    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, November 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics take on the Sixers, the Cavaliers play host to the Wizards, and the Penguins try to pick up a victory out in Anaheim.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Buffalo hosts Bowling Green on Tuesday night in early Week 10 college football action. The Bulls (3-5 SU, 3-4 ATS) are coming off a 34-31 overtime road loss to Western Michigan, with Zach Maynard throwing for 327 yards and Ike Nduka rushing for 172 yards. The Falcons (3-5 SU, 3-5 ATS) fell 24-10 to Central Michigan in their last matchup. Tyler Sheehan threw for 341 yards in that defeat.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on tap for Tuesday, including Boston at Philadelphia. The Celtics remained undefeated on Sunday, getting past New Orleans 97-87 at home. Paul Pierce led Boston's attack with 27 points in that contest. Ray Allen pitched in with 17 points, while Kevin Garnett had 14 points in the win. The Sixers picked up a 121-115 overtime road win over the Knicks on Saturday. Andre Iguodala poured in 32 points that day, while Louis Williams had 27 points.

Also on the pro hardwood on Tuesday: Denver at Indiana, Orlando at Detroit, Phoenix at Miami, Milwaukee at Chicago, the Lakers at Oklahoma City, Utah at Dallas, Atlanta at Portland, and Washington at Cleveland. The Cavaliers got back to the .500 mark on Saturday by beating Charlotte 90-79 at home. Mo Williams had a team-high 24 points for the Cavaliers in that victory, while Anthony Parker had 13 points. LeBron had a relatively quiet 14 points and nine assists that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL offers up five games on Tuesday, with Boston at Detroit, Atlanta at Montreal, Tampa Bay at Toronto, the Rangers at Vancouver, and Pittsburgh at Anaheim. The 11-3-0 Penguins fell 2-1 to Minnesota on Saturday night, with Pascal Dupuis providing the only Pittsburgh goal and Marc-Andre Fleury making 13 saves. The 4-6-2 Ducks are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to Phoenix on Saturday. Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne had the Anaheim goals in that defeat.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, November 3

      Tuesday night football

In their last four meetings with Buffalo, Bowling Green has averaged 36.5 points, going 3-1 straight up but just 1-3 against the spread, with the underdog covering each time. Host Buffalo is favored by 3.5 points with no total yet established.

      No place like home

The Utah Jazz visit the Dallas Mavericks and will try to end a a two-year trend. The home team has won and covered the last eight meetings between the clubs. The Jazz are getting 5.5 points with a total of 200.

      Road work

The Pittsburgh Penguins are 6-0 on the road, averaging 4.2 goals per game with a 4-2 mark against the over. At home, they are 5-3, averaging less than three goals per match with a 1-6-1 mark against the over. Without Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins put their perfect road mark on the line vs. Anaheim. Pittsburgh is +104 with a total of 5.5.

      Lakers lacking Pau

Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol may have a tear in the right hamstring that has kept him sidelined this season. He underwent an MRI on Monday but is not expected to play during the team's two-game road swing. Keep in mind that Allen Iverson had a partially torn hamstring that forced him to miss at least a month. Gasol has not played since Oct. 9 in the preseason. The Lakers are favored by 7.5 points at Oklahoma City with a total of 193.5.

      Redd alert

The Milwaukee Bucks will be without scoring guard Michael Redd for at least two weeks due to soreness in his surgically repaired left knee. Redd has averaged at least 20 points in the last six seasons but missed 48 games last season with a torn ACL. His minutes will go to Charlie Bell and Carlos Delfino. Milwaukee will be getting points at Chicago on Tuesday.

      Rodgers not a dodger

The Green Bay Packers have to find some protection for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who hs been sacked a league-high 31 times. Rodgers has a sprained foot and a sprained toe on his other foot that likely will limit his practice time this week but is not expected to keep him out of Sunday's game at winless Tampa Bay. Green Bay is giving 10 points with a total of 43.5.

      Not so simple, Simon

The Philadelphia Flyers will be without left wing Simon Gagne for at least six weeks after he has surgery for separate hernias in his groin and abdomen. He initially was considered day-to-day but has not played since Oct. 25. Gagne has averaged just under a point per game over his last four seasons.

