    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, October 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Oklahoma takes on Texas, USC meets Notre Dame, and the Yankees host the Angels in the second game of the ALCS.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

No. 20 Oklahoma will take on No. 3 Texas at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday for the annual Red River Rivalry. The Sooners (3-2 SU, 1-3 ATS) are coming off an easy 33-7 win over Baylor last time out, with Sam Bradford throwing for 389 yards and a TD in his return to action. The Longhorns (5-0 SU, 1-4 ATS) had no trouble with Colorado last game, winning 38-14 behind 265 yards and a score from Colt McCoy. Texas is pegged as the 3-point favorite for Saturday's matchup.

Meanwhile, No. 6 USC will be at Notre Dame on Saturday to take on the No. 25 Fighting Irish. The Trojans (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) thumped California 30-3 in their last contest, as Joe McKnight ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns. The Irish (4-1 SU, 1-4 ATS) got past Washington 37-30 in their last game, as Jimmy Clausen continued his Heisman campaign with 422 yards passing and two TDs. The oddsmakers have sided with the Trojans for Saturday, favoring them by 10 points.

There are two other ranked matchups on the Saturday college football slate, with No. 4 Virginia Tech (-3) at No. 19 Georgia Tech, and No. 22 South Carolina at No. 2 Alabama (-17.5). As well, it'll be No. 7 Ohio State (-13.5) at Purdue, No. 9 Miami (-14) at UCF, and Arkansas at No. 1 Florida (-24.5). The top-ranked Gators (5-0 SU, 2-2 ATS) slipped past LSU 13-3 last week. Tim Tebow went 11-of-16 for 134 yards passing and a TD, while rushing for 38 yards in that victory.

As well, there is one Canadian Football League game on the Saturday schedule, with Saskatchewan at Calgary. The Stampeders are a 3.5-point home favorite.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It's Game 2 of the American League Championship Series between the Angels and Yankees in New York on Saturday night, with Joe Saunders taking on A.J. Burnett. Lefthander Saunders has yet to pitch in the playoffs this year, but he picked up the win in seven of his final eight regular-season outings. Righthander Burnett took a no-decision in his start against the Twins in the ALDS, surrendering just one run on three hits over his six innings of work in that outing.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

A busy night around the National Hockey League on Saturday has 13 games on tap, including Tampa Bay at the defending-champion Penguins. The Lightning will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to the Senators on Thursday night, as they fell 7-1 on the road. Mike Smith allowed all seven goals on 35 shots. The Penguins improved their record to 6-1-0 on the season by beating the Hurricanes 3-2 last game in a shootout. Evgeni Malkin had two points.

Also on the ice on Saturday: Atlanta at Buffalo, Nashville at Washington, Los Angeles at Columbus, San Jose at the Islanders, Carolina at New Jersey, Ottawa at Montreal, Colorado at Detroit, Dallas at Chicago, Boston at Phoenix, Minnesota at Vancouver, St. Louis at Anaheim, and the Rangers at Toronto. New York beat up on the winless Maple Leafs 7-2 on Monday night, with Sean Avery and Daniel Girardi each scoring twice. Henrik Lundqvist saved 27 Toronto shots.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series takes the track at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Saturday night for the NASCAR Banking 500. Pole sitter and points leader Jimmie Johnson is listed as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to visit victory lane on Saturday night, with Jeff Gordon (11/2), Juan Montoya (8/1), and Mark Martin (8/1) following him on that odds list. Tony Stewart is next at 11/1 while David Reutimann, who won a rain-shortened race at Lowe's in May, is set at 28/1 odds.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, October 17

      Cold-cocked

The South Carolina Gamecocks aren’t making their game at No. 2 Alabama on Saturday any easier. South Carolina announced on Thursday that freshman running back and second-leading rusher Jarvis Giles (245 yards) had been suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. The squad also will be without starting offensive lineman Heath Batchelor, who reportedly left the team this week. South Carolina is listed at +17.5 with an over/under of 44.

      Hawkeye Nation

So remind us again why the Badgers, coming off a 31-13 loss at Ohio State, are 2.5-point favorites over the undefeated Hawkeyes? Iowa is 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS in the previous seven meetings with two of the wins coming in Madison, and a 38-16 victory last season.

      Hog wild

The Arkansas Razorbacks might be very shorthanded against the Gators on Saturday afternoon. Leading rusher Michael Smith is a game-time decision for the high-scoring hogs with an injured hamstring. For Arkansas to have any chance to upset the defending national champions, it must get a huge game from Smith. The Razorbacks are + 24.5 with an over/under of 57.5.

