    This Day in Baseball

On November 1 in Baseball History...

1914 - Connie Mack begins cleaning house, asking waivers on Jack Coombs, Eddie Plank, and Chief Bender. Colby Jack goes to the Dodgers. Plank and Bender escape Mack's maneuvering by jumping to the Federal League. Despite the pennant, Philadelphia fans did not support the A's and the club lost $50,000.

1938 - National League batting champ Ernie Lombardi is named the Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers. Chicago pitcher Bill Lee is runner-up.

1942 - Larry MacPhail enters the Army. The Dodgers look to St. Louis for leadership. After two decades in St. Louis, Branch Rickey splits with owner Sam Breadon. He will sign to become General Manager at Brooklyn.

1946 - The right foot of Cleveland owner Bill Veeck is amputated, a result of a war injury in the South Pacific two years before. Veeck has had a tremendous impact on promotion in a half season of ownership. A minor but typical change is the regular posting of National League scores on the Cleveland scoreboard, a departure from the long-standing practice of both leagues.

1951 - The National League votes Brooklyn catcher Roy Campanella the league's Most Valuable Player for what will be the first of three such awards.

1960 - Baltimore shortstop Ron Hansen is voted American League Rookie of the Year, getting twenty-two of twenty-four votes. The other votes go to teammates Chuck Estrada and Jim Gentile.

1966 - Sandy Koufax becomes the first three-time winner of the Cy Young Award. He is a unanimous winner for the second-straight year. This is the last year that only one award is given for pitchers in both of the major leagues.

1968 - Thirty-game winner Denny McLain is the unanimous American League winner of the Cy Young Award.

1978 - Ron Guidry is the unanimous choice for the American League Cy Young Award. The Yankees southpaw led the league in wins, winning percentage, shutouts, and ERA.

1979 - Edward Bennett Williams buys the Orioles from Jerold Hoffberger for a reported $12.3 million.

1982 - At a meeting in Chicago, the major league owners vote not to renew Commissioner Bowie Kuhn's contract. The American League owners voted in favor of Kuhn 11-3, the National League 7-5. But his eighteen votes left him two shy of the three-fourths majority required for reelection. Kuhn will remain on the job until a successor is found.

1988 - Chris Sabo, who hit .271 with eleven home runs and forty-six stolen bases as the Reds third baseman, wins the National League Rookie of the Year award. Chicago's Mark Grace is runner-up.

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies [FOX | 8:20 PM ET]

Yankees (-$1.60, O/U 9): CC Sabathia is going on three days’ rest after throwing 113 pitches in a 6-1 Game 1 loss. Sabathia held every hitter in the Phillies lineup except Chase Utley to two hits over seven innings. Utley, though, homered twice. Sabathia is 3-1 with a 1.52 ERA in four postseason starts this season. The big southpaw also pitched on three days’ rest in the league championship series beating the Angels 10-1 in Game 4. Sabathia allowed five hits in eight innings with five strikeouts. New York is 7-1 in Sabathia’s last eight road outings. The Yankees are 19-7 in Sabathia’s last 26 overall starts. New York has won 50 of its past 70 games. The over has cashed in 13 of Sabathia’s last 16 road starts. The under, though, is 7-3-1 in the Yankees’ last 10 games. The visiting team is 19-40 when Mike Everitt has been the home plate umpire.

The Yankees are 12-3 in their last 15 games during Game 4 of a series.
New York is 46-18 in its last 64 games versus a right-handed starter.

              Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Phillies: The Phillies are 19-8 in their last 27 playoff games, but have dropped their past seven interleague matchups. Right-hander Joe Blanton gets the start. He was 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA during the regular season. He received a no-decision in his only postseason start, allowing three earned runs in six innings in Game 4 of the National League championship series against the Dodgers. He made two relief appearances versus Colorado in the first round of the playoffs. Blanton is 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA in four career starts versus the Yankees. He’s given up 22 hits – including five homers – and 12 walks in 22 innings. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez are a combined 13-for-34 (.382) against Blanton with five home runs. Philadelphia has won eight of Blanton’s last 10 starts. The Phillies are 9-0 in Blanton’s last nine Sunday starts. The under is 9-4-1 in Blanton’s last 14 home starts.

The Phillies are 36-16 in their last 52 home games.
The Phillies are 37-17 in their last 54 games versus a left-handed starter.

              Key Injuries - None.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies (+161, 9)

The Yankees had all sorts of questions after the first game of the World Series. Could they rely on A.J. Burnett to deliver in Game 2? Who would step up from their bullpen besides Mariano Rivera? When would Alex Rodriguez rediscover how to make contact with the baseball?

But all those questions have been answered over the past two games. Burnett pitched a beauty in Game 2, the bullpen – outside of Phil Hughes – was outstanding in relief of Andy Pettitte Saturday night and A-Rod knocked out his first World Series homer in Game 3.

The Yanks lead 2-1 heading into Game 4 tonight and now it’s the Phillies that have all the questions. Where’s the Cole Hamels of a year ago? Who can shutdown the Yankee batting order other than Cliff Lee? Can Ryan Howard, who’s struck out in seven of his last eight at-bats, start carrying his weight in the middle of Philly’s lineup?

New York manager Joe Girardi is sending out ace lefty CC Sabathia on three days’ rest for a second straight start and CC says he’s not worried about the short turnaround from his last appearance.

"I've had enough rest the past two months to be able to feel comfortable enough to go out there and pitch on three days’ rest," he said.

Sabathia threw 113 pitches in Game 1 of the series on Wednesday, but Girardi has good reason to think his hefty hurler can shoulder the extra load.

Sabathia pitched eight innings and gave up just one run on short rest in the Yanks’ 10-1 Game 4 win of the ALCS against the Halos. He also carried the Brewers to the postseason last year pitching multiple times down the stretch on three days’ rest.

Still, it’s hard to pick against the defending champs down 2-1 in the series and playing in front of their home fans. Dating back to last season, the Phillies are 11-2 in their last 13 home playoff games.

                Pick: Phillies

                  Write-up

                  Sunday, November 1

Total of only 11 runs scored in first two World Series games, then 13 in Game 3; Phillies don't have enough pitching to shut down Bronx bats. Blanton gave up four runs in six innings in his only postseason start, vs Los Angeles. What does it say that the guy only started once in Phillies' 12 playoff games this year? Sabathia is 3-1, 1.82 in six postseason starts this season, allowing two runs in seven IP in Game 1 of this series.