      Staaled

The struggling Carolina Hurricanes will be without center Eric Staal for several games. Staal has an upper body injury suffered in Saturday's loss to San Jose. The Hurricanes have lost nine straight games and have managed just six goal in their last four matches, so losing a playmaker like Staal cannot help. Carolina takes its 0-5-2 road mark to Florida on Wednesday.

      Notable quotable

"I don't believe it. Doug Barron? Look at the man. Tell him to take his shirt off and ask anyone, 'Do you believe he's on performance-enhancing drugs?"

-- Golfer Rod Pampling, reacting to the news that Barron received a one-year suspension from the PGA Tour after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Barron once took off his shirt to play a shot out of water and revealed a pot belly.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Cliff Lee is like the dominant 12-year old pitcher in Little League; you're terrified to take him out of any game. He's been terrific.

-- Charlie Manuel got to the World Series with the worst closer in the major leagues this season. He has been a magician, win or lose.

-- Pedro Martinez gets another day in the sun and maybe a tryout for a 2010 roster spot; he is the Phillies' likely starter in Game 6.

-- Bronx Bombers were allowed to replace Melky Cabrera on roster due to a 2007 rule change allowing you to replace injured players while series is going on. Before that, you couldn't replace players.

-- Immense amount of pressure on Joe Girardi now, as know-it-alls in the New York media wanted him to pitch Gaudin in Game 5, instead of Burnett with three days' rest. They'll crucify him if Bronx loses.

-- I'm thinking the Phillies have to score a run an inning to sweep two games in the Bronx. Their pitching is just really shaky.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff on a chilly night.........

        13) If you don't think this has been a strange college football season, this should clear it up: Duke (last in bowl, 1994), Idaho (1998) and Temple (1990) will probably all go to bowl games this season.

        12) Interesting article by Buster Olney on espn.com about how small market teams might release marginal players headed for arbitration, and how the wealthier teams could scoop up some of these guys, widening the gap between the rich and poor teams. Just what baseball needs, the gap between big and small market teams widening. Terrific.

        11) I spent three years of my childhood rooting against Bill Walton and UCLA, but I came to really like his broadcasting work; I'm disappointed to report that Walton is retiring from broadcasting because of his back problems that make travelling difficult. He's an upbeat, pleasant guy who always has something positive thing to say. He'll be missed.

        10) What genius put Ozzie Guillen on FOX' **** show? Wouldn't it be better to put someone on TV you can actually understand?

        9) Watching Monday Night Football and listening to World Series on the radio as I type this: Jon Miller is a great radio announcer, not so good on TV. Of course, Joe Morgan says less on radio, always a plus.

        8) Missouri Tigers were outscored 59-6 in 2nd half of last four games.

        7) In last three games, Nebraska scored a total of seven 2nd half points.

        6) Jets' throwback uniforms look like the Steelers' unis'. Not good.

        5) Odd Stat of the Day: A Miami Hurricane has scored an NFL TD in every week of the NFL season since Week 15 in 2002.

        4) Senior QB Joe Webb of UAB has 35 runs of 10+ yards this season, more than anyone in the country. Too bad he's on a bad team.

        3) Denver Nuggets' GM Mark Warkentien has an idea to decide how the #8 seeds in NBA playoffs are decided. To avoid teams tanking late in the season, he suggests holding a tournament for teams 8-15, with the teams that win getting the #8 slot in each conference.

        2) College basketball teams have scrimmaged, but results are protected pretty well; would be nice to know who did what, but coaches aren't allowed to talk about who won or any statistical knowledge.

        1) I mean, Texas is scrimmaging Gonzaga in Denver this week; would be fun to find out how that one goes. Both teams are very good.

          This Day in Baseball

On November 3 in Baseball History...

1926 - Ty Cobb resigns as Tigers manager and announces his retirement from the game. Umpire and former Tigers infielder George Moriarty replaces him. Moriarty is the first man to hold baseball's four principal jobs: player, umpire, scout, and manager.

1934 - Although Lou Gehrig wins the Triple Crown with 49 home runs, 165 RBI, and a .363 average, Mickey Cochrane, with two home runs, 76 RBI, and a.320 average, is named American League Most Valuable Player. Dizzy Dean, with a 30-7 record, is chosen as National League Most Valuable Player.

