          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Middle Tennessee State at Troy
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders at Troy Trojans

The Sun Belt Conference takes center stage Tuesday night when defending champion Troy (2-2, 1-0) hosts Middle Tennessee State (3-1, 1-0) at the Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium.

Troy opened a 5.5-point favorite and has moved to –6.5 since.

          Weather

Warm temperatures in the low 70s are expected at kickoff under cloudy skies with a 50 percent chance of thunderstorms. South winds around 5 mph.

          Tale of the tape

Both teams are tied at 1-0 in the conference standings, one win behind league leader Louisiana Monroe (2-0).

After opening the 2009 season with back-to-back losses at Bowling Green and at Florida, the Trojans have bounced back with a pair of wins, including a 30-27 upset at Arkansas State. They’ve also put up over 500 yards of offense in each of the last two games.

Troy has won the conference title three straight years, going 6-1 in the Sun Belt each season.

The Blue Raiders have won and covered each of their last three games and are now 3-1 straight up and against the spread on the season following a 23-point loss at Clemson to start the campaign.

MTSU is off to its best start since going 5-0 in 2001 when it earned a share of the Sun Belt title with North Texas. The Blue Raiders have a plus-five turnover margin, and have forced 13 turnovers.

          Who’s who

Troy QB Levi Brown is the leading contender for Sun Belt Player of the Year honors. The senior signal-caller has thrown for 1,097 yards, five touchdowns and completed 63.7 percent of his passes. Brown is a big quarterback with a big arm.

Brown’s main target is junior college transfer Tebiarus Gill. He leads Troy with 23 receptions and two touchdowns has been an immediate impact player.

Middle Tennessee QB Dwight Dasher has thrown for more 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions. The junior has also rushed for more than 250 yards and three touchdowns.

The Trojans have six sacks and 26 quarterback hurries in four games. Opponents have just nine quarterback hurries.

          No offense taken

The Red Raiders picked up offensive coordinator Tony Frankiln this season after his brief tenure with Auburn last year.

Franklin’s spread offense helped power Troy to conference titles during his stay with the Trojans in 2006 and 2007.

          Coaches speak

Troy coach Larry Blakeney realizes the importance of tonight’s game. "It's a conference game from a national showcase. It will be fun to watch if you've got nothing to do with either team."

MTSU coach Rick Stockstill likes the way his team has played. "We've played four emotion games. I wish we had played better at Clemson, but I'm real proud of the way we've played the last three weeks."

          The history book says

Troy has won and covered each of the last three meetings in this series.

The Trojans are 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS on weekdays during the regular season since joining the Sun Belt in 2004

The Blue Raiders are 4-7 SU and 4-5 ATS on weekdays during the regular season including 1-4 SU and 0-4 ATS of late.

Middle Tennessee State at Troy [ESPN 2 | 8:00 PM ET]

Middle Tennessee State: Middle Tennessee State has won and covered its last three games after an opening 23-point loss to Clemson, but is getting little respect on the betting line. Early money has been on favored Troy in this Sun Belt Conference matchup. Troy opened 5 ½-point favorites. The Blue Raiders haven’t started this well since going 5-0 in 2001. Middle Tennessee State has forced 13 turnovers. Quarterback Dwight Dasher has thrown for more than 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns, while being intercepted five times. The junior also has rushed for more than 250 yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground. The Blue Raiders have failed to cover the past three times they’ve met Troy, the defending Sun Belt champions. Middle Tennessee State has failed to cover the past four times when playing a regular-season game during a weekday. The Blue Raiders have covered in 12 of their past 15 October games.

Middle Tennessee State is 2-8-1 in its last 11 Sun Belt games.
The Over has cashed the past 6 times the Blue Raiders have been a road underdog.

Key Injuries - Running back Phillip Tanner (knee) is out.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Troy (-6.5): Troy opened the season with back-to-back road losses against Bowling Green and Florida. The Trojans still may be a little undervalued because of those defeats, although they’ve rebounded to even their record at 2-2 by knocking off Alabama-Birmingham 27-14 and Arkansas State on the road 30-27 as a short underdog. The Trojans have put up more than 500 yards in offense during each of those victories. Troy has been the class of the Sun Belt winning the league title each of the last three seasons. Quarterback Levi Brown is a top contender for conference player of the year honors. The senior has thrown for 1,097 yards and five touchdowns, while completing 63.7 percent of his passes. Brown’s main target is Tebiarus Gill, who leads the Trojans with 23 receptions. Since joining the Sun Belt in 2004, Troy is 7-1 straight-up and 6-2 against the spread when playing on a weekday.

