    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers host the rival Twins, the Rangers take on the Angels in L.A., and the WNBA Finals get underway down in Phoenix.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Twins and Tigers will play a doubleheader in Detroit on Tuesday, with Brian Duensing (5-1, 3.33 ERA) facing Justin Verlander (17-9, 3.41 ERA) in the late game. Lefthander Duensing has picked up the win in each of his last three starts, allowing three earned runs in those 19 innings of work. Righthander Verlander beat the Tribe last time out, allowing two runs over seven innings. Verlander was tagged with a defeat by the Twins (five runs over 7 1-3 innings) in his outing on September 19.

Also on the AL schedule for Tuesday: the White Sox at Cleveland, Kansas City at the Yankees, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Boston, Oakland at Seattle, and Texas at the Angels. Scott Feldman (17-6, 3.90 ERA) gets the ball for the Rangers; righthander Feldman beat the Angels on September 19 (two runs over 6 2-3 innings). Scott Kazmir (9-9, 5.06 ERA) goes for Los Angeles; lefthander Kazmir tossed six scoreless innings against the Rangers back on September 18.

Over in the National League the Marlins continue their series in Atlanta on Tuesday, with Rick VandenHurk (2-2, 4.44 ERA) taking on Tim Hudson (2-1, 3.56 ERA). Righthander VandenHurk hasn't picked up a win since August 10, but the Marlins are 4-0 in his last four trips to the mound. Righthander Hudson is coming off a win over the Mets (two runs over six innings). Hudson is 2-1 with a pair of no-decisions in five outings since making his season debut September 1.

Rounding out the NL slate: Houston at Philadelphia, the Mets at Washington, St. Louis at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, the Dodgers at San Diego, Arizona at San Francisco, and Milwaukee at Colorado. Chris Narveson (2-0, 3.82 ERA) takes the mound for the Brewers; the righthander beat the Cubs in his last start (one run over 5 2-3 innings). Jason Marquis (15-12, 3.98 ERA) pitches for Colorado; the righthander is winless in three starts (15 runs over 16 1-3 innings).

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The WNBA Finals get underway on Tuesday night, with Indiana at Phoenix in Game 1. The Fever took the Eastern Conference title with a 72-67 win over the Shock last time out, with Tammy Sutton-Brown scoring a team-high 17 points for Indiana. The Mercury prevailed in the Western Conference Finals with an 85-74 win over the Sparks in their last game, as Diana Taurasi scored 21 points. Oddsmakers have Phoenix as a 4.5-point favorite for Tuesday, with a total of 175.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, September 29

      Backfield in motion

Less than 24 hours after saying that his team's 0-3 start was not the fault of quarterback Byron Leftwich, Tampa Bay Buccaneers first-year coach Raheem Morris announced Monday that Leftwich will be replaced by Josh Johnson when the Bucs face the Washington Redskins on Sunday. "He gives you the dynamic that you all know about," Morris told the St. Petersburg Times. "He creates a better chance to break out of the pocket and make a play with his feet."

Leftwich was 7-of-16 for 22 yards in Sunday's 24-0 home loss to the New York Giants in which Tampa Bay did not have a first down until the third quarter. Johnson came on in the final period and was 4-of-10 for 36 yards on one series, also scrambling for 15 yards - which made him the leading rusher for the Bucs. Tampa Bay is +7 with a total of 37 at Washington.

      Rocking your world

Two years ago, the Colorado Rockies stunned baseball by winning 14 of their last 15 games to overtake San Diego, win the NL West and eventually reach the World Series. Are the Rockies about to fall victim to a similar charge? The Atlanta Braves have won 12 of their last 14 games to move within two games in the loss column of the Rockies, who hold the NL wild card slot.
Atlanta faces Florida before closing with four games against Washington, so the hot streak certainly has a chance to continue. The host Braves should be favored against the Marlins.

      Katie bar the door

The Phoenix Mercury (23-11) have homecourt advantage over the Indiana Fever (22-12) in the WNBA Finals, primarily because of their win at Indiana during the regular season. But that 106-90 win on Sept. 8 came with the Fever missing Katie Douglas, who makes Indiana go. With the teams at full strength in Phoenix on Aug. 8, the Fever notched a 90-83 win with Douglas collecting 28 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The Mercury are -4 with a total of 175 for Tuesday's opener of the best-of-five series in Phoenix.

      Looking out for number two

The playoff-bound New York Yankees will spend the rest of the regular season getting some rest for their regulars and trying to determine their No. 2 starter for the postseason. CC Sabathia will certainly start Game One of the AL Division Series, but it remains to be seen whether A.J. Burnett or Andy Pettitte starts Game Two - and possibly Game Five.

Pettitte has a huge edge in experience, but Burnett can take a huge step forward with a strong start against Kansas City. In his last two starts - both on the road - he has allowed just three earned runs while striking out 17 in 12 2-3 innings. The Yankees are -235 vs. the Royals.

      Road warriors?

