    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, October 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Chargers host the Broncos in the primetime matchup, and the baseball playoffs continue in Philly and Los Angeles.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Monday Night Football has Denver at San Diego this week, with the Broncos (5-0 SU, 5-0 ATS) looking to extend their season-opening win streak to six games. The Broncos made a statement with a 20-17 home win over the Patriots last time out, as Kyle Orton went 35-of-48 for 330 yards passing with two touchdowns (and one interception). Knowshon Moreno rushed for 88 yards on his 21 carries.

The Chargers (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) fell 38-28 to the Steelers in their last game two weeks ago. Philip Rivers completed 21-of-36 pass attempts for 254 yards in that loss, with touchdown strikes to Antonio Gates (two) and Chris Chambers. LaDainian Tomlinson ran for just 15 yards on seven carries against Pittsburgh. San Diego is a 3.5-point home favorite for Monday night, with the total set at 44.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Yankees and Angels will play Game 3 of the ALCS in Los Angeles on Monday, with Andy Pettitte taking on Jered Weaver. Lefthander Pettitte won his ALDS start against the Twins last time out, surrendering just one earned run on three hits over 6 1-3 innings and fanning seven. Righthander Weaver also grabbed a victory in the last round of the playoffs, holding the Red Sox to one earned run on two hits over 7 1-3 innings. Weaver fanned seven and walked two.

Meanwhile, it's Game 4 of the NLCS between the Dodgers and Phillies on Monday in Philadelphia, with Randy Wolf going up against Joe Blanton. Lefthander Wolf took a no-decision in his start for the Dodgers against the Cardinals last round, allowing two earned runs on six hits over 3 2-3 innings of work. Righthander Blanton took the mound twice for the Phillies against the Rockies in the NLDS, surrendering two earned run on four hits in 3 2-3 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are three National Hockey League games on the Monday schedule, with Los Angeles at Dallas, Vancouver at Edmonton, and San Jose at the Rangers. The Sharks are coming off a 4-1 road win over the Islanders on Saturday night, with Joe Thornton picking up a goal and two assists in the contest. The Rangers continued to roll in their last contest, as they knocked off the Maple Leafs 4-1 on the road. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves in that victory.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Monday, October 19

      Meaningful Monday night trends

On Monday Night Football, the Denver Broncos (5-0 straight up, 5-0 against the spread) visit the San Diego Chargers (2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS). The home team clearly is more desperate and is giving 3.5 points. The Chargers have won five of the last six meetings and are 5-1 vs. the spread. The teams also have played to the over in five of the last six meetings.

      Melting the ice

New Jersey Devils coach Jacques Lemaire changed his top lines in Saturday's 2-0 win over Carolina. He broke up the top line of Zach Parise, Travis Zajac and Jamie Langenbrunner, putting Zajac on a line with Niclas Bergfors and Matt Halischuk, and Parise and Langenbrunner with Rob Niedermayer. Lemaire also split up his defensive tandems, putting Paul Martin with Bryce Salvador and Johnny Oyuda - who had been with Martin - with Andy Greene. The Devils don't play until visiting the New York Rangers on Thursday, so the units will have time to practice together.

      No ordinary Joe

There are a couple of nice converging trends in Game Four of the NLCS. The Phillies are 15-5-2 against the over in their last 22 games overall and 6-2-1 against the over in the last nine starts made by Joe Blanton, who is making his first start of the postseason. Bookmakers had yet to set a total.

      A mountain to climb

West Virginia quarterback Jarrett Brown did not practice Sunday and is day-to-day after taking a head shot to the helmet on the opening series vs. Marshall on Saturday. Coach Bill Stewart said he won't know until later this week whether Brown or backup Geno Smith will start Saturday vs. Connecticut. The Mountaineers (5-1) are 4-0 at home but just 1-2 against the spread.

      Catch phrases

The Angels were eighth in the major leagues in fielding during the regular season and third among playoff teams. But in the first two games of the ALCS vs. the New York Yankees, they have committed five errors leading to three unearned runs. In the postseason, the Angels have six errors and a .970 fielding percentage, both the worst of the eight playoff teams. Los Angeles is -131 with a total of 8.5 in Game Three.

      Something special

The New York Rangers have won seven straight games, and special teams have been a huge reason. After going 0-for-9 on the power play in their first two games, the Rangers are 10-of-29 in their last six matches. And the penalty kill has been even better, burning 36-of-40 shorthanded situations during the streak. New York is -114 vs. San Jose with a total of 5.5.

