    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, October 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Pats and Bucs play overseas, the Colts try to beat up on the Rams, and the Cards travel east for a game with the Giants.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Patriots and Buccaneers will take the field at London's Wembley Stadium in early-afternoon NFL action on Sunday, with Tom Brady and company coming off a 59-0 rout of the Titans. The Bucs (0-6 SU, 1-5 ATS) will once again go for their first win of the season - they fell 28-21 to the Panthers in their last contest. Oddsmakers have pegged the Patriots (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) as big 15-point favorites for the overseas matchup, with the total for the game listed at 45 points.

Other 1:00pm ET games for Sunday afternoon: Green Bay (-9) at Cleveland, San Francisco at Houston (-3), San Diego (-5) at Kansas City, Minnesota at Pittsburgh (-5.5), and Indianapolis (-14) at St. Louis. The Colts (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS) remained unbeaten with a 31-9 pasting of the Titans two weeks ago; Indy had a bye last week. The Rams (0-6 SU, 2-4 ATS) fell just short of their first victory of the season last time out, as the Jaguars booted an OT field goal in the 23-20 win.

The late afternoon games on Sunday feature Buffalo at Carolina (-7), the Jets (-6) at Oakland, Chicago at Cincinnati (pick'em), Atlanta at Dallas (-4), and New Orleans (-6.5) at Miami. The primetime matchup then has Arizona at the Giants (-7). The Cards (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) are coming off a 27-3 win over the Seahawks, with Kurt Warner throwing for 276 yards and two scores. The Giants (5-1 SU, 4-1-1 ATS) fell 48-27 to the Saints last weekend, losing for the first time this year.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Yankees will try to close out the ALCS once again on Sunday night when they host the Angels in Game 6 with a 3-2 series lead. Andy Pettitte will get the ball for New York in this contest; lefthander Pettitte picked up a no-decision in the third game of the series, surrendering three earned runs on seven hits over his 6 1-3 innings of work. The Angels will counter with Joe Saunders on Sunday; lefthander Saunders gave up two earned runs over his seven innings in Game 2.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up three games on Sunday, with San Jose at Philadelphia, Columbus at Los Angeles, and Edmonton at Vancouver. The Oilers and Canucks met in Edmonton on Monday night, with Nikolai Khabibulin making 39 saves in a 2-1 win for the home side. Patrick O'Sullivan and Sam Gagner had goals for the Oilers, while Steve Bernier had the lone Canucks tally in the defeat.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will take the track in the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson will be gunning for his third consecutive victory, and he leads teammate Mark Martin by 90 points in the Chase standings heading into this event. Johnson has also won the last two races at Martinsville, and five of the last six events on the track. Jeff Gordon, who sits third in the standings, has seven career wins at Martinsville.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, October 25

      King of pole

Ryan Newman can’t wait to see what he can do with a decent start in Martinsville, Va. Newman, who finished sixth after starting 27th in a May race at the track, claimed the pole on Friday afternoon, finishing nearly three-tenths of a mile-per-hour faster than Jeff Gordon. Listed at +1500, Newman is a solid play to bring home the checkered flag.

      Penning a new chapter

Oilers forward Dustin Penner was called overpaid, out of shape and unmotivated by critics last year. So far this season, everyone has been forced to call him one of the league’s top scorers. Though nine games, the leftwing is third in the NHL in scoring with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists). Expect him to do more of the same on Sunday against Vancouver, which is allowing a soft, 3.0 goals per game. The visiting Oilers are listed at +147 with a total of 5.5.

      How ‘bout a Revolution?

New England needs a win – at worst a tie – to have a shot at making the playoffs. Columbus, meantime, has locked up the Supporters' Shield – best record in the league – and figures to rest most of its key players to avoid any more injuries similar to what happened to defensive rock Chad Marshall, who went down last month with an MCL strain. The Revolution have played Columbus tough, and figure to be worth a long look, listed at +195 with an over/under of 2.5 goals.

      Something about Bob

The Indianapolis defense is going to get even better this week. Safety Bob Sanders, the 2007 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, looks to make his season debut against the Rams after missing extensive time with a knee injury. The Colts defense is ranked seventh in yards allowed but second in points given up. Indianapolis is listed at -13.5 with a total 45.5.

