    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, October 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Ranked BYU meets Utah State, the NHL stages games in Europe, and two pitchers take the hill in search of 20th victories.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are two college football games on tap for Friday, with Pittsburgh at Louisville and Utah State at No. 20 BYU. The oddsmakers like the Panthers on the road in that first matchup, pegging them as 6.5-point favorites (with a total of 53.5 points). Meanwhile, the ranked Cougars are big 24-point home favorites against the visiting Aggies on Friday. BYU had no trouble pounding Colorado State in their last contest, getting three TDs from Harvey Unga in a 42-23 victory.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on the Friday schedule. First up is Edmonton at Winnipeg, with the Eskimos sitting as 4-point road favorites (and the total at 51 points). The late game is then Saskatchewan at British Columbia, with the Lions a slim 1-point home favorite (and the total at 54 points). The Lions currently sit in the cellar of the West division standings, but with a mark of 5-7 they're just a couple games back of the first-place Roughriders.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Adam Wainwright (19-8, 2.58 ERA) will try to pick up his 20th win of the season on Friday night when his Cardinals host the Brewers. Righthander Wainwright got win No. 19 last time out, holding the Rockies to two earned runs over his eight innings of work while fanning 11 batters. St. Louis has won eight of Wainwright's last 10 outings. Braden Looper (13-7, 5.10 ERA) is slated to start for the Brewers; Looper has surrendered 15 earned runs over his last 15 innings.

Also on the NL schedule for Friday: Arizona at the Cubs, Florida at Philadelphia, Houston at the Mets, Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Washington at Atlanta, San Francisco at San Diego, and Colorado at the Dodgers. Ubaldo Jimenez (14-12, 3.52 ERA) is slated to take on Randy Wolf (11-6, 3.22 ERA) in that last matchup.

CC Sabathia (19-7, 3.21 ERA) also goes for win No. 20 on Friday night, as the Yankees play on the road against the Rays. Lefthander Sabathia blanked the Red Sox over seven innings in his most recent start, giving up just one hit while fanning eight batters. Sabathia is 8-0 with two no-decisions over his last 10 starts. David Price (9-7, 4.60 ERA) gets the ball for Tampa Bay on Friday; lefthander Price gave up five runs over five innings vs. the Rangers last time out.

Rounding out the American League slate for Friday night: Toronto at Baltimore, Cleveland at Boston, Kansas City at Minnesota, the Angels at Oakland, Texas at Seattle, and the White Sox at Detroit. It'll be Jake Peavy (2-0, 2.25 ERA in the AL) vs. Edwin Jackson (13-8, 3.36 ERA) in that Chicago/Detroit contest on Friday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The second day of the National Hockey League's regular-season schedule features four more matchups, including two over in Europe. Florida and Chicago get things going at 12:00pm ET with a game at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, while Detroit and St. Louis will drop the puck at 3:00pm ET at Globe Arena in Stockholm. The stateside contests on Friday night then have Philadelphia at Carolina and the Rangers at Pittsburgh, with the Pens starting their Cup defense.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Friday, October 2

      Barber of Dallas

The backfield situation for the Dallas Cowboys appears to be a bit more stable. Star back Marion Barber will play on Sunday against the Denver Broncos, said owner Jerry Jones. Barber missed the team’s 21-7 win over Carolina with a left quad injury, but should be healthy enough to face Denver. This is huge news for Dallas, as the team is expected to be without backup and kick returner Felix Jones, who is suffering from a knee injury, and third-teamer Tashard Choice is not a feature back. Dallas is listed as a 3-point favorite over the Broncos.

      McKelvin gets buffaloed

The Buffalo Bills pass defense just got worse. The 28th ranked unit in the league – allowing more than 273 yards per game through the air – will be without starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin for the remainder of the season. McKelvin broke his leg in the first quarter of a loss to New Orleans last week and was placed on the IR on Thursday. Journeyman Drayton Florence will take his place on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins (+1). The Dolphins have the league’s 30th ranked passing attack and are without quarterback Chad Pennington, but should look to exploit Florence early and often.

