    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, October 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels begin the ALCS in New York, the Dodgers host the Phillies again, and Pittsburgh tries to get a win at Rutgers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Friday night's college football matchup has Pittsburgh at Rutgers, with the Panthers pegged as 3.5-point road favorites (and the total at 48 points). Pittsburgh (5-1 straight-up, 3-2 against-the-spread) slipped past Connecticut 24-21 last time out, with Bill Stull throwing for 268 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Rutgers (4-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) blasted Texas Southern 42-0 in their last game. De'Antwan Williams rushed for 132 yards and a score in that win for the Knights.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday, with Edmonton (6-8 SU, 5-9 ATS) on the road to take on Toronto (3-11 SU, 5-8-1 ATS). The Eskimos are listed as 4-point road favorites, with the total at 51 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League Championship Series opens up in the Bronx on Friday night, with CC Sabathia and the Yankees hosting John Lackey and the Angels. Lefthander Sabathia picked up a win in his ALDS outing against the Twins, holding the opposition to two runs (one earned) on eight hits over his 6 2-3 innings of work - and fanning eight. Righthander Lackey beat the Red Sox last round, tossing 7 1-3 scoreless innings while giving up four hits and fanning four.

As well, it's Game 2 of the NLCS on Friday afternoon, with the Dodgers again hosting the Phillies. Los Angeles will go with Vicente Padilla in the Game 2 matchup. Righthander Padilla blanked the Cardinals over seven innings in his NLDS outing, giving up just four hits and striking out four batters. Pedro Martinez is penciled in to start for Philadelphia on Friday. Righthander Martinez has yet to pitch in the playoffs, but the Phillies went 8-1 in his nine regular-season outings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the ice on Friday night, with Atlanta at New Jersey, the Islanders at Buffalo, Philadelphia at Florida, Boston at Dallas, Minnesota at Edmonton, and Vancouver at Calgary. The Canucks beat the Stars 4-3 in their last game, but they've lost forward Daniel Sedin and defenseman Sami Salo indefinitely due to injuries. The Flames were edged 2-1 by the Blue Jackets last time out; Curtis Glencross had the lone goal for Calgary in that loss.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Friday, October 16

      Let it rain

The forecast for the start of the ALCS is not a pretty. It is possible that heavy rain and cold winds could alter how both teams approach playing in New York.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 40 percent chance of rain for Friday and a 50 percent chance of a shower for Game 2 Saturday with temperatures expected to be in the low 40s.

The Yankees planned to go with a three-man rotation, with 19-game winner C.C. Sabathia starting Game 1 followed by A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte. However, inclement weather could throw a wrench into those plans.

A potential rainout would force Yankees' skipper Joe Girardi to go with a four man rotation, which means either Joba Chamberlain or Chad Gaudin are likely to get the call. If Chamberlain were to start, New York would lose his arm as a bridge to closer Mariano Rivera. Gaudin was 6-10 with a 4.84 ERA in 25 starts this season.

"From what I understand, it's going to be chilly (Friday) night," Girardi said. "You get different forecasts all the time. ... Only Mother Nature knows that, so you kind of cross that bridge when you have to."

A rain-soaked field could be an advantage for the Bronx Bombers who are more used to dealing with nasty weather than their Californian counterparts.

"This is Yankee weather," catcher Jorge Posada said. "We've been playing like this all year. It seems like every time we come home, it's been raining. We deal with it and they have to deal with it."

The Angles were third in the majors with 148 stolen bases this season and slick base paths could change their game plan and take away one of their major assets for games played in New York.

"I don't know," Posada said. "It's tough to run with a wet field. We'll see."

      No running on Rutgers

Since their season-opening loss to Cincinnati, the Scarlet Knights' defense has not allowed their opponents any wiggle room on the gridiron. Their suffocating defense is allowing only an average of 65.2 yards per game after holding their past three opponents to a combined 45 rushing yards.

"Stopping the run is what we do here at Rutgers." coach Greg Schiano said.

They will have their work cut out for them against a Pitt team that averages over 166 yards per game on the ground.

A blitz-heavy defense has Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt concerned.

"You have to handle it physically, but they force you to handle it mentally, too," He told reporters."You have to be sharp. Very seldom are they sitting still and just saying, 'Here's where we are at, come and block us.' "

Wannstedt has a right to be worried, he hasn't be able to beat Rutgers since taking over the Panthers in 2005. Four consecutive losses, including last year's 54-34 debacle at Heinze Field, have his players out for revenge.

"There's definitely motivation for us in this game," Pitt linebacker Adam Gunn said. "They came in here and really put it on us. We know we have to play a lot better than we did last year, and we have to prove it."

