Game of the day: Tulsa at UTEP
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tulsa Golden Hurricane at UTEP Miners (+7)

The Conference-USA takes moves to prime time when Tulsa (4-2, 2-0) visits UTEP (2-4, 1-1) at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas in a game televised on ESPN Wednesday night.

The Golden Hurricane opened a 6.5-point favorite and the line has moved to -7.5 and now settles at -7 as of Tuesday night.

        Weather update

Clear skies and temperatures in the mid-to-upper 60’s expected at kickoff. Northeast winds around 5 mph.

        Hurricane helper

Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne continues to impress despite being constantly pressured by opposing defenses. Kinne has thrown for seven touchdowns with no interceptions in the past three games and has completed 61.9 percent of his passes this season, good for 1296 yards and 12 TD’s with only two INT’s.

Unlike playing against Tulsa quarterbacks of the past, defenses no longer can sit back in pass coverage because of Kinne's running ability. As a result he has been able to turn potential sacks into positive yardage.

"Our quarterback never flinched. He never wavered. He took care of the ball like I asked him to. He took shot after shot after shot and came back and hit a home run. We came back and had our chances… the guy's a warrior and he's gonna be phenomenal,” Tulsa coach Todd Graham told the media.

Receiver Damaris Johnson leads the team in receptions with 24, good for 428 yards and two TD’s. Trae Johnson has 12 catches, six of which have gone for TD’s.

Hurricane RB Donald Buckram ranks 18th in the country in rushing, averaging 103 yards per game.

The Tulsa offensive line continues to struggle. With an All-Conference OT Tyler Holmes out indefinitely with a broken leg and OG Clint Anderson still not 100 percent, Boise State was able to exploit weaknesses up front. The Golden Hurricane surrendered four sacks Wednesday and has allowed 23 on the season, the third worst in the nation.

        Miner matters

UTEP quarterback Trevor Vittatoe has completed 103 of 193 attempts this season good for 1235 yards with seven TD’s and five INT’s.

Many of Vittatoe's passes against Memphis were on the money but were dropped by the Miners’ receivers. Against Tulsa, the catches need to be made if UTEP wishes to pull off the upset.

Receiver Jeff Moturi continues to be the Miners clutch receiver, catching a pass in 30 straight games.

"We have to focus on the little things, mainly catching the ball. The most obvious thing is, we've got to catch the ball. Catching the ball has been the biggest struggle,” contends UTEP WR Donavon Kemp.

Linebacker Jeremy Springer continues to amaze the UTEP coaches on his switch from quarterback for the 2009 season. Springer ranks second on the team with 45 tackles after switching to defense this season.

        Stand up and be counted

Tulsa has not allowed a rushing touchdown in six games but allowed 193 yards on the ground to Boise State. It was the first game this season an opponent gained more yards rushing than passing against the Hurricane.

The defense held the Broncos to two touchdowns below its season scoring average and did not allow a rushing touchdown for the sixth time this season.

UTEP handed the nation's 12th-ranked Houston Cougars a 58-41 defeat in El Paso three weeks ago and proceeded to lose Memphis on the road a week later.

The Miners have averaged 48 points and 459.5 yards of total offense in its two wins but only 12.8 points and 268.8 yards of total offense in its four losses.

A win here could move the Miners in to a four-way tie atop the CUSA West Division by the end of this week.

        The history book

The host on Wednesday night regular season college football games is 24-12-1 ATS this decade.

UTEP is 2-6 ATS at home versus Tulsa, winning the last two games straight up.

The dog in this series is 4-1 ATS the last five games. The loss occurred last season when the Miners lost 77-35 as 20-point puppies.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: FSU at North Carolina
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida State Seminoles at North Carolina Tar Heels (-2.5, 48)

                  Line movement

The Tar Heels opened as one to 2-point favorites and the line has risen slightly to -2.5 with a -3 out there as well. This is a surprising line move as most money has come in on Florida State, yet the line is going the opposite way.

The total opened at 48 and has remained steady.

                  Injuries

For Florida State, defensive tackle Budd Thacker will not be available after being diagnosed with a Grade 3 sprained MCL. Also, senior linebacker Dekoda Watson may not play due to a groin injury. Those are two significant injuries on an already struggling defense.

