    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, October 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Memphis plays host to East Carolina, the Flyers take on the Capitals, and the NBA season hits the hardwood in four cities.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football game on the Tuesday schedule has East Carolina at Memphis, with the Pirates opening as 4.5-point road favorites. East Carolina (4-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) pounded Rice 49-13 last time out, with Patrick Pinkney throwing for 231 yards and three touchdowns in that victory. The Tigers (2-5 SU, 1-5 ATS) fell 36-16 to Southern Miss last game; Will Hudgens connected on just one TD strike.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA season gets underway on Tuesday night with four games: Boston at Cleveland (-4.5), Washington at Dallas (-8.5), the Clippers at the Lakers (-10), and Houston at Portland (-9.5). The Rockets enter the season without their two longtime stars - guard Tracy McGrady is out indefinitely as he recovers from knee surgery, and center Yao Ming will miss the season due to foot surgery. Lakers center Pau Gasol is questionable for Tuesday night with a sore hamstring.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just three games on the ice on Tuesday night, with Colorado at Edmonton, Detroit at Vancouver, and Philadelphia at Washington. The Flyers were beaten 4-1 at home by the Sharks on Sunday night, with Brian Boucher giving up four goals on 28 shots in his first start of the season. Darroll Powe had Philly's lone goal. The Capitals are coming off a 3-2 OT win over the Islanders. Jose Theodore made 28 saves that game, and Brooks Laich scored the winner.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, October 27

      Defense wins championships

There were 15 games on the first two days of the NBA season a year ago, and the under was 10-5. There are four games Tuesday and 12 games Wednesday, with high totals of 210 for New York Miami and 209 for Utah-Denver, both on Wednesday.

      Howard's end

Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard will miss Tuesday's season opener vs. the Washington Wizards and perhaps several weeks with a sore left ankle that underwent minor reconstructive surgery in May, ESPNDallas.com reported Monday. Dallas was 33-19 with Howard and 17-13 without him last season. In his place, the Mavs likely will start defensive-minded Quinton Ross. The Mavs are giving eight points with a total of 205.

      Power failure

The Detroit Red Wings are -106 at Vancouver, which seems odd given their recent troubles. Detroit is 0-3-1 on the road, dropping the first two games of a five-game trip while managing just three goals and going 1-for-12 on the power play. Meanwhile, the Canucks have won three in a row overall and are 5-1 at home. They have killed 19-of-20 penalties over their last five games.

      Jakin' it?

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox would not commit to quarterback Jake Delhomme as his starter at Monday's media briefing, according to the Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald. Delhomme threw three interceptions in Sunday's 20-9 loss to Buffalo, raising his season total to 13 plus two lost fumbles. The backups are Matt Moore and A.J. Feeley. The Panthers are getting 9.5 points with a total of 42.5 at Arizona on Sunday.

      It's not Game Seven

On Opening Night, the host Portland Trail Blazers are giving 9.5 points with a total of 186.5 vs. the Houston Rockets, who knocked them out of the playoffs in six games last season. The Blazers will be without Nicolas Batum (shoulder surgery) but have lots of depth at small forward in Travis Outlaw and Martell Webster.

Of greater issue is that the teams closed that postseason series with four straight unders with a high total of 185. The Rockets are without Yao Ming and figure to rely on defense, pace and coaching to squeeze out wins.

      Tuesday night football

East Carolina is just 2-10 against the spread in its last 12 road games. But that slide doesn't include its last visit to Memphis in 2007, which the Pirates won, 56-40, as a six-point favorite. ECU has covered the number in 10 of its last 11 meetings vs. Memphis, which has been scuffling without quarterback Tyler Bass, who is out for the season. The Pirates are giving four points and are 1-1 ATS as road favorites this season.

      A bad break

The Atlanta Thrashers are about to find out how good they are without Ilya Kovalchuk, who underwent a CT scan Monday that revealed a broken bone in his right foot that will sideline him four weeks. Kovalchuk has nine of Atlanta's 28 goals and is the primary reason the Thrashers are fifth in the league in scoring at 3.5 goals per game and third on the power play at 28.1 percent. With Kovalchuk, Atlanta (4-3-0-1) is 7-1 against the goal line.

      Hoosier daddy?

