Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

      13) Somewhere in this town are people who bet on both the Angels and the Washington Huskies; those people are probably drowning out their sorrows as I type this. Brutal, brutal beat for Washington, which had the ball 3rd-and-1 on their own 25 with 0:22 left, tried a long pass, had to punt, then gave up a 50-yard TD pass with 0:05 left. At +6, this was the worst beat we've seen in a long time.

      12) Last week the Huskies won because Arizona's coach screwed up; the shoe was on the other foot tonight. Washington has a better kicker and a better QB than Arizona State- they should have gone to OT willingly.

      11) If you had Troy (-10), you got backdoored on last play of the game, but that stuff happens. The Washington loss was unfathomable, as not only did they give up a 50-yard pass with 0:05 left, the guy was totally by himself on camera when the caught the ball. Where was the defense?

      10) Oklahoma-Texas game was like the first game of season, when the defenses are so far ahead of the offenses. Colt McCoy looks like a little kid out there. Bradford's injury probably means he'll be back in Norman next season, since his shoulder injury will screw up his draft position. A very fierce battle in Dallas; once again, Bob Stoops loses a big game.

      9) Then there's Charlie Weis, who had lot of intangibles on his side this week, with a vulnerable USC team visiting, had the refs chipping in at the end (must have been the same refs as the Raven-Patriot game couple weeks ago), but USC was mentally tough and won 34-27. The sad truth is that Charlie the Tactician is now 0-5 against the Trojans, and Barkley passed for 380 yards on the road against his team. A freshman QB.

      8) NC State's defense is incredibly bad. Boston College ran ball for 293 yards in an amazingly easy 52-20 win. Very disappointed in the Pack.

      7) When Rich Rodriguez got the Michigan job, he lost a spirited battle with Ohio State for QB Terrelle Pryor, who he deemed ideal to run his spread offense. 18 months later, Rodriguez is better off with Forcier as his QB. Pryor just hasn't developed as a passer yet.

      6) Speaking of Rodriguez, why the hell is Michigan playing Delaware State??? Not even Delaware, but Delaware freakin' State? Ridiculous.

      5) Temple Owls won their last four games, they're 3-0 in the MAC and two wins away from being bowl eligible. Good for them and the Vandals of Idaho who are 6-1 and bowl eligible after winning total of three times the last two seasons. As always, winning is better than losing.

      4) Cal Bears took the bus 370+ miles to Pasadena to play UCLA in a cost-cutting measure; they looked like worldbeaters in first half, with a 35-20 halftime lead. Bears ran the ball for 289 yards, routed the Bruins 45-26 then got back on the bus. Tough day for Rick Neuheisel.

      3) Georgia Tech and Air Force both won, despite each completing just one pass; Tech's pass was good for 51 yards, Air Force's for two.

      2) Kansas damn near pulled off miracle comeback in Boulder, but lost at Colorado 34-30, as a pass on last play of game slipped off the fingers of a Jayhawk receiver. Kansas QB Reesing plays a lot like Doug Flutie did.

      1) We have to start talking about Arizona QB Nick Foles, who started his third game for Arizona Saturday, a 43-38 win over Stanford. So far in his career, Foles won 37-32 at Oregon State (trailed 17-14 at half) lost 36-33 at Washington on a fluky pick-6 with under 3:00 left, then beat Stanford 43-38 in a game Wildcats trailed 28-20 at the half.

Foles was 40-52/416 passing in his first home start, coming off a game he lost with a late INT. I'm thinking he's going to be a star, maybe even good enough to lead Arizona to its first appearance in Rose Bowl game.