The Tar Heels have a sizable number of questionable players on the injury list but none are to any significant players.

                  Weather

It should be a great night in Chapel Hill with mostly cloudy skies and a low of 64 degrees with little to no wind.

                  Bye Bye Bowden?

What happened to Florida State? The Seminoles have lost three straight games and are sitting at 2-4, their worst start since Bobby Bowden took over the program in 1976. The Seminoles have hit hard times in recent years but nothing like this and the top program in Florida a few years back is lucky to be the fourth best right now.

The big story two weeks ago was that the boosters immediately wanted Bowden out and it was almost as though that story took precedence over the actual game. It looks as though headlines got in the way as Florida State dropped its game against Georgia Tech.

We may have seen the end of the legendary coach as he simply is not getting the players he once did and what he does get, he is having trouble coaching. Add to that, the other Florida schools have coaches that players can relate to and that makes a big difference in the recruiting wars.

A report surfaced late Monday night that said offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher’s contract was “done.” About that, Fisher said the report was wrong.

“There's never been a contract presented to me,” Fisher said. “I've never spoken to them about it.”

                  Something’s gotta give

Strength against strength. Power against Power. This will be a great matchup of the Florida State offense against the North Carolina defense.

The Seminoles are 27th in the nation and first in the ACC in total offense with 426 ypg. They are also second in the conference in passing offense and that goes right into the teeth of the Tar Heels defense. They Heels are third in the country in total defense, first in the ACC, but they are also third in passing efficiency defense and that is huge against the Seminoles.

The Tar Heels are not only first in the ACC in total defense, but also first in scoring defense and second in rushing defense which is probably very surprising to the average fan. However, North Carolina brought back nine starters from an above average unit last season so this jump is not overly surprising at all.

                  In the spotlight

North Carolina basketball has been the center of attention for years so appearing on National Television is just something we are accustomed to. How about the football team though? This is actually the first ever Thursday home game for North Carolina and while it says something about the past, it also says something about where head coach Butch Davis has taken this program.

“You get basically a four-hour infomercial that you get a chance to talk about Chapel Hill, talk about the University of North Carolina,” Davis said. “It was an unbelievable cooperation by a lot of people to help make this happen, and we're very grateful they allowed us to do it.”

The Tar Heels have played in the spotlight before, just not at home. Last season they went to Rutgers and put the hammer down on the Scarlett Knights 44-12. Excluding a 28-0 loss at Virginia in 2006, which led to then-coach John Bunting’s resignation, North Carolina has won four of its other five Thursday night contests.

Florida State owns a commanding 14-1-1 advantage over North Carolina, but these teams have not played each other in five years.

                  Offense feeling blue

While the North Carolina defense has been at the top of its game, the offense has been the exact opposite. The Tar Heels knew coming into the season that the offensive line was going to have some struggles but they never would have predicted this.

The Tar Heels are 117th in the nation in total offense, averaging a mere 282.2 ypg and their 22.5 ppg scoring average is good for only 95th. The issues are twofold as they can’t run the ball or pass the ball as they are 102nd and 103rd respectively in those categories.

This inept offense leaves the Tar Heels in too many third and long situations and that has led to them converting only 30 percent on third down which is 112th in the land. Surprisingly, North Carolina is 11th in fourth down conversions as it has made it in five of seven attempts.

So what is a good remedy for this? Facing the Seminoles defense that can’t stop anything, for starters. The Florida State defense has made teams look great. Miami is averaging 390 ypg but had 476 against the Seminoles. Boston College is averaging 301 ypg but had 399 against Florida St. Georgia Tech is averaging 427 ypg but had 532 in the last game. Didn’t Florida St. used to possess the most feared defenses in college football?

                  Bottom line

Based on the line, the Seminoles have the historical edge as they are 8-3-2 ATS in their last 13 games as an underdog while North Carolina is just 7-19 ATS in its last 26 games as a home favorite.

In all of his years at Florida State, Bowden has rarely been involved is high scoring games such as the last one against the Yellow Jackets. He is 6-0 ATS after a home game where both teams score 31 or more points showing just how rare it really is.

As for the total, the ‘Over’ is 11-3 in the Seminoles last 14 road games against a team with a winning home record while the ‘Over’ is 6-2 in the Tar Heels last eight games against a team with a losing record.