      Left for dead

The Redskins now have a gaping hole on their offensive line. Left tackle Chris Samuels will miss Sunday’s game against Kansas City and could miss the rest of the season after suffering a stinger last week. Without Samuels, the Redskins will rely on Stephon Heyer, an undrafted, third-year player out of Maryland to protect the blind side of erratic quarterback Jason Campbell. The Redskins are 6.5-point favorites with an over/under of 37.

      Steel city

Can the Pittsburgh defense get any better? It should with the addition of Troy Polamalu, who missed the past four weeks with a torn ligament. The squad is ranked fourth in the league in total defense, but has yielded at least 20 points in each of the past three games. Polamalu’s return is bad news for Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, who finished with just 23 yards passing in a 6-3 win over the Bills last week. The Steelers are listed at – 14 with an over/under of 38.

      Special talent

Ottawa forward Milan Michalek flashed his extreme talent in a 7-1 win over Tampa Bay. Michalek recorded the hat trick, including two short-handed goals, to give him four on the season. And Ottawa is finding ways to get Michalek on the ice, as he also has a power play goal this year. Look for him to keep his hot streak going against Montreal on Saturday. The Senators are +115 with an over/under of 5.5.

      Home on the range

The best offensive team isn’t in Pittsburgh or Washington. Try New York. The Rangers have scored an NHL-best 28 goals this season, propelling them to a 6-1-0 start. That’s bad news for the Maple Leafs, which have given up an NHL-high 28 goals and are winless through six games, including a 7-2 loss the Rangers earlier this week. The Rangers are listed at -132 with an over/under of 6.

Saskatchewan Roughriders vs Calgary Stampeders (-4, 54)

As good as Henry Burris is, and despite the fact he still is one of the best quarterbacks the CFL, his offensive line doesn’t give him enough time to throw the ball and his receivers can’t seem to free themselves. No one should be surprised that tempers flared up in the locker room after an awful loss in Montreal, where slotback Teyo Johnson and cornerback Brandon Browner almost exchanged blows. The Roughriders are coming to Calgary with ambitions of taking first place in the West but they will have to face the Stampeders without tight end Weston Dressler, who nurses a leg injury. Dressler is an awesome playmaker and his loss will undoubtedly be felt. At home, with the support of their zealous and intimidating fans, Calgary gets a perfect occasion to reaffirm their western supremacy.

                Pick: Calgary -4

                Sunday, October 18

Hamilton Tiger Cats vs Montreal Alouettes (-13, 48)

The digestion of the Thanksgiving turkey must have not been easy for the Tiger Cats players after that brutal loss to the Blue Bombers. Of course, the Tiger Cats did attempt a valiant comeback but still, the screening of the game film was undoubtedly unpleasant for many Hamilton players. The Tiger Cats have lost five of their last six games. End result: Kevin Glenn is now the number one QB ahead of Quinton Porter, whose two fumbles on Monday took away whatever patience was left in head coach Marcel Bellefeuille. Porter, by himself, was responsible of nine turnovers in the last four games.

Everything is peachy with the Alouettes and the perspective of a 16-2 season is now a topic of conversation in Montreal. Only the 1989 Eskimos managed to have such a regular season record. Some observers fear a letdown, especially since the Alouettes, with a guaranteed home game in the East Final on November 22, will play their last four regular season games against teams with loosing records. But in the Als dressing room, players vow it won’t be the case and they intend not only to win all four games but all six games, including of course the Grey Cup final.

                Pick: Montreal -13

B.C. Lions vs Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-1.5, 50.5)

Here are two teams that have been through a chaotic journey since the start of the season but that have seemingly got back on track. The Lions defence is once again threatening to opposing quarterbacks while Bombers QB Michael Bishop has found his timing, leading is team to three straight victories. The only other team in the CFL that can boast winning at least three in a row at this point are the Montreal Alouettes.

With a QB on the top of his game, the Blue Bombers have regained their status of a very menacing team. Let’s not forget that their cornerback and punt/kickoff returner Jovon Johnson as well as receiver Adarius Bowman both have been among the CFL stars of the week. Plus, running back Fred Reid is now leading again the CFL with 1135 yards rushing, eight more than his counterpart for the Lions, Martel Mallett. The last time these two teams clashed, the Bombers won convincingly by the score of 37-10 at B.C. Place.

                Pick: Winnipeg -1.5

                (Last Week 3-1, season 32-24)

                  This Day in Baseball

On October 17 in Baseball History...

1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hit a home run in the ninth inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1-1. Baker was tagged with the nickname "Home Run" for his exploits.

1960 - The National League formally awarded franchises to the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc., headed by Joan Payson, and a Houston group headed by Judge Roy Hofheinz, Craig Cullinan, and R.E. Smith.

1976 - On a cold Sunday night, the Reds gang up on Catfish Hunter for three runs, but the Yankees battle back to tie it up. With two outs in the ninth inning, Yanks shortstop Fred Stanley throws Griffey's easy grounder into the dugout. A walk and a Tony Perez single follow and the Yanks lose the second World Series game 4-3.