The Trojans have covered 7 of their last 10 home games.
The Under is 10-4 in Troy’s past 14 Sun Belt games.

              Key Injuries - None.

                Game of the day: Thursday
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nebraska Cornhuskers at Missouri Tigers (+3, 54)

                Line Movement

Missouri was catching a point in some places and two points in most shops when this number came out Sunday. The line has been driven up to three points across the board and that is where it will likely stay until we get closer to game time.

The total opened at 54.5 to 55 and has been brought down to 54 and in some cases 53.5, so the early money is on a low scoring game.

                Injuries

There are no significant injuries to report on either side.

                Weather

It looks like a perfect fall night in the Midwest with mostly clear skies and a temperature of 63 degrees with hardly any wind.

                Return of the Blackshirts

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini has brought some fight back into the once-proud Huskers defense. They allowed 37.9 ppg and 476.8 ypg in 2007, which were both school records and neither of which they were proud of. In 2008, they dropped those averages to 28.5 ppg and 349.9 ypg, which were certainly not great but it was an improvement.

Through four games in 2009, the “Blackshirts” are back as they have allowed only 7.0 ppg and 285.5 ypg, first and 21st respectively in the country. Playing three teams from the Sun Belt has had a lot to do with this but it held Virginia Tech to 16 points, its lowest output of the season, and only 278 total yards.

A strong defensive performance on the road against one of the league's best offenses would at least be a sign that the Huskers are returning to their glory days, or at least no longer embarrassing themselves.

                Chase who?

If someone was asked who would be leading the Big 12 in passing efficiency a quarter of the way into the season, the answer would probably have a last name of Bradford, McCoy, Robinson or even Reesing.

                Not Gabbert.

Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert is leading the conference in pass efficiency, throwing for 11 touchdowns and no interceptions with 1,161 yards through four games. Where did he come from?

He is actually the highest recruit for a quarterback Missouri has even landed and ironically, he originally committed to Nebraska but backed out after the firing of head coach Bill Callahan.

“I’m looking forward to playing them like all of my games,” Gabbert told reporters. “But the fact it’s Nebraska doesn’t make it any bigger or more important for me.”

                New king of the mountain

Nebraska used to rule this series, defeating the Tigers 24 straight times from 1979 to 2002 by an average of more than three touchdowns. Since then, it has been the complete opposite as Missouri has won four of the last six meetings including three straight at home.

This also includes a Tigers win in Lincoln last season by a score of 52-17, which was their first win at Memorial Stadium since 1978. The Huskers did not take it well and coach Pelini was “embarrassed” and apologized “to the state of Nebraska [and] everyone associated with Nebraska football.”

That makes 93 points allowed to the Tigers over the last two seasons so Nebraska is really hoping the early success of the defense is no fluke. If so, another apology may be in store after Thursday.

                Rushing dogs no more

While the passing game has been efficient, the Tigers’ running game has been a huge disappointment.

A year ago, they averaged 5.2 ypc including 5.8 ypg in its four non-conference games. But this year, it's down to 3.8 ypc. Even though they are averaging eight more carries per game, they are averaging 143 ypg which is 51 yards less per game than at this point last season.

Missouri has changed its blocking schemes this season, going to a zone system, and Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel said the transition is taking longer than they had expected. Now that conference action is underway, it had better come around quickly.

Conversely, the Huskers averaged 155.5 ypg on 4.8 ypc during non-conference action last season. Through four games this year, they have averaged 183.8 ypg on 5.7 ypc.

                Bottom Line

Both teams have been cashing tickets this season with Nebraska a perfect 4-0 ATS and Missouri not far behind at 3-1 ATS. Both teams have kept the scoring down more than expected as they come in with identical 3-1 records to the Under.

The Huskers are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games while the Tigers are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

The home team has covered six of the last seven meetings in this series.

