    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, October 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Pac-10 rivals California and USC do battle, and the National Hockey League offers up its first Saturday slate of the season.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

No. 24 California hosts No. 7 USC on Saturday night as they try to recover from a shocking defeat in their last contest. The Golden Bears were pounded 42-3 at Oregon last weekend, as quarterback Kevin Riley went just 12-of-31 for 123 yards passing with no TDs. The Trojans got past Washington State in their last game, but didn't cover the big spread in the 27-6 victory. The oddsmakers have USC as the 4.5-point road favorite for Saturday's matchup, with the total at 47.5.

No. 3 Alabama (-16) is at Kentucky on Saturday, with No. 4 LSU at No. 18 Georgia (-3), UC Davis at No. 5 Boise State (no line), No. 6 Virginia Tech (-16.5) at Duke, No. 8 Oklahoma (-8) at No. 17 Miami, No. 9 Ohio State (-18) at Indiana, and No. 10 Cincinnati (-29) at Miami-Ohio. The Bearcats boosted their record to a perfect 4-0 by beating Fresno State 28-20 last week. The RedHawks, meanwhile, remain winless at 0-4 after they lost to Kent State 29-19 last time out.

Both No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Texas are idle this week; the Gators return next week against LSU, while the Longhorns have Colorado next up on their schedule.

As well, there are a pair of Canadian Football League games on tap for Saturday, with Montreal at Toronto and Hamilton at Calgary. The Alouettes are 10-favorites against the Argos, and the Stamps are favored by 6.5 points over the Tiger-Cats.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Royals ace Zack Greinke (16-8, 2.06 ERA) will try to add to his Cy Young credentials on Saturday as his team continues their series in Minnesota. Also on the American League slate: the Angels at Oakland, Toronto at Baltimore, the Yankees at Tampa Bay, Cleveland at Boston, Texas at Seattle, and the White Sox at Detroit. Alfredo Figaro (2-1, 5.74 ERA) is penciled in as the Tigers' starter.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's Arizona at the Cubs, Milwaukee at St. Louis, Houston at the Mets, Washington at Atlanta, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, San Francisco at San Diego, Florida at Philadelphia, and Colorado at the Dodgers. Jorge De La Rosa (16-9, 4.45 ERA) is expected to take on Clayton Kershaw (8-8, 2.89 ERA) in that contest between playoff-bound NL West teams.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

All 30 teams will be in action around the National Hockey League on Saturday, starting with the two matchups over in Europe - Chicago at Florida, and St. Louis at Detroit. The rest of the busy slate: Vancouver at Colorado, Carolina at Boston, Tampa Bay at Atlanta, Toronto at Washington, Ottawa at the Rangers, Pittsburgh at the Islanders, Philadelphia at New Jersey, Montreal at Buffalo, Minnesota at Columbus, Nashville at Dallas, San Jose at Anaheim, Calgary at Edmonton, and Phoenix at Los Angeles, with Wayne Gretzky no longer the Coyotes' bench boss.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, October 3

      Bunch of pigs

The NFL has its first confirmed case of Swine Flu. Houston rookie tight end Anthony Hill was hospitalized this week with the H1N1 virus. The Texans (-9) are heavy favorites against the Raiders Sunday, but also have been monitoring other sick players. It would be a good idea to watch the team for last-second scratches.

"So we have one confirmed case of swine flu on our team and he's doing much better today," coach Gary Kubiak told the Associated Press. "We had a few guys feeling ill yesterday but they all came back today.”

      50-50 shot

Clinton Portis might want to see a fast end to the Jim Zorn era in Washington. The new head coach has struggled to mesh with Portis and it’s no surprise he is off to the worst start of his career – 183 yards on 47 carries through three games. Portis, who is battling bone spurs, now is listed as questionable and is said to be “50-50” to play against the horrible Buccaneers. Backups Ladell Betts and Marcus Manson scare no one and it’s getting more and more tempting to look at under 37 total points as a solid play.

      Terrapins, Tigers slow to score

When Clemson plays Maryland, one thing is certain: not a lot of points are scored. The teams have combined to go under the total in seven of the past eight meetings – once each year since 2001. Maryland is yielding more than 38 points per game, but has held the Tigers to 17 points or less five of the past seven years. The total is posted at 46.5.

      Smooth Sailing

Navy hasn’t just won its past six straight against rival Air Force. It’s done it five times as an underdog, going 6-0 ATS during that span. The Midshipmen, however, enter this year’s matchup as 2.5-point favorites against the Falcons, which will be led by quarterback Tim Jefferson, who missed last week’s game against San Diego with an ankle injury.

