    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, October 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts take on the Seahawks, the Giants meet the Chiefs, and Major League Baseball closes out its regular-season slate.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Manning brothers will both be trying to run their respective teams' records to 4-0 in early NFL action on Sunday, as Indianapolis (-10) hosts Seattle and the Giants (-9) play on the road in Kansas City. The Colts (2-1 against-the-spread) pounded the Cardinals 31-10 last week, with Peyton throwing for 379 yards and four touchdowns. The Giants (2-0-1 ATS) are coming off a 24-0 blanking of the Buccaneers, with Eli throwing for just 161 yards but two TD strikes in that victory.

The other 1pm ET NFL matchups for Sunday: Detroit at Chicago (-10), Oakland at Houston (-9), Tennessee (-3) at Jacksonville, Baltimore at New England (-1.5), Tampa Bay at Washington (-7), and Cincinnati (-5.5) at Cleveland. The winless Browns will bench Brady Quinn in favor of Derek Anderson for Sunday's contest.

At 4pm ET on the gridiron it'll be Buffalo (-2) at Miami, Dallas (-3) at Denver, St. Louis at San Francisco (-9.5), and the Jets at New Orleans (-7), in a matchup of unbeaten teams. The Sunday Night Football broadcast will then have San Diego at Pittsburgh (-6.5). The Chargers improved to 2-1 (1-2 ATS) with a 23-13 win over the Dolphins last time out. The Steelers fell to 1-2 (0-3 ATS) with a 23-20 loss to the Bengals last week; Pittsburgh led 20-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Twins and Tigers will continue to battle for the AL Central crown on different fronts on Sunday, with Minnesota hosting Kansas City and Detroit hosting the White Sox. The Twins, who pulled into a tie for top spot in the division on Saturday, will send Carl Pavano (13-12, 5.07 ERA) to the mound to take on the Royals' Luke Hochevar (7-12, 6.24 ERA). In Detroit the pitching matchup will be Justin Verlander (18-9, 3.45 ERA) vs. John Danks (13-10, 3.69 ERA). Should the teams end up even in the standings the tiebreaker would be played on Tuesday in Minnesota.

Elsewhere on the last day of the MLB regular season it'll be Toronto at Baltimore, Cleveland at Boston, the Yankees at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Oakland, Houston at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Florida at Philadelphia, Washington at Atlanta, Milwaukee at St. Louis, Arizona at the Cubs, San Francisco at San Diego, Colorado at the Dodgers, and Texas at Seattle. It's Scott Feldman (17-7, 4.02 ERA) vs. Felix Hernandez (18-5, 2.48 ERA) in that last matchup.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's Game 3 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday afternoon, with Phoenix at Indiana. The Fever tied the best-of-five series at 1-1 with a 93-84 road win on Thursday night. Tamika Catchings picked up 19 points and 11 assists in that victory for Indiana. Diana Taurasi poured in a game-high 20 points in the loss for Phoenix.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Chase for the Sprint Cup continues on Sunday afternoon with the Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway. Jimmie Johnson won last week's Sprint Cup event at Dover International Speedway, and he's been pegged as the 4/1 Vegas favorite to get back-to-back titles on Sunday. Mark Martin, who won the Chase opener at New Hampshire Motor Speedway two weeks ago, is next at 6/1 odds. Jeff Gordon (15/2) and Tony Stewart (10/1) follow them on this week's odds list.

Finally, the drivers of Formula 1 will continue their Asian swing on Sunday in the Japanese Grand Prix. Brawn-Mercedes teammates Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello are 1-2 in the drivers championship heading into the third-last race of the season, with Button holding an 84-69 advantage. Lewis Hamilton won in Singapore last time out, and Fernando Alonso grabbed the win in Japan last year.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, October 4

      Browns are black and blue

The Cleveland Browns announced this week that quarterback Derek Anderson would start under center against Cincinnati. But it remains to be seen who will line up behind him. Rookie running back James Davis was placed on the IR Saturday and starter Jamal Lewis is listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury. Running back Chris Jennings was just signed off the practice squad and should backup Jerome Harrison. Cincinnati is a 6-point favorite and the total is 37.5.

