    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, October 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sabres play host to the Red Wings, the Avalanche visit the Leafs, and the Warhawks hit the gridiron vs. the Red Wolves.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the schedule for Tuesday, with Arkansas State at Louisiana Monroe. The Red Wolves (1-3 SU, 1-2 ATS) came close against Iowa last time out but ended up on the wrong end of a 24-21 loss. The Warhawks (3-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) rolled past Florida International in their last game, winning 48-35. Oddsmakers opened Arkansas State as the 1-point road favorite.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up three games on Tuesday, with Calgary at Columbus, Colorado at Toronto, and Detroit at Buffalo. The Red Wings got back to the .500 mark with a 3-2 win over the Capitals last time out, but they've also lost forward Johan Franzen for the next four months with a torn ACL. The Sabres won their second straight game last time out, slipping past the Predators 1-0. Mike Grier had the lone Buffalo goal, while Ryan Miller had 25 saves for the win.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, October 13

      Who fills for the Bills?

As if the Buffalo Bills didn't have enough problems, they are down to their fourth-string middle linebacker. Starter Paul Posluszny is out with a broken arm and fill-ins Kawika Mitchell and Marcus Buggs both suffered season-ending injuries in Sunday's loss to Cleveland.

The starter for next week's road game vs. the New York Jets (no line yet) likely will be Keith Ellison. The Bills have dropped three in a row straight up and against the spread and are 29th against the run, allowing 154.6 yards per game.

      Too much rest?

CC Sabathia will start Game One of the ALCS for the New York Yankees. Much will be made of his 0-2 record and 6.85 ERA in two starts vs. the Los Angeles Angels this season. But it should also be noted that Sabathia will be pitching on nine days rest.

Over the last three seasons, Sabathia has made six starts at least a week apart due to rainouts, All-Star breaks or scheduling. In those games, he is 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. The outings have run the spectrum, from a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts to a pounding of eight runs in 4 1-3 innings.

The Yankees are -165 vs. the Angels, the third-lowest price they have been at home with Sabathia on the mound this year.

      Fanning the Flames

Miikka Kiprusoff didn't start out the season standing on his head, giving up three goals in each of Calgary's first four games. But the Flames won all four, which is all that matters to them and their backers. On Saturday, Kiprusoff got the night off in favor of Curtis McElhinney, who was lit up by Dallas in a 5-2 loss. Expect Kiprusoff to be back between the pipes when the Flames visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. Calgary is +125 with a total of 5.5.

      Switch for the Spartans

Michigan State tailback Glenn Winston is out for the season with a knee injury suffered in Saturday's win at Illinois, which may be a blessing in disguise. Winston had 204 yards and two TDs on 60 carries, splitting the rushing load with talented freshman Larry Caper, who has 275 yards and five TDs on 60 carries.

With quarterback Keith Nichol nursing an elbow injury, this could be an ideal time to turn loose Caper. The Spartans are giving 12 points to Northwestern, which is 41st in the country and fourth in the Big Ten in rushing defense, allowing 119.3 yards per game.

      Line moves

The line on the Arkansas State-Louisiana-Monroe game opened at even but has swelled to -2 at some books. That may be because WarHawks have covered their last four home games and the home team has won the last four meetings.

      On thin ice

In ESPN's Power Rankings, the Toronto Maple Leafs were last and labeled "easily the worst team in the NHL." Toronto dropped its first four games entering Monday's visit to New York and returns to play its first back-to-back against the Colorado Avalanche. The Leafs have allowed 17 goals in four games and are 3-1 against the over. Toronto is -135 with a total of 6.0.

      Notable quotable

"There are two types of dogs. There is Hebrew National and the other is generic. One is all meat and one is garbage, and that's what you have this year in football."

-- Wynn Las Vegas sports book director John Avello, revealing that there were some bettors who took the Oakland Raiders and 15.5 points against the unbeaten New York Giants. The Giants won, 44-7, even though quarterback Eli Manning played less than half the game.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Charlie Manuel got two saves out of Brad Lidge on the road; wow.