      Dodge the Dodgers

Los Angeles might be a team you want to avoid. The Dodgers have lost six of their past 10 and are headed for some rough territory. The team ends the season with three games against Colorado starting Friday night, and if the Rockies sweep, they will drop down from NL West champs to Wild Card winners. The reason for the Dodgers fall fade is a streaky offense that continues to disappear in big spots. The team is averaging a meager two runs per game in its past six losses and even less during its four-game losing streak. Stay away from L.A.

      Galaxy quest

The Los Angeles Galaxy also have been struggling down the stretch. Los Angeles has suffered three of its six losses in the past seven games, including getting shutout three times over that span. The team looks to take a step closer to securing a playoff berth against Chicagoon Sunday, but also will be without midfielder David Beckham who is nursing an ankle injury. Chicago has conceded four goals in its past two games, but is a sparkling 6-2-5 on the road this season and a great value at +185 to win on Friday night.

      Broad street bullies

The Philadelphia Flyers are hanging their hats on defense this season. And low-scoring games have been a staple of the squad’s games against the Hurricanes last year. The Flyers, who open on the road in Carolina Friday night, saw three of their four meetings with the Hurricanes fall under the total last season. Philadelphia also will give loads of ice time to perennial All-Star defenseman Chris Pronger, who is expected to be the team’s leader after getting traded for this offseason. With a total set as high as six, it figures to be the smart play to take the under.

        Six-pack for Friday

        NFL trends for Week 4........

-- Giants covered 12 of their last 14 road games.

-- Saints covered eight of last nine in the Superdome.

-- Tennessee covered 18 of last 25 road games.

-- Washington covered one of last seven at home.

-- Detroit is 10-4-1 vs spread as a double digit underdog.

-- Broncos covered one of their last eight home games.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13.........

        13) Wyoming-- Get a map. Find Laramie, WY on it, then find Miami. It is a very long road trip for the Cowboys this week, at Florida Atlantic.

        12) USC-- You don't think every high school/college team in country lectured their players this week on the importance of having spotters in weight room? Having a spotter probably saved Stafon Johnson's life.

        11) Baylor-- Lost star QB Robert Griffin (ACL) for the year; backup is also banged up. Good news is basketball practice starts in two weeks.

        10) South Florida-- Travel north to Syracuse after biggest win in school history; redshirt freshman QB Daniels looks like the real deal.

        9) Houston-- Had great win over Texas Tech, but then three players had their helmets stolen in the celebration. As of Thursday morning, one had been returned. Hard to play without a helmet.

        8) Michigan State-- Lost last three games by total of 13 points, even as Spartans scored 87 points in the three losses. Now the Wolverines visit East Lansing-- they've won last three visits here.

        7) Kansas State-- I-AA Tennessee Tech kicked off twice to K-State in their one-sided game, and Wildcats ran them both back for TDs. Never heard of that happening before.

        6) California-- Went to Eugene as national title contenders, came back to Berkeley 42-3 losers. Now USC comes to town. Bad week for Tedford.

        5) Notre Dame-- Last three games were decided by total of 10 points. It is still amazing to me that Purdue called timeout with 0:36 left last week, when Irish were going to spike ball to kill clock on 3rd down. They won the game on their second play, which they wouldn't have had otherwise.

        4) New Mexico-- They're 0-4, lost to New Mexico State, and the coach has already punched an assistant, been charged with sexual harassment. Other than that, its been a good season so far in Albuquerque.

        3) Boise State-- Now that there will be a bowl game in the Bronx, Boise is no longer the worst destination for a team to go bowling. Nothing like freezing to death at your bowl, instead of, say, Vegas or Hawai'i.

        2) NC State-- Why did they play back/back I-AA teams? They're better than that. How can coaches measure progress if they're playing crummy teams? I just don't like it when BCS schools play I-AA opponents.

        1) UAB-- Got first-ever win over Southern Mississippi Thursday night, so big night for the Blazers, who are led by senior QB Webb, one of the better players you probably won't see play this season.