Florida State at North Carolina [ESPN | 8:00 PM ET]

Florida State: The resolve of Florida State can be questioned as for the first time the Seminoles are 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Questionable coaching and a cluster injury problem on defense have contributed to the Seminoles being 2-4 for the first time since 1976. Florida State’s defensive line has only three sacks and will be missing tackle Budd Thacker. The Seminoles rank last in the ACC in total defense, run defense and pass defense. Florida State is allowing more than 18 yards per pass completion, worst in the nation. The Seminoles rank 107th in the country in total defense. Thanks to quarterback Christian Ponder, though, Florida State leads the ACC in total offense. Ponder is the top-ranking passer in the conference throwing for 296.8 yards per game. He has a nine-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio. Ponder threw for five touchdowns in Florida State’s last game, a 49-44 home loss to Georgia Tech.

Florida State is 0-4-1 ATS in its past five Thursday games.
The Seminoles average 44 points a game when scoring first this season. When not scoring first, the Seminoles are averaging 15 points.

Defensive tackle Budd Thacker (MCL) is out.
Linebacker Dekoda Watson (groin) is questionable.
Cornerback Patrick Robinson (ankle) is questionable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 23

North Carolina (-3, O/U 49): This matchup is a real contrast in styles because North Carolina has an excellent defense, but its offense struggles. The Tar Heels rate last in the ACC in total offense, averaging 282.2 yards per game. They’ve been ravaged by injuries in their offensive line. The Tar Heels, however, are first in the conference in total defense surrendering 237.7 yards per contest. Defensive end Robert Quinn has 11 tackles for losses, which is the best in the ACC. North Carolina leads the nation in pass defense. The Tar Heels, though, have not gone up a quarterback as good as Ponder. Quarterback T.J. Yates has thrown seven interceptions and six touchdown passes, while completing 60 percent of his throws. It’s the first Thursday night game in UNC history. North Carolina is 1-14-1 lifetime against Florida State, although the last time the two teams met was 2004.

North Carolina is 6-13 ATS when favored.
The Over is 4-1 in North Carolina’s last five home games.

Center Lowell Dyer (shoulder) is out.
Tight end Zach Pianalto (foot) is out.
Offensive tackle Kyle Jolly (leg) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 26 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Side of the Day is in MLB today.

Florida State is 0-3 in ACC, losing by 4-7-5 points, giving up 38.3 ppg; 14 of 22 guys on their two-deep defensive chart are freshmen/sophs, and that youth is catching up with them. North Carolina hasn't played a I-A team in 19 days, losing last two, scoring total of 10 points in losing its two ACC games, 24-7/16-3. Seminoles won seven of last eight games vs Tar Heels, winning last three by combined score of 115-30. Florida St. failed to cover its last five weeknight games. Tar Heels turned ball over nine times in four games against I-A opponents.

Army lost three of last four games, scoring 16 or less points in all four of the games- they're 2-3 as underdog this year. Saturday's games

                        Top games

Home side won 10 of last 12 Georgia Tech-Virginia games; Tech lost last six visits to UVa, despite being favored in three of them. Cavaliers won last three games after 0-3 start, allowing 3-7-9 points; they held Jackets to 156 rushing yards in LY's 24-17 upset win in Atlanta (+14). Home underdogs are 6-1 vs spread in ACC conference play. Tech won its last four games (4-0 vs spread) scoring an average of 35.8 ppg.

Miami is 3-0 at home in '09, beating Ga Tech (33-17), Oklahoma (21-20) 'canes covered two of their last nine as home favorite. Erratic Clemson is 0-2 on road this year, losing both games by FG at Ga Tech (30-27) and Maryland (24-21). Tigers held four of six foes under 50% passing, but are 14 of last 43 on third down- they came off bye last week and waxed Wake Forest, 38-3. Last four Clemson games stayed under the total.

Pitt split its six games with South Florida, visitor winning four of the six. Road team won Daniels' first three starts as USF QB, with Bulls winning at Florida State (17-7), Syracuse (34-20). Pitt is 4-2 as favorite this year; they scored 35-24-24 points in winning last three weeks. Senior QB vs freshman QB, advantage Panthers. Four of the last five Pitt games stayed under the total. Bulls are 1-1 as an underdog this season.