      Turning up the heat

After a week of being limited in practice, Falcons running back Michael Turner (353 yards, 6 TDs) appears to be fully healthy and ready to go for Atlanta against Dallas. The workhorse should get even more carries than normal as backup running back Jerious Norwood has not practiced all week and is listed as doubtful. The Falcons are listed at +4.5 with a total of 47.5.

      London time

The Patriots figure to roll over the winless bucks Buccaneers, but the squad has to deal with 3,000 miles of travel, a red-eye flight and early morning practices, leaving the team drained entering the weekend. “We’re tired,” nose tackle Vince Wilfork told the team’s Web site. “We’ll rest up today.” The Patriots, who are 0-2 SU on the road this season, are listed at -14 with a total of 43.5.

      OCNN

"I am that source now. I'll be the leak for all 32 teams."

        Six-pack for Sunday

Some NFL trends with Week 7 upon us...........

-- Houston covered five of last seven games coming off a win.

-- Saints covered six of last seven as non-divisional road favorite.

-- Steelers are 8-3 vs spread when hosting an NFC team.

-- Tampa Bay covered five of last 16 as an underdog.

-- Rams are 4-11-1 vs spread when getting 9+ points.

-- Falcons are 7-3 vs spread as a non-divisional road underdog.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday......

        13) Highest of drama in East Lansing, where Iowa scored on last play of game, their only TD of the night, keeping their magical unbeaten season going with an unlikely 15-13 win at Michigan State.

        12) Second week in row USC was jerking around throwing ball with less than 10:00 left and a two-TD lead; Barkley threw INT both games, and Trojans had to sweat out both wins. Oregon State gives them fits.

        11) Temple Owls have won five games in a row. Doesn't happen often.

        10) 6-1 Idaho Vandals were getting 15.5 points in Reno, scored 45 and still didn't come close to covering, losing 70-45 to the Wolf Pack, who have covered 18 of their last 21 games as a home favorite.

        9) Indiana led 28-3 after running a kick back for a TD at Northwestern, but lost 29-28 to the spunky Wildcats, who now have won games this season that they trailed in by 21-3 and 28-3 scores.

        8) Nebraska had eight turnovers, seven points and lost 9-7 at home to the improved Iowa State Cyclones, who last won in Lincoln in 1977. ISU has to be first team ever with +8 turnover ratio to win by 2 points.

        7) Navy beat Wake Forest 13-10 without throwing one pass. Ball State won 29-27 at Eastern Michigan, completing 2 of 10 passes for 1 yard.

        6) Shocking score of the week: Texas A&M 52, Texas Tech 30.

        5) TCU has now won games at Virginia-Clemson-Air Force-BYU this season. If Notre Dame did that, some writers would have them at #1.

        4) Kid named Johnthan Banks from Mississippi State ran two INTs back for TDs, which doesn't happen every day.

        3) Oregon trailed 3-0 in second quarter at Washington before turning the game around on blocked punt for TD, then scored another TD on drive kept alive by a fake FG. Ducks blew game open later on, won 43-19.

        2) Tennessee outgained Alabama 341-256 but lost, thanks to blocked FG on last play; that huge wind around 7pm Saturday was everyone in Alabama taking a huge sigh of relief after Tide survived the Vols, 12-10.

        1) Game of the Day was Clemson's 40-37 OT win in Miami, game in which both teams scored a defensive TD and Clemson's Spiller ran kick back for a TD. Huge win for a team that recruits a lot in Florida.

          This Day in Baseball

On October 25 in Baseball History...

1911 - Fred Merkle's 10th-inning sacrifice fly scored Larry Doyle to give the New York Giants a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series. The victory cut the A's lead in the Series to 3-2.

1955 - Baseball great Branch Rickey steps down as GM of the Pirates and moves into an advisory role. Joe L. Brown, son of the actor, replaces him.

1973 - The Cubs trade six-time 20-game winner Ferguson Jenkins to the Rangers for third baseman Bill Madlock and utility man Vic Harris. Meanwhile, San Francisco trades three-time home run champion Willie McCovey, a Giant since 1959, together with a minor leaguer to the Padres for pitcher Mike Caldwell.

1978 - Gaylord Perry becomes the first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. Perry cops the NL honor with a 21-6 record and a 2.72 ERA for the Padres.

