    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, October 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Broncos play host to the Patriots, the Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Auto Club, and the baseball playoffs continue.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Bengals and Ravens will fight for top spot in the AFC North on Sunday when the teams meet in Baltimore for a 1:00pm ET contest. Cincinnati improved to 3-1 straight-up (2-2 against-the-spread) with a 23-20 road win over the Browns last time out. Baltimore (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) was tagged with its first loss of the season last week, falling 27-21 to the Patriots in New England. Oddsmakers have the Ravens listed as 8.5-point home favorites, with the total for the game at 42 points.

The other early-afternoon NFL matchups for Sunday: Cleveland at Buffalo (-6), Washington at Carolina (-4), Pittsburgh (-10.5) at Detroit, Dallas (-7.5) at Kansas City, Oakland at the Giants (-15), Tampa Bay at Philadelphia (-15.5), and Minnesota (-10) at St. Louis. The Vikings are 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS after beating the Packers on Monday night. The Rams are at 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS this season.

The late-afternoon games on Sunday have Atlanta at San Francisco (-2.5), Houston at Arizona (-5.5), Jacksonville at Seattle (PK), and New England (-3) at Denver. The Patriots (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) will be looking to hand the Broncos (4-0 SU, 4-0 ATS) their first loss of the season. The Sunday nighter then has Indianapolis (-3.5) at Tennessee. The Colts are riding high at 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS, while the Titans are close to writing off the season at 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA) vs. Carl Pavano (14-12, 5.10 ERA) on Sunday as the Yankees and Twins continue their ALDS in Minnesota. Lefthander Pettitte lost to the Rays in his most recent start, giving up five runs (three earned) over 4 1-3 innings. Righthander Pavano beat the Royals in his last trip to the hill.

The Angels' Scott Kazmir (10-9, 4.89 ERA) takes on the BoSox's Clay Buchholz (7-4, 4.21 ERA) as the other ALDS heads back to Boston for Sunday's Game 3. Lefthander Kazmir blanked the A's over five innings for a win in his last start of the season. Righthander Buchholz has allowed 13 runs over his last eight innings.

Over in the NL the divisional series between the Phillies and Rockies will be in Colorado for Game 3 on Sunday. Jason Hammel (10-8, 4.33 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Rockies; righthander Hammel tossed a couple of scoreless innings against the Dodgers last Sunday. J.A. Happ (12-4, 2.93 ERA) will start for Philly.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are two games on the NHL's Sunday slate, with Dallas at Vancouver and Anaheim at the Rangers. New York improved to 3-1-0 on the season with a 4-3 road win over the Capitals on Thursday night. Marian Gaborik scored twice in the third period to seal that victory, while Ryan Callahan and Ales Kotalik had the other Rangers tallies. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 25 of 28 Capitals shots in the win.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series hit the track at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Pepsi 500. Tony Stewart won at Kansas last time out, which boosted him up a spot in the Chase standings to fourth. Mark Martin holds an 18-point lead on Jimmie Johnson in the standings after three Chase events, with Juan Montoya in third place. Matt Kenseth won the Auto Club 500 on the track back in February, and Johnson is the defending champ at the race.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, October 11

      Low balling

Anyone who subscribes to the theory that playoff baseball is all about pitching and defense should be making a killing. The under is 6-1-1 through the first eight postseason games and, as of this writing, it looks like the Dodgers and Cards will help improve the mark to 7-1-1.

Tomorrow’s totals are all 9 or higher, so there may still be some value on the under.

      Badly balanced Bills

Buffalo’s no-huddle offense has not been effective in the club’s last two outings. The Bills have scored just 17 points over the stretch, but even more troubling is their inability to stay on the field.

Profootballtalk.com and the Buffalo News rightly highlighted this troubled area of concern for Bills backers. Dick Jaron’s crew is dead last in time of possession, averaging 25:26.

Quarterback Trent Edwards is brutal on third downs, meaning quick three and outs far too often for the north New Yorkers. That doesn’t do much to help an injury plagued defense either.

“We’re not helping our defense at all,” RB Fred Jackson told reporters. “You can’t score if you don’t have the ball. We have to do a better job of staying on the field and keeping drives alive.”

They should get a good shot going against the Browns tomorrow. Cleveland owns one of the worst defenses in the league. Buffalo gives 6 points and the total is sitting at 41.

      Dallas missing stars

The Cowboys will not have No. 1 receiver Roy Williams and backup tailback Felix Jones for Sunday’s game at Kansas City. Both players stayed behind in Dallas due to injuries.

Dallas gives 9 points to the hosting Chiefs with the total set at 42.