      Backfield bonanza

The Browns aren’t the only team with running back woes. The defending champion Pittsburgh Steelers are expecting to be without starting running back Willie Parker against the San Diego Chargers Sunday night. Last week, former first-round pick Rashard Mendenhall was benched for not knowing the playbook, but is now expected to take the majority of the carries. Hope he studies up. Pittsburgh is a 6.5-point favorite and the total is 42.5.

      Baby bears

The Arizona Diamondbacks are out of the playoff chase, but they are determined to go out with a bang against the Cubs. The teams have combined to go over the total in four of their five meetings this season, with three being victories by the Diamondbacks of at least five runs. Arizona is listed at +184.

      No ordinary Joe

Angels pitcher Joe Saunders is ready for the postseason. Saunders (15-7, 4.62 ERA) is undefeated in his past seven starts, compiling a record of 6-0 and allowing three or fewer earned runs in each outing. For Saunders to finish strong against the A's, he has to keep the ball in the yard. Before the All-Star break, he gave up 21 home runs in 18 starts. Since then, he’s allowed just eight gopher balls in his past 12 outings. The Angels are posted at -129 with a total of 9 runs.

      Starter by committee

Opposing Saunders for the Athletics will be … the team’s bullpen. Oakland announced it would not use a starter for the final game of the year, but instead either Brad Kilby or Jerry Blevins will get the nod, followed by various relievers. The approach to pitching will be similar to what is done in an All-Star game, minus the talent. Oakland is posted at +121.

      No rest for the weary

While Oakland is finding ways to take it easy on its pitchers as the season winds down, Pittsburgh is pushing its hurlers on short rest. Jeff Karstens (4-5, 5.37 ERA) will take the mound on just three-days rest against the Reds Sunday, replacing the injured Kevin Hart. Karstens gave up only two runs over five innings against the Cubs in his most recent start. Pittsburgh is listed at +166 with 8.5-run total.

      Catchings is key

Tamika Catchings will decide which team wins the WNBA Finals. Catchings fouled out with about three minutes left in an overtime loss to the Mercury in Game 1. But in Game 2, she was on the court till the final buzzer, finishing with 19 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in a nine-point Fever win. With the series shifting to Indiana Sunday, the Defensive Player of the Year should shine on her home floor. The Fever are three-point favorites with the over/under set at 179.

      On the Mark

Mark Martin continues to prove age is just a number. The 50 year old claimed his career-best-tying seventh pole of the season and will start at the front of the field at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway Sunday. Martin also leads the Chase for the Sprint Cup in points and is a good value at +500 to win.

      QUOTE OF THE DAY

"When you put him on the field in a one-on-one workout session he'll make every throw for you. But when it comes down to making things happen in the heat of the battle and rallying the troops around you and making a case for the team, that's where maybe things aren't where they need to be."

Quarterback Jeff Garcia on former Raiders teammate JaMarcus Russell, who has an NFL-worst 39.8 passer rating

        Six-pack for Sunday

More NFL trends for Week 4........

-- Jaguars covered two of their last eight divisional games.

-- Chiefs covered three of last 14 home games.

-- Saints covered five of last six against AFC opponents.

-- Rams covered three of last 15 divisional games.

-- Broncos are 3-9 vs spread in last 12 games against the NFC.

-- Bears are 3-9-1 in last thirteen games as a home favorite.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

        13) Best finish of day was in Muncie, IN, where Ball State scored with 0:42 left, went for two and got it, taking a 30-29 lead, but Toledo threw a 51-yard TD pass just fifteen seconds later, and won the game 37-30.