Historically, Hawaii has had trouble when playing on the mainland. But the Warriors are off to a good start this season. Wednesday's game at Louisiana Tech is Hawaii's third straight mainland game, and it has covered the first two. Hawaii is getting 3.5 points from Louisiana Tech.

      Rotating rotation

The Red Sox scratched righthander Josh Beckett from Monday's start with back spasms, then later announced that lefthander Jon Lester - knocked out of his last outing by a line drive to the knee - will start Thursday vs. Cleveland. According to mlb.com, Lester had no pain in his right knee after a bullpen session Monday.

      Notable quotable

"He's the toughest guy in college football, without a question and without a doubt in my mind. I've been around this game a long time and a lot of places and I've never seen a guy like him. Who he is as a person, his mental and physical toughness is just superior."

-- Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio, talking about Tim Tebow, who is recovering from a concussion.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Orlando Magic finally extended Stan Van Gundy's contract thru the 2010-11 season; what took them so long?

-- Josh Beckett was scratched from his Monday night start (back)

-- Twins-Tigers were rained out Monday, will play twice on Tuesday.

-- Surprised Auburn is unbeaten yet unranked. They're explosive.

-- Michigan QB Tate Forcier says he never lifted weights when he was in high school. Hard to believe a kid like that never lifted weights.

-- Our thoughts and prayers are with USC RB Stafon Johnson, who had emergency surgery Monday night after a weight bar fell on his throat while he was weightlifting.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

        13) Eagles-- Should get McNabb back after their bye week in Week 4.

        12) Cowboys-- Putting together a team their stadium can be proud of.

        11) Chargers-- Surprisingly looking up at Broncos in the standings.

        10) Falcons-- Gave up 166 rushing yards in Foxboro, as Ryan struggled in his return to Beantown.

        9) Patriots-- Bandwagon can start filling back up now.

        8) Bengals-- After watching them lose to Denver in opener, never would have thought both teams would have won their next two games.

        7) Broncos-- Allowed 16 points in three games, as Mike Nolan does an excellent job coaching the defense.

        6) Vikings-- Greg Lewis caught winning TD pass Sunday; it was only his 4th play on the field the whole game. He was in because the starter was tired from running several consecutive fly patterns.

        5) Ravens-- Happy for Cam Cameron, who went 1-15 as Miami's coach two years ago. Now he's an offensive guru in Baltimore.

        4) Jets-- Last rookie QB to win his first three starts in the first three games of his rookie season? Greg Cook of the 1969 Cincinnati Bengals.

        3) Giants-- Showed their depth in easy win at Tampa; another cakewalk on tap this week in Kansas City.

        2) Colts-- Consecutive primetime road wins; Manning is league's MVP through first three weeks of season.

        1) Saints-- More impressed by them yesterday, when they won with a defense and a running game. Previous Saint teams lose that game.

            SCOREBOARD

            Tuesday, September 29

Florida at Atlanta (7:10 p.m. EDT). Tim Hudson (2-1, 3.56 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for the Braves, who are two games behind Colorado for the wild card and four back of Philadelphia in the NL East with six to play.

            STARS

            Monday

-Kendry Morales, Angels, homered and drove in three runs to help Los Angeles clinch its third straight AL West title with an 11-0 over second-place Texas.

-Jair Jurrjens, Braves, pitched seven shutout innings to help Atlanta win its seventh straight and 15th in 17 games with a 4-0 victory over Florida.

-Andy LaRoche, Pirates, hit two homers and two doubles to help Pittburgh keep the Los Angeles Dodgers from clinching the NL West with an 11-1 win.

-John Danks, White Sox, allowed three hits and one run in his first complete game at any professional level in Chicago's 6-1 win at Cleveland.

-Pat Burrell, Rays, hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 7-6.

            BEST IN THE WEST

Los Angeles clinched its third straight AL West title with an 11-0 victory over second-place Texas on Monday night. About 10 minutes into their beer-and-champagne celebration in the clubhouse, the Angels surrounded and joyously soaked the jersey of Nick Adenhart, the 22-year-old pitcher who died in a car accident in April. The Angels have taken Adenhart's jersey on every road trip and kept his locker intact in memory. Angels players returned to the field and several grabbed a hose from the grounds crew, using it to spray water on fans behind both dugouts. Then the Angels jogged to the outfield and touched Adenhart's photo and No. 34 on the outfield fence. Players posed for a team photo in front of the image.

            BIG DAY

The Twins can put themselves in playoff position with one big day Tuesday after the opener of Minnesota's four-game series at Detroit was postponed by rain on Monday night. The first-place Tigers lead the Twins by two games with seven to play. The rainout will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader. The Tigers might have caught a break with the postponement because Minnesota's star catcher, Joe Mauer, could be relegated to designated hitter Tuesday night.