      Notable quotable

"I explained that this is not a regular game and the kids are watching and (it's) important that there will be peace and forgive him. If you forgive him, I can speak to the children and say, 'You also forgive. If you have a fight, you forgive.' But (the referee) says this is the law, that you must obey."

-- Rabbi Yitchak Dovid Grossman, who intervened to try to prevent the ejection of Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Pini Gershon during an exhibition loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Gershon received two technical fouls but initially refused to leave the court before finally departing.

        Six-pack for Monday

-- Watched NFL games Sunday at Palazzo sports book; pretty nice setup they have. Its fairly easy to get spoiled out here.

-- I mean, after the late afternoon games are over, its still only 4:30 or so here, so lot of time to do other stuff. Like watch the night game.

-- You can smoke in casinos, which is fine, just that I'm not used to it, since it is illegal to smoke indoors in public places in New York.

-- Lot of walking in Vegas; the signs in front of the casinos are so big, places appear closer than they actually are. Best move if you're going to explore is the $7 day pass for the city bus. They have double decker buses and there's a lot of them. In the heat of the afternoon, walking stops being fun fairly quickly.

-- How happy was I to be in the desert when I saw the Titans-Pats playing in the snow in Foxboro? I won't be that happy Tuesday.

-- Monday is our last day here before flying home Tuesday; couple of baseball games and the Monday night football game to look forward to Monday. You can bet football at the Planet Hollywood sports book on Mondays at -105 instead of -110.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

Lot of stuff to get to in Week 6, so we'll give you something related to all 13 games on Sunday's card.......

        13) New Orleans Saints look like the best team right now; they hung 493 yards on the Giants, led 34-17 at the half. Only 13 of the 70 plays they ran came on 3rd down, and they converted seven of the 13.

        12) Hideous, horrible, putrid performance by the Titans in the snow at Foxboro, losing 59-0 in a game that wasn't that close. On a day when Brady threw five TDs in one quarter, Collins/Young combined to go 2 of 14 for minus-7 yards passing, and their defense was worse than that.

        11) Bears lost 21-14 in Atanta Sunday night; they had ball four times in Atlanta's red zone, and scored only once, losing a fumble, an INT and losing ball on downs once. Cutler didn't earn his money in that game.

        10) I picked the Seahawks -3; game was 14-0 Arizona before Hasselbeck got on the field, and it didn't improve once he did. Seattle had only seven first downs the whole game (they were 0-11 on 3rd down). Arizona had a 21-yard edge in field position because Seattle didn't move the chains.

        9) Redskins are first NFL team ever whose first six opponents had zero wins at the time Skins played them; they're 2-4, Jim Zorn is going to be fired- they've already taken play calling away from him. Washington last won the NFC East ten years ago; maybe its not the coach.

        8) I am going to look further into this with people who will have an idea of the answers, but how do cold weather teams measure whether players who've never played in cold weather will fare? Especially players who will handle the ball-- take the Jets. They've invested millions and years in Mark Sanchez, but Sunday was the first time he played in temps that were colder than 55, and he was awful. This could be a disaster, seeing as at least half the season in New Jersey is played in cold weather.

        7) If you took Steelers and gave the points, you got hosed; Cribbs ran a kick back for TD when it was 14-0 Steelers, then Pitt fumbled on the 24 and 25 of the Browns in the second half, and didn't cover by half-point.

        6) Tampa Bay trailed 21-7, then ran kick back for TD, got a defensive TD to tie game 21-all, but they still lost. Carolina ran ball for 267 yards, were 8-14 on third down- they had 15-yard edge in field position.

        5) When a team like the Bucs scores two unusual TDs and loses, or the Rams get three takeaways and still lose, those are ominous clouds for both teams. Rams have now lost 16 in a row, Tampa Bay 10. Both try very hard, they compete, but they don't have enough good players.

        4) Raiders 13, Eagles 9. People bet on this stuff for a living? JaMarcus Russell was 17-28/209 passing against Philly. Go figure.

        3) Packers waxed Detroit 26-0 and it could have been worse; Green Bay had 13 penalties for 130 yards, scored only one TD in five trips inside the Detroit red zone. Lions were 0-10 on 3rd down, had only 149 yds.

        2) Bengals, Seahawks, Jets were all home favorites that didn't score in the second half, much less win or cover. If you're going to be mouthy as a team, you can't lose to Buffalo at home. Just a thought.