Nebraska at Missouri [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Nebraska (-3.5, O/U 53): The Cornhuskers are getting tremendous respect from the linemakers and early bettors considering they lost 52-17 to then No. 4 Missouri last Oct. 4, their most lopsided home defeat since 1955. The Tigers were minus 10 ½ in that matchup and led 52-10 in the third quarter before letting up. Now Nebraska has climbed above a field goal favorite. The 21st-ranked Cornhuskers are 3-1 having beaten Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State and Lafayette by a combined margin of 142-12. Nebraska’s lone defeat came at then No. 13 Virginia Tech, 16-15, when the Hokies scored with 21 seconds left on a miraculous play. Nebraska is ninth in the country averaging 39.3 points, but a key question is how well can quarterback Zac Lee pass? The Cornhuskers are first in scoring defense holding foes to seven points a game. Nebraska, though, is 6-13 against the spread following a bye week.

The Under is 8-2 in the Cornhuskers’ last 10 games on grass.
Nebraska is 7-1 to the under in its last eight October contests.

Key Injuries - Safety Rickey Thenarse (knee) is doubtful.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 28

Missouri: Missouri embarrassed Nebraska last year, but the Tigers have lost 26 of the past 30 games in this series. The 24th-ranked Tigers open Big 12 play having gone 4-0 with victories against Illinois (37-9), Bowling Green (27-20), Furman (52-12) and Nevada (31-21). The combined record of these opponents is 6-12, with Football Championship Subdivision team Furman responsible for three of those six victories. Sophomore quarterback Blaine Gabbert has stepped up to throw for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions. The Tigers are averaging 36.8 points, 15th-best in the country. Missouri has won 23 of its last 27 home contests. The Tigers have won three straight against Nebraska when playing at Faurot Field. The home team has covered in six of the last seven in the series. The Tigers, however, are 3-10 against the spread when hosting a team off a straight-up and against the spread road win.

The Over is 11-4 in Missouri’s last 15 games as an underdog.
The Tigers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games when getting 3 ½ to 10 points.

                    Key Injuries - None.

Louisiana Tech at Nevada [ESPN | 9:00 PM ET]

Louisiana Tech: Louisiana Tech has won its last two games, but there has been heavy line movement against the Bulldogs. The line has gone from Nevada minus 7 ½ to as high as minus 11. Louisiana Tech looked good in its last game, beating Hawaii 27-6 at home last Wednesday rushing for 352 yards. The Bulldogs, though, are 14-37-1 against the spread in their last 52 road games. They have lost the past four times to Nevada by four, 39, 42 and 10 points. The Bulldogs lost 49-10 in their last visit to Reno two years ago. The Bulldogs have just three touchdown passing in their past four games. Houston Tuminello is the only wide receiver to catch a touchdown pass and he quit the team on Tuesday. Daniel Porter does give Louisiana Tech a good running threat and Phillip Livas could be the Western Athletic Conference’s most dangerous punt returner.

The Under is 7-1 in the Bulldogs’ last eight games as a road ‘dog.
Louisiana Tech is 5-24 ATS the past 29 times it has been a road ‘dog.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Houston Tuminello quit the team.

Nevada (-10.5, O/U 58): After opening the season with three straight defeats, Nevada may gave gotten it swagger back with a crushing 63-38 home win last Saturday against UNLV. The Wolf Pack rushed for a school-record 559 yards. Auburn and Navy put up 301 and 290 rushing yards, respectively, against Louisiana Tech earlier this season. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has started slow, but is the reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for 397 yards last year against Louisiana Tech. Turnovers have really hurt the Wolf Pack this season. Nevada has a negative 12 turnover ratio. Nevada has been at its best under Chris Ault as a home favorite covering 16 of the past 19 times in that role. The Wolf Pack are 12-2 the last 14 times they’ve laid five points or more at Mackay Stadium. Nevada is 22-9 against the number in its last 31 home contests.

The Over is 6-2 the past eight times these two teams have met.
The Wolf Pack is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games.

Key Injuries - Running back Vai Taua (elbow) is probable.

Florida Gators at LSU Tigers [CBS | 8:00 PM ET]

Florida (-8, O/U 45.5): The big questions are will star quarterback Tim Tebow play and will he be at full strength after suffering a concussion? Sophomore John Brantley would make his first college start if Tebow can’t go. Tebow has the third-highest passer rating in the country. He’s accounted for 11 touchdowns. Brantley has looked good during his brief time spelling Tebow, completing 73.3 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Florida is riding a 14-game winning streak. The top-ranked Gators are 17th in the nation in stopping the run, holding foes to 92.8 yards per game. Florida leads the country in rushing averaging 307.5 yards behind Tebow and sophomore running backs Jeffery Demps and Chris Rainey. Florida routed LSU at home last season, 51-21. The Gators have covered 11 of their last 12 road contests. They are 9-0 against the spread the past nine times they’ve been road chalk.

