Phoenix Coyotes at Pittsburgh Penguins

Former champions always say that the toughest thing about repeating is that you get every team’s best game. Everyone wants to beat the defending champs.

With that in mind, the Pens are making sure that the rest of the league knows you won’t be able to push them around this season.

Pittsburgh added some grit with the arrival of Mike Rupp and Jay McKee. Both players dropped the gloves in the win over the Islanders on Saturday, which was welcomed by their teammates.

“We want to be tough and bring that physical presence,” team captain Sidney Crosby told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. “It shows they’re sticking up for guys. It’s important.”

Phoenix lit the lamp six times in its first game against the Kings. Expect a high-scoring affair Wednesday between the Pens and Coyotes.

Montreal Canadiens at Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver fans were excited about their team’s offseason push to become more of an offensive-minded club. But the results from the first three games have not been encouraging.

The Canucks have been outscored 13-6 over the first week of the new campaign. Monday’s 5-3 setback to Blue Jackets was especially troubling. All-Star goalie Roberto Luongo was pulled after allowing four goals on the last four shots he faced. It was so bad the home fans actually cheered when Luongo was mercifully yanked.

After the game the netminder pointed out to the defensive breakdowns as part of the reason for his early struggles.

“Sometimes we get caught with guys going to the net, all three of them,” Luongo told the Vancouver Province. “It’s just one of those things where, from myself on out, we’re not doing everything we need to be doing with our systems. And it’s costing us goals.”

Vancouver’s winless streak should be snapped tonight. Montreal is still coping from the loss of defenseman Andrei Markov and starting goalie Carey Price is due for a poor performance.

Hoping to bolster their defense which lost star defenseman Andrei Markov, the Canadiens signed free agent Marc-Andre Bergeron on Tuesday.

He’ll replace Russian rookie Sergei Shirokov, who was minus-4 with no points in three games. Shirokov had led the Canucks in preseason scoring with seven points in four games. The Canucks have lost six games in a row going back to last season. Vancouver has defeated Montreal the past seven times at home. The Canucks are 16-5 in their last 21 home contests. Vancouver will play just once in the next eight days following this game.

1. Quick Hits

The Minnesota Twins win a dramatic one game playoff against the Detroit Tigers, 6-5 in 12 innings, to win the AL Central. The Twins with a $65-million payroll will now face the Yankees. ($201-million.)

2. The Second Season

So here we go. The baseball playoffs begin today with 3 games. And Top 5 readers are already bitching. The first round is best of 5 and Pat R. hates it. He wants a best of 7.
No question the first round is a crapshoot, remember the midges attacking Joba Chamberlain in Cleveland?
And Jay S. like many older readers, fondly remembers afternoon World Series games. He says baseball has lost today's kids because of the late postseason games.
If it's any consolation, World Series games will start earlier this year, just before 8pm Eastern time. That means kids will get to watch a whole extra inning before beddy bye.

3. Thanks Boss

A feel a twinge of sadness, again, about George Steinbrenner. Did you see the picture of him at the Yankee game Sunday in St. Pete? He didn't look great. And then he "issues" a press release to basically say what he always says. That the Yankees have the greatest fans in the world, and they deserve another world championship. Did he really write that release? Or did Rubenstein just recycle it from just about any year? I truly miss the old bombastic George. He was irritating as hell, but he brought a sense of urgency and energy that is clearly lacking these days.

4. Improve the Rush-ing Game

Talk about a layup. Rush Limbaugh wants to be part of a group buying the St. Louis Rams. He wants to institute his radical right wing offense.

5. Possible/Not Possible

Let's play a new game, possible/not possible. The Baltimore Ravens coach says Patriots quarterback Tom Brady gets preferential treatment from the refs. Possible/not possible?
The Pakistani national cricket team deliberately lost matches so that India wouldn't advance in a tournament. Possible/not possible?
A-Rod will finally wake up and have a decent October with the Yankees. Possible/not possible?
I'll vote "probable" to all 3. Your turn.

Jimenez 2-1, 2.70 in his last three starts- 10 of his last 12 starts stayed under the total. He didn't pitch against Phillies this year, he allowed seven runs in four IP in a start here early LY. Lee beat Colorado here 3-1 Aug 6 (one run in seven IP).

Twins are 17-4 in last 21 games, but closer Nathan pitched 1.2 innings in extra inning win last night; Minnesota lost its last eight games in Bronx. Duensing is 4-1, 2.75 in his last seven starts, but has 6.20 RA in his four road starts this season. We're having all kiinds of probems! PM started this thread, last night, and we can't find it anywhere this morning!

Also, the graphics buttons, in "advanced reply" have stopped working. I've been doing it all by hand but may have to dispense with that as the stuff starts coming in.

Avatars and other add-ons are not showing either.

Wait... avatars are showing after coming back from that last edit!
