    This Day in Baseball

On October 29 in Baseball History...

1920 - The Yankees sign Red Sox manager Ed Barrow as business manager, completing the front office team that will build the game's most successful record. Hugh Duffy replaces Barrow in Boston.

1931 - Lefty Grove, winner of 31 games for the Philadelphia A's, is named AL MVP. He led the league in strikeouts for the seventh straight season and topped all pitchers in winning percentage, ERA and complete games.

1942 - Branch Rickey, the architect of the St. Louis Cardinals' farm system, resigned as the team's vice president.

1945 - Happy Chandler, who had continued to serve in the U.S. Senate after becoming commissioner, resigns his political office. He will move the commissioner's quarters to Cincinnati.

1949 - The White Sox make arguably their best trade ever, sending catcher Joe Tipton, who hit .204 in his one season in Chicago, to the Athletics for young Nellie Fox.

1969 - Tom Seaver, who won 25 games to help lead the Mets to one of the most unlikely championships in baseball history, is voted the NL Cy Young Award winner.

1975 - Fred Lynn, who led the league in runs, doubles and slugging percentage for the AL champion Red Sox, is the overwhelming choice as AL Rookie of the Year.

1979 - Willie Mays severed all ties to major league baseball after signing a contract with the Bally Corporation, which is involved with legalized gambling in Atlantic City, N.J.

1981 - Bill Giles, Phillies vice president for the past 11 years, heads a group that purchases the club for just over $30 million, the highest price paid to date for a major-league club. Giles is the son of longtime NL president Warren C. Giles.

1985 - Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar is suspended for the first 10 games of the 1986 season as a result of his World Series Game Seven tantrum during which he twice bumped home plate umpire Don Denkinger.

        Write-up

        Thursday, October 29

Keep in mind team that won Game 1 is 11-1 in last 12 World Series, so ton of pressure on Burnett (0-0, 4.42 in three playoff starts this fall) to even series for Bronx. Bomber nemesis Martinez (seven shutout innings at LA in only '09 playoff start) gets nod for Philly; he is on down side of hill, but Pedro is also 6-3, 3.13 in 12 career playoff starts. Phillies are now 19-5 in last 24 playoff games. Would expect higher scoring game in this one, after last night's pitcher's duel. Wouldn't be surprised if Phils went to bullpen early and often, once hitters saw Pedro once or twice.

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees (-191, 9)

                  Pitching matchup

Pedro Martinez (Philadelphia Phillies) vs. A.J. Burnett (New York Yankees)

                  Pedro Martinez (5-1, 3.63 ERA)

Martinez was part of the 2004 Boston Red Sox rotation that completed the historic comeback against the Yankees in the ALCS then went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals, with Martinez picking up a win in Game 3. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out six batters.

This season, the Phillies blew the dust of the veteran righty for the final chunk of the regular season and playoffs. Martinez surprised even his team by returning to his Cy Young winning form. In the postseason, he again put up a seven inning shutout gem, but was let down by the Phillies bullpen in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS.

Against the Yankees, Pedro is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in six career playoff starts. For his career, he’s 11-11 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 total starts versus New York and should be the target of plenty a Bronx Cheer Thursday night.

                  A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04 ERA)

Burnett was a member of the Florida Marlins World Series team in 2003, however, he pitched only four games all season before undergoing surgery. He finally got a taste of the postseason this year and is 0-0 with a 4.42 ERA in three trips to the mound. His most recent start lasted just over six innings in which the right-hander allowed four runs in the opening frame, then was untouchable through five innings until surrendering two runs in the seventh.

Burnett has struggled with his stuff this postseason. He’s walked a total of eight batters over those three starts and has watched his pitch counts climb to an average of just under 100 pitches per game despite lasting a little over six innings per start.

In his last appearance against the Phillies, Burnett was hit hard for three home runs and five runs over six innings in a 7-3 loss in May. For his career, he is 5-8 with a 4.85 ERA in 16 starts against Philadelphia. Burnett was 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA at new Yankee Stadium this season.