      Pedro lefty behind

Pedro Martinez was originally scheduled to start Game 3 against the Rockies, but once the game was postponed to Sunday because of snow, the Phillies went in another direction.

Manager Charlie Manuel will give the ball to rookie J.A. Happ. The lefty made a relief appearance in Game 2 of the series, but left in the seventh before recording an out after getting hit in the left leg by a liner.

Happ says the leg is a nonissue and is ready to go.

Colorado backers shouldn’t be too happy to see another southpaw face their team on the bump. The Rockies went 27-26 against lefty starters compared to 65-44 against right-handers.

Tomorrow’s game is pretty much a pick ‘em with the Phillies priced at -110.

No news is bad news for Detroit bettors

It’s still unclear who’ll be under center for the Lions for their game against the Steelers. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz told reporters Friday that he won’t decide on who’ll be starting at quarterback for his team until Sunday.

Rookie Matthew Stafford played his best game of the season last week against the Bears but left the game after injuring his knee. If the knee prevents him from playing, Detroit will turn to veteran Daunte Culpepper.

Oddsmakers have the Lions getting 10.5 points at home with the total resting at 44

        This Day in Baseball

On October 11 in Baseball History...

1911 - The first MVPs are announced and Ty Cobb receives the maximum 64 points. The NL winner is Cubs outfielder Frank Schulte, with Christy Mathewson second. Both winners receive Chalmers automobiles.

1913 - Eddie Plank tossed a two-hitter against the New York Giants to give the Philadelphia Athletics a 3-1 victory and the World Series in five games.

1925 - Walter Johnson wins his third straight World Series contest over two years, 4-0. A three-run home run by Goose Goslin followed by a solo shot by Joe Harris gives the Senators a 4-0 win and 3-1 Series advantage over the Pirates.

1943 - New York's Spud Chandler shut out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 as the Yankees won the World Series in five games. Chandler gave up 10 hits and stranded 11 runners.

1948 - In Boston, Cleveland nips the Braves 4-3 to take the World Series in six games. Rookie lefty Gene Bearden is the pitching hero in relief.

1967 - Rico Petrocelli's two home runs led the Boston Red Sox in an 8-4 triumph over the St. Louis Cardinals and forced a seventh game in the World Series.

1969 - Don Buford's leadoff home run starts a 4-1 Baltimore win over the Mets to open the World Series. Mike Cuellar bests Tom Seaver in what will be New York's only postseason loss of the year.

1971 - Brooks Robinson ties a World Series record by reaching base five straight times on three hits and two walks as Baltimore rolls over Pittsburgh, 11-3. The defending World Champion Orioles hold a 2-0 Series advantage.

1972 - Bob Moose's wild pitch in the ninth inning allowed George Foster to score the winning run as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 and captured the NLCS in the fifth game.

1973 - Catfish Hunter throws a five-hitter as Oakland beats Baltimore 3-0 in Game Five to take the AL pennant.

1975 - Boston's Luis Tiant shuts down the Big Red Machine and scores the first run as the Red Sox win the opening game of the 1975 World Series, 6-0.

1977 - The Yankees beat the Dodgers in the opening game of the World Series in 12 innings, 4-3. Willie Randolph doubles and scores the winning run on a single by Paul Blair.

1978 - The Dodgers take a 2-0 World Series lead as Ron Cey drives in all the Dodger runs and Reggie Jackson does the same for the Yankees. Bob Welch saves Burt Hooton's 4-3 win in dramatic fashion by striking out Jackson in the ninth inning.

1979 - Manny Sanguillen's pinch-hit, two-out single in the ninth inning of Game Two breaks a tie as the Pirates win, 3-2, and even the World Series.

1980 - In one of the most exciting and controversial games in playoff history, the Phillies tie the NLCS with a 10-inning 5-3 win over the Astros in Game Four. In the fourth inning, Houston is deprived of an apparent triple play when the umpires rule that pitcher Vern Ruhle traps Garry Maddox's soft line drive. In the sixth, Houston loses a run when Gary Woods leaves the base early on Luis Pujols' would-be sacrifice fly.

1981 - Steve Rogers wins Game Five of the NL East Divisional playoff for Montreal over Philadelphia by twirling a six-hit shutout and knocking in two of his team's runs in a 3-0 victory.

1985 - George Brett's four hits, including two homers, led the Kansas City Royals to 6-5 comeback victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the third game of the ALCS.

1986 - Len Dykstra's two-run home run off Dave Smith with one out in the bottom of the ninth gives the Mets a 6-5 win over the Astros and a 2-1 lead in the NLCS.