1981 - Steve Yeager and Pedro Guerrero hit consecutive homers in the seventh inning, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the World Series.

1985 - The Angels announce that they will not offer seven-time batting champion Rod Carew a new contract for the 1986 season, effectively ending his 19-year career. Carew finishes with 3,053 hits and a .328 career batting average.

1986 - The New York Mets rallied for three runs with two outs in the 10th inning against the Boston Red Sox to win 6-5 and push the World Series to a decisive seventh game. The tie-breaking run scored on Boston first baseman Bill Buckner's error on Mookie Wilson's slow grounder.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins, behind Frank Viola, won their first World Series championship, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 in Game 7.

1995 - Steve Avery throws six innings of three-hit baseball and Pedro Borbon Jr. comes out of the bullpen for his first appearance in 19 days to save Atlanta's 5-2 win in Game Four.

1996 - Frank Torre, the brother of Yankee manager Joe Torre, receives a heart transplant after months of waiting. Frank was a recipient of a World Series ring as a member of the Milwaukee Braves when they beat the Yankees in 1957 -- and his brother Joe will make him a gift of a World Series ring that's 39 years newer after Game Six.

1997 - Chad Ogea gets two hits, drives in two runs and scores another while also earning the win. The Indians force a seventh game with the 4-1 win over the Marlins.

Major League Baseball announced early Saturday night that Game 6 in the Bronx has been postponed until Sunday evening at 8:20 p.m. ET. The Yankees lead the series, 3-games-to-2. The Angels were scheduled to start Joe Saunders and the Yankees were going to have Andy Pettitte take the mound. But that could change for at least one team.

“If there is an opportunity to look at bringing a guy like John [Lackey] back, it’s something we would certainly consider,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the New York Times. “We’ve talked about a bunch of different things.”

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is taking a different approach.

“We plan on Andy starting our next game for us,” he told the New York Times.

            NOTE:
Keeping the above mentioned circumstances in mind, if there is a change in the pitching matchup, we will attempt to post as any updated information that may be available. The way it stands at the time we are going to our first postings for Sunday, the following trends and index information are identical to Saturday’s postings.

Yankees (-$1.75, O/U 9): The last time the Yankees were in the ALCS in 2004, they lost a series to Boston after being up 3-0. That could be on the mind of the New York players. The Yankees have won 40 of their past 51 home contests. Southpaw Andy Pettitte didn’t get a decision pitching against the Angels this past Monday, giving up three earned runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He was tagged for two homers. Pettitte is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA during the postseason after going 14-8 with a 4.16 ERA in the regular season. The Yankees are 6-0 the last six times Pettitte has started with four days of rest. New York also is 7-1 the last eight times it has been favored with Pettitte on the hill. Pettitte, though, was 6-4 with a 4.59 ERA at home compared to 9-4 with a 3.61 ERA on the road.

The Under is 9-1-1 in New York’s last 11 home games.
The Under has cashed in 9 of Pettitte’s last 12 home starts.

                      Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

                        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-175, 9)

                        Pitching matchup

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) vs. Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees)

                        Joe Saunders (16-7, 4.60 ERA)

The left-hander can’t be blamed for failing to record a decision in his only postseason start this year – a 4-3 loss in the Bronx in Game 2. Saunders allowed a meager two earned runs on six hits over seven innings. He also showed stellar command, walking only one against five strikeouts.

The former Virginia Tech star has been fantastic for the team down the stretch, and hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since Aug. 7, a span of nine starts. In his only other outing against the Yankees this season, however, he was tagged for five runs on nine hits in just five innings.

                        Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA)

The 2001 ALCS MVP has been his usual consistent self this postseason, churning out 12 2-3 innings over which he has allowed 10 hits but just four earned runs. However, his most recent outing was a 5-4 loss to the Angels in Game 3 in which he allowed three runs on seven hits, including two homers, in 6 1-3.

The Angels also have absolutely crushed Pettitte this season. In 24 innings against the Halos this year, he has been tagged for 17 earned runs on a whopping 28 hits, complete with a horrendous seven strikeouts against nine walks. Home plate could become a turn-style for the Angles on Saturday night.