Starting CB for UConn was murdered outside party week ago; this is the first game for Huskies since then, against West Virginia team that they're 0-5 against, losing by average score of 43-15. Mountaineers won four of five vs I-A foes, despite turning ball over 17 times in the five contests. UConn won three of last four games, is 5-1 vs spread in last six, 3-0 as an underdog this season. Big East home teams are 1-7 vs spread in '09.

Boston College has been hideous on road, losing 25-7 at Clemson (+6), 48-14 at Va Tech (+14); they combined to complete 16 of 49 passes for paltry 143 yards in those two games, but they've beaten Notre Dame six times in row, winning three in row and four of last five in South Bend. Irish are 1-4 as favorite this year; only one of their four wins (Nevada) is by more than seven points. Last four BC games went over the total.

Washington plays close games, but let one get away in desert last week, as ASU hit 50-yard pass with 0:13 left when Huskies could have run it and not given ball back to ASU in last 0:25- their last three games came down to last couple minutes. U-Dub is 4-2 as dog this year, 0-5 in last five games of series; home side is 7-2 vs the spread in this bitter rivalry. Oregon won its last five games, scoring 37.2 ppg, covered last four.

Penn State covered five of last six as road favorite, but lost nine of last 10 to Michigan, losing last five visits here, last three all by five points or less. Lions' only previous road game was 35-17 win at crumbling Illinois (-7)- they've outscored I-A foes 96-11 in first half of games this season. Wolverines lost last two vs I-A foes, 26-20 in OT at East Lansing (+2), 30-28 at Iowa (+8). Big 11 home underdogs are 2-4 against the spread.

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Rutgers at Army
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Army Black Knights (+10, 39.5)

                          Friday Knight(s) matchup

The Scarlet Knights have recently dominated the series between these two teams as Rutgers has won nine of the last 11 dating back to 1991 and, more recently, is 4-0 SU having outscored Army 151-30 in their last four meetings dating back to 2002. In the last two years, Rutgers has defeated Army by a combined score of 71-9 while winning the yardage battle 967-371.

Despite the Black Knights struggles against Rutgers, they aren’t a team to be overlooked this year. They’ve already won three games this season and one more would put them at a total they’ve only reached one time since 1997 (2005).

They’ll need an upset Friday night to get it.

                          Getting defensive

Army has quietly posted great defensive statistics as November approaches. The Black Knights are allowing 285 YPG – 171 pass YPG, 114 rush YPG. Last week, Army allowed just 195 yards to Temple. Temple ran the ball 38 times for a meager 80 yards.

After allowing 47 points in the season opener to Cincinnati, Rutgers is allowing just 12 points per game in its last five games. However, most of that has come against below-average opponents and it did allow 24 points in a loss to Pittsburgh last week.

                          Young gun

True Freshmen QB Tom Savage has been impressive as a starter for Rutgers. He is completing 57 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and just one interception. This will be his first night road game in what is sure to be a hostile atmosphere at Michie Stadium.

Savage is 4-1 as a starter after supplanting Dominic Natale in the season opener versus Cincinnati. After facing Howard, Florida International, Maryland, and Texas Southern, he finally got a real test against Pittsburgh last week. Pittsburgh completely shutdown Rutgers running attack (20 attempts, 38 yards) and forced Savage to try and win the game. Savage had a decent game but couldn’t lead the Scarlet Knights to victory.

                          Black Knights running attack

As mentioned above, the Black Knights run the ball an astonishing 80 percent of the time and they do it quite well, averaging 223 yards per game. However, their heavy run attack is mainly a ploy to frustrate the opposing team and it hasn’t given them much overall success on offense this season. They rank 115th in the nation in yards per game and average just 4.4 yards per play and 17 PPG.

Last year against Rutgers they were able to run the football, averaging 4.6 yards per carry and amassing 217 yards, but it didn't translate on the scoreboard as the Cadets lost 30-3.

Rutgers is allowing just 91.5 rushing yards per game, but it did give up 223 to Pittsburgh last week and that allowed the Panthers to control the ball and get the win.

                          Line Movement

The line opened with the Scarlet Knights as heavy 10-point road favorites and has stayed consistently around 10.

The total opened at 40 and dipped slightly to 39.5.