        12) Miami upset Oklahoma 21-20, handing banged-up Sooners a second loss in this young season. Tough opponent for Jones' first road start as Oklahoma QB. Sooners will struggle to make it to New Years Day bowl.

        11) Notre Dame won another close game, outlasting Washington 37-30 in OT. Clausen was 23-31/422 passing in a game with ton of twists and turns in it. Huskies are vastly improved over last season.

        10) Michigan scored two late TDs to force OT in East Lansing, but the Spartans prevailed in overtime, beating Michigan for second year in row for first time since 1967. Win snapped three-game Michigan State skid.

        9) As for teams that couldn't stand prosperity this week, how about the Houston Cougars, who lost 58-41 at UTEP after beating Texas Tech and Oklahoma State in their last two games. So much for being ranked.

        8) Auburn went to Knoxville an unbeaten, unranked underdog to Vols, but came home a 26-22 winner. Tennessee fans can whine all they want about struggling QB Crompton, but they have more issues than just QB, as Auburn hung 459 yards on the Volunteer defense.

        7) Perennial underachiever Clemson is 2-3, losing 24-21 at a Maryland that had been 0-3 against D-I competition- Terps' only win had been in OT against I-AA James Madison.

        6) Then there is Florida State, which is now 5-6 in its last 11 games vs
I-A teams after their 28-21 loss at Boston College. The way competition is for players in Florida, there will FSU boosters calling for a change in coaches, which is a sensitive issue, given all Mr Bowden has done there.

        5) There is something to be said for checking strength of opponents in handicapping games; Arkansas came to Dallas on two-game skid, but the two losses were Georgia/Alabama. Texas A&M had drilled three stiffs, but after grabbing early 10-0 lead, they got squashed 47-19 by the Hogs at JerryWorld. Seriously, Michigan didn't want Ryan Mallett?

        4) Purdue led Northwestern 21-3 with 11:52 left in first half, but never scored again and lost 27-21 to the Wildcats. Boilers lost five fumbles, as they continue to flounder in Coach Hope's first year as head coach.

        3) South Florida was sloppy, losing three fumbles the week after biggest win in school history, but they forced seven Syracuse turnovers, pulled away late from the Orangemen, 34-20.

        2) The epidemic of unsportsmanlike penalties after touchdowns has to stop. Its almost like officials penalize anyone who shows enthusiasm of any type, even if its a go-ahead score in the last minute of play. The lack of common sense shown by officials is ridiculous. Let the kids play.

        1) What began as a horrifying week at USC ended well, with Trojans a 30-3 winner in Berkeley, as Stafon Johnson tweeted happily from LA throughout the game. The young man seems to be doing well after his weightlifting accident Monday left him in surgery for seven hours.

            This Day in Baseball

On October 4 in Baseball History...

1906 - The Chicago Cubs won their 116th game of 152 played for a winning percentage (.763) that has not been matched.

1919 - White Sox pitcher Ed Cicotte makes two errors in one inning of Game Four to give the Reds the only runs of the game. He walks none and gives up five hits, but Jimmy Ring gives up only three hits and wins, 2-0. The Reds lead the World Series three games to one.

1922 - For the first time, the entire World Series will be broadcast over the radio. Writer Grantland Rice does the announcing of the Giants-Yankees Series for station WJZ, Newark, whose signal is relayed to WGY in Schenectady.

1924 - Giants third baseman Fred Lindstrom, at 18 years, 10 months, is the youngest ever to play in a World Series. President Calvin Coolidge is among 35,760 who jam the stands for Game One in Washington. Walter Johnson loses his World Series debut 4-3 in 12 innings.

1925 - Fans saw the unusual spectacle of two managers, both famous hitters, pitch against each other in the season finale. Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers threw one perfect inning and George Sisler of the St. Louis Browns worked two scoreless innings in Detroit's 11-6 victory.

