    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, November 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Packers host the Vikings, NASCAR takes on Talladega, and the Phillies and Yanks play Game 4 of the Fall Classic.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Broncos and Colts will both try to remain perfect when they take the field in early-afternoon NFL action on Sunday. Denver (6-0 SU, 6-0 ATS) will be on the road against Baltimore (3-3 SU, 4-2 ATS), and they've been listed by the oddsmakers as 3-point road 'dogs (with the total at 41.5 points). Indianapolis (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS) will be hosting San Francisco (3-3 SU, 4-1-1 ATS) in their 1:00pm ET matchup; the Colts are 13-point favorites, with the game's total at 44.5 points.

The other early games on Sunday: Houston (-3.5) at Buffalo, Cleveland at Chicago (-13), Seattle at Dallas (-9.5), St. Louis at Detroit (-4), Miami at the Jets (-3.5), and the Giants (-1) at Philadelphia. The key 4:00pm ET game is then Minnesota at Green Bay (-3), with Vikings QB Brett Favre returning to Lambeau Field to take on his old team. Rounding out the NFL slate: Oakland at San Diego (-16.5), Jacksonville at Tennessee (-3), and the finally Carolina at Arizona (-10).

There's also one college football game on Sunday night, with Marshall at Central Florida. UCF is pegged as a 7-point favorite, with the contest's total at 43 points.

As well, the CFL offers up Winnipeg at Montreal on Sunday afternoon. Oddsmakers have the Alouettes as 9-point home faves, with a total of 51 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The World Series remains in Philadelphia for Game 4 on Sunday night, with Joe Blanton getting the ball for the home side. Righthander Blanton has made three appearances so far in the playoffs, picking up a no-decision against the Dodgers in the NLCS (three earned runs over six innings). The Yankees will counter with CC Sabathia, who was tagged with the loss in Game 1 (two earned runs over seven innings). Lefthander Sabathia has a 1.52 ERA through four playoff starts.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Sunday, with Orlando at Toronto, Chicago at Miami, Portland at Oklahoma City, Memphis at Denver, Minnesota at Phoenix, Atlanta at the Lakers, and New Orleans at Boston. The 1-1 Hornets are coming off a 97-92 win over Sacramento on Friday night, with Chris Paul pouring in a game-high 31 points in that contest. The 3-0 Celtics dispatched Chicago 118-90 last time out, with Paul Pierce and Eddie House both scoring 22 points in the win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are four games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Sunday, with San Jose at Carolina, Columbus at Washington, Colorado at Vancouver, and Boston at the Rangers. The Rangers lost their second straight game last time out, falling 3-2 in Minnesota on Friday night. Dane Byers and Marc Staal had the markers for New York in the loss, and Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series takes to the track at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday for the seventh race of the Chase, the Amp Energy 500. Tony Stewart is pegged as the 7/1 Vegas favorite to get the win at Talladega, with Jeff Gordon next at 15/2, and Kyle Busch third at 8/1. Juan Montoya is listed at 9/1 odds to take the checkered flag on Sunday, with points leader Jimmie Johnson fifth at 10/1 odds. Johnson holds a 118-point lead on Mark Martin in the driver standings.

Finally, the 2009 Formula 1 season comes to a close Sunday with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Jenson Button has already wrapped up the '09 drivers championship.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, November 1

What can the Browns do for you?

The Cleveland Browns have scored just four offensive touchdowns and a meager 72 points this season, but have an idea how to jump start the attack this year: move electric return man Joshua Cribbs to running back.

"Yeah, I think anytime you can get the ball in Josh's hands, even if they give you a good look the one time, you've got to give another him another chance, another couple chances,” Browns coach Eric Mangini said. “I've said this before, he's dynamic with the ball in his hands."

Anything Cribbs would do would be a big help the Browns against Chicago. Cleveland is listed at +13 with a total of 40 points.

      Such a headache

Eagles star running back Brian Westbrook remains a game-time decision with a concussion for Philadelphia, which has been hit hard by injuries this year. But it’s a great unknown what impact he will have for the Eagles, since the team also signed running back P.J. Hill this week as they prepare to play the Giants. Westbrook has just 327 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in five games. The Eagles are listed at +1 with an over/under of 44.5 points.

      Talladega nightmare

Three-time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will start at the front of the pack for Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway – but that doesn’t have him very confident. Johnson, who leads the points race, has won only once at the track and has an average finish of 17.7 there over the course of his career. Johnson is listed at just +800, so consider looking somewhere else for the restrictor-plate race.

      Below the belt

Devin Harris needs a little love. The New Jersey Nets guard will miss 7-to-10 days with an injured right groin. He also indicated that the recovery time wouldn’t “be shorter.” Harris averaged 15 points, 7.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds in the Nets' first two games.

"I felt like I couldn't beat certain guys off the dribble," Harris told reporters. "I can't play that way."

The Nets host Charlotte on Monday night and are 0-2 ATS this season.

      Swatted Hornets

New Orleans must make a trip to New England to play Boston Sunday. And that has the Celtics grinning. Boston is 3-0 SU and ATS this season, winning by an average of 22 points per game. Boston also 7-3 ATS in the team’s past 10 meetings, including a 12-point home win last year. The Celtics are listed at -11 with a total of 183.5.