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, October 2

Chicago White Sox at Detroit (7:05 p.m. EDT). All-Star right-hander Edwin Jackson (13-8, 3.36 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Tigers in the opener of their final regular-season series. Jake Peavy (2-0, 2.25) goes for the White Sox.

          STARS

          Thursday

          — Chris Carpenter, Cardinals, hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, getting St. Louis back on track with his arm and bat in a 13-0 rout of Cincinnati.

          — Chris Davis, Rangers, homered and drove in three runs, and Texas beat the playoff-bound Los Angeles Angels 11-3.

          — Jon Lester, Red Sox, gave up two hits in 6 1-3 innings to lead Boston to a 3-0 win over Cleveland.

          — Aaron Cook, Rockies, pitched four-hit ball over eight spectacular innings for Colorado, which clinched a playoff berth with a 9-2 win over Milwaukee.

          — Pete Orr, Nationals, hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and Washington beat Atlanta 2-1, hours after the Braves were eliminated from playoff contention.

          — Mike Sweeney, Mariners, hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth inning, and Seattle beat Oakland 4-2.

          THEY’RE IN

The Rockies’ fourth straight victory—9-2 over Milwaukee—eliminated Atlanta, their final pursuer, from contention for the NL wild card. Colorado can still catch the Dodgers for the NL West title if the Rockies sweep a weekend series in Los Angeles. Colorado was 18-28 on May 29 when Jim Tracy took over for longtime manager Clint Hurdle. They finished 91-58.

          PITCHER CAN HIT

Chris Carpenter hit a grand slam and drove in six runs to lead St. Louis to a 13-0 victory over the Reds. Carpenter’s first career homer capped a five-run second inning for the Cardinals. He added a two-run double during a four-run fifth to match the career RBI total he brought into the game. The last pitcher to have six RBIs in a game was Micah Owings for Arizona at Atlanta on Aug. 18, 2007, according to STATS LLC.

          NO BUBBLY

The Tigers had a chance to wrap up their first division crown since 1987 in the finale of a four-game series against Minnesota, but lost 8-3.

          SKID STOPPER

Baltimore stopped a 13-game losing streak by beating Tampa Bay 3-2. The skid was the longest in the majors this season and the third-worst in Orioles history. Baltimore dropped 14 consecutive games in August 1954 and opened the 1988 season by losing 21 straight.

          MILESTONE

Garret Anderson had two hits for Atlanta, including a second-inning single for his 2,500th major league hit. He is the 89th player to reach the plateau, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Anderson ranks seventh among active players. He is in his first season with the Braves after playing for the Angels from 1994-2008.

          LOST ONE

Oakland’s Brett Anderson lost for the first time in September, 4-2 to Seattle. He was 4-0 with a 2.28 ERA since his last loss Aug. 30, and was 8-3 with a 3.02 ERA over his previous 16 starts.

          SLAM IT HOME

Here’s another sign of how bad a season it’s been for the New York Mets: Francisco Rodriguez became the first pitcher since Lee Smith in 1995 to allow two game-ending grand slams in the same season. Justin Maxwell’s two-out homer capped a five-run ninth inning off the All-Star closer and gave Washington a 7-4 victory Wednesday. … The Mets are cutting the average price of season tickets by at least 10 percent following a dismal opening season at Citi Field. The team said that some locations will have cuts or more than 20 percent. All season tickets will go down in price.

          PACKED HOUSE

By drawing 44,905 fans for their 5-3 loss to Houston, the Phillies set a franchise record for attendance at 3,465,206. The previous mark was 3,422,583, during last season’s run to the World Series championship.

          SPEAKING

“We controlled our own destiny today and we had a chance to clinch it out, but you have to give them credit. We’re still two games up with three to play, and we’re in the driver’s seat. We just have to play good baseball like we have at home, take it to the White Sox and we’ll be celebrating.”—Tigers catcher Gerald Laird on what his team has to do win the AL Central after failing to clinch the division with an 8-3 loss to the Twins.

            This Day in Baseball

On October 2 in Baseball History...

1908 - Addie Joss of the Cleveland Indians pitched a perfect game, defeating the Chicago White Sox 1-0.