      Cristal clear

Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet didn’t exactly get a resounding vote of confidence from his coach after allowing four goals on 24 shots in a season-opening loss to Florida. Joel Quennneville refused to name a starter for Saturday’s game against the Panthers following the defeat, and Huet is coming off the worst statistical season of his career. Florida is listed at +129 in the rematch with total of 5.5.

      Avalanche of success

Even in a down year, the Colorado Avalanche still had the Canucks’ number. The Avalanche took seven of 10 from Vancouver last year despite finishing last in the Northwest Division. Colorado opened the season with a 5-2 win over a solid San Jose team and got 38 saves from new goalie Craig Anderson. Conversely, the Canucks got a shaky start from Roberto Luongo who coughed up four goals on just 22 shots in a 5-3 loss at Calgary on Thursday. Colorado is posted at + 129 with an over/under of 5.5.

      Ice cold

The last thing Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels needs is a start against the Marlins. Hammels (10-10, 4.25 ERA) hasn’t pitched like an ace this season, especially against the fish from Florida. In 17 1-3 innings against the NL East foe this year, he has given up 10 earned runs on 16 hits, including five home runs. Florida is +185 with a total of 8.5.

      Bitter beer face

When Milwaukee and St. Louis get together, the one thing the teams know how to do is play tight, low-scoring games. Ten of the team’s 15 matchups have gone under the total this season, including eight of their past 10 meetings and four straight. The Brewers also don’t figure to score much off St. Louis starter Kyle Lohse, who has dominated them this season. St. Louis is listed at -158 with an over/under of 9.

      QUOTE OF THE DAY

"It just revitalized my life. When you're more relaxed and you're happier, then everything else kind of comes a little bit easier, too.”
Pro golfer Greg Norman late last year on his marriage to former tennis star Chris Everet. The pair announced their separation on Friday after only 15 months.

On October 3 in Baseball History...

1897 - Cap Anson closed out a remarkable 27-year career that started in the National Association in 1871. He hit two home runs against St. Louis. At 46, he was the oldest player to homer in the majors.

1904 - Christy Mathewson strikes out 16 Cards in a 3-1 Giants victory. Big Six's 16 strikeouts establishes a new record as he finishes the game in one hour and 15 minutes.

1919 - Rookie lefty Dickie Kerr pitches a three-hitter as the White Sox win 3-0. Joe Jackson has two hits and Chick Gandil drives in two runs as the White Sox cut Cincinnati's World Series lead to 2-1. Cuban Adolfo Luque becomes the first Latin American player to appear in a World Series game, pitching one inning of relief for the Reds.

1920 - In a 16-7 win over the White Sox, Browns first baseman George Sisler gets his 257th hit of the season to set a major league record. He also hurls a scoreless ninth inning in relief for St. Louis.

1926 - After the Yankees score twice in the second, Grover Cleveland Alexander sets down the last 21 batters, striking out 10 in the second game of the World Series. Billy Southworth and shortstop Tommy Thevenow collect three hits each for a 6-2 St. Louis win.

1934 - Dizzy Dean wins the opening game of the World Series 8-3. Detroit manager Mickey Cochrane holds back his ace, Schoolboy Rowe, and veteran Al Crowder is ineffective as Joe Medwick homers in a 4-for-4 day. The Tigers make five errors.

1940 - Jimmy Ripple's two-run home run in the third inning of Game Two provides the winning margin as the Reds end the NL's 10-game Series losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Tigers.

1945 - The Tigers and Cubs meet in the World Series for the fourth time. Hank Borowy pitches a six-hitter and Hal Newhouser is roughed up for eight runs in three innings as the Cubs win, 9-0.

1946 - The St. Louis Cardinals won the National League pennant by beating the Brooklyn Dodgers 8-4 and sweeping the best-of-three playoff.

1947 - Floyd Bevens of the Yankees held the Dodgers hitless until two were out in the ninth, then pinch-hitter Cookie Lavagetto doubled in two runs for a 3-2 Brooklyn victory in the fourth game of the World Series.

1951 - Bobby Thomson hit a three-run homer off Ralph Branca of the Brooklyn Dodgers with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the New York Giants a dramatic 5-4 playoff victory and the National League pennant.

1956 - Sal Maglie and the Dodgers defeat the Yankees 6-3 in the opening game of the World Series.

1957 - In Game Three of the World Series, Lew Burdette wins the first of his three decisions against the Yankees. Burdette and the Braves beat Bobby Shantz 4-2.