1992 - Dennis Eckersley, who saved 51 games for Oakland during the season, surrenders a two-run home run to Roberto Alomar that sends Game Four of the ALCS into extra innings. The Blue Jays go on to win 7-6 in 11 innings and take a 3-1 series edge.

1996 - With the ALCS tied at 1-1 and the game tied at 2-2, Orioles third baseman Todd Zeile fakes a throw and the ball trickles away to allow the go-ahead run to score. Cecil Fielder follows with a home run and the Yankees win, 5-2.

1997 - One of the most bizarre endings in ALCS history, the winning run scores on a botched squeeze play. With Marquis Grissom racing home from third base, Omar Vizquel bunts and misses and the ball trickles a few feet from the plate. Orioles catcher Lenny Webster thinks it's a foul ball and loafs after it as Grissom streaks home for a 2-1 Cleveland win. Baltimore starter Mike Mussina strikes out an LCS record 15 batters in seven innings in the difficult twilight at Jacobs Field, but has nothing to show for it.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox (-139, 9)

          Enough is enough.

The Los Angeles Angels can’t stand the thought of losing to the Boston Red Sox again and are making sure this series will at least end back in La-La Land. The Halos head to Beantown with a 2-0 series lead and a ton of confidence.

"We want it," outfielder Torii Hunter told reporters. "I mean, I can't say we want it more than those guys, but we definitely want it. I'm pretty sure they want it, too. It's just not working out for them. We've just got to keep putting the pressure on them and stay hungry. You've got to kick somebody when they're down, and that's what we're doing."

The Red Sox have shown few signs of life, especially at the plate. They’ve been limited to one run on eight hits and have .131 BA heading back home to Fenway Park. Boston hasn’t been able to cash in runners when they do have them, hitting just .111 with just one RBI in nine opportunities.

The Angels, on the other hand, are making the most of their chances. While Los Angeles is hitting a ho-hum .228 over the first two games, the club's batting .429 with RISP and has an even more impressive ability to keep drives alive with a .500 BA with RISP and two outs.

          Pick: Los Angeles

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The payoff pitch: Sunday's best mound matchup
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andy Pettitte (New York Yankees) vs. Carl Pavano (Minnesota Twins)

            Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16 ERA)

Pettitte and Pavano were teammates for two seasons in the Big Apple. But while Pavano couldn’t stand the spotlight in New York, Pettitte flourished. The veteran lefty has won at least 14 games in his three seasons back in the Empire State including this season.

Pettitte wrapped the regular season going 1-2 with a 4.41 ERA. The numbers were on par with his season but Pettitte did struggle to go past the sixth inning in the final month of the schedule. His last start, he went on 4 1-3 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Pettitte owns a career 9-5 record and 3.70 ERA against the Twins. He last faced them in the middle of May, lasting just under seven innings while allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in a 7-6 victory.

He’s no stranger to October baseball and has performed on the biggest stages including being on the mound for World Series clincher against the Mets in 2000. In the playoffs, Pettitte owns a 14-9 record and 3.96 ERA.

            Carl Pavano (14-12, 5.10 ERA)

Pavano got a ticket to the postseason, coming to the Twins from the Cleveland Indians midway through the year. The veteran righty went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in his 12 starts for Minnesota.

He closed out the schedule with 2-1 record but an ERA just south of 9.00. He failed to go at least six innings in two of those starts and was beat up for seven run in his final road start at the end of September.

Pavano has faced the Yankees twice this year while still a member of the Tribe. He was solid, allowing only four total runs in over 13 innings of work. For his career he has a 3.50 ERA against New York.

Pavano hasn’t pitched in the postseason since his days with the Florida Marlins. In 2003, he went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA in eight appearances and helped the Marlins shock the Yankees in the World Series.

                        Write-Up

                        Sunday, October 11

Red Sox scored one run in losing two games in Anaheim; Buchholz has a 14.63 RA in his last two starts (13 runs/eight IP), after being 5-0, 1.10 in the six starts before that- he didn't face the Angels this year. Kazmir has a 1.98 RA in his starts for the Angels; he was 2-0, 3.27 in two starts vs Boston this year, when he was pitching for the Rays. All six of Kazmir's Angel starts stayed under the total.

Minnesota lost big chance to even series when they blew 3-1 lead in 9th inning Friday. Pavano was '08 Opening Day starter for Bronx; he has an 8.44 RA in his last three starts. Pettitte is 1-2, 5.49 in last four starts; he beat Twins 7-6 back on May 18, giving up four runs in six IP. Under is 5-2-2 in Pavano's last nine starts, 3-0 in Pettitte's last three.