1939 - The World Series begins in New York with the Yankees as heavy favorites and the Reds playing their first Series since the infamous 1919 matchup against Chicago. The game is tied 1-1 until the last of the ninth, when Yankees catcher Bill Dickey singles home the winning run.

1944 - The only all-St. Louis World Series opens with the Browns, as the visiting team, beating the Cardinals on George McQuinn's home run, 2-1. Denny Galehouse is the winning pitcher and Mort Cooper loses despite allowing just two hits.

1948 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 in a one-game AL playoff. The pitching of Gene Bearden and the hitting of Lou Boudreau keyed the victory.

1950 - Relief ace Jim Konstanty of the Phils starts and loses Game One of the World Series to Vic Raschi and the Yankees, 1-0. Bobby Brown doubles and comes around on two long flies to score the lone run.

1955 - The Brooklyn Dodgers won their only World Series with Johnny Podres beating the New York Yankees 2-0.

1959 - In Los Angeles, the Dodgers beat the White Sox 3-1 behind the pitching of Don Drysdale and Larry Sherry in Game Two of the World Series. Carl Furillo's pinch two-run single in the seventh is the difference. The attendance of 92,234 sets a new World Series mark.

1961 - Whitey Ford's third straight World Series shutout, with home runs by Elston Howard and Bill Skowron, gives New York a 2-0 win in the opener against Cincinnati at Yankee Stadium.

1962 - In the opener of the World Series at Candlestick Park, Whitey Ford's record scoreless inning streak ends at 33 2/3 when a surprise bunt by Jose Pagan brings Willie Mays home. The Yankees win, 6-2, the last of a record 10 World Series victories for Ford.

1964 - The St. Louis Cardinals clinched the NL pennant with an 11-5 triumph over the New York Mets, ending the closest pennant race in league history.

1967 - Cardinals left fielder Lou Brock has four hits, steals two bases and scores twice, as St. Louis edges Boston 2-1 to open the World Series at Fenway Park. Bob Gibson has 10 strikeouts and outduels Jose Santiago, whose home run is Boston's only score.

1969 - The major leagues held their first divisional championships. The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 9-5 and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in 12 innings in the opening games.

1980 - Mike Schmidt's two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning gives Philadelphia a 6-4 win over Montreal, clinching the NL East title for the Phillies. The home run is Schmidt's 48th of the season, breaking Eddie Mathews' single-season record for third baseman set in 1953.

1987 - The Detroit Tigers took advantage of one of the great collapses in baseball history to win the AL East title, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 behind the six-hit pitching of Frank Tanana. The Blue Jays lost their last seven games of the season, including three straight in the season-ending series at Detroit.

1989 - Will Clark has six RBI on four hits, including two home runs (one of which is the first NLCS grand slam since 1977) to lead the Giants to an 11-3 win over the Cubs in Game One.

1995 - Jim Leyritz homers with a man on in the 15th inning to give the Yankees a dramatic victory and a two-games-to-none Division Series lead over the Mariners.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles (-114, 9.5)

The Blue Jays have shown some fight in the final days of the season, going 8-2 in their last 10 games heading into Saturday.

That fighting spirit doesn’t end on the field – or with the Baltimore Orioles. Things are getting nasty in the Blue Jays’ clubhouse.

Early Saturday morning, reports came out the GM J.P. Ricciardi was axed after a season full of questionable moves and roster decisions. But the upheaval doesn’t end there. Players are on the edge of mutiny and are asking for the head of manager Cito Gaston.

“You hate for anything like this to come out, but we’ll have to deal with it,” second baseman Aaron Hill told the Globe and Mail. “I think there are some things that need to be addressed, yes.

“I think everybody pretty much feels the same, for the most part.”

Players met with interim CEO Paul Beeston before Saturday’s game to voice their opinions on the franchise’s current direction.

"I've treated everybody with respect, so I'm not sure what their bitch is," Gaston told reporters.

