlies’ game on Sunday night against Denver. Fatigue could factor, too. This is the Grizzlies’ third road game in four nights.

The Grizzlies are 9-2 ATS on Wednesday.
The road team is 8-2 ATS in the series.

                        Key Injuries - None.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 110

Warriors (-6, O/U 225.5): The Warriors are surrendering an average of 115 ½ points in starting the season 0-2. The Warriors should be rested, though, having last played on Friday. Golden allowed Phoenix to shoot 53.6 percent from the floor in losing 123-101 on Friday. “Through two games we look like a bunch of guys playing for contracts instead of guys playing as a team,” said swingman Stephen Jackson. Monta Ellis leads Golden State in scoring at 22.5 points. Jackson is averaging 15 points per contest. The Warriors have been getting good play from Kelenna Azubuike, who is averaging 15 points, while shooting 61.9 percent from the field and 4.5 rebounds. Golden State has failed to cover 37 of its last 55 games as a home favorite. The Warriors have failed to cover five of the past six times they’ve hosted the Grizzlies. Golden State is 1-4 versus Memphis in its last five meetings.

The Over is 39-18-1 in the Warriors’ last 58 home contests.
Golden State is 21-10-2 ATS following a loss.

Key Injuries - Forward Ronny Turiaf (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 116 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at New Jersey Devils (-145, 5.5)

Another NHL superstar will be watching from the stands for the next couple weeks. Washington Capitals winger and reigning NHL MVP Alexander Ovechkin is currently listed as week-to-week by the team and will sit out Wednesday’s clash with the New Jersey Devils due to an upper-body strain.

Ovechkin leads the NHL in scoring with 23 points in his first 14 games of the season, scoring nine goals and adding 14 assists.

“We have to buckle down,” Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau told the media. “A goal a game he scores, so we got to play better defense and cannot allow four or five goals a game. You have to win 3-1 and 2-1 and if you get lucky sometimes make it a 4-2 game. I think we have enough character players who understand what we will have to do without Alex.”

Washington is visiting one of the best under plays in hockey. The Devils have finished below the total in four straight contests and boast a 3-8-1 over/under record to start the year. They beat Washington - with Ovechkin in the lineup - 3-2 in a shootout two weeks ago, playing under the 6-goal total.

                            Pick: Under 5.5

New York Islanders at Buffalo Sabres (-185, 5.5)

First-overall draft pick John Tavares isn’t the main reason the Islanders are the hottest team in hockey – but he’s a good start. The rookie forward has registered a point in each of the team’s four straight wins, two goals and two assists, heading into Wednesday’s game in Buffalo.

New York’s veteran corps is impressed with the youngster’s rapid improvement in the pros, especially mentor, teammate and roommate Doug Weight. Weight has opened his home to Tavares much like Pittsburgh Penguins great and team owner Mario Lemieux did with the Penguins’ budding superstars.

"Doug has made things very easy. All I have to do is focus in on hockey," Tavares told reporters. "I think I've taken that first step a lot quicker than I would have had I been on my own."

The Islanders have outscored their opponents 15-5 during this current hot stretch, getting great production from all their forward lines as well as goaltender Dwayne Roloson, who has been in goal for three of those victories.

                            Pick: New York +170

                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: No-vechkin and swine flu issues
                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            No-vechkin

The Washington Capitals announced that Alex Ovechkin is week-to-week with an upper-body strain.

According to Washington Times writer Corey Masisak, the Capitals don’t usually place the “week-to-week” label on a player unless the injury is serious. Washington coach Bruce Boudreau hopes Ovechkin won’t miss more than two weeks.

Boudreau has indicated that Washington will have to play a more defensive game in Ovechkin’s absence.

"A goal a game he scores, so we got to play better defense and cannot allow four or five goals a game.”

In three games without Ovechkin last year the Caps were 1-2, averaging only 1.67 goals per game.

                            Swine flu and you

So far the Edmonton Oilers have been the hardest hit by the flu. Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun reports that at least 10 players have been suffering from either H1N1 or a nasty strain of the regular flu.

Oilers coach Pat Quinn has noticed the effect the flu has had on his team.

"We've played good half games and then seemed to die,” said Quinn. “You don't like to make excuses, but maybe there's something in there."

Edmonton is 1-5-0 in its last six contests and has been outscored 20-9.

                            SOL (Shootout Losses)

One of the most frustrating occurrences for NHL bettors is when the team they back loses in a shootout.

Which team was the NHL’s worst in the shootout?

Damien Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times points out that the Tampa Bay Lightning were not only a league-worst 3-10 in shootouts last year, but they have also started out this season 0-4.