1942 - Ted Williams is the Triple Crown winner in the major leagues, but the writers select second baseman Joe Gordon by 21 votes as American League Most Valuable Player. Gordon of the New York Yankees leads the American League with 95 strikeouts, the most ground balls hit into double plays (22), and the most errors at his position (28). Pitcher Mort Cooper gets the Most Valuable Player honor in the National League.

1953 - The rules committee restores the 1939 sacrifice fly rule, which says a sacrifice fly is not charged as a time at bat.

1960 - Vern Law, who was 20-9 with 18 complete games for the National League champion Pirates, is voted Cy Young Award winner. Warren Spahn finishes second.

1965 - Sandy Koufax, with a 26-8 record, a 1.73 ERA, and a record-shattering 382 strikeouts, is named Cy Young Award winner by a unanimous vote.

1967 - Boston's Jim Lonborg, who was 22-9 with 246 strikeouts for the American League champions, is named American League Cy Young Award winner.

1970 - Bob Gibson wins the National League Cy Young Award by a 118-51 margin over Gaylord Perry of the Giants. Gibson posted a 23-7 record for the Cardinals.

1981 - Brewers reliever Rollie Fingers (28 saves, 1.04 ERA) wins the American League Cy Young Award, collecting 22 of 28 possible first-place votes. The other six go to Oakland's Steve McCatty.

1982 - Pete Vuckovich becomes Milwaukee's second consecutive American League Cy Young Award winner, edging Jim Palmer. Vuckovich (18-6 with a 3.34 ERA for the Brewers) has the highest winning percentage in the majors over the past two seasons.

1987 - Oakland first baseman Mark McGwire, who hit forty-nine home runs, wins the American League Rookie of the Year Award. McGwire is the second player to win that league's award unanimously (Carlton Fisk was the first in 1972).

1989 - Lou Piniella is named manager of the Reds, replacing the banned Pete Rose.

1997 - Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra is the sixth player to be the unanimous choice for American League Rookie of the Year. Garciaparra, twenty-four, led the American League in hits (209), triples (11), and multi-hit games (68), while also setting the American League rookie record with a 30-game hitting streak.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: Today's best NBL bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers (+7, 191)

Things couldn’t be going any better for the Celtics. They’ve opened the season 4-0 with a big win at Cleveland under their belt and now they’ve got their star point guard locked up for the next five years.

Rasheed Wallace’s ability to come off the bench and play big minutes at either the four or five spot has helped mask some of the rust Kevin Garnett is showing. The Big Ticket hasn’t played more than 26 minutes in any game since the opening night win over the 76ers.

Garnett’s presence is restoring the C’s defensive intensity. Boston’s opponents are shooting just 39.1 percent from the field, good for second best in the league.

Expect a well rested KG, along with Wallace backing him up, to slow down Elton Brand and the 76ers.

              Pick: Celtics

Phoenix Suns at Miami Heat (-3.5, 216)

The Heat lead the Association in defensive field goal percentage, which is a big reason they’re 3-0 straight up and against the spread.

The Suns are also unbeaten but they’re doing it in the old Mike D’Antoni way: Shooting early, often and at a high percentage.

“He’ll test our defense in so many different ways,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra told the Miami Herald about Phoenix point guard Steve Nash. “It will be challenging night for our defense. But the fundamental things we’ve been stressing in training camp, our guys have taken to heart.”

Spoelstra would prefer his team to slow the pace down, but the Heat showed they didn’t mind pushing the ball and getting some easy hoops against the Knicks. They won’t be able to help themselves tonight either against Phoenix.

              Pick: Over

Boston Bruins at Detroit Red Wings (-180, 5.5)

The Boston Bruins haven’t been able to gain any momentum so far this season. They have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games, most recently falling 1-0 to the New York Rangers.

The main culprit in the Bruins’ slow start is their sputtering offense Goals have been hard to come by with scoring forwards Marc Savard and Milan Lucic both out.

“We played hard,” Bruins head coach Claude Julien told the Associated Press following Saturday’s loss to the Rangers. “We did everything, except right now we’re just not scoring goals. Until that happens, we’re going to be dealing with these types of games. It becomes frustrating for everybody.”

The Red Wings have had problems of their own in the early going, but returned home from their latest road trip with a 2-1-1 record. They finally look like they’re on the same page offensively after racking up 13 goals in their last three games.