The Gators are 17-4 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
The Over is 11-5 in Florida’s last 16 SEC matchups.

Quarterback Tim Tebow (concussion) is questionable.
Offensive lineman Marcus Gilbert (elbow) is questionable.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 27

LSU: LSU ranks a dismal 99th in total offense, averaging 321.6 yards per game. But the Tigers are yielding just 14.8 points per contest, which ranks them 16th. LSU has won 32 consecutive Saturday night games at Tiger Stadium. The winner of this matchup has gone on to win the last three BCS championships. The fourth-ranked Tigers, undefeated in five games, dealt Florida a 28-24 loss when they hosted them in 2007. The Tigers trailed by 10 points in the fourth-quarter in that matchup. LSU, however, is just 3-12-1 against the spread in its last 16 home contests. All-SEC tailback Charles Scott had his best game of the season in LSU’s 20-13 road win last week against Georgia. Scott ran for 95 yards and scored two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 46 seconds left. It was Scott’s first two touchdowns of the season.

The Under has cashed 12 of the last 17 times LSU has been an underdog.
The Under is 10-3 the past 13 times these teams have met.

Kedy Injuries - Guard Lyle Hitt is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 19 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Michigan Wolverines at Iowa Hawkeyes [ABC | 8:00 PM ET]

Michigan: This will be the Wolverines’ second road game and first time traveling outside the state of Michigan. The Wolverines have lost five of their last six away games. The Wolverines suffered their first loss in five games last week falling to Michigan State in East Lansing in overtime, 26-20. That loss cost Michigan a berth in the Top 25. Those looking to play against Michigan in this matchup can point out that the Wolverines are just a couple of fluke bounces away from having a bad season. The Wolverines defeated Indiana and Notre Dame in Ann Arbor by a combined seven points. Michigan’s young offense is led by freshman quarterback Tate Forcier. Michigan State held the Wolverines to a season-low 251 yards. Michigan has failed to cover during its last five games in October. The Wolverines have failed to cover in their last four Big Ten games.

Michigan is 5-12 ATS in its last 17 games.
The Over has cashed 7 of the last nine times Michigan has been an underdog.

                            Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 20 (Side of the Day)

Iowa (-8, O/U 47.5): The Hawkeyes are 5-0 for the first time since 1995. Dating back to last year, Iowa has won nine in a row. The Hawkeyes have been outstanding defensively, holding foes to 13.4 points per game. That’s 10th-best in the nation. They are fourth nationally in pass efficiency defense. Iowa has forced 14 turnovers and not allowed a rushing touchdown in 33 quarters going back to last season. Iowa’s offense has taken some criticism for the team’s narrow victories against Northern Iowa (17-16) and Arkansas State (24-21). But quarterback Ricky Stanzi could start putting up good numbers with the 12th-ranked Hawkeyes getting healthy on offense. Returning are star left tackle Bryan Bulaga along with wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos and tight end Tony Moeaki. Stanzi had his most productive game last week completing 18 of 26 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns against Arkansas State.

Iowa is 10-2 ATS in its last 12.
The Under is 10-4 in the Hawkeyes’ last 14 games when facing a team with a winning record.

                            Key Injuries - None.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 28

                              Game of the day: Saturday
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michigan Wolverines at Iowa Hawkeyes (-8, 47)

The stakes are high for the hometown Iowa Hawkeyes (5-0) this Saturday night, when they play host to the Michigan Wolverines (4-1) at Kinnick Stadium (8 p.m. ET ABC).

It’s homecoming this weekend in Iowa and the undefeated Hawkeyes will look to preserve their nine game winning streak, which is the second longest next to Florida.

                              Trouble with the Spread

Iowa hasn't played the Wolverines since 2006 but this, of course, isn't the same type of team. Head coach Rich Rodriguez has brought the spread offense to Michigan and defending this seems to be the one weak point in this stellar Hawkeye defense.