                          Trends

Rutgers is 5-0 ATS in its last five road games but just 2-6 ATS in its last eight games as a road favorite. The Scarlet Knights have had a lot of success against non-conference foes, posting a 12-5-2 ATS record in their last 19 non-conference games. Army is just 7-19-1 ATS in its last 27 games as a home underdog and 1-10 ATS in its last 11 vs. Big East. Rutgers is 6-0 ATS in its last six meetings with Army.

The under is 5-0 in Scarlet Knights’ last five games overall and 13-3-1 in their last 17 games in October. Army has stayed under the total in eight of its last nine home games.

                          Weather

Game-time temperature is forecasted for beautiful football weather with temperatures in the 60’s with no foul weather.

College football Top 25 cheat sheet: Week 8
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No. 1 Florida at Mississippi State (+23, 48.5)

Urban Meyer admits his team is “pressing” with all the high expectations. But it feels like UF got that one scare out of its system last week. Meyer has changed the team’s hand signals this week (with more changes very possible) against former long-time assistant Dan Mullen.

Believe it or not, the Bulldogs have won four in a row against the Gators in Starkville. And they have former UF offensive coordinator Mullen as their head coach, so he should know what’s coming from Tim Tebow and Co. as well as how to attack the defense.

                            Tennessee at No. 2 Alabama (-14, 42.5)

The Vols had a week off following their best effort of the season, a 45-19 win over Georgia. The Vols rank third in the SEC in rushing defense and will focus nearly everything on Mark Ingram.

Alabama has won three of the last four meetings and the last two haven’t been close. The Tide have not allowed a touchdown in the past eight quarters and have 10 picks this year, while UT’s Jonathan Crompton has thrown nine.

                            No. 3 Texas at Missouri (+12.5, 50.5)

Texas has won 16 of 21 all-time meetings and five in a row. The Horns rank No. 1 in the nation against the rush, allowing just 35.8 yards a game. And Missouri has struggled to run the ball.

Mizzou could catch Texas looking ahead to next week’s big game against Oklahoma State. Plus Horns QB Colt McCoy could still be bothered by the thumb he injured last week.

Oregon State at No. 4 Southern Cal (-20.5, 50)

The Beavers have won two of the past three against Pete Carroll’s Trojans. OSU has also won its past seven games when coming off a bye week.

Those two Beaver upsets came in Oregon, as USC has won 21 straight against Oregon State at home. OSU is near the bottom of the country in sacks allowed, while USC leads the nation in sacks.

No. 5 Boise State at Hawaii (+24.5, 57.5)

Boise State should be able to run the ball at will against a defense that has allowed a total of 629 rushing yards the past two weeks.

Hawaii is trying to avoid its first five-game skid in 11 years. The Rainbows are just 2-11 all-time against top-10 teams. But a trip to Hawaii can always be distracting to other teams, and Boise hasn’t looked great the past few weeks.

                            Louisville at No. 6 Cincinnati (-18, 53)

The Cards’ best shot at covering or even an upset comes courtesy an injury to Bearcats starting QB Tony Pike. He’s questionable after having arm surgery this week. UL has won five of the past six in the series.

Cincinnati has won eight straight home games, while the Cardinals have lost seven conference games in a row. The Bearcats’ defense, which leads the nation in tackles for loss and is second in sacks, should dominate.

                            No. 7 TCU at No. 16 BYU (+2.5, 50)

Interestingly, this is the first time these two have met with both ranked in both major polls. TCU is fourth in the nation in total defense, but its past two road games have been won by a combined total of just seven points.

BYU is one of the nation’s best home teams, notwithstanding that FSU loss this year. Since TCU beat BYU in Provo in 2005, the Cougars are 20-2 at home and have won 13 straight home conference games.

No. 8 Iowa at Michigan State (-1, 42.5)

No respect for the Hawkeyes, as they are the only ranked underdogs facing an unranked team on the board. It’s the second year in a row they visit East Lansing, losing 16-13 last year. Iowa has never started a season 8-0.

The Spartans run defense has clamped down in the three-game winning streak, but Iowa also will be the first power running team that MSU has faced since losing to Wisconsin. Sparty hasn’t lost to Iowa at home since 1995.

                            Clemson at No. 9 Miami (-4.5, 43.5)

History says this will be close, since the last two meetings were decided in OT. Not sure that’s too relevant, considering these two haven’t played since 2005. The Tigers rank in the top 20 nationally in scoring defense, total defense and sacks.