Indiana is just 4-4 straight up but 5-2 against the spread - missing by a single point vs. Ohio State - and may be in line for another cover at Iowa on Saturday. Hawkeyes running back Adam Robinson, who was on crutches at the end of last week's 15-13 win over Michigan State with an ankle injury, was not on the depth chart released Monday. The freshman had a season-high 189 yards vs. the Spartans and leads Iowa with 629 yards. His backups are
freshman Brandon Wegher and Paki O’Meara. Indiana is getting 17.5 points and won outright in its last visit to Iowa in 2007.

      Notable quotable

"My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches. My father played for the coach from "rememeber the titans". Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn."

-- Gramatically challenged Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, reportedly using his Twitter account to criticize Chiefs coach Todd Haley. The account has been made private and the team is gathering information.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- When Kareem Abdul-Jabbar lost on Jeopardy, he lost to the guy on Laverne and Shirley who played Lenny. Not good.

-- Do you think NBC Sports would ever refer to the city of Vancouver as "spectacular" if the Winter Olympics weren't being held there?

-- Mack Brown's Texas Longhorns are now 12-0 the week after their biggest rivalry game, Oklahoma. Thats impressive.

-- Since moving to St Louis in 1995, the Rams have sold out 114 of 120 home games, despite fielding a bad team more often than not.

-- Steelers have now given up a TD on special teams or offense in five consecutive games. Strange for a good team.

-- Cool thing about the NFL is that stars sometimes come from weird places: Kurt Warner went to Northern Iowa, Miles Austin played at Monmouth and Marques Colston went to Hofstra.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13........

        32) Buccaneers-- I like the new QB, but this coach is overmatched-- he had to call the GM for permission to change QBs Sunday.

        31) Rams-- Win a game already. Big test in Detroit this week. They have lot of needs, mostly on offense. Could use a great pass rusher, too.

        30) Browns-- Eric Mangini will soon be coaching a D-III college team.

        29) Titans-- Interesting to see how they play this week, coming off bye after their tank job in the Foxboro snow.

        28) Raiders-- Al Davis fired Shanahan/Kiffin, and withholds money in both cases- the coaches sue him. His current head coach assaults one of his assistants, and is allowed to stay as head coach. Go figure.

        8) Cardinals-- 3-0 on east coast this season. Future Hall of Famer Kurt Warner is in first place again. Whisenhurt is an excellent coach.

        7) Bengals-- Explosive on offense; a 31-3 halftime lead over the Bears was an impressive display. Will miss pass rusher Odom, though.

        6) Patriots-- They crushed two hideous teams the last two weeks, so we reserve judgment until they beat someone halfway decent on the road.

        5) Vikings-- Rematch with Packers is early in season; they need to get Peterson more carries, keeping Favre out of harm's way.

        4) Steelers-- I wish I had stock in Terrible Towels.

        3) Broncos-- They're dangerous as long as people continue to give them no respect. Underdogs again this week, this time in Baltimore.

        2) Colts-- Best team in AFC so far. Better balanced than in the past.

        1) Saints-- Arch-rival Falcons come to town Monday night, in front of a souped-up Superdome crowd. Most underrated rivalry in the NFL.

          This Day in Baseball

On October 27 in Baseball History...

1960 - Trying to jump ahead of the NL, the AL admits Los Angeles and Washington to the league with plans to have the new clubs begin competition in 1961. Calvin Griffith is given permission to move the existing Washington Senators franchise to Minnesota. League president Joe Cronin says the AL will play a 162-game schedule, with 18 games against each opponent.

1980 - In a shocking announcement, Astros owner John McMullen fires president and GM Tal Smith, replacing him with Al Rosen, former GM of the Yankees. Smith will soon be named Major League Executive of the Year. The move prompts a rebellion among the Astros 20 limited owners (who together own over 60 percent of the club), and on Nov. 24 McMullen will give up his sole authority to run the club, accepting a position on the club's newly formed executive committee instead.

1985 - The Kansas City Royals, behind Bret Saberhagen's five-hitter, beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-0 in Game 7 of the World Series.

1986 - The New York Mets won the World Series with an 8-5 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game 7.