Oddsmakers have Rutgers listed as 5.5-point underdogs with the total set at 45 ½.

      Brodeur might get a break

Martin Brodeur (3-2, 2.93 GAA) has played every game for the Devils this season, but this weekend he might get a much deserved break.

Coach Jacques Lemaire is trying to decide when would be best to give his heralded netminder a rest. The Devils are favored against the Atlanta Thrashers Friday at -166 and will host the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday. If Brodeur does take a seat, unproven Yann Danis will take his place.

"We can't look for an easier game because there's none," Lemaire said. "I don't know exactly when he'll step in, but he will soon. I just want to see how good we're playing. If we play [well], we'll give him a chance."

New Jersey inked Danis in the offseason to be Brodeur's backup after losing Scott Clemmensen to Florida in free agency. Danis played well during stints in Long Island and Montreal, posting a 2.84 GAA and .910 save percentage, but has only taken the ice for 37 NHL games.

"I've just been watching Marty and some of the things he does, especially playing the puck," Danis said. "I think it's one of my weaknesses and to see what he's able to do, he's like a third defenseman. And seeing him every day and understanding that everything he does, there's always a thought behind it. Whatever he does is calculated and he works hard at it in practice."

      Manuel won't name closer

Even though Brad Lidge has preserved two one-run victories for Philadelphia this postseason, manager Charlie Manuel doesn't feel that he is guaranteed to get the ball in save situations during the NLCS.

"I don't want to sit here today and say one guy is going to be the closer on our team yet," he said. "I don't feel like I have to do that. I feel like our guys accept when I'm going to put them in the game."

Ryan Madson has been the Phils' other option to close out games, but with six blown chances to only 10 saves during the regular season, he has been more unreliable than Lidge.

That doesn't seem to matter to the Phillies colorful bench boss. When asked who would close, he replied, “Whoever you see walking out there.”

        Six-pack for Friday

Some college football trends with Week 6 upon us........

-- Favorite covered eight of last ten Ohio State-Purdue games.

-- San Diego State covered nine of last 13 as a home underdog.

-- Indiana is 8-13 vs spread in its last 21 Big 11 home games.

-- Underdog is 14-7 vs spread in last 21 Oklahoma-Texas games.

-- Home side covered seven of last eight Virginia-Maryland games.

-- Georgia is 2-8 vs spread in game after its last ten losses.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts from the desert........

        13) I was five feet and $69 away from meeting Pete Rose today; he signs autographs for a fee at a collectibles store in the Forum Shops at Caeser's Palace. He was sitting there, but the pictures he signs cost $69/$89. I'd rather lose the money myself at the tables than give it to him to gamble.

        12) And who says I would lose the money? So far, so good.

        11) The rule here is they allow smoking, but not in places where food is served; I've never smoked but I eat every day, so I'd rather they allow food in the sportsbook here, but noooooooo.........

        10) There is cool place on strip named O'Shea's with lower limit tables, and an excellent pizza place in the back. They also have a guy in front of the place with a mike trying to get people inside. Guy's a dwarf dressed as an Irishman, with green and white pants with shamrocks on them.

        9) Have to admit, looking out the window in my hotel room and seeing the lights on the strip ain't a bad thing.

        8) I can't escape George Lopez; the guy is all over WTBS' commercials and he was on one of the first billboards I saw by the Vegas airport.

        On to college football........
        7) Air Force is 3-3, despite a +16 turnover ratio.

        6) If Idaho and Boise State keep winning, would ESPN Gameday go to Boise for their November 14 game?

        5) Iowa has 18 interceptions in its last five games; three of their six wins are by three or less points.

        4) UNLV allowed 850 rushing yards, 122 points in its last two games.

        3) USC outscored Notre Dame 76-3 in their last two meetings.

        2) Georgia has been -2 or worse in turnovers in five of their six games; so far this season, the disappointing 3-3 Dawgs are -13 in turnovers.

        1) I'd love to know if these midweek college football games on ESPN are any help to the schools' recruiting efforts.

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (-140, 9)

It may be well into October, but expect to see plenty of balls flying out of Chavez Ravine in this series.

The Phillies have seen 13 of their past 15 road games go over the total, including a pair of wins in Colorado against the Rockies. Over its past five games, the Phillies are averaging more than five runs per outing, about a third of a run better than its 5.06-run-per-game average during the regular season.

“I think we've done a wonderful job with getting guys in scoring position, which we struggled last full season with,” Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino said. “We've done a great job this year and put ourselves in a good situation.”