1916 - Grover Alexander pitched his sixteenth shutout of the season, allowing only three Boston Braves hits in a 2-0 triumph.

1919 - In Game Two of the World Series, White Sox pitcher Lefty Williams falters in the third inning as the Reds take a 3-0 lead. Swede Risberg and Chick Gandil fail in the clutch in a 4-2 Cincinnati win. Chicago manager Kid Gleason tells owner Charlie Comiskey that he is suspicious of his players, but neither league president follows with action.

1920 - The only tripleheader in this century was played, with the Cincinnati Reds defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first two games. The Pirates won the nightcap, which was called after six innings because of darkness.

1921 - The Yankees close the season by beating the Red Sox, 7-6. Babe Ruth hits his fifty-ninth home run off Curt Fullerton.

1932 - The Yankees sweep the Cubs in the World Series. Tony Lazzeri hits two homers and Earle Combs adds another in the 13-6 laugher.

1936 - The Yankees even the World Series and set a Series record for runs as they demolish the Giants 18-4. Lefty Gomez coasts to a six-hit win, while every member of the Yankees lineup makes a hit and scores at least one run. Tony Lazzeri hits a grand slam, the first in World Series play since 1920.

1938 - Bob Feller struck out eighteen Detroit Tigers, setting a single-game record that stood until Steve Carlton broke it in 1969.

1947 - The Dodgers squeak out a 9-8 win over the Yankees, jumping on Bobo Newsom and Vic Raschi for six runs in the second inning. Yogi Berra becomes the first player to hit a pinch home run in World Series history, belting one off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca in the seventh inning.

1949 - The Yankees and the Red Sox enter the last day of the season tied for first place and nearly 70,000 pack Yankee Stadium to see the finale. Vic Raschi nurses a 1-0 lead into the eighth against Ellis Kinder before the Yankees score four runs and go on to win the game and the pennant 5-3. Ted Williams also loses the batting title as George Kell goes two-for-three in Detroit (.3429 to .3427).

1954 - The Giants sweep the American League team with the best record in history, scoring four runs in the fifth for a 7-4 win over Cleveland. The Indians had won 111 games, a record that stood until surpassed by the 1998 Yankees.

1955 - Surprise Brooklyn starter rookie Roger Craig pitches six innings for the 5-3 win to even the World Series. Two home runs by Duke Snider and one by Sandy Amoros prove too much for the Yankees.

1958 - The Braves erupt for seven runs in the first and go on to defeat the Yankees 13-5. Lew Burdette is shaky but beats New York for the fourth consecutive time in the World Series. He also chips in with a three-run home run.

1962 - Just 25,321 fans are on hand at Dodger Stadium for the second game in the best-of-three playoff against the Giants. A ninth-inning sacrifice fly by Ron Fairly sends Maury Wills home with the deciding run in the Dodgers' 8-7 win.

1963 - Sandy Koufax fans the first five batters he faces and becomes the first pitcher to fan fifteen in a World Series game. Johnny Roseboro's three-run home run is the difference as Los Angeles beats the Yankees 5-2 at New York.

1965 - Sandy Koufax's 2-1 win against the Braves clinches the National League pennant for the Dodgers. With thirteen strikeouts, Koufax ups his modern major league season record to 382. (Nolan Ryan will do Koufax one K better in 1973.)

1966 - Sandy Koufax clinches the third Los Angeles pennant in four years, working with just two days rest for a 6-3 win at Philadelphia. Koufax sets Los Angeles records with twenty-seven wins and a 1.73 ERA.

1977 - Dusty Baker homers in his final at-bat of the season during a 6-3 loss to the Astros. It is Baker's 30th home run of the year, enabling him to join teammates Steve Garvey (33), Reggie Smith (32) and Ron Cey (30) in making the Dodgers the first team ever to boast four 30-homer hitters in one season.

1978 - In a one-game playoff for the American League East title, Bucky Dent hit a three-run homer off Mike Torrez, leading the New York Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

1986 - Mike Scott strikes out eight Giants in a 2-1 Astros victory to run his season total to 306, becoming the third National League pitcher to fan 300 batters in one season. Scott loses his bid for a second consecutive no-hitter when Will Clark doubles in the seventh inning.