The Canes are expecting back star safety Randy Phillips after he missed the past three games. A big concern for UM against a Clemson defense that brings pressure is that QB Jacory Harris has been sacked 12 times in the past three games.

                            Auburn at No. 10 LSU (-7.5, 50)

Auburn has to get QB Chris Todd back on track, or this could be a rout. But AU still should have the better offense in this game, as LSU is No. 112 in the country on that side of the ball.

The home Tigers had a week off to prepare for the Auburn spread offense, which has struggled the past two games as it is. LSU has won two in a row and three of four in this series.

No. 11 Penn State at Michigan (+4.5, 48)

The Nittany Lions snapped a nine-game losing streak in this series with a 29-point home win last year. But they haven’t won in Ann Arbor since 1996.

Wolverines QB Tate Forcier, who almost went to Penn State, is finally healthy again. UM is the Big Ten's top scoring team (37.3 ppg) and rushing offense (235 ypg).

No. 12 Oklahoma State at Baylor (+9.5, 53)

No Dez Bryant again for the Cowboys and it’s likely Kendall Hunter also remains out, although he has been medically cleared. OSU is 12-1 in this series since joining the Big 12.

The Bears haven’t beaten a ranked team in five years (19 losses in row) and their defense has allowed 1,046 yards the past two weeks to Oklahoma and Iowa State - two offenses that are not as good as OSU’s. But the Cowboys might be peeking at next week’s game with Texas.

No. 13 Georgia Tech at Virginia (+5.5, 46.5)

Quarterback Josh Nesbitt has been the biggest reason for Georgia Tech’s recent move up the polls. During the past two games combined, he has rushed for 262 yards and six touchdowns. The Jackets have the best third-down percentage in the ACC.

No one mentions it, but it’s Virginia which technically leads the ACC Coastal. The Cavs, who upset the Jackets last year, aren’t turning the ball over in their three-game win streak. And UVA hasn’t lost at home in this series since 1990.

                            No. 14 Oregon at Washington (+10, 52.5)

Trap game for the Ducks with USC up next? It appears starting QB Jeremiah Masoli, who was hurt Oct. 3 against Washington State, will start Saturday. OU had an extra week to prepare for this one and has won five straight over the Huskies, outscoring them 209-85.

The Huskies have lost three of four as the offense has struggled. But they have won three in a row at home, beating good teams in Idaho, USC and Arizona.

Minnesota at No. 17 Ohio State (-16.5, 44)

The Gophers offense looked horrific last week, rushing for 36 yards in being shut out by Penn State. And the Ohio State unit is also one of the best in the country, especially against the run. The Gophers have never beaten OSU coach Jim Tressel.

Buckeyes QB Terrelle Pryor, who turned the ball over four times last week at Purdue, seems to be going backward, with even Tressel saying his job was safe this week. Pryor is ninth in the Big Ten in pass efficiency. But OSU hasn’t lost consecutive conference games since 2004.

                            SMU at No. 18 Houston (-16.5, 58.5)

The Mustangs can and will throw it as much as Houston. They have to, considering they rank No. 112 in rushing offense. But SMU’s defense is fourth in the nation in takeaways, so that could keep the game close.

The Cougars’ top-ranked offense might not need to punt once against an SMU defense that has been torched this season (102nd in scoring). Look for the over here, as the teams combined for 82 points last year in a Houston six-point win.

South Florida at No. 19 Pittsburgh (-6.5, 48.5)

The Bulls are 3-0 on the road this season, already upsetting one ranked foe in FSU. USF beat Pitt last year in Tampa, but this series is 3-3 all-time. The past two years, South Florida went into a funk following its first loss, which is the case here.

Pitt RB Dion Lewis is one of the top freshman in the country, ranking third in rushing. But USF ranks 18th in total defense. The Panthers are trying to go 7-1 for the first time since 1982.

Air Force at No. 20 Utah (-9.5, 40.5)

Here’s all you need to know about how one-dimensional Air Force is: The Falcons had 267 yards rushing on 69 attempts and just 2 yards on 1-of-5 passing in last week’s win against Wyoming. AFA does lead the nation in turnover margin.

