    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, October 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cardinals try to stay alive against the Dodgers, the Rockies host the Phillies, and No. 1 Florida prepares to battle LSU.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The top game on the college football schedule for Saturday has No. 1 Florida at No. 4 LSU, with the oddsmakers pegging the Gators as modest 7-point favorites pending definitive word on QB Tim Tebow's status for the game. Florida beat Kentucky 41-7 in their last outing two weeks ago, with Tebow throwing for 103 yards and a score before getting knocked out of the game. The Tigers are coming off a 20-13 win over Georgia. The total for the matchup is at 44.5 points.

The other ranked matchup for Saturday has No. 3 Alabama at No. 20 Mississippi. The unbeaten Crimson Tide dispatched Kentucky 38-20 last time out, with Greg McElroy going 15-of-26 for 148 yards and two touchdowns in the game. Mark Ingram ran for 140 yards and two scores. Mississippi got past Vanderbilt 23-7 in their last game, with Jevan Snead throwing for 237 yards and three touchdowns. The Tide are 4.5-point favorites for Saturday, with the contest's total at 46 points.

In other Top 10 action on Saturday it's Colorado at No. 2 Texas (-32.5), Boston College at No. 5 Virginia Tech (-13.5), Wisconsin at No. 9 Ohio State (-16), and No. 10 TCU (-10.5) at Air Force. Three Top-10 teams all have byes in Week 6, with No. 6 Boise State, No. 7 USC, and No. 8 Cincinnati all getting a short break.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Both NLDS continue on Saturday, with the Dodgers at St. Louis and Philadelphia at Colorado. Los Angeles will send Vicente Padilla (4-0, 3.20 in the NL) to the mound in Saturday's Game 3 as the Dodgers try to sweep the best-of-five set. Righthander Padilla beat the Rockies last time out, holding them to one earned run over five innings. The Cards counter with Joel Pineiro (15-12, 3.49 ERA). Righthander Pineiro gave up four runs over five innings to the Brewers last outing.

In the later game on Saturday the Rockies will go with Jason Hammel (10-8, 4.33 ERA) as they try to win a second consecutive game and take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five set. Righthander Hammel tossed a couple of scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Sunday, and beat the Brewers in his last start (four runs in five innings). Pedro Martinez (5-1, 3.63 ERA) is the probable starter for the Phillies; righthander Martinez has given up six runs over his last seven innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are 13 games on the NHL's schedule for Saturday, including Washington at Detroit. The Capitals fell 4-3 to the Rangers last time out, with Nicklas Backstrom scoring twice in a losing cause. Jose Theodore stopped 25 of the 29 New York shots in that contest. The Red Wings picked up their first win of the season by slipping past the Blackhawks 3-2 on Thursday night. Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper, and Johan Franzen had the goals, and Chris Osgood had 32 saves.

Also on the ice on Saturday: the Islanders at Boston, New Jersey at Florida, Pittsburgh at Toronto, Atlanta at Ottawa, Anaheim at Philadelphia, Carolina at Tampa Bay, Los Angeles at St. Louis, Buffalo at Nashville, Colorado at Chicago, Columbus at Phoenix, Minnesota at San Jose, and Montreal at Edmonton. The Habs were throttled 7-1 by the Canucks on Wednesday night, as Carey Price allowed seven goals on 32 shots. The Oilers fell 4-3 to the Flames last time out.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, October 10

      Cold wings

The last thing Detroit needed to lose was another scorer. But on Friday, the team learned Johan Franzen is out with at least four months with a torn ACL. Franzen had 34 goals and 25 assists in just 71 games last year and his injury, along with defected free agent and 40-goal scorer Marian Hossa, leaves a big hole in the team’s attack. The Red Wings are -135 against Washington with a total of six.

      Power outage

The Tampa Bay Lightning are trying to get anything positive to happen to start the season. The Lightning have been outscored nearly 2-1 through three games (0-2-1) and things won get much easier when they host a scrappy Carolina team on Saturday. The penalty kill has been a big issue so far, killing off just 70 percent of opposing man advantages. Take a long look at Carolina at +115 with a total of six goals.

      Fighting word

Senator teammates Chris Neil and Jason Spezza dropped the gloves in practice this morning, showing that the fire Ottawa played with in its past two games was for real. Spezza, however, needs to pick up his play as he has yet to score this season. Ottawa is minus-145 against Atlanta on Saturday with a total of 6 goals.

      Hasselbeck is back

The Seahawks are expecting to get a huge lift as quarterback Matt Hasselbeck is expected to be under center when the team hosts Jacksonville on Sunday. Seahawks have lost three straight, missing the three-time Pro Bowler for all but the first two quarters of the slide. The team also has failed to crack 20 points during its losing streak. Seattle is getting three points.