      Alexander the Great

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is leaving very little doubt that he is the best player in the league. The Russian leads the league in both points (23) and goals (14) as Washington has only two regulation losses in its first 13 games. And when Ovechkin faces the Blue Jackets on Sunday, expect big things – he has four goals in four career games against Columbus. The Capitals are listed at -172 with a total of 6.

      Wild thing

Former Minnesota star Marian Gaborik has been a stud for the Rangers, netting 10 goals with eight assists in the team’s first 12 games. However, he missed the team’s game on Friday with a knee injury and his status for Sunday’s game against Boston is uncertain. The Bruins, however, are a horrible 1-7 in their past eight against the Rangers.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Toronto Raptors (+6.5)

Don’t expect Vince Carter to make much of a homecoming.

The former Toronto star twisted his ankle in the Magic’s win over the Nets earlier in the week, and even tough X-rays came back negative, the former star once known as “Air Canada” likely will be sidelined. This is a huge blow for the Magic, who are trying to overcome the offseason defection of Hedo Turkoglu to the Raptors.

Orlando also is without forward Rashard Lewis, who is suspended for the first 10 games of the season.

"I heal like a young guy so I'll be good (Saturday)," Carter told the Associated Press. "Hopefully, I'll be back Sunday. We're going to be smart about it. It's a long season. I'm feeling better now that I am walking on it."

Toronto, meantime, has split its first two games and is led by stud forward Chris Bosh, who is averaging 29 points, 14 rebounds and three assists per game. And Orlando never fails to well against the Raptors in Canada – they are just 3-9 ATS in their past 12 meetings in Toronto.

              Pick: Raptors

Portland Trail Blazers at Oklahoma City Thunder (+2, 186.5)

When Portland and Oklahoma City meet, expect plenty of … defense?

That’s right. These two squads have a tendency of shutting each other down and matching up well against each other despite featuring super stars Brandon Roy and Kevin Durant. Seven of the team’s past eight meetings have gone under the total, with both teams combing to go under in all four of their games this season entering the weekend.

Portland opponents are shooting just 40.8 percent from the floor this season and a very poor 27.6 percent beyond the arc. Meantime, Oklahoma City is limiting the opposition to just 38.9 percent on its field goals, including a staggering 24.2 percent on its threes.

This game should feature plenty of impressive plays and some highlight reel-quality dunks, but don’t expect the scoreboard to reflect it.

              Pick: Under

San Jose Sharks at Carolina Hurricanes (+144, 5.5)

It’s been a very stormy season so far for the Hurricanes. The team has only two wins in its first 11 games, including a 6-1 thrashing in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. And with San Jose coming to town, it won’t get any easier.

The Sharks, who many predict will represent the Western Conference in the Stanley Cup finals, is coming off a 3-1 win over conference-leading Colorado and has won five straight and seven of its past eight. The key for San Jose has been the stellar play of veteran Patrick Marleau, who has 10 goal and nine assists this year.

Meantime, the Hurricanes can’t do anything right. The squad is ranked 28th in both goals for (2.2 per game) and goals against (3.6).

The Sharks have been feasting on the competition, so don’t expect Sunday to be any different.

                        Pick: San Jose -156

Colorado Avalanche at Vancouver Canucks (-125, 5.5)

The Avalanche are the last team that Vancouver wants to see. The Canucks have lost two of their past three, are floating right at .500 and already have dropped a 3-0 loss to Colorado earlier this year. Oh yeah, the team also is starting backup goalie Andrew Raycroft.

Colorado, meantime, suffered just its second regulation loss on Friday night, but still leads the Western Conference thanks to a stingy defense. The team has the third-ranked defense in the league, yielding a stingy 2.1 goals per game. The team also has the second-ranked penalty kill in the league, killing of 87.1 percent of its opponent’s man advantages.

The Avalanche have won 10 of the team’s past 13 meetings and expect more of the same in this one.

                        Pick: Avalanche + 115

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-7)

The Blue Bombers are coming to Montreal fired up after inflicting the Alouettes with a rare 41-24 loss - the Birds’ only loss to an East Division rival this year. It was a fourth win in five games for Winnipeg, which can now challenge for second place in the East and therefore host the division’s semifinal. The Blue Bombers will play their last regular season game at home against the Hamilton Tiger Cats. WR Adarius Bowman, who lost consciousness after violently hitting the ground while trying to catch a pass, is considered doubtful for this rematch. Without their star QB Anthony Calvillo and top defensive players like Davis Sanchez, Shea Emry and Diamond Ferri, the Alouettes where outplayed last Saturday in Winnipeg. Could it be that the coaching staff of both the Tiger Cats and the Bombers found some weaknesses in Montreal’s armor?

In the Alouettes’ locker room, the defensive squad swears they will finish the season strong and make people forget these two bad performances. Sanchez, Emry and Ferri will be back in the lineup but the Als will be without excellent DT Eric Wilson (knee) and their possible Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate Jerald Brown (groin), both of them possibly not returning before the East Final on November 22. But since Anthony Calvillo will also be back in action, the Bombers might find it quite difficult to repeat last week’s feat.

                            Pick: Montreal -7

                            Last Week 3-1, season 37-26-1