-- NLCS starts Thursday; ALCS starts Friday.

-- Chicago Blackhawks beat Calgary in OT after once trailing 5-0; that doesn't happen often in the NHL.

-- If I had a vote in the college football top 25 (and I should), my vote would go to Alabama right now.

-- Jets had covered six straight visits to Miami before losing Monday.

-- Ten years from now, they will be a Jet-Dolphin game on Monday Night Football, and they'll show clips from Monday's game, because Sanchez-Henne will still be playing QB for their respective teams.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Greed knows no bounds. The NFL is charging $90 to go to the Pro Bowl in Miami, and thats for freakin' upper level seats. Good grief.

        12) You wonder if the Jets are going all-out to win this year in order to sell PSLs for their new stadium; they've already traded a 1, a 2, two 3's and a 5th-round pick, plus seven players, to land Favre, Sanchez and Braylon Edwards. Thats 11 players to get three, and Favre is gone. Not the best way to construct a long-term winner, but we'll see how it goes.

        11) Cedric Benson is leading the NFL in rushing; thats a surprise.

        10) Kansas City lost its last nine home games; they used to have one of the best home field advantages in the league. Not anymore.

        9) I went to a minor league hockey game last Friday; caught last couple of innings of the Bronx-Minnesota extra inning game on the radio on the way home, where I was subjected to the worst radio broadcast team in the history of big league baseball. It was an inning before the play/play guy John Sterling reported the umpire had missed the call on the ball Joe Mauer hit down the leftfield line. Kind of an important fact there.

        8) Meanwhile, his broadcast partner is Suzyn Waldman, who should at least watch the TV feed to help her partner, since she does none of the play/play work. If New York City is indeed the media capitol, and the Bronx Bombers are such a storied franchise, shouldn't they have as good a broadcast team on TV/radio as humanly possible? Not even close.

        7) By the way, no sport gains as much in the translation from TV to in person as hockey. Hard to follow it on TV if you've never seen a game in person-- its great. Lot of neat things happen at a game that never show up in person-- the linesmen, Zambonis, all the fans who wear jerseys of their favorite player. If you've never seen a game in person, go see one.

        6) All five Redskin opponents this year were winless when Washington played them, and they play winless Kansas City this week. What will happen when the struggling Redskins start playing good teams?

        5) 29 of 32 NFL teams have gotten new/renovated stadiums in the last 20 years; only the Vikings, Chargers and 49ers haven't.

        4) I've been a Ram fan since 1966, I go see every game on TV, even in years like this, when they're not good. Sunday, Donnie Avery scored a TD in the 4th quarter to make the score 31-10 Vikings, a meaningless TD for a team losing its 15th consecutive game. So of course Avery did a Deion Sanders-like dance in the end zone- he looked like a jackass. The head coach addressed it after the game. Avery has since apologized.

        3) One huge difference between winning and losing teams in NFL; wide receivers on winning teams are generally much more courageous on balls thrown over the middle than guys on bad teams. Cincinnati receivers in Sunday's win consistently made tough catches in traffic.

        2) Suns-Warriors played an outdoor exhibition game Friday on a tennis court (the wooden floor was placed over the court) in Indian Wells, CA. Looked pretty cool on TV.

        1) The only part of the NFL **** shows I care about are when they say who is officially active/inactive that day, and when they make picks of who will win. The NFL is comical the way they pretend gambling doesn't exist. Bringing a Jimmy the Greek-type back would help ratings.

          This Day in Baseball

On October 13 in Baseball History...

          * 1903 - The Boston Pilgrims won the first World Series, five games to three, with a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

          * 1914 - The Boston Braves completed a sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics, first in World Series history, with a 3-1 victory.

          * 1915 - The Phillies get four runs early off Red Sox hurler Rube Foster in Game Five. The Red Sox break a tie in the ninth inning for the third time in the World Series, as reliever Eppa Rixey gives up Harry Hooper's second home run of the game and Boston wins 5-4 to take the Series in five.