      Blocking foul

Like the Redskins needed anything else to worry about. The team seems to be in utter disarray as running back Clinton Portis has divided the locker room by requesting a new lead blocker instead of starting fullback Mike Sellers. The fullback had to be restrained by teammates and led the team to work out free agent running back Keon Lattimore. The Redskins are getting four points against the Panthers.

      Snow patrol

We hope the Phillies packed their long johns for their trip to Colorado. The forecast for Denver calls for a 30 percent chance of precipitation with a 10 mph wind. The catch? With a low that could drop down to the low 30s, snow is a definite possibility. Pedro Martinez will make the chilly start for the Phillies at 38 years old and have to battle the elements as well as the potent Colorado lineup. Philadelphia is plus-111 with a total of nine runs.

      SEC shootout

Oddsmakers believe that Auburn at Arkansas will put on quiet the fireworks display when the clash on Saturday morning, putting the total at 66.But recent history between the two sides says the matchup shouldn’t be a high-scoring duel. Three of the past four meetings have fallen under the number, with the road team winning and covering each of the past four meetings.

      QUOTE OF THE DAY

"You're not sure what kind of U.S. team you're going to get when you travel to Honduras or El Salvador or Costa Rica. At this point when U.S. Soccer has grown and competed in World Cups throughout the years, shouldn't we be above that?"

--Former U.S. Captain John Harkes on the team’s road woes in World Cup qualifying. The U.S. plays at Honduras on Saturday needing a win to lock up a World Cup berth.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 15 preview and picks
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Saturday, October 10

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-10.5, 50)

Good thing the Argos have one of the best defences in the league. Bettors just can’t imagine what it would be like if their defence was has inept has their offence. The Argos did not score a passing touchdown in their last five games, going back to August 28. No wonder QB Kerry Joseph is fed up with rookie head coach Bart Andrus, who will probably start Cody Pickett again. He described the situation in Toronto as a fiasco and he was right. It is said that Joseph and Andrus ironed out their differences. “I can understand the frustration” said Andrus to the media after Joseph’s outburst. If true, that may be reassuring for Argos fans since Joseph has had success against his former team since he was traded to Toronto two years ago. In three games against the Roughriders, he threw for 914 yards with nine touchdown passes. The Roughriders also have their own quarterback controversy, where Riders coach Ken Miller suggested this week he will probably alternate QB’s Darian Durant and Steven Jyles. But it is nothing next to the melodrama that has kept unfolding in Toronto since the start of the season.

        Pick: Saskatchewan -10.5

        Monday, October 12

Calgary Stampeders at Montreal Alouettes (-6, 51.5)

Will this be a preview of the next Grey Cup? It could very well be. The Alouettes will most likely play without RB Avon Cobourne (groin injury) but their running game should still be potent with backup Brendan Whittaker. Montreal’s Anthony Calvillo and Calgary’s Henry Burris are two of the best quarterbacks in the game. Both can throw to some of the best wide receivers in the business. But Burris has been a disappointment in his last three outings, with a QB rating of only 57.1. Calgary won a narrow 15-14 win against Hamilton last week without scoring a touchdown – the first since 1995. It will be tough for Burris to rebound against the tightest defence in the CFL. The last time these two teams met, the Alouettes won 40-27 in the season opener in Calgary. Despite Cobourne’s absence, the Als, at home, should once again prevail.

        Pick: Montreal -6

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Hamilton Tiger Cats (-6, 47)

Veteran QB Kevin Glenn would sure like to face the team that rejected him after last season. But Quinton Porter is the No. 1 QB in Hamilton and, despite Glenn’s displeasure with that situation, nothing gives the impression that coach Marcel Bellefeuille has changed his mind. The Tiger Cats, after pulling a few upsets, have lost three of their last four games. This will be a game with much at stake. With a third win in a row, the Bombers would rise to second place in the East, tied with the Tiger Cats. These two teams will meet again on November 8 in the last game of the regular season. The Bombers have made peace with veteran linebacker Barrin Simpson, who returned to the practice field Wednesday but it is still unclear whether he will play or not on this Thanksgiving game. But the Bombers will be in need of a middle linebacker after Joe Lobendahn was injured last week against the Eskimos and I would be surprised if Simpson didn’t play Monday. Wide Receiver Terrence Edward, who missed the last two games due to a concussion, could also be back in the lineup. Import DE Gavin Walls missed Wednesday’s practice with a knee injury and may miss the game. Last time these two met in Hamilton, The Tiger Cats won 25-13. Expect a similar result.

        Pick: Hamilton -6

        (Last Week 3-1, season 29-23)

          This Day in Baseball

On October 10 in Baseball History...