Cold weather in Denver, real cold- this is only series that is tied after the first two games. Hammel is 2-0, 4.42 in his last three starts; he won 8-3 at Philly allowing three runs in 6.2 IP August 4th. Three of his last four starts went over the total. Phillies switched to Happ for this game after the postponement because Rockies aren't as good against lefties. Happ has a 5.24 RA in his last five starts, with four stayed under the total.

Tortorella opted to bench struggling defenseman Michal Rozsival for the last half of Thursday’s game against the Washington Capitals leaving only five players on the defensive rotation, including two rookies.

But all five blueliners stepped up their game against the Capitals’ powerhouse offense. Dan Girardi and Marc Staal delivered brilliant performances and Michael Del Zotto found Marian Gaborik for the power-play winner with 9:18 to go in the third.

“What I like about the kids is that I don't think they're afraid,” Tortorella said of defensemen Michael Del Zotto and Matt Gilroy. “They don't want to test the water, they want to make a difference.

“They make mistakes, yes, but they are mistakes of aggression. We want to be aggressive away from the puck as a team where we're not afraid to make mistakes.”

The Rangers are feeling confident after winning three in a row and could take advantage of a tired Ducks team who had to face the Flyers on Saturday night.

                            Pick: Rangers

                              Sunday six-pack

-- I bought ESPN the Magazine for a school fundraiser as a favor to a friend, so of course the first issue that comes in the mail is filled with nearly-nude athletes. Has everyone at ESPN lost their mind?

-- Baseball playoffs can be cruel; six months of good work went away in four miserable days for the Cardinals, who got swept 3-0 by LA.

-- Rockies-Phillies game pretty much had to be a night game Sunday because Broncos are playing the Patriots at Invesco in the afternoon.

-- Navy hung 63 points on Rice, running ball for 471 yards, throwing only three passes the whole game. Poor Rice is now 0-6.

-- Virginia Tech led Boston College 31-0 with 8:15 left in first half, as Eagles had their second consecutive nightmare on the road.

-- Florida State was 4-29 in the three seasons before Bobby Bowden became head coach of the Seminoles; he built then into one of the most powerful and most fun teams to watch. Some of the jackasses who are pushing for his retirement should think about that.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday....

                              13) Not a great day of college football, but what a performance in MAC by Bowling Green WR Freddie Barnes, who caught 22 passes for 287 yards and three TDs, in a game Falcons won 36-35 at Kent. Bowling Green overcame having a blocked FG run back for a TD to get the win.

                              12) UCLA led Oregon 3-0 at the half, then gave up three TDs in first 3:54 of the second half, as the Ducks won 24-10 in Pasadena. Only TD UCLA scored was scored by the defense.

                              11) Arkansas had 19 first downs in the first half against Auburn, five via penalties, as Razorbacks gave Auburn its first loss of the season.

                              10) Vanderbilt fumbled on the 1-yard line in OT, lost 16-13 to Army, as both the winning FG and Vandy's tying FG banked in off an upright.

                              9) Two weeks ago, Indiana lost 36-33 at Michigan and looked halfway decent; Saturday, they were down 30-0 at the half to Virginia. Ugh.

                              8) Idaho Vandals are 5-1 after winning 29-25 at San Jose State. Thats one win away from bowl eligibility-- Humanitarian Bowl in Boise????

                              7) Georgia Tech's relentless running attack racked up 401 yards as they wore down Florida State and won 49-44, in a game delayed for an hour in the first quarter by thunderstorms in Tallahassee.

                              6) Texas Tech was winning 59-14 with 5:00 left but was still throwing the ball, scoring another TD with 4:19 left. Whats the point?

                              5) Mississippi State ran ball for 330 yards but lost; they had the tying TD called back by a penalty with 5:00 left, wound up losing 31-24.

                              4) Duke coach David Cutcliffe mentored both Manning brothers, now he is performing his magic with Duke QB Thaddeus Lewis, who in his last two games is 62-90 for 821 yards, against Virginia Tech, NC State.

                              3) Alabama held Ole Miss to 197 total yards, forced five turnovers in a horribly dull 22-3 win over the Rebels in Oxford. What a defense Bama has, but what happened to the Ole Miss offense since last year?

                              2) Nevada ran ball for 345 yards Friday night against Louisiana Tech; in their last two games, Wolf Pack have amassed 904 rushing yards.

                              1) From the horrendous coaching department, we have Arizona's coach Mike Stoops. Wildcats had ball with 2:55 left, up 33-28; Washington had two timeouts left. Instead of running the ball, Arizona throws it on first down, ball gets picked off, run back for a TD and Arizona loses. Sometimes being conservative isn't such a horrible thing.