1962 - The San Francisco Giants rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to win the third game of the tie-breaking playoffs, 6-4, over the Los Angeles Dodgers and move on to the World Series.

1968 - Detroit's Mickey Lolich evens the World Series in Game Two with a six-hitter and his first major-league home run to defeat St. Louis, 8-1.

1971 - Bob Robertson's three home runs led the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 9-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants, tying the National League playoffs at 1-1.

1972 - Roric Harrison homers as Baltimore beats Cleveland 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. With the DH rule on the horizon, it will be the last home run hit by an AL pitcher until interleague play 25 years later.

1974 - Frank Robinson becomes the first black manager in the major leagues, as the Indians name him to replace Ken Aspromonte for the 1975 season.

1976 - Hank Aaron singles in his last major-league at bat and drives in his 2,297th run as the sixth-place Brewers lose to the Tigers, 5-2.

1981 - The Brewers and Expos clinch their first-ever postseason appearances. Milwaukee beats Detroit 2-1 to wrap up the second-half title in the AL East, while Montreal edges the Mets 5-4 to win the NL East's second playoff spot.

1982 - Robin Yount smacks two home runs and a triple as Milwaukee whips Baltimore 10-2 to win the AL East championship. Don Sutton, 4-1 since being acquired by the Brewers in late August, is the winning pitcher. Milwaukee lost three in a row to Baltimore to make this last game of the season a do-or-die affair.

1986 - Baltimore loses to Detroit 6-3, assuring the Orioles of their first last-place finish since moving from St. Louis in 1954.

1987 - Benito Santiago's 34-game hitting streak, an all-time rookie record, ended as the San Diego Padres snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1990 - George Brett became the first player to win a batting title in three different decades. Brett went 1-for-1 in Kansas City's 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians to win the American League title with a .329 average. Brett also won AL batting titles in 1976 and 1980.

1990 - Willie McGee became the first player to win a batting title in a league he didn't finish the season in. McGee, who had a .335 average when St. Louis traded him to Oakland on Aug. 28, won his second National League crown when Dave Magadan of the New York Mets failed to catch him on the season's final day.

1993 - The Toronto Blue Jays became the first team in American League history to have teammates finish 1-2-3 in the batting race. John Olerud led the league with a .363 batting average. Paul Molitor finished at .332 and Roberto Alomar closed the year at .326.

1993 - The Giants need to beat the Dodgers on the final day of the season to force a one-game playoff with the Braves for the NL West title, but the Dodgers have other plans. LA rips the Giants, 12-1. At 103-59, San Francisco becomes the first team since the 1954 Yankees to win that many games and not play in the postseason.

1995 - Tony Pena homers to left field in the 13th inning to give the Indians a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in the first game of the Division Series. It is Cleveland's first postseason victory since 1948.

1997 - The Braves and Marlins both sweep the Division Series. The Braves, behind a three-hitter by John Smoltz, complete the sweep of Houston with a 4-1 win. The Marlins ride a grand slam by Devon White to a 6-2 win and sweep of San Francisco.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays (-104, 9)

With the American League East title in hand and October baseball the Yankees’ focus, this weekend’s final series of the regular season is the least of New York’s worries.

And to prove that these games with the Rays mean nothing, the Yankees will be turning to their reserves to give the starters some much needed rest before the playoffs.

But there is another reason why these bench players get some face time at the end of the year. In past postseason runs, New York has gotten inspired performances from unexpected places. These closing contests are a great way to get the bench in the right mind set come October.

"You never know what can happen," Jerry Hairston Jr. told reporters after getting some playing time against the Royals earlier this week. "You see it time and again. The guys that end up in the spotlight aren't always the stars."

New York's mish-mash lineup has gotten the job done in the past week, going 5-1 heading into Friday. But the lack of star power has limited the Yankees offense in recent games, helping the team go 2-7-1 over/under in the last 10 games.

            Pick: Under 9

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres (+116, 7)

Hey Giants. Hey Padres. You guys can stop going balls out. The postseason is not in your futures.

These two National League West foes have been among the hottest teams in the past week, combining for a 7-4 record heading into Friday’s series opener.

While these teams rank in the basement of most MLB hitting statistics, they are among the best pitching clubs in the past month. San Francisco posts a collective ERA under 4.00 since August and San Diego’s staff came to life in the final month of the schedule, with an ERA just north of 3.00.

As of Friday night, the under has cashed in eight of their past 11 meetings.