1904 - Boston clinched the pennant on the last day of the season when Jack CheXXXo of the New York Highlanders threw a wild pitch in the ninth to allow the winning run to score from third. The Red Sox won 3-2 in the doubleheader opener.

1906 - Ed Reulbach's no-hit bid is broken by Jiggs Donahue's single in the seventh, but the Cubs beat the White Sox, 7-1. The next World Series one-hitter will come in 1945, by another Cub: Claude Passeau.

1920 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-1 in the fifth game of the World Series. For the Indians, Elmer Smith hit the first Series grand slam and Jim Bagby, the winner, hit the first Series homer by a pitcher.

1923 - It's an all-New York World Series for the third straight year. A 4-4 tie is broken in the top of the ninth by the Giants. Casey Stengel's inside-the-park home run is the first World Series homer at Yankee Stadium. It is the first World Series to be broadcast on a nationwide radio network.

1924 - The Washington Senators won their only championship by defeating the Giants 4-3 in 12 innings. The winning run scored when a ball hit by Earl McNeely bounced over third baseman Fred Lindstrom's head.

1926 - Grover Alexander, 39, saved Game 7 and the World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, fanning Tony Lazzeri with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and pitching 2 1/3 hitless innings.

1931 - The Philadelphia Athletics rally for two runs and have two runners on base with two outs in the ninth when Cardinals reliever Bill Hallahan gets the final out for the 4-2 win in Game Seven. The A's are denied their third consecutive World Championship.

1937 - Lefty Gomez knocks in the winning run in the 4-2 clincher in Game Five against the Giants. It is his record fifth World Series win without a loss. Another record comes when the Yankees complete the Series without an error.

1945 - The Tigers score five runs in the first inning of Game Seven and rout the Cubs 9-3 behind Hal Newhouser, who strikes out 10 to win the World Series.

1951 - Hank Bauer's bases-loaded triple in Game Six propels the Yankees to a 4-3 win and their third straight Series victory.

1956 - Johnny Kucks sets down Brooklyn, 9-0, as the Yankees win the World Series in seven games. Yogi Berra hits a pair of two-run home runs and Bill Skowron hits a grand slam. It's the seventh and final time Brooklyn and the Yankees meet in the Series. In the future, it will take a jet, not a subway, to get these two teams together.

1957 - Lew Burdette's third victory of the World Series, a 5-0 decision over the New York Yankees, gave the Milwaukee Braves the championship.

1964 - Jim Bouton and Curt Simmons battle to a 1-1 tie through eight innings in Game Three. Mickey Mantle homers on Barney Schultz's first pitch in the ninth, and the Yankees win, 2-1.

1968 - Mickey Lolich won the World Series for the Detroit Tigers by defeating Bob Gibson and the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 in Game 7. It was Lolich's third win and came after the Tigers had lost three of the first four games.

1973 - Tom Seaver hurls the Mets into the World Series for the second time in four years with a 7-2 victory over the Reds in Game Five of the NLCS.

1978 - Davey Lopes collects two home runs and five RBI to lead the Dodgers to an 11-5 victory over the Yankees in the first game of the World Series.

1979 - The Orioles score five runs in the first inning of the World Series, then hang on to defeat the Pirates 5-4.

1980 - Kansas City's George Brett hit an upper deck three-run homer off relief ace Goose Gossage to give the Kansas City Royals a 4-2 victory and a three-game sweep of New York Yankees in the ALCS.

1982 - The Brewers complete their comeback from a 2-0 ALCS deficit by edging the Angels 4-3, to earn their first-ever trip to the World Series. Angels outfielder Fred Lynn bats .611 for the series and is named MVP in a losing cause.

1987 - Jeffrey Leonard homered for the fourth straight game as the San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2, tying the NLCS at two games apiece.

1990 - The Oakland Athletics swept the Boston Red Sox for the American League pennant and their third straight trip to the World Series with a 3-1 victory. MVP Dave Stewart won for the eighth straight time in head-to-head matchups with Roger Clemens, who was ejected in the second inning for arguing balls and strikes with umpire Terry Cooney.

1996 - Gary Gaetti hits a grand slam off Greg Maddux to lead the Cardinals to an 8-3 win over the Braves and a tie of the NLCS.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies (-115, 9.5)

You may know a softball diehard who plays into the deep autumn in what are known as "snowflake leagues." The National League Division Series is about to become a snowflake league.

The forecast in Denver for Game Three calls for show showers all day Saturday. If the game is played, the temperatures will dip below freezing shortly after the first pitch, with winds of 10 miles per hour making it feel like it is in the 20s.

That is a dramatic change from Game Two in Philadelphia on Thursday, when it was sunny and 65 degrees with winds of 12 miles per hour. The forecast for Denver is nowhere near ideal for baseball.