          * 1921 - Art Nehf tossed a 1-0, four-hitter against the New York Yankees for the World Series title in eight games. The Giants scored their run in the first inning on an error by shortstop Roger Peckinpaugh.

          * 1960 - Bill Mazeroski opened the bottom of the ninth with a home run off Ralph Terry of the Yankees to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 10-9 victory and the World Series in seven games.

          * 1965 - Jim "Mudcat" Grant does it all himself, hitting a three-run home run and pitching a 5-1 win at Minnesota to knot the World Series with the Dodgers after six games.

          * 1970 - The Orioles win their third straight over the Reds, 9-3, with winning pitcher Dave McNally slugging a grand slam. Frank Robinson and Don Buford also contribute homers and third baseman Brooks Robinson continues his excellence with the glove as he makes two spectacular grabs in the field.

          * 1971 - The first World Series night game was played in Pittsburgh with the Pirates beating Baltimore 4-3. Roberto Clemente had three hits for Pittsburgh.
          * 1973 - The Mets hold the A's to four hits in the World Series opener, but three of those hits come in the two-run third inning as the A's win 2-1.

          * 1974 - Los Angeles, behind Don Sutton, evens the Series with a 3-2 win. The Dodgers score in the second off Vida Blue, and a two-run home run by Joe Ferguson in the sixth provides the winning margin.

          * 1978 - New York third baseman Graig Nettles put on a fielding clinic and prevented seven runs as the Yankees beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in the third game of the World Series. Nettles made four spectacular stops and gave the Yankees the first victory of the series.

          * 1979 - Baltimore scores six runs in the eighth inning en route to a 9-6 win, taking a 3-1 Series advantage over the Pirates. Pinch-hit doubles by John Lowenstein and Terry Crowley drive in four runs.

          * 1984 - A pair of two-run home runs by Alan Trammell provide all Detroit's scoring as Jack Morris beats the Padres 4-2 in Game Four. The Tigers are now just one win away from the title.

          * 1985 - The Cardinals rout the Dodgers, 12-2, to even the NLCS. The Cards, however, lose rookie sensation Vince Coleman to one of the more bizarre injuries in major-league history. Coleman is stretching before the game when his left leg becomes caught in Busch Stadium's automated tarpaulin as it unrolls across the infield, trapping him for about 30 seconds. He does not play again in 1985.

          * 1993 - Tommy Greene of Philadelphia outpitched Greg Maddux and the Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 6-3 to win the National League pennant in six games.

          * 1995 - Jay Buhner, whose error in right field allowed the Indians to tie the game, hits his second home run of the game in the top of the eleventh inning to lead the Mariners to a 5-2 victory in Game Three of the ALCS. Norm Charlton hurls three hitless innings in relief to give the Mariners a 2-1 series lead.

          * 1996 - Powered by a three-homer third inning and eight strong innings from Andy Pettitte, New York won its 34th American League pennant with a 6-4 victory over Baltimore. The Yankees took the ALCS 4-1 and went to the World Series for the first time since 1981.

          * 1998 - The New York Yankees advanced to the World Series for a record 35th time after beating the Cleveland Indians 9-5 to win the AL championship series in six games.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres (-110, 5.5)

It’s been a long time since Todd Bertuzzi was considered a top line forward, but he’s getting a chance to prove his doubters wrong.

Wings head coach Mike Babcock is letting the burly right winger play with two of the league’s best forwards, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg.

Bertuzzi got bumped to the No. 1 line primarily because of the injury to Johan Franzen.

Even though Bertuzzi didn’t register a point in Detroit’s win over the Caps on Saturday, Babcock told reporters afterwards that it was the best game he’d seen from Bertuzzi “in a number of years.”

“I think I’m capable of playing with (Datsyuk and Zetterberg),” Bertuzzi told Michigan Live. “It would be nice to get some chemistry with them and try to contribute.”

Detroit got back to its style of play over the weekend holding the explosive Capitals to just 23 shots. Even though they’re on the road against a good Buffalo team, you’ve got to like the Wings priced this low.

                Pick: Red Wings

Colorado Avalanche at Toronto Maple Leafs (-135, 6)

What’s the worst job in the NHL? If you said Alex Ovechkin’s barber, you were close but not bang on.