        1) Minnesota led Ravens 14-3 at half; but Baltimore scored three TDs in 4:58 span of 4th quarter, then got in position to try winning FG at end, but it missed, as Favre's magical season continues. If I'm a Jet fan, I'm wondering if the man threw games last year so the Jets would give him his release and he could play for the Vikings.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels (-131, 8.5)

There’s no way a team can lose like Los Angeles did Saturday night and not feel dejected. The Halos wrestled a late one-run lead in extra innings but couldn’t hold on. The Yanks are now up 2-0 in the series and hold all the momentum.

Angels outfielder Torii Hunter couldn’t hold back his frustration after the game, especially seeing how his side stranded 16 and went 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

“Deflating,” Hunter told reporters. “That’s very uncharacteristic of this team. That is not our baseball. We’re not playing up to our capabilities right now.”

Vladimir Guerrero is absolutely killing the Angels. His bat used to be the only threat in the lineup, but now he’s just a strikeout waiting to happen.

Los Angeles prides itself on being patient at the plate, but all that work is ruined as soon as Guerrero comes to the dish with no intention of taking one pitch. His shortcomings were an eyesore in Game 2, striking out twice with the bases loaded.

Expect the Yanks to win this game on their way to a tidy four-game sweep.

                  Pick: Yankees

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) vs. Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels)

                    Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA)

There’s never been a pitcher with more postseason experience than this guy. The 37-year-old became the Majors all-time leader in playoff innings pitched and tied John Smoltz for most career postseason wins following his masterful start against the Twins in the ALDS last week.

Pettitte is 15-8 in his 36 playoff starts.

The veteran lefty struck out seven and allowed just one run in 6 1-3 innings pitched versus the Twins.

Pettitte didn’t look anything like the pitcher who was pulled in the fifth inning in his last regular season start. The under is now 4-0 in Pettitte last four starts.

                    Jered Weaver (16-8, 3.63)

Weaver was making spitballs in high school English class when Pettitte pitched his first postseason game. And while Weaver is a decade younger than Pettitte, he’s no wide-eyed puppy when it comes to pitching in pressure-packed situations.

He owns a 2-1 record with a 1.88 ERA in postseason 14.1 innings. The Halos have been money in the bank with Weaver on the bump this season. Dating back to May 22, Los Angeles is 18-8 when Jered takes the ball.

The under is paying out well with this hurler too. It is 6-0-2 in Weaver’s last eight starts, including last week’s 4-1 win over the Red Sox in the ALDS.

Dodgers: Not only do the Dodgers have to adjust to playing in hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park, but also another night of brisk 40-degree weather. Wolf was hot during the stretch, though, going 6-1. Wolf was 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA versus the Phillies this season. Lifetime at Citizens Bank Park, Wolf is 9-7 with a 4.30 ERA. Wolf had the fifth-lowest road ERA in the league this season at 2.78.

Los Angeles Kings at Dallas Stars (-145, 5.5)

The NHL schedule makers didn’t do the Kings any favors when they put together the October calendar. Los Angeles plays its six straight road game on Monday and the club won’t see a home stand longer than two games until the beginning of December.

The Kings started the road trip out well with wins over the Blues and Islanders, but the success stopped immediately against the NHL’s superior teams. The West Coast club is now 0-3 straight up and on the puckline in its last three games following Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Blue Jackets.

For the Kings to get back on track they’ll have to improve their special teams play. The squad has just one goal with the man advantage in their last three games and also owes the second worst penalty kill in the NHL.

                            Pick: Stars

San Jose Sharks at New York Rangers (-120, 5.5)

Something’s gotta give when these two sides meet.

The Rangers are a sparkling 7-1-0 to start the season but after Saturday’s win over the Leafs, all New York coach John Tortorella could talk about was the frequency his starting goaltending is getting run over by opposing forwards.

“You know, I asked the referees between periods what they want us to do if it’s not going to be called or enforced,” Tortorella told the New York Post. “As usual, they didn’t have much to say.”

“But either something has to be done [by the league] or we’ll have to take care of it our way… or a different way, because the way guys are coming in on Hank now is ridiculous.”

The Blue Shirts don’t have a reliable option behind starting netminder Henrik Lundqvist, so it’s understandable why Tortorella is so protective of his All-Star.

On the flip side, San Jose shuffled its lines Saturday against the Isle with rookie Ryan Versce landing a spot on the top line with Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. The 27-year-old winger won the spot because of his relentless energy.

Expect some fireworks if he comes into Lundqvist’s crease one too many times.

                            Pick: Over