With all the talk of offseason questions, Sunday’s finale is the last thing on Toronto’s mind.

                  Pick: Baltimore -114

Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds (-174, 8.5)

When you’re as bad as the Pirates, small victories can seem like a World Series win.

The Bucs avoided a 100-loss season with a 3-1 win over the Reds Friday, giving Pittsburgh its third straight win and fifth W in its last six games.

Following that victory, the Pirates celebrated their avoidance of the century loss mark just like those clubs clinching playoff spots – dousing each other in beer. Rookie pitcher Daniel McCutchen got the worst of the booze bath after pitching over six solid innings for the win.

"None of us wanted that," third baseman Andy LaRoche told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I know it's not something to be proud of, not getting to 100 losses, but we're still playing some pretty good baseball, and that's the most important thing."

The Bucs look to ride this momentum into Sunday’s finale. Pittsburgh has won five of its last six season finales going back to 2003.

                  Pick: Pittsburgh +166

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds

Being tagged with the name “Homer” would seem like a voodoo curse for a major league pitcher. However, Bailey has shunned his namesake and performed well down the homestretch of the season.

The Reds' righty is 2-0 in his last three starts, posting a 1.35 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk count of 15-to-6 in that span. His most recent start was a seven-inning gem in which Bailey gave up just one run on seven hits while striking out seven batters in a win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

                    A.J. Burnett, New York Yankees

With the Yankees’ top arms rounding into form just in time for October, a return to glory is very possible for the Bronx Bombers. Burnett, one of the big offseason acquisitions, is rolling into the postseason.

The left-hander has allowed just four runs in his last three starts, going 1-0 in that stretch. Burnett has whiffed 20 batters in those 19 innings and owns an ERA south of 2.00.

                    Slumping

                    Luke Hochevar, Kansas City Royals

The Royals' righty has just one win since the end of July, which came two weeks ago against the Chicago White Sox. That complete-game shutout is a diamond in Hochevar’s second-half rough. He’s followed that gem with two horrible outings.

Hochevar has given up 14 runs in his last two starts including serving up eight runs, 12 hits – two home runs – in six innings against the Yankees Monday. He has given up five or more runs in five of his last six starts.

                    Scott Feldman, Texas Rangers

Feldman is running on empty heading into the final day of the 2009 season. His recent outings have lasted under four innings, but that hasn’t limited the right-hander's ability to give up big runs.

Feldman allowed 11 earned runs in just seven innings of work last week. While he has 17 wins on the year, Feldman has just one W in his last four starts.

Chicago White Sox at Detroit (1:05 p.m. EDT). If the Tigers need to win— either to clinch the AL Central or stay even with Minnesota—they’ll start ace Justin Verlander (18-9) against John Danks (13-10).

                              STARS

                              RACY

Detroit, which is tied with Minnesota for first in the AL Central, is in danger of becoming the only team in baseball history to be in first place on May 10 and stay atop a division until losing the title in the last week. The Tigers had been alone in first place since play ended July 24 and had a seven-game lead less than a month ago.

                              ALL SET

The National League playoff matchups for the first round are set. The wild-card Colorado Rockies will face the NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies and the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers will face the NL Central champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Acting team president Paul Beeston said he would recommend Anthopoulos be retained full time once the Blue Jays complete their search for a permanent chief executive officer.

1948—The Cleveland Indians beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 in a one-game playoff for the AL pennant. The pitching of Gene Bearden and the hitting of Lou Boudreau were chiefly responsible for the victory.

1987—The Detroit Tigers took advantage of one of the great collapses in baseball history to win the AL East title, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 behind the six-hit pitching of Frank Tanana. The Blue Jays lost their last seven games of the season, including three straight in the season-ending series in Detroit.

1999—The New York Mets, behind the strong pitching of Al Leiter, clinched the last remaining postseason berth by beating the Cincinnati Reds 5-0 in a one-game playoff for the NL wild card.