Fans of the Maple Leafs are always hard on players on the team that are slumping, but none more than the starting netminder.

Vesa Toskala is at the very bottom of all major stat categories for goalies and is a big part of why the Buds are still in search of their first win this season. If it were up to the mob mentality of Leaf Nation, Toskala would be run out of town.

But the decision is up to coach Ron Wilson, and although he’s going with Joey MacDonald for Tuesday’s game against the Avs, he insists the starting job still belongs to Toskala.

“Right now Vesa starts and that’s where it ends,” Wilson told the Toronto Star.

The Leafs might not win Tuesday’s match, but you can bet they’ll play better in front of their own net.

                Pick: Under

                          Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for October 13, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                          1. Quick Hits

Down to their last strike the Phillies rally to score 3 runs in the 9th to eliminate the Rockies in 4 games, 5-4. The Phillies will now face the Dodgers in the NL Championship series starting Thursday in L.A. The Governor of Colorado had declared the month to be Rocktober. To quote fark.com "Rocktober is over, welcome to blowvember."
Dee-fense, dee-fense, what defense? In a 4th quarter shootout the Miami Dolphins had the ball last, so they won. They beat the Jets 31-27. There were 35 points scored in the 4th quarter.
Comeback of the night: The Chicago Blackhawks. They trailed Calgary 5-0 in the first period and won 6-5 in overtime. That ties the biggest comeback in NHL history.

                          2. Here's to the Winners

Boy you guys are getting sensitive. Yesterday you chastised me for not mentioning the Dodgers sweep of the Cards, the Broncos going 5 and 0 by beating New England, and the U.S. winning the President's Cup in golf. Haven't you caught on yet? It's more fun bashing losers than praising winners. So if it makes you feel better. Congrats to all the winners where ever they may be. Good, now that's over with lets get back to having some fun.

                          3. Rush to Judgment

I'm thinking there's no way Rush Limbaugh will win approval to be a part owner in the St. Louis Rams. The Players Association has not only complained to the Commissioner, but they're urging players to speak out against Limbaugh. Al Sharpton has started chirping. And last week, the New York Daily News reported that some black players would boycott his team. Limbaugh's Obama bashing has a lot to do with it. Limbaugh also stepped into racial waters when he made some controversial comments about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb back in 2003. Limbaugh makes for "colorful radio," but doesn't exactly form a Rainbow Coalition when it comes to team ownership.

                          4. Now Hear This

I'm glad so many of you commented on Bob (Yankee PA announcer) Sheppard's 99th birthday yesterday. (Bob told Newsday that despite it all, his birthday is really October 20th.) Anyway, here's another Bob story. I was once at a Bar Mitzvah where Bob was a guest. During the kid's candle lighting ceremony, Bob stood by the boy and his cake making the announcements. "Ladies and gentlemen your attention please. Will Grandma Tessie and Grandpa Max please come up to light the next candle." Priceless.

                          5. Lemme in Coach

The coach of the French soccer team, Raymond Domenech is under fire for his team's performance. But he is also "on fire" to a former porn actress. Catherine Ringer has recorded a hit song in France entitled "Je Kiffe Raymond (I Fancy Raymond). One of the lyrics, “If he attacked my penalty areas, I would be without defenders." Wow. This opens up all sorts of possibilities over here. How about "Je t'aime Bill." (I love Bill). An ode to Bill Parcells. "If he opens my can of tuna, I wouldn't cry illegal procedure."

Happy Birthday: Tonya Harding's buddy, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. 40.
Bonus Birthday: Borat (or whoever) Sacha Baron Cohen. 38.

Today in Sports: Bill Mazeroski's home run wins the World Series for Pittsburgh against the Yankees. 1960.
Bonus Event: Things will never be the same. They play the first World Series night game in Pittsburgh. The Pirates beat the Orioles 4-3. 1971.
Extra Bonus Moments: For the only time in Top 5 history, Pittsburgh wins in both the Today in Sports, and Bonus Event category. 2009.
