    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, October 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels start their series against the Red Sox, and Tiger Woods tees it up with Team United States in the Presidents Cup.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football contest on the Thursday schedule is a ranked matchup between No. 21 Nebraska and No. 24 Missouri. The Cornhuskers are coming off a 55-0 shutout of Louisiana-Lafayette, with Roy Helu rushing for 83 yards and two touchdowns. The Tigers beat Nevada 31-21 in their last game, as Blaine Gabbert connected on three scoring passes. Oddsmakers have Nebraska pegged as the 3-point road favorite for Thursday night, with a total of 53.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Jon Lester (15-8, 3.41 ERA) vs. John Lackey (11-8, 3.83 ERA) on Thursday night as the Red Sox and Angels begin their best-of-five ALDS in Los Angeles. Lefthander Lester excelled in his final tuneup for the playoffs, holding the Indians scoreless on two hits over 6 1-3 innings of work to grab the victory. Righthander Lackey went just two innings against the Rangers in his last trip to the mound, surrendering two runs on four hits. Lackey last won on September 20.

As well, both NLDS will hit Game 2 on Thursday, with Colorado at Philadelphia and St. Louis at the Dodgers. The Rockies will hand the ball to Aaron Cook (11-6, 4.16 ERA) in that first matchup, while the Phillies counter with Cole Hamels (10-11, 4.32 ERA). Out west the Dodgers will send Clayton Kershaw (8-8, 2.79 ERA) to the hill Thursday; the Cards go with Adam Wainwright (19-8, 2.63 ERA).

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up a dozen games on Thursday, including the Red Wings looking to break into the win column against the division-rival Blackhawks. Detroit lost both of their season-opening games against St. Louis in Sweden, giving up nine goals in those two contests. Chicago is 1-0-1 after splitting a pair of games with Florida in Finland over the weekend. Patrick Kane had four points in two games.

Also on the ice on Thursday night: Anaheim at Boston, the Rangers at Washington, Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, the Islanders at Ottawa, Phoenix at Buffalo, New Jersey at Tampa Bay, Atlanta at St. Louis, Colorado at Nashville, Minnesota at Los Angeles, Calgary at Edmonton, and Columbus at San Jose. The Sharks are a disappointing 1-2 to kick off the 2009/10 campaign, and they fell 6-4 to the Kings on Tuesday. Dany Heatley has five points over three games.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the 2009 Presidents Cup gets underway on Thursday, with the United States pegged as the -280 Vegas favorite on their own soil. The International team is the +240 underdog for the event at Harding Park Golf Course in San Francisco. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will lead an American team that also includes Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, and Jim Furyk. Geoff Ogilvy, Vijay Singh, and Mike Weir highlight the International team, which doesn't include Europeans.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Thursday, October 8

      Flames on fire

Calgary finally seems to be putting it together. The Flames have used their wide-open style to surge to the top of the Western Conference, winning all of their games by scoring a conference-best 13 goals with no player netting more than two. And don’t expect them to cool off anytime soon. Calgary plays Edmonton on Thursday night, and the Oilers have allowed eight goals in only two games. The Flames are +102 and the over/under is 5.5.

      Who’s No. 24?

That would be the Missouri Tigers. And why does it matter? Because Nebraska doesn’t show up on the road against ranked opponents. The Huskers have dropped seven in a row and 14 of 15 overall on the road against ranked foes. Nebraska's most recent defeat away from Lincoln to a ranked squad was a 16-15 loss to Virginia Tech earlier this season. The Tigers, however, are 3.5-point dogs Thursday night.

      Hamels getting hammered

Phillies ace Cole Hamels needs a big performance against the Rockies on Thursday to give his team a 2-0 lead. The numbers say he won’t get it. Hamels (10-11, 4.32 ERA) has allowed a staggering 13 earned runs over his past 16 1-3 innings. In his only matchup against the Rockies this year – his first start of the season – he was tagged for seven earned runs on 11 hits in just 3 2-3 innings. The Phillies are listed at -155 with the over/under line set at 8.5

        Six-pack for Thursday

Some NFL trends for Week 5

-- Raiders covered four of last 13 as a double digit underdog.

-- Chiefs covered three of their last 15 home games.

-- Eagles covered 12 of last 15 coming off a bye.

-- Browns covered two of their last ten games.

-- Bills covered one of last six as a home favorite.

-- Ravens covered nine of their last eleven home games.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Thursday's List of 13: Cleaning out a cluttered mind.........

        13) Rockies, Phillies' fans got short end of the stick, as far as their series being played Wed-Thurs afternoon; hard to take two afternoons off of work. Some Phils' players weren't happy about being left out of prime time, considering they are the world champs and all..........

        12) I know its not Derek Jeter's fault, but I swear to God there's a rule in TV that says Jeter has to be shown on camera every three minutes, and it doesn't matter whats happening at the time. Whether he goes 4 for 4 or 0 for 4, it makes no matter. You get sick of the guy after a while.

        11) Oddsmaker has posted lines for the two UFL games this week; good luck handicapping the first week in a brand-new league where the teams didn't play any preseason games. How do you not bet the underdogs?

        10) Former Saints/Rams coach Jim Haslett is coaching Florida Tuskers in the UFL; I hope Haslett writes a book someday- he coached the Saints the year Hurricane Katrina hit, then he was the interim coach last year in St Louis, which had to be a joy, now he is coaching in a new league. He must have some great stories to tell.

        9) 26 quarterbacks have won the Super Bowl. 34 have lost it, showing if you lose in your first appearance, its harder to get back to the big game.

        8) Miami Ohio QBs (Roethlisberger) are 2-0 in Super Bowls, Miami FL QBs (Kelly) are 0-4 in Super Bowls.