                        At the plate

Los Angeles can’t forget its bats back in Orange County this time. The Angels scored a meager four runs in two games during their first trip to the Bronx this series, but responded by averaging 4.3 runs per game on their matchups on the left coast. The team has been bolstered by the hot bat of Jeff Mathis. The catcher hit a terrible .211 during the season, but became the first play in postseason history to record six straight hits against the Yankees and was a spectacular 3-for-4 in the team’s Game 5 victory. He has four doubles in the series.

Alex Rodriguez continues to be a force for the Yankees. The third baseman is hitting .368 with three homers and five RBI in just 19 at-bats. But even more impressive against the Angels has been the hot-hitting Melky Cabrera, who is swinging his stick at a .381 clip with a pair of extra-base knocks and four RBI.

                        History

Since 1995 - when Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Game Six starter Andy Pettitte became major leaguers and the Yankees began their run of postseason success, they have been pushed to the limit in eight series.

They are just 3-5 in those games, winning only one since capturing their last World Series title in 2000.

The most infamous of those losses was Game Seven of the 2004 ALCS, which took place at Yankee Stadium and completed Boston's historic comeback from a 3-0 deficit. But there was another in Game Five of the 2005 ALDS vs. the Angels.

During their postseason dominance of the last 15 years, the Yankees have been outstanding at avoiding ultimate games, perhaps because they know that they have not played well in them. There is a sense of urgency to Game Six, which the Yankees have understood and acted on in the past. Look for them to do it again.

                        Final analysis

The Angels are right – the pressure is on the Yankees after failing to close out Game 5 in Anaheim. Too bad New York is used to it by now. Even A-rod is thriving.
Pettitte isn’t perfect, but he is MLB’s all-time leader in postseason starts and innings pitched. He will do enough to allow his team’s big bats to do enough damage to thrust his team back into the Fall Classic. Get ready for it Yankee haters – this team is poised to win yet another championship.

                        Pick: Yankees -175

Payoff pitch: Today’s best mound matchup
                          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) vs. Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees)

                          Joe Saunders (16-7, 4.52 ERA)

Much was made of Angels manager Mike Scioscia's decision to use Saunders over Scott Kazmir as his lefthander of choice in Game Two. Given how both have pitched in the ALCS, that looks like a good decision right now.

Saunders is back on the mound at Yankee Stadium, where he allowed two runs, six hits and a walk in seven innings, striking out five in his first outing in 13 days. This start will be on six days rest.

That continued a stretch of soild pitching by Saunders that is approaching two months. He has not lost in nine starts since Aug. 7, an outing that was followed by a stint on the disabled list with shoulder woes.

In his last nine starts, Saunders is 7-0 with a 2.56 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. That stretch includes two starts vs. the Yankees, going 1-0 with a 2.35 ERA and a 0.91 ERA.

This is undoubtedly the biggest start of Saunders' career. During the season, he was not particularly tough in pressure situations but was a different pitcher in Game Two.

Current Yankees have hit .284 (31-of-109) with five homers and 18 RBI vs. Saunders. Most of the damage has been done by Alex Rodriguez (7-for-14, 2 HR) and Derek Jeter (7-for-15, 1 HR). Mark Teixeira is 2-for-16 and Robinson Cano is 1-for-11.

                          Andy Pettitte (15-8, 4.08 ERA)

This will be Andy Pettitte's 38th postseason start. He has made a season's worth of starts made in pressure situations, going 15-9 with a 3.90 ERA.

Pettitte already has made two starts in this postseason, going 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA. He was extremely sharp in winning the clincher vs. Minnesota and was taken off the hook in Game Three vs. the Angels, pitching 6 1-3 innings in both games.

The lefthander also has been pitching well for an extended period, going 7-2 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 13 starts since Aug. 4. However, he has been a better pitcher on the road this season, and this is his first home start of the postseason.

Pettitte faces lineups loaded with righthanders and was considerably better against them this season. Lefthanded hitters batted .282 and righthanded hitters batted just .249.

And the veteran knows how to bear down, holding hitters to a .236 average (38-for-161) with runners in scoring position.

Current Angels have just two homers but a .307 average in 215 career at-bats vs. Pettitte. He has trouble with Vladimir Guerrero (.391, 9-for-23), Gary Matthews Jr. (.346, 9-for-26) and Erick Aybar (.438, 7-for-16).