1978 - The Yanks win their fourth straight game, 7-2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

1979 - Willie Stargell's two-run homer gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.

1982 - Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 win in Game Five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the opening game of the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.

1989 - Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco, an earthquake hit the Bay area. The game was postponed and the Series resumed 11 days later.

1990 - In the first extra-inning World Series game since 1986, the underdog Reds beat the A's 5-4 in ten innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the Series. Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher goes 4-for-4 to run his consecutive hit streak to seven, tying Thurman Munson's World Series record.

1991 - Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the first inning of Game Seven is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh.

1992 - Tom Glavine goes the distance to give the Braves a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game One of the World Series.

1993 - A five-run uprising in the third pushes the Phillies to a 6-4 win over Toronto in Game Two. Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.

1995 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in Game 6 of the American League championship series, winning their first pennant since 1954.

1996 - The Atlanta Braves had the biggest blowout in postseason history, beating St. Louis, 15-0, in Game 7 of the NL championship series to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Cardinals became the only club to blow a 3-1 edge three times in the postseason.

Payoff pitch: Today’s best mound matchup
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) vs. A.J. Burnett (New York Yankees)

                    Joe Saunders (16-7, 4.60 ERA)

Joe Saunders doesn't strike out a lot of guys. And he's not a workhorse. And he gives up a lot of homers. And his ERA looks like a field-goal percentage.

But over the last two seasons, the only American League pitcher with more wins than Saunders' 33 is Roy Halladay, who is in the Cy Young conversation just about every year.

The Angels were 20-11 in the 31 games started by Saunders, who was 10th in starter money at $771. This will be the first time he gets the ball since the final day of the season and will be looking to pick up where he left off.

Over his last eight starts, Saunders was 7-0 with a 2.55 ERA. One of those was a 5-2 win over the Yankees on Sept. 21 in which he allowed two runs - both on homers - and seven hits in 8 1-3 innings, his second-longest outing of the season.

Saunders has made only one career postseason appearance, failing to last five innings a year ago vs. Boston in a game eventually won by Los Angeles in 12 innings. Yankee Stadium is a huge stage, and this is his first time on it since Aug. 6, 2006.

Although he is a southpaw, lefthanded hitters batted .257 with five homers in 191 at-bats vs. Saunders this season. The numbers jump to .287 with 24 homers in 534 at-bats vs. righthanders.

Saunders will have to be careful when facing Alex Rodriguez, who is 7-for-14 with two doubles and two homers against him, and Derek Jeter, who is 7-for-15 with a homer and two RBI.

                    A.J. Burnett (13-9, 4.04 ERA)

You can almost certainly anticipate two things from A.J. Burnett for the rest of the postseason: He will strike out a lot of batters, and he will need help from the bullpen.

Burnett had 195 strikeouts in 207 innings this season and 66 in 59 1-3 frames over his last 10 starts, a time when most pitchers are showing signs of fatigue. However, in that same stretch Burnett pitched seven innings just twice and less than six innings four times.

The righthander was sharp in his first career postseason start and will be on six days rest for just the second time this season. On June 27, he overwhelmed the New York Mets, allowing one hit with 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings.

Burnett limited lefthanded hitters to a .217 average and 11 homers in 420 at-bats. Righthanded hitters were much better at .282 with 14 homers in 362 at-bats.

In two starts vs. Anaheim this season, Burnett was 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA, fanning 16 in 12 2-3 innings. In his career, he has limited Torii Hunter and Vladimir Guerrero to a combined 11-for-65 with 18 strikeouts. He has to be careful with Bobby Abreu, who sports a .313 (20-for-64) average with 11 walks and 12 RBI vs. Burnett.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-180, 8.5)

During the regular season, the Yankees led the major leagues in runs (915), homers (244), on-base percentage (.362) and slugging percentage (.478). They were second in batting average (.283) and third in doubles (325).

And they need that offensive attack to resurface against the Angels.

In the ALDS vs. Minnesota, the Yankees batted .225. Only the Red Sox were worse, and the offense of the Bronx Bombers was carried by the left side of the infield.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez and shortstop Derek Jeter hit a combined .429 (9-for-21) with five extra-base hits, eight runs and eight RBI. The rest of the roster hit a combined .173 (14-for-81), four extra-base hits, seven runs and seven RBI.

Rodriguez and Jeter have had the most success of any Yankees vs. Angels starter Joe Saunders, who should get some help from winds blowing in from left field at up to 15 miles per hour.

And the rest of the forecast certainly isn't going to heat up the Yankees' bats. Temperatures will be in the 40s, with a steady rain.

The Yankees batted .272 with 15 homers and 55 RBI in 10 games vs. the Angels this season.

                            Pick: Los Angeles