Utah is great against the pass but OK against the run, allowing 130.2 yards per game. In last year’s 30-23 win, the Utes held Air Force to 53 yards rushing and didn't allow a run of more than eight yards.

                            Oklahoma at No. 21 Kansas (7.5, 54.5)

Obviously no Sam Bradford this week for the Sooners, as his collegiate career may be over. The Sooners have won five in a row in this series as the visit Lawrence for the first time since 2001. OU beat KU 45-31 last year.

Kansas hasn’t been good at home against ranked teams under Mark Mangino, winning just two of seven. But the Jayhawks are 27-4 at home in the past five years overall and their offense has scored at least 30 points in the past eight games overall.

Connecticut at No. 22 West Virginia (-7.5, 47)

The Huskies will be playing with heavy hearts in the wake of cornerback Jasper Howard’s stabbing death last weekend. They will wear a JH patch the rest of the year. Even the Mountaineers will wear Howard’s No. 6 on their helmets. WVU is the only Big East team that UConn has never beaten.

WVU has won all five meetings in this series and has outscored the Huskies 101-34 in the past two. WVU QB Jarrett Brown will be a game-time call after suffering a concussion last week.

Vanderbilt at No. 23 South Carolina (-12.5, 38.5)

Vandy is one of the most offensively challenged teams in the nation, having failed to score more than 13 points in any of its five losses. And starting left tackle Thomas Welch will be out this week.

USC leads the series 14-4 but lost in Nashville last season. Leading WR Moe Brown will miss this game with a concussion, but second-leading rusher Jarvis Giles is back from suspension.

                            Texas A&M at No. 24 Texas Tech (-21.5, 70.5)

The Aggies have lost four in a row in this series and haven’t won in Lubbock since 1993. An unranked A&M team has never defeated a ranked Tech team.

The Red Raiders turn back to QB Taylor Potts, the nation’s leading passer earlier this season, after Steven Sheffield, who had wrested the starting job away, was hurt in last week’s win vs. Nebraska.

                            Arkansas at No. 25 Mississippi (-6.5, 53.5)

Is there such a thing as a letdown after a big loss? That’s what might be facing the Hogs after they outplayed Florida last week but came up short. Star RB Michael Smith will likely be a game-time decision.

The Rebs have lost four of five in this series (two in a row at home) but did win last year in Fayetteville. The Rebel defense ranks fourth in the nation in pass defense efficiency and eighth in pass defense.

Rutgers at Army [ESPN2 | 8:00 PM ET]

Rutgers (-10, O/U 39.5): Rutgers has defeated Army five straight times, beating the Black Knights by a combined margin of 71-9 the past two years. Rutgers has covered the past six times in the series, while going 8-2 in its last 10 meetings against Army. The Scarlet Knights are averaging 351.2 yards and 29.3 points per game. Their defense ranks 30th in the country, giving up 314.8 yards per game. Rutgers is stepping down in class after losing to Pittsburgh, 24-17, as a six-point home ‘dog last Friday night. The danger with Rutgers is laying double-digits on the road with a limited offense directed by freshman quarterback Tom Savage. The Scarlet Knights also are in a Big East Division sandwich, having just played conference rival Pittsburgh rival and with a road game next week against Connecticut. Rutgers is 6-2 against the spread as a non-conference favorite of seven or more points.

The Scarlet Knights are 12-5-2 ATS in their last 19 non-conference games.
The Under is 13-3-1 in Rutgers’ last 17 games in October.

Key Injuries - Offensive lineman Caleb Ruch (ankle) is doubtful.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 25

Army: This may be the Black Knights’ toughest game of the season. The Black Knights are 3-4 and need this win if they’re going to keep alive their forlorn goal of making a bowl game for the first time since 1996 after getting upset 27-13 by Temple on the road last week. The Black Knights were penalized 14 times for more than 100 yards in the loss to Temple. Army’s offense has not scored more than one offensive touchdown in four consecutive games. The one-dimensional Black Knights have the nation’s worst passing attack averaging 66 yards through the air per game. Their offensive line has surrendered 27 sacks. Army’s ground attack averages just 2.3 yards per rush. It’s no wonder the Black Knights rank 117th in the country offensively. Army has covered just once the past 11 times it has faced a Big East opponent.

Army is 0-7 ATS at home versus a team with a winning road record.

                              Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 14 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