1988 - Minnesota's season-ending 3-2 win over the Angels is watched by 35,952 fans, making the Twins the first American League club ever to break three million in season attendance.

1992 - Carlos Baerga becomes the first second baseman in American League history to hit .300 with 200 hits, 20 home runs and 100 RBI.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles (+132, 10)

After a season off ups and downs, the Toronto Blue Jays are trying to finish 2009 on the up side.

The Blue Jays have won six straight games and nine of their last 10 – including a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox. Heading into this final series of the schedule, Toronto’s bats have found the form that led them to such a great start to the season.

"The guys are swinging the bats like they did at the start of the season," manager Cito Gaston told MLB.com. "It's something positive to take home and bring back next year."

The Jay are hitting .305 and averaging more than seven runs per game in the last week. Versus the Red Sox, they scored a combined 31 runs and hit 12 home runs over those three games.

They have won five straight games against the Orioles and lead the season series 8-6. Toronto is hitting .277 versus Baltimore and has scored almost five runs per game over those contests.

                  Pick: Toronto -140

                  Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves

While going on a hot streak at the end of a 55-103 season won’t save face, the Washington Nationals are set on going out like winners in 2009. The Nats come into this season finale series with the Braves off a three-game sweep of the New York Mets.

Washington completed the sweep with a walk-off Grand Slam off the bat of Justin Maxwell in front of their die-hard fans in D.C. Wednesday. That home run snapped a skid of 150 losses when trailing after eight innings for the Nationals. It’s not much when looking back at the year they’ve had, but it’s a start.

"There is no way I could explain how good a feeling that is," Nationals interim manager Jim Riggleman told MLB.com. "The fans' excitement, and the players' excitement speaks for themselves.

"It's just indicative of what we have been doing. We have been playing hard. Guys have been battling. It seems we had so many games where we were in those situations -- win or lose. If they were down early, they really hung in there and gave us quality at-bats to get in the game. It has been so many nights. That excitement there is what is in store for the future here."

Washington will ride that momentum into this final series in Atlanta, which dropped two of three games to the Marlins this week and have dropped them four games out of the NL Wild Card spot.

                  Pick: Washington

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees

The Detroit Tigers have to be shaking in their spikes knowing that they’ll face C.C. Sabathia in one of the first two games of the postseason.

The Yankees hefty lefty has been untouchable in the second half of the season. Since the All-Star break, Sabathia is 11-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 14 starts. He has totaled 99 strikeouts during this span while giving just 24 batters a free pass to first.

In his most recent appearance, Sabathia went seven innings for his second straight shutout effort. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last 19 innings of work and owns a 1.29 ERA in his last three starts.

                    Jered Weaver, Los Angeles Angels

Weaver is itching for the playoffs to start. The way he’s been performing, no one – not even the Boston Red Sox – have a chance. Now if the offense could just help him out.

The Halos right-hander has been dealt three straight losses despite posting a 3.72 ERA in that span. Weaver has put in six quality starts in a row and has a record of 2-3 in the past month.

In his last start, Weaver went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. However, Los Angeles managed to give him nothing back in way of support and registered just five hits in a loss to the Oakland A’s last Friday.

                    Slumping

                    Jason Berken, Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles rookie hurler is running on empty at the end of the season. Berken has been knocked around for a total of 15 runs in his last three starts, going 1-1 with an ERA north of 10.00.

The team moved his start back a day to give the righty an extra day of rest. His last start was a nightmare outing against the Cleveland Indians. Berken left his pitches hanging over the plate and was beat up for four runs including two home runs in under four innings of work.

                    Jeremy Sowers, Cleveland Indians

Sowers has been pure sour in his recent trips to the bump.

The Tribe’s southpaw has allowed 11 total runs in his last two starts after putting together a shutout effort against the Twins in the middle of September. Since that gem, he’s lasted just six total innings and has walked five batters in that span.

His most recent appearance lasted just one innings, which was long enough for Sowers to serve up two home runs and five runs on six hits.