Meantime, the Dodgers are 6-2-1 over/under in their past nine home games and have surpassed the number three times in their past five games overall. Against the Cardinals, Los Angeles crossed home plate at least five times twice in three games and has scored at least five runs in four of five overall.

                Pick: Over

Payoff pitch: Today’s best mound matchup
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Lackey (Los Angeles Angels) vs. C.C. Sabathia (New York Yankees)

                  John Lackey (11-8, 3.83 ERA)

Lackey became a household name when in 2002 he became only the second rookie ever to start and win Game 7 of the World Series. Since then he has continued to making his living anchoring the Angles' pitching staff in the postseason.

A perennial innings eater, it was no surprise that Lackey was handed the ball in the first game of the Division Series against the Boston Red Sox. He responded by tossing 7 1-3 innings of shutout ball against one on the league's most potent lineups. For his career, he boasts a 3.02 ERA in 12 postseason appearances, including 10 starts.

In his only start against the Yankees this season, Lackey tossed seven innings of two-run ball and picked up the victory in a 5-4 final at Angels Stadium. Equally effective on the road, Lackey made 14 starts, posting a 3.80 ERA and a 5-3 record.

                  C.C. Sabathia (19-8, 3.37 ERA)

It took Sabathia until mid May to win his second game as a Yankee. However, it wasn't his start that the Angels will be focused on, it is his finish. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound lefty won nine of his last twelve starts to narrowly miss posting his first 20-win season.

His dominance continued into the postseason where held the Twins to one run over 6 2-3 innings while striking out eight in New York's 7-2 rout of Minnesota.

Sabathia only made one start against the Halos this season and it wasn't pretty. He allowed five runs in 6 2-3 innings en route to an 8-4 loss at the new Yankee Stadium. However, it was during his early season struggles and one of only two losses he would suffer there all season.

The Yanks' prized offseason acquisition was simply stellar on home turf, finishing 7-2 with a 3.17 ERA, not including his masterful performance over Minnesota in the first-round of the playoffs.

MLB playoffs: Halos-Yanks series preview and pick
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees

                    Series odds: Yankees -167

                    Pitching

The Yankees have the best starting pitcher of the series in CC Sabathia, who is 12-2 since the All-Star Break. After Sabathia, the Yankees have only two reliable starters, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte. Rather than using Joba Chamberlain or Chad Gaudin as a fourth starter, New York is reportedly considering using Sabathia for Game 4 and, if necessary, Game 7. Sabathia was roughed up in two regular-season meetings with the Angels, however, going 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA.

The Angels have four solid starters in John Lackey, Jered Weaver, Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders. Kazmir, who owns a 2.67 ERA against the Yankees in his career, could be key in shutting down the left-handed power bats of the Yankees.

While L.A. has the advantage in starting pitching, New York gets the nod in the bullpen. Yankees relievers had the 14th-best ERA in baseball during the regular season, while the Angels ranked 23rd. LA closer Brian Fuentes saved two games against Boston last round, but he's nowhere near as automatic as the Yankees' Mariano Rivera.

                    Edge: Los Angeles

                    Offense

Offense has been the calling card for both teams this season. New York scored the most runs in the Majors, while the Angels ranked second. LA had the highest batting average in baseball, followed closely by the Yankees.

New York generates most of its offense with the long ball. Seven Yankees went deep 20 or more times this year, helping the team set a franchise record for home runs in a season. Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez combined for 69 homers and 222 RBIs, even with Rodriguez missing the first month of the season.

The Angels steal more bases and run the bases more aggressively. Chone Figgins and Bobby Abreu combined to swipe 74 bags during the regular season, setting the table for the rest of the order.

                    Edge: New York

                    Intangibles

Most teams are intimidated by playing New York, but the Angels aren't one of them. L.A. is the only American League team with a winning record against the Yankees over the past nine seasons, and the Angels eliminated New York from the playoffs in 2005.

Los Angeles got a huge monkey off its back by beating the Red Sox in the opening round, after falling to Boston in its previous three playoff meetings. Vladimir Guerrero entered the Boston series with only one RBI in his previous 17 postseason contests, but his two-out, two-run single off Jonathan Papelbon in Game 3 clinched the series win for the Halos.

As always, there's plenty of pressure on the Yankees, whose season will be viewed as a failure if they don't win their first World Series since 2000. Like Guerrero, Rodriguez exorcised some playoff demons in the opening round, hitting .455 with six RBIs in the first round and belting a clutch two-run ninth-inning home run off Twins closer Joe Nathan in Game 2.

New York has home-field advantage in the series, and that could be the difference. The Yankees were a league-best 57-24 at home this season.

                    Edge: New York

                    Pick: Yankees in seven games.