            Pick: Under 7

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

              Scott Kazmir, Los Angeles Angels

Like other Angels pitchers, Kazmir has had his outstanding performances wasted by the Halos' lack of run support. Since coming over from the Rays, the left-hander is jus 1-2 in five starts but owns a 2.01 ERA during those appearances.

His most recent start was a six-inning, six-hit, three-run showing against the Yankees which earned Kazmir a loss after Los Angeles mustered only two runs. He struck out four batters in that start, giving him 23 strikeouts and just nine walks in his time in La-La Land.

              Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals

Can someone tell Zack Greinke he’s already a shoe-in for the American League Cy Young.

The Royals star righty has put together a monster year but is still going strong, leaving no doubt to who is the best pitcher in the AL. Greinke is 6-3 in his 14 starts since the break and posts a 1.97 ERA in that span. This month, Greinke has been even better. He owns a 3-0 record and a near invisible ERA of 0.55.

              Slumping

              David Bush, Milwaukee Brewers

As bad as Dave Bush has been in his last three starts, he still has a win during this span. The Brew Crew’s starter has allowed 14 total runs in his last three trips to the bump including a five-earned run blowout in just over four innings.

Bush hasn’t gone past the sixth inning in this span and lugs an 11.12 ERA in those three starts.

              Daniel Cabrera, Arizona Diamondbacks

You know the Diamondbacks are packing it in when they hand the ball to Daniel Cabrera.

The former Orioles and Nationals pitcher will make his first start since joining Arizona earlier this summer. He has made five relief appearances with the D-backs, putting in just six innings of work and posting a 7.50 ERA.

In his time with Washington, the once promising right-hander had a 0-5 record with a 5.85 ERA in nine games before being released in June.

                      Saturday, October 3

Kansas City at Minnesota (4:10 p.m. EDT). Royals ace Zack Greinke (16-8, 2.06 ERA) gets one more chance to impress Cy Young Award voters and play spoiler against the Twins, who are trying to win the AL Central.

                      STARS

                      Friday

                      — B.J. Upton, Rays, became the first player in Tampa Bay history to hit for the cycle. He went 5 for 5 with a career-high six RBIs in a 13-4 win over the Yankees.

                      — Ubaldo Jimenez, Rockies, struck out 10 in six innings as Colorado beat the Dodgers 4-3.

                      — Delmon Young, Twins, hit his first career grand slam and drove in five runs as Minnesota beat Kansas City 10-7.

                      — Jake Peavy, White Sox, pitched two-hit ball for eight innings in an 8-0 win at Detroit.

                      — Michael Aubrey, Orioles, hit his first career grand slam and a two-run homer to lead Baltimore over Toronto 13-7.

                      — John Maine, Mets, beat Houston 7-1. He became the first Mets pitcher to win six consecutive home starts since Sid Fernandez in 1990.

                      RACY

Detroit led the AL Central by one game over Minnesota going into Saturday’s matchups—the Tigers vs. the White Sox and the Twins vs. the Royals. … The Dodgers led the NL West by one game over Colorado. The Rockies and Los Angeles play Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.

                      NOT SEEING 20-20

Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals and CC Sabathia of the Yankees both were denied in bids to post their 20th victories. Wainwright got a no-decision in St. Louis’ 12-6 defeat by Milwaukee, while Sabathia took the loss in a 13-4 romp by the Rays.

                      UH OH

Boston shortstop Alex Gonzalez was hit on the right hand by a pitch from Cleveland’s Kerry Wood. An X-ray showed “a line” on the outside part of his hand. More X-rays were scheduled for Saturday. The Red Sox got Gonzalez in a trade with Cincinnati in mid-August to fill their void in the infield, and have little depth behind him.

                      SLUMPS

Detroit’s Edwin Jackson (13-9) gave up a career-high eight runs over five-plus innings in a loss to Chicago. … The Dodgers’ 4-3 loss to Colorado was their season-worst fifth in a row. … Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez matched a career high by striking out four times. … Cleveland set a club record with its 13th consecutive road loss in a 6-2 defeat at Boston, breaking the mark set in 1963 and tied in 1991.

                      ON THE BOARD

Jeff Manship (1-1) earned his first major league victory, pitching Minnesota past the Royals 10-7. The rookie righty (1-1) gave up three earned runs in 5 1-3 innings.

                      SWINGS

Chipper Jones, who won the NL batting title last season by hitting .364, was 100 points below that mark with two games left. He went 0 for 5 to fall to .264 in Atlanta’s 6-3 loss to Washington. … The Nationals, who lead the majors with 103 losses, won their fifth in a row. … Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright hit his first career triple, connecting against Braden Looper. The last St. Louis pitcher to hit a triple? It was Looper, in September 2008.