"We've played in cold weather before," Philadelphia reliever Scott Eyre told mlb.com. "You've just got to go out and make the plays. The weather is irrelevant."

Perhaps. You would have to think the Rockies are more acclimated because they live in Denver and are used to the occasional October snowstorm. They also are 44-17 at Coors Field since Jim Tracy took over as manager.

            Pick: Colorado

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals (-160, 8.5)

It's difficult to give batting advice to the best hitter in baseball, but Albert Pujols may have to expand his strike zone.

The Dodgers clearly are pitching around Pujols, who is just 1-for-6 with three walks and zero RBI through the first two games of the series. That is part of the reason the Cardinals - favored to reach the World Series - are one loss away from elimination.

Pujols is 4-for-9 lifetime with no walks or strikeouts vs. Dodgers starter Vicente Padilla, so he has been able to find something to hit when facing the righthander. But behind Pujols is Matt Holliday, who is just 1-for-6 vs. Padilla.

It has to happen soon. The Cardinals had 21 hits in the first two games but also left 21 runners on base. St. Louis is 3-for-22 with runners in scoring position in the series.

St. Louis is 2-10 since Sept. 23.

            Pick: Los Angeles

              Saturday, October 10

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The payoff pitch: Saturday's best mound matchup
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pedro Martinez (Philadelphia Phillies) vs. Jason Hammel (Colorado Rockies)

              Pedro Martinez (5-1, 3.63 ERA)

Martinez may turn 38 later this month but still knows how to pitch; he averaged nearly a strikeout per inning and tossed a pair of gems as the Phillies won his first seven starts.

However, his last two starts of the season were not good. In a combined seven innings, he gave up six runs, 13 hits - including two homers - and two walks, failing to get into the fifth inning.

Martinez has made quite a mark in the postseason. In 13 games, he is 6-2 with a 3.40 ERA and is even more dominant in the Division Series, going 4-0 with a 2.84 ERA in six games.

Since returning to the NL in 2005, Martinez had made just two starts vs. the Rockies, both in 2008. He was 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA, lasting just 8 1-3 innings. Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe have homered off him.

But Martinez bears down when he has to. With the bases empty, he allowed hitters to bat .310 with seven homers in 100 at-bats. But with runners on base, those numbers dropped to .224 and zero. With runners in scoring position, Martinez held batters to just two hits in 21 at-bats.

              Jason Hammel (10-9, 4.38 ERA)

This is the biggest game of Hammel's career. He established season bests in every category this year, his first as a full-time starter.

Hammel actually is a better pitcher on the road. His home ERA is 5.73, more than 2.5 runs higher than his road ERA.

In his only start against Philadelphia this season, Hammel got the win by scattering nine hits over 6 2-3 innings. In a relief outing in April, he was touched for two runs and five hits in 2 2-3 innings by the Phillies.

Current members of the Phillies are batting .385 (20-for-52) with four homers vs. Hammel. Shane Victorino is 3-for-5 and Raul Ibanez is 4-for-8.

Hammel has not started since Sept. 30 but did work two relief innings on the season's final day. If Jorge De La Rosa was not sidelined with a groin injury, Hammel may not have gotten this start.

Opponents batted .290 with 33 homers vs. Hammel. The numbers get bigger with runners on base (.305) and in scoring position (.295).

Anaheim Ducks at Philadelphia Flyers (-151, 5.5)

Early in the season, the Flyers are baring their teeth - literally.

Philadelphia won its first three games before dropping a 5-4 home decision to rival Pittsburgh on Thursday that was marred - or perhaps highlighted - by a scuffle between Scott Hartnell and Pittsburgh's Kris Letang, who came out of the scrum holding his hand.

According to several news outlets, the Penguins accused Hartnell of biting Letang. Hartnell was expected to speak with NHL VP Colin Campbell on Friday, ESPN.com reported.

"Ask him. He knows what he did," Letang told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

The Flyers will be looking to regain their figurative bite vs. the Ducks, whom they have beaten in five of the last six meetings.

                          Pick: Philadelphia

Montreal Canadiens at Edmonton Oilers (-130, 5.5)

There might be some tired legs on the Canadiens, who haven't slept in their own beds since the season began. They are wrapping up a five-game trip.

Meanwhile, the Oilers should be well-rested as they haven't had to leave town. They are closing out a four-game homestand to open the season.

Both teams have issues in net. The Canadiens are rotating Jaroslav Halak and Carey Price without much success and the Oilers continue to go with Nikolai Khabibulin. All three have GAAs of 3.50 or greater.

The Canadiens are 3-1 against the over; the Oilers are 3-0. And in the last nine meetings, the over is 7-1-1.

                          Pick: Over