Their two toughest games this year have oddly enough been against the two least talented teams on their schedule, Northern Iowa and Arkansas State. But both teams run a similar type of offense to Michigan.

Arkansas State's QB Corey Leonard is a bit like fleet footed Michigan QB Tate Forcier and he gave the 10th-ranked Iowa defense trouble. He hasn't been much of rushing threat this year, having only 38 yards on the ground, but Iowa still focused on containing the mobile QB and he was able to generate modest gains through the air by using cross and underneath routes.

Iowa will go into the Michigan game with the same contain mentality, but it will deal with a much more talented squad. Last week, Michigan State experienced success in its 26-20 OT victory over the Wolverines, limiting them to 28 yards on the ground. They were previously averaging 240.25 yards in rushing per game.

But the Iowa D shouldn't expect the same offensive gameplan from Michigan. The running back duo of Brandon Minor and Carlos Brown (who is questionable as of press time) had only a combined 10 rushing attempts against Michigan State.

The offensive key for Michigan will be to keep the tough Iowa D honest and Minor will need to have a big game to keep this contest close. The talented senior has only topped the 100 yard mark once this year, in what was arguably Michigan’s best game of the season versus Notre Dame. Iowa, however, has not given up a rushing TD in 33 quarters.

This is the toughest defense that Michigan has faced, but if Rodriquez and offensive coordinator Calvin Magee can keep the Hawkeyes honest, it will open up the game for Forcier to lead a possible upset.

                              Good Ricky vs. Bad Ricky

Iowa has won nine straight games, but it hasn't been pretty and that stems from the performance of their QB. Ricky Stanzi has been two-faced his entire career, looking like a Division-three QB in some parts of the game and then putting in a Super-Bowl performance in the other. Last week was no exception, having thrown three deep TD passes all over 30 yards, but then following that up with two sloppy interceptions, one a 75-yard return for a TD.

If Iowa is to continue its streak, Stanzi will have to be more consistent as the Hawkeyes can't rely on their defense to bail them out of games for the entire season.

Statistically, Michigan's D doesn't seem great ranked 90th and having given up 392 yards per game, but the team seems to be adjusting to the 3-4 defense. The Wolverines’ faults from last week's game came down to fundamentals as opposed to scheme, as their performance against Michigan State game was littered with missed tackles and defensive miscues.

But despite all this, they kept a potent Spartan offense to a seaso- low 26 points. The key for the Hawkeye offense is in their offensive line as they will be up against a solid front led by future NFLer Brandon Graham.

The freshman running back duo of Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher has kept opposing defenses honest averaging a combined 125.6 yards per game and they will need to continue that success to open the passing game up for Stanzi.

With star TE Tony Moeaki (questionable for Saturday) missing for most of the year, Iowa has not had to key in on any one receiver. This could work in their favor as Michigan's secondary as a whole has been vulnerable, giving up 239 yards per game.

                              The Line and Weather

The spread for the game opened up at -8 in favor of Iowa and has stayed there at most books. During their winning streak, the Hawkeyes are 6-2 ATS and have only failed to cover the spread when dealing with double digits.

As 8-point underdogs, this is the largest number that Michigan has had to deal with in 2009. The Wolverines are 3-2 ATS this year with both ATS losses coming against Big Ten teams.

The total is in between 47 and 48. Iowa's team is characterized by its defense and it has shown in its over/under record going 1-2-1 this year. The last meeting between these two teams in 2006 went under the 44 point total by 26 points, with Michigan winning 20-6.

On paper, Iowa has the ability to blow out this game. The Hawkeyes have been inconsistent versus the spread but they seem to be a team that plays to their competition as characterized by their huge 21-10 road win on primetime against Penn State.

Michigan seems to be back on the right track though after having suffered a 3-9 season last year. Michigan leads the series 40-10-4. Moneyline for the underdogs presents decent value at +255.

Historically homecoming serves no advantage with Iowa having loss its last two homecoming games against Northwestern last year and Indiana in 2007. Iowa was favored by more than a touchdown in both games.

It’s expected to be a cold and rainy day in Iowa City with temperatures in the mid 30s with a 50 percent chance of precipitation.

All signs point to a stereotypical Big Ten defensive battle, but with a new Michigan offensive system in place and an unpredictable Iowa QB, this key conference matchup could produce unexpected results.