                      GONE

The Cincinnati Reds fired pitching coach Dick Pole before Friday night’s game. He was in his third season with the team. The rest of the coaches will return in their same roles next.

                      SPEAKING

“What would I say to them? I think I’ve done everything that’s right here. I think I’ve treated everybody the way I’d like to be treated. I’m not sure what I’d call a meeting about. If they want to call a meeting and talk to me, that’s fine. But I don’t know what to say to them.”—Toronto manager Cito Gaston, told that some of his players don’t like the way he runs the team.

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils (-140, 5.5)

The Flyers are determined not to make the same mistake twice. They got off to a sluggish start last year and earned a 0-3-3 record after the first six games. The slow start ended up costing them home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

This year, the team is focused on getting off on the right foot.

“It’s a matter of starting better and finishing stronger,” coach John Stevens told the media. “They all make a difference in the end. We’ve gone through a lot of experiences the last two years. Now it’s time to put it all together.”

The Flyers also added to their defensive unit by acquiring veteran blue liner Chris Pronger. He joins an already stand-out group led by Kimmo Timonen, Matt Carle and Braydon Coburn. They will be called to help out new goalie Ray Emery who owned a 1.78 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage during the preseason.

Expect Philly to be the hungrier team in this matchup.

                          Pick: Flyers +129

Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals (-196, 6)

The Leafs may have added size and toughness in the offseason, but their penalty kill looked shaky in the 4-3 overtime loss to the Habs Thursday night. They outshot the Canadiens 46-27 and dominated most of the game, but they allowed two shorthanded goals on four penalties including the tying one to Glen Metropolit with less than four minutes left in regulation.

The Leafs had the worse defense and the worse penalty kill last year. And so far, it appears to be more of the same.

“I don't think we have a bad penalty kill, we just didn't do the job tonight,” said center Matt Stajan. “Every team is going to take penalties. We have the guys here who can kill penalties, we have to make sure we do a better job of it. We don't want to change the way we play.”

“At the end of the day, you're not going to take zero penalties in a season. We just have to do a better job killing them.”

The Leafs will have their work cut out for them Saturday night against the Capitals’ powerful offense. Washington dominated the Bruins from start to finish in Thursday’s 4-1 victory. Their offense was sharp and even Jose Theodore, who struggled for most of last season, looked solid between the pipes.

                          Pick: Capitals -196

                            Montreal Alouettes at Toronto Argonauts

The Alouettes vow that they are still hungry and motivated after posting a 10-2 record and that they won’t slow down or lose focus even if five of their six last regular season games will be against teams with losing records. Coach Marc Trestman insists that the Argos are a much better team than their 3-9 record suggests. The Alouettes are also starting to think about matching the 16-2 record, best ever in an 18-games season, posted by the Edmonton Eskimos in 1989. But most importantly, they are aware that a win against the Argos and a Hamilton loss in Calgary would mean they would clinch first place in the East. Safety Mathieu Proulx and left tackle Josh Bourke, two key players, will be back in action in Toronto. The Argos will be without cornerback Willie Middlebrooks, who suffered a neck injury. But Dominic Dorsey will play is first home game of the year. The last time these two teams met in Montreal on August 7, the Alouettes shut out the Argos 25-0.

                            Pick: Montreal -10

Hamilton Tiger Cats at Calgary Stampeders

Defensive end Mike Labinjo is back after missing six games with a broken leg and the Stampeders will want to avenge a 24-17 loss suffered two weeks ago in Hamilton. The Tiger Cats just took a 42-8 pounding at home from the Montreal Alouettes. Both times the TiCats took a heavy beating this season they came back to win a game they were not expected to. Can they do it a third time? This could prove close to impossible against the defending Grey Cup champs. Calgary has won eight of its last 10 games against the Tiger Cats. CFL Offensive Player of the Month Jeremaine Copeland is playing arguably his best football and Henry Burris is taking full advantage of it. Calgary, powered by Joffrey Reynolds, also has a very potent running game that now leads the CFL in rushing yards per game while the Tiger Cats are ranked seventh in the league with an average of 133 rushing yards allowed per game. Quinton Porter will start at QB for the Tiger Cats but he has been struggling despite this team’s rise from mediocrity to respectability. Don’t be surprised to see Kevin Glenn take over if Porter continues to fail igniting the offence. Actually, don’t even be surprised if rookie QB Adam Tafralis sees some action.

                            Pick: Calgary -7

                            Last Week 1-3, season 26-22