                          Pick: Red Wings

Pittsburgh Penguins at Anaheim Ducks (-120, 5.5)

The Penguins ended an impressive month of October (11-3-0) with a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild at Mellon Arena on Saturday. The Pens outshot the Wild 35-15 and dominated most of the game.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who was involved in a fight with Wild defenseman Marek Ziglicky after the two collided at the end of the second period, doesn’t seem to think the loss is a major setback.

“We can keep our heads up after this one,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “We’ve played some good hockey. Our other two losses were ones we realized we could be better. If you’re going to lose, I guess it’s better to lose this way.”

The Penguins have been struggling with their power play going 3 for 23 on the man advantage in their last five contests since losing defenseman Sergei Gonchar.

Gonchar will miss the next three weeks with a broken left wrist, while center Evgeni Malkin (strained right shoulder) is out for at least two weeks and winger Tyler Kennedy (undisclosed injury) is sidelined indefinitely.

Pittsburgh will suffer from the lack of offensive star power and both teams should have a hard time finding the back of the net.

                          Pick: Under

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for November 3, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

The Phillies stay alive by beating the Yankees in game 5 of the World Series 8-6. The Yankees lead 3 games to 2 with game 6 tomorrow night in the Bronx.
The Saints go marching in to 7-0 after beating the Atlanta Falcons last night 35-27.
The Knicks will not lose 'em all. They beat New Orleans 117-111 for their first win of the season in 4 tries.
Linebacker Brandon Spikes for # 1 Florida attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey. His penalty? His coach is benching him for half a game. Thank God he didn't try to do something dirty.

                              2. It's Not Over Yet

There will be a game 6. We haven't been able to say that in 6 years. And you know it's not your typical post season when Alex Rodriguez comes alive and Derek Jeter hits into a crucial 9th inning doubleplay. Last night's game ended with A-Rod standing in the on deck circle. Wouldn't you have loved to see him get a crack in the 9th? The Yanks have the edge in starting and closing pitching here on out but hey you never know. It's not a Fall "Classic" yet, but we might be getting there. All we need is a dramatic extra innings Phillies win in game 6 to make this a "November to Remember."

                              3. Dewey Defeats Truman!

Maybe I'll start doing "Headlines" kinda like Jay Leno. Subscriber Larry N. sent along the Macy's ad in yesterday's Philadelphia Inquirer. It advertised Phillies T-shirts that read "Congratulations Phillies Back-to Back Champions." A little premature exhilaration, eh?
And subscriber Dianna R. liked this photo caption in the Washington Post. "Virginia's Marquis Weeks caps off his 100-yard kickoff return for the touchdown. "That was just instinct. Kind of like running from the cops," said the senior tailback.
                              Aren't student athletes grand?

                              4. Star-Bury

One of the Top 5's faves was at it again last weekend. The unemployed Stephon Marbury bought a ticket in Row A for the Knicks home opener. So he sat in the front row. But that's Row AA (Spike Lee territory.) Marbury had to move to the second row, so instead he went home. Too bad. He missed the Knicks getting wasted in overtime. He would have felt right at home.

                              5. The Great Pumpkin.....Race

They've been doing it for years in Boulder Colorado. The Naked Pumpkin Race. You wear a pumpkin on your head, and nothing else. But police had enough. They threatened to arrest the revelers which would label them "sex offenders." (The ACLU charged it was a violation of "naked runners' rights." I somehow missed that when I studied the Constitution.) So alas there was no race this Halloween. And to think they call the Masters Golf tournament "A tradition like no other."

Happy Birthday: Former Heavyweight Champ Larry Holmes. 60.
Bonus Birthday: Hold your ears. One of the worst National Anthem singers of all time, Roseanne Barr. 57.

Today in Sports: Wilt Chamberlain scores 72 points vs. the Lakers. Shoot, that was nothing. He had already scored 100 vs. the Knicks the previous March. (Featured in my new kids book "The Greatest Moments in Sports" due out one week from today! Order your holiday gifts now! Pretty shameless, huh?) 1962.
Bonus Event: Lisa Gherardini's husband paid some painter to do a portrait of her. You can find it at the Louvre. Some people refer to the painting as the Mona Lisa. 1507.