        7) In their last three games, Bears allowed TD drives of 92-57-73 yards on the first drive of the game, which isn't good. They miss Urlacher.

        6) St Louis Cardinals used 136 different lineups in 162 games this year.

        5) Listening to Dick Stockton call a ballgame after listening to the awful Chip Caray makes Stockton sound like the great Vin Scully.

        4) Oklahoma State's star receiver Dez Bryant is ineligible after he lied about working out, having lunch with Deion Sanders last May. Guess that violates one of the hideous NCAA's rules- they have too many of them, for sure. Bryant will appeal the ruling next week.

        3) Someone has to explain to me how Jason Witten was blocking on last two plays at Denver Sunday, instead of being out on the pattern? They don't have a second tight end who can block? Witten is Romo's favorite receiver, the guy he looks to when things break down. Poor planning to have him as a blocker on the game's most important plays.

        1) Its going to be a long winter for the Detroit Tigers and their fans; it is not a young team in Detroit-- to collapse in September may send them down the same path the Mets are on, which isn't a good one.

          Write-up

          Thursday, October 8

World champ Phillies didn't have to use bullpen in easy 5-1 Game 1 win. Hamels is 0-2, 7.02 in his last three starts. His first '09 start was April 10 here vs Rockies- he gave up seven runs in 3.2 IP. Cook is 1-0, 0.69 in his last couple starts; he was 0-1, 4.91 in couple starts vs Phillies this season. Five of his last seven starts stayed under the total, as did eight of last ten Hamels starts.

Kershaw shut St Louis out for eight innings July 29, then only pitched 3.2 innings (97 PT) against Redbirds three weeks later (St Louis won 3-2 in both games). He is 0-1, 2.45 in his last five starts- under is 6-1-1 in his last eight starts. Wainwright has 2.57 RA in his last five starts, with last three going over the total- he gave up two runs in 15 IP vs LA this year.

Lackey is 1-1, 6.97 in his last four starts; he lost 4-1 in Fenway Sept 15, allowing three runs in 7.2 IP. Lester is 5-1, 2.52 in his last six starts- he was 1-0, 2.37 in three starts against them LY. Five of his last six road starts went over the total. Angels have recent history of folding against Red Sox in playoffs.

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Payoff pitch: Thursday’s best mound matchup
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Wainwright vs. Kershaw

Adam Wainwright (19-8, 2.63 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

Wainwright closed out the regular season on a bit of a sour note. He had a chance to become the Major’s only 20-game winner, but fell short in a six-inning, three-run outing.

The Brewers won the game but Wainwright’s stuff was impressive as always. He sat down eight Milwaukee batters against just two walks.

And of course we can’t forget how instrumental the hurler was for the Cards during their postseason run in 2006. Wainwright didn’t allow a run in nine different playoff appearances as St. Louis’ rookie closer.

The Cards won the World Series that year in large part because Wainwright was able to close the door each time in the ninth inning.

Still, Cards supporters have noticed their team’s 1-3 record over the big righty’s last four starts.

Clayton Kershaw (8-8, 2.79 ERA), Los Angeles Dodgers

The Dodgers star prospect didn’t suffer any type of sophomore slump. He was the team’s most consistent starting arm throughout the season. That said, you’ve got to figure starting a 21-year-old kid in Game 2 of a best-of-five playoff series is giving Dodgers manager Joe Torre the heebie-jeebies.

Kershaw hasn’t won a game since mid-July and he’s only a few appearances removed from a stint on the 15-day DL. He’s got great stuff and he only surrendered two runs in 12 innings since coming back from injury.

If the lefty does struggle, Torre has some veteran long relief options in his bullpen.

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels (+100, 8)

Starting the playoffs on the right foot is a task the Los Angeles Angels have avoided in the last decade. The Halos are 0-4 in Game 1 of an ALDS going back to 2002, when they overcame an opening loss to roll all the way to a World Series title. They’ve been outscored 29-11 in Game 1s over this span.

In 2002, Los Angeles fell 8-5 to Roger Clemens and the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS. After missing the playoffs in 2003, the Angels dropped the 2004 postseason opener, 9-3, to Curt Schilling and the Boston Red Sox and were eventually swept in three games. The following year, they were stumped 4-2 by Mike Mussina and the Yankees at home in Game 1 of the ALDS.

The last two seasons, Los Angeles has lost both opening games of the Divisional Series to the Red Sox. And both times, Thursday’s starter John Lackey has been on the mound. In 2007, Lackey went six inning and gave up four runs – getting outpitched by Boston’s Josh Beckett, who put up a complete-game shutout.

Last year, Lackey pitched just under seven innings, giving up two earned runs and one home run. But again he was outdone by the Red Sox’s starter, Jon Lester, who went seven shutout innings and gave Boston its first win of a four-game series victory.

Lackey and Lester face off again in Anaheim Thursday night. And if history has anything to say about it, Boston should be up 1-0 heading into Friday’s Game 2.

              Pick: Boston -110

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals (-170, 6)

Get used to seeing the Capitals carrying six-goal totals this season. Washington is carrying over its offensive dominance from a year ago.

The Caps have found the back of the net 15 times in three games, but the stat that has over bettors drooling is the 11 goals the club has allowed.

Coach Bruce Boudreau thought his team took too many bad penalties in his club’s 5-6 OT loss to the Flyers on Wednesday, but starting goaltender Semyon Varlamov didn’t completely escape the bench boss’ wrath.

“I thought there were some soft goals,” Brodreau told the Washington Post after the game. “Varly has to be mentally tougher to play. One thing that’s reared its ugly head right now is they score in bunches on him. I think he gets down on himself, and we have to get him out of that.”

You bet you do Brodreau. Otherwise it’s red light Theodore to the rescue.