1989 - The World Series resumed after a 10-day delay because of the San Francisco earthquake. Oakland, behind two homers by Dave Henderson, beat the Giants 13-7 in Game 3.

1991 - In a Game Seven that rivals any in World Series history, the Braves and Twins go scoreless through nine innings. Lonnie Smith is decoyed into pausing at second base to keep him from scoring the winner for Atlanta in the eighth. Gene Larkin's single over a drawn-in outfield in the 10th is the difference in the first extra-inning Game Seven in 67 years. Jack Morris, who pitches the 1-0 shutout, is named Series MVP.

1996 - After two humbling losses at home, the New York Yankees won their first World Series title since 1978 with a 3-2 victory over the defending champion Atlanta Braves in Game 6.

1998 - President Clinton signed a bill overturning part of baseball's 70-year-old antitrust exemption, putting baseball on a par with other professional sports on labor matters. The new law overrides part of a 1922 Supreme Court ruling that exempted baseball from antitrust laws on grounds that it was not interstate commerce. That exemption deprived baseball players of protections enjoyed by other professional athletes and that players' association blamed for contributing to baseball's eight work stoppages since 1972, including the disastrous 232-day strike in 1994-95.

Los Angeles Clippers at Los Angeles Lakers (-10, 207)

Fresh off of last year’s championship title run, the Lakers are just as determined and maybe even more talented this season. It makes sense then that oddsmakers have the Purple and Gold favored to hoist another Larry O'Brien Trophy.

Even with big man Pau Gasol doubtful for the Lakers season debut, expect the Lake Show to shine as bright as the championship rings they'll be flashing prior to tip-off Tuesday night.

Newly acquired Ron Artest and reigning league MVP Kobe Bryant will be too much for the Clippers to handle on both sides of the ball.

With all the hype surrounding the first overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft, The excitment of the Clippers season opener is drained a bit with prize prospect and No. 1 overall pick Blake Griffin expected to miss the contest because of a minor left knee injury.

                    Pick: Lakers -10

Houston Rockets at Portland Trail Blazers (-9.5, 186.5)

This rematch from last year’s Western Conference first round matchup between is missing one key component. All-Star center Yao Ming.

The 7-foot-6 center will miss the entire campaign after re-fracturing his left foot. Houston will miss Yao’s presence in the paint, especially against elite slashers like Portland's Brandon Roy.

All-Star guard Tracy McGrady will also miss at least the first half of the year while rehabbing from micro fracture surgery.

With Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla doing work on the glass, and Steve Blake and newly acquired veteran guard Andre Miller sharing duties at the point, expect the Trail Blazers to come out gunning at the always rowdy Rose Garden.

                    Pick: Trail Blazers -9.5

                              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals (-140, 6.5)

Philadelphia goalie Brian Boucher had a number of reasons to want to win Sunday’s matchup against the San Jose Sharks. He was making his first start this season, facing his former team and playing in front of his dad.

But Boucher crumbled under the pressure, letting in four questionable goals in a 4-1 loss to the Sharks.

“All four of them, they were awful goals to give up,” Boucher told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “They were backbreakers. You can’t expect to win when the goalie gives up four goals like that.”

Ray Emery has done a good job in net for the Flyers so far this season and may get the nod on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals in place of Boucher. Whoever’s between the pipes will have his work cut out for him against the Caps, who own the fourth best scoring offense in the league.

                              Pick: Capitals

Colorado Avalanche at Edmonton Oilers (-125, 5.5)

The Edmonton Oilers would like to forget their latest road trip which started with a 5-2 thumping in Calgary Saturday night and ended with a 2-0 loss to the Canucks Sunday.

The Oilers were forced to play three games in four nights in three different cities during that stretch and had a number of players battling the effects of the flu. But the team isn’t willing to blame Sunday’s lethargic performance on illness or fatigue.

“There was a lot missing,” Patrick O'Sullivan told the Edmonton Sun. “They played yesterday too. Yeah, our team is sick, so what? We couldn't get any rhythm and we needed to score on our power play, which we didn't do."

Edmonton’s offensive woes should continue against Colorado Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson. Anderson stopped 48 of 49 shots fired at him during Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings and has been instrumental in getting his team to the top seed of the Western Conference.

The under is 5-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams.

                              Pick: Under