                  Hitting

In Game 1, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley showed bettors who the real power team was with two home runs in his team’s 6-1 victory. Utley is hitting .324 with three home runs and four RBIs. Also getting to the Yankees staff in the World Series opener was Ryan Howard (two hits) and Raul Ibanez, who had two RBIs off one hit.

New York was stymied by Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee, who limited the Bronx Bombers to just six hits and an unearned run in nine innings while striking out 10 batters. Getting knocks for the Yankees was Derek Jeter, who had three hits and scored the team’s lone run. October hero Alex Rodriguez was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts, giving the New York media some front-page fodder. Rodriguez seemed to have snapped out of his postseason funk before Game 1 and is still hitting .389 in the playoffs. Another bad performance would have the wolves at A-Rod’s door – again.

                  Weather

The Game 2 forecast is calling for partially cloudy skies over the Big Apple with a 20 percent chance of rain and temperatures dipping into the mid-50s. There is a light breeze blowing in from left field at 5 mph.

                  Pick: Over 9

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees [FOX | 7:57 PM ET]

Phillies: The Yankees haven’t seen the last of Pedro Martinez after all. The 38-year-old right-hander takes the mound for Game 2. He last pitched in the Bronx in 2005. Martinez went 5-1 with a 3.65 ERA in nine starts down the stretch after signing a one-year deal with Philadelphia during the All-Star break. In 14 playoff appearances, Martinez is 6-2 with a 3.13 ERA. “I think he’s still got quite a bit left,” Phillies manager Charlie Manual said. In 38 career outings versus the Yankees, Martinez is 12-13 with a 3.41 ERA. He last faced the Yankees in postseason in the 2004 ALCS. Martinez is 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA in six playoff appearances versus the Yankees. The Phillies have won six of their last eight games. Chase Utley has reached base safely in a record 26 straight postseason games. The Phillies are 7-2 in their past nine road playoff contests.

The Over has cashed in 6 of Philadelphia’s last seven road games versus a right-handed starter.
The Over is 13-4 in the Phillies’ last 17 road contests.

                      Key Injuries - None

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Yankees (-$1.85, O/U 8.5): The Yankees are turning to A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04 ERA) to even the series for them. New York has won 11 of the past 13 times Burnett has started at Yankee Stadium. New York is 5-1 in Burnett’s past six overall starts. Burnett pitched better at home going 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA compared to 8-6 on the road with a 4.83 ERA. The weather forecast for today’s Game 2 is calling for mostly clear skies with a low of 48. New York has won seven of its last 10 playoff games. The Yankees have captured 41 of their last 52 home contests. The under has cashed in the Yankees’ last seven World Series home games. The under is 11-1-1 in New York’s last 13 games at Yankee Stadium. The under also is 8-2-2 in the Yankees’ last 12 games when facing a right-handed starting pitcher.

The Under is 13-6 in the Yankees’ last 19 interleague contests against a right-handed starter.
The Over is 18-7-1 in New York’s past 26 Thursday games.

                      Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Notes: Book - Money on over in Game 2
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        MLB

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees

                        Phillies lead series 1-0

                        Line/Total: Opened Yanks -182 and 9 under (-120).
This morning, got sharp play on Yanks (-182), so moved game to the current number of -200. Total still unchanged at 9 (under -120). Book is rooting for Yankees tonight, as almost 45 percent of the cumulative action on the side is backing the Phillies. Also, a big decision on the total, as 80 percent of action here is backing the Over.

                        Injury Report: None

Comments: The Phillies regained home-field advantage after Cliff Lee continued his playoff dominance in New York Wednesday. Phillies now send 38-year-old Pedro Martinez to face the Yankees. One reason that Philly manager Charlie Manual didn’t use Cole Hamels here is that left-handed hitters had nine hits in 15 at bats, including three home runs. With the short porch in right at the new Yankee Stadium, that’s why Manual is going with Martinez, who won’t be phased by the big game atmosphere.

Prop of Game: Derek Jeter (Yankees) Will He Record a RBI: No (-145)