"It's unacceptable," said Lightning forward Steven Stamkos. "With the amount of skill we have, it's just one of those things. There's really no way to explain it. You have to score."

The Atlanta Thrashers had the league’s best shootout record last year at 7-1.

As an alternative to traditional straight betting, some betting sites offer game lines that apply only to regulation play.

                            The Cranderson effect

The NHL has released its Three Stars for October and Colorado Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson was named the first star.

Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault called the Avs goalie “the best player in the NHL right now.”

As Adrian Dater of the Denver Post observes, Anderson tied the NHL record for goaltender victories in October with 10.

The Avs have posted a 10-3-2 record, despite a schedule that included a four-game and a seven-game road trip.

How unexpected has Colorado’s success been? Through its first 15 games, Colorado has only been a favorite once this season, when they were -106 to beat the Carolina Hurricanes.

Anderson has started every game for Colorado, has a 2.11 GAA and is tied for the league lead with a .936 save percentage.

                            Pittsburgh Penguins California Tour

As Josh Yohe points out in his Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article, Pittsburgh is 1-13 with one tie in California dating back to 1999. The Penguins play the Ducks on Tuesday, Los Angeles on Thursday and San Jose on Saturday.

Thursday Nov. 5 – Tampa Bay Lightning at Ottawa Senators

Tampa Bay will be playing its third road game in four nights on Thursday in Ottawa. While the Lightning will battle fatigue, the Senators will have to worry about rust. The Senators will not have played since a Saturday loss at home to Atlanta.

Saturday Nov. 7, New York Rangers at Calgary Flames

The New York Rangers fly across the continent to play Vancouver on Tuesday, Edmonton on Thursday and Calgary on Saturday. Brent Sutter’s Flames will be ready for Saturday’s tilt, as it will be Calgary’s lone home game sandwiched between two road trips.

                              Len’s Top Five

                              Wednesday, November 4

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for November 4, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

Game 6 of the World Series is tonight in the Bronx. The Yankees lead the Phillies 3 games to 2. 7:57pm ET FOX.
Pedro Martinez will face Andy Pettitte who is pitching on 3 days rest for the first time in 3 years.

Times are tough. The world's largest automaker, Toyota, is pulling out of Formula One racing.

You know how college basketball teams schedule those cupcake teams early in the year? Syracuse played Division II Le Moyne last night at home, and LOST! It was dubbed an "exhibition" game.

                              2. I Rest My Case

Wow, so much is made of "rest" for pitchers. Are they that fragile? What about Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson who won clinching World Series games on 2 days rest? Gibson scoffs at all this talk of rest, especially with how much money these pitchers make. In the 1964 World Series Gibson won game 5 against the Yankees by pitching 10 innings on 3 days rest. And then he won game 7, a 9 inning complete game, on two days rest. It's an old quote, but apropos. "You rest when you're dead."

                              3. Daddy-O

How strange a sight to see Pedro Martinez on the mound for the Phillies in game 6 tonight. He of the legendary, "The Yankees are my daddy" quote when he pitched for the Red Sox. And Pedro incredulously said the other day that the media has turned him into "at times the most influential player that ever stepped in Yankee Stadium." Oh really? That Babe guy, Joe D. and the Mick might have something to say about that. Anyway subscriber Henry K. suggests the Yankees should have Don Zimmer throw out the first ball tonight. Zimmer of course was famously thrown to the ground by Pedro during a Yankees/Red Sox fight in 2003.

                              4. The Real Skin-ny

When in doubt, blame the media. It's a mess in Washington and we're not talking politics, it's the 2 & 5 Redskins. The organization is blaming the media for stirring up negative fan reaction. They are also banning TV crews from talking to tailgating fans. I think the organization is on the right track. If that damn media would stop printing the NFL standings, Redskins fans would have no idea that the team stinks.

                              5. One Good Turn

So during the Spurs/Kings NBA game on Halloween, a pesky bat kept flying around the court. Finally, Spurs guard Manu Ginobili swatted it out of the air to the cheers of the crowd. Sadly, the bat met his demise. End of story right? Wrong. Ginobili had to take rabies shots, and now PETA has chimed in. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Their statement: "To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own."
They must be fun people to go hunting with.

Happy Birthday: National League MVP and shortstop for the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates, Dick Groat. 79.
Bonus Birthdays: Puff Daddy, P. Diddy and Sean Combs. They are all 40 today.

Today in Sports: In a game 7 stunner, the Arizona Diamondbacks score twice in the bottom of the 9th against Mariano Rivera to beat the Yankees in the World Series. 2001.
Bonus Event: It was so last year. Barack Obama is elected Prez. 2008.
