    This Day in Baseball

On November 2 in Baseball History...

1913 - St. Louis Browns player-manager George Stovall, fired the previous summer, is the first major-league player to jump to the Federal League, signing to manage Kansas City.

1937 - American League batting champ Charlie Gehringer is named Most Valuable Player by the BBWAA.

1938 - Jimmie Foxx is voted Most Valuable Player of the American League for the third time, with Yankees catcher Bill Dickey second in the voting.

1960 - Roger Maris nips Mickey Mantle for the AL's Most Valuable Player award, 225-222, the second-closest vote ever. The closest was the Joe DiMaggio -- Ted Williams race in 1947.

1971 - Pat Dobson of the Orioles pitches a no-hitter against the Yomiuri Giants in a 2-0 win. It is the first no-hitter in Japanese-American exhibition history. The Orioles compile a record of 12-2-4 on the tour.

1972 - Steve Carlton caps off a remarkable 27-win, 300-strikeout season as the unanimous choice for the National League Cy Young Award.

1974 - The Braves trade Hank Aaron to the Brewers for outfielder Dave May and a minor-league pitcher to be named later. Aaron will finish his major league career in Milwaukee, where he started it in 1954.

1976 - Padres southpaw Randy Jones beats out Jerry Koosman of the Mets for the National League Cy Young Award. Jones led the league with 315 innings, and posted a 22-14 record for the fifth-place Padres.

1977 - Phillies pitcher Steve Carlton outpoints Tommy John of the Dodgers to win his second Cy Young Award. Carlton led the National League with 23 wins, losing ten, and posted a 2.64 ERA.

1988 - Oakland shortstop Walt Weiss becomes the third consecutive A's player to win the American League Rookie of the Year award, joining sluggers Jose Canseco (1986) and Mark McGwire (1987).

    Write-up

    Monday, November 2

Could be sixth World Series in row to finish in 4 or 5 games, but Lee has been awesome this fall (3-0, 1.35 in four starts) and is 2-1, 2.14 in three starts against Bronx this year (two with Cleveland). Burnett is 1-0, 3.70 in four postseason starts; he gave up one run in seven IP to win Game 2 of World Series. Both series games in this park went over the total, after two in Bronx had stayed under.

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies [FOX | 7:57 PM ET]

Yankees: The Yankees are going with A.J. Burnett in an effort win the World Series in five games. Burnett got the best of Pedro Martinez in a 3-1 victory in Game 2. Burnett has made three quality starts in four postseason outings this season going 1-0 with a 3.55 ERA. If you discount one bad inning against the Angels, the right-hander would have a 2.13 ERA. Burnett went 14-9 during the regular season with a 3.99 ERA. The Yankees have won six of his last seven starts. New York has won 10 of its last 13 postseason games. The Yankees have won 51 of their last 71 games. Derek Jeter has the highest batting average in the World Series of any starter at .412. Mariano Rivera has picked up saves in each of the last two nights, but has thrown just a combined 13 pitches.

The Yankees are 4-8 in their last 12 road playoff games.
The Under is 12-6-2 in New York’s past 20 games.

Key Injuries - Outfielder Melky Cabrera (leg) is questionable.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Phillies (-$1.35, O/U 8.5): The Phillies will try to stave off elimination by pitching their ace, lefty Cliff Lee. The Game 1 winner has a 0.54 ERA in four postseason starts this season. Lee dominated New York in the opening game winning 6-1 at Yankee Stadium throwing a six-hitter. Lee is 3-0 this postseason. He has the seventh-best ERA of any pitcher in single postseason baseball history. Philadelphia has won 11 of its last 14 home playoff contests. Jayson Werth, though, is the only Phillies starter batting above .267. Worth is hitting .308. Slugging first baseman Ryan Howard is batting only .176. The Phillies are 36-17 in their past 53 home games. They are just 5-17, however, in their last 22 interleague games at Citizens Band Park. The over is 209-6-2 in the Phillies’ last 28 games. The two teams have gone under in five of their past seven meetings.

The Phillies have won 21 of their last 28 games on Monday.
The Over is 5-0-1 in the Phillies’ last six home games.

            Key njuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies (-142, 8.5)

The expectations for the Yankees have been World Series Championship or bust ever since they opened the vault to grab CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira in the offseason.

That lofty goal is a game away from being a reality after the Yanks rallied to score three two-out runs in the bottom of the ninth last night.

“There’s no question that I have never had a bigger hit,” Alex Rodriguez told reporters after driving in Johnny Damon for the go-ahead score.

Damon hit a single, stole second and than continued to third base because there wasn’t any one covering the bag. The shift was on, which meant third baseman Pedro Feliz was covering the runner at second.

“I know nobody was on third because I was shifted to the other side,” Feliz told ESPN. “I got the runner, and went to the bag and he saw nobody covered third and he took off.”

So now the Phillies have to hope staff ace Cliff Lee has some more postseason magic left in his arm to keep them alive. Lee pitched a masterpiece in Game 1 and he’ll be dueling against a short rested A.J. Burnett.

Look for the Phillies to win this home game before eventually losing Game 6 in New York.

                Pick: Phillies