            NOT YET

Philadelphia lost for the fifth time in seven games. The Phillies' 8-2 loss to the Astros cut their lead in the NL East down to four games with six to play. The defending World Series champions still have a magic number of three for their third straight division title. ... Boston lost for the fourth straight time, 11-5, in a rain-shortened game against the Blue Jays. It was the fourth straight loss for the Red Sox, who could have clinched the AL wild card with a victory and a Texas loss to the Los Angeles Angels later Monday night.

            CLOSING IN

Jair Jurrjens pitched five-hit ball over seven innings, Chipper Jones homered and the Braves beat Florida 4-0 Monday night for their 15th win in 17 games, a stretch that has lifted them into playoff contention with six games left in the regular season. Atlanta closed within two games of idle Colorado in the NL wild-card race and moved to four behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

            O-FER

Baltimore's losing streak reached 11 games when the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Orioles 7-6 Monday night. Tampa Bay tied it at 6 on Willy Aybar's three-run homer in the seventh off reliever Matt Albers, one of the Rays' four home runs.

            UNFINISHED BASEMENT

Cleveland (64-92) leads Kansas City by half a game in the race to avoid last place. The Indians have never finished at the bottom of the AL Central - the team's most recent last-place finish came in 1991, with a franchise-worst 57-101 finish.

            ALL NINE

John Danks pitched his first career complete game for his first win in more than a month as Chicago beat the Cleveland Indians 6-1 Monday night.

            SPEAKING

"We had a rough start, lost a dear friend and teammate, and we didn't do much in the first half. We made this a very special season, though. We're going to celebrate tonight, and then get ready for what's next.'' - Torii Hunter after the Angels joyously celebrated clinching the AL West by soaking the jersey of Nick Adenhart, the 22-year-old pitcher who died in a car accident in April.

            SEASONS

            Sept. 29

1954 - Willie Mays made his famous over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz's long drive to center field and pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes homered off Bob Lemon in the 10th inning to lead the New York Giants to a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 1 of the World Series.

1963 - Stan Musial ended his career by going 2-for-3 as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2 in 14 innings at Busch Stadium.

1963 - John Paciorek of the Houston Colt .45s, in his only major league appearance, went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored against the New York Mets. A back injury ended his baseball career the next season.

1976 - John Montefusco of the San Francisco Giants pitched a 9-0 no-hitter over the Braves in Atlanta.

1983 - Mike Warren of the Oakland A's pitched a no-hitter to beat the Chicago White Sox, 3-0.

1986 - Minnesota's Bert Blyleven broke Robin Roberts' 1956 record of 46 home run pitches in a season when he gave up a two-out, third-inning homer to Cleveland rookie Jay Bell. It was the first major league pitch Bell had seen. Despite giving up two more homers, Blyleven was the winner when the Twins rallied in the eighth for a 6-5 victory.

1986 - Chicago Cubs rookie Greg Maddux defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 in the City of Brotherly Love. The losing pitcher was his brother, Mike, also a rookie. It was the first time brothers faced each other as rookie pitchers.

1987 - Don Mattingly's major league record sixth grand slam of the season backed the four-hit pitching of Charles Hudson to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

1996 - Brady Anderson of the Baltimore Orioles became the 14th player to reach the 50-homer mark in a 4-1 loss at Toronto. Anderson's previous season high was 21.

1996 - Vinny Castilla of the Colorado Rockies hit his 40th homer in a 12-3 victory at San Francisco. He combined with teammates Andres Galarraga (47 homers) and Ellis Burks (40) to form the first 40-homer trio on one team since the 1973 Atlanta Braves: Davey Johnson (43), Darrell Evans (41), Hank Aaron (40).

1998 - Mo Vaughn homered twice and tied a record with seven RBIs as Boston ended a 13-game postseason skid, beating Cleveland 11-3 in the AL Divisional Playoff series opener.

2001 - Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki set the major league rookie record for hits in a season but the Mariners fell to Oakland 8-4. Suzuki got his 234th hit, breaking the previous rookie mark set by Shoeless Joe Jackson with Cleveland in 1911.

2002 - San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds became the oldest player to win a National League batting title, hitting .370. Bonds had a .582 on-base percentage, easily topping the record of .553 that Ted Williams set in 1941.

2004 - Major League Baseball announced the Montreal Expos will move to Washington to begin play at RFK Stadium in the 2005 season.

2004 - Bobby Cox became the ninth manager in baseball history to win 2,000 games when Atlanta scored four runs in the seventh inning and beat the New York Mets 6-3. Of the eight managers who previously reached 2,000 wins, seven are in the Hall of Fame. The lone exception is Tony La Russa, still managing the St. Louis Cardinals. Cox's overall record was 2,000-1,530, and he has guided Atlanta to 13 straight division titles.

2007 - John Maine flirted with the first no-hitter in New York Mets history before allowing an infield single to Paul Hoover with two outs in the eighth inning of a 13-0 rout of Florida. Willie Collazo and Carlos Muniz completed the one-hitter.

2008 - Alexei Ramirez set a rookie record with his fourth grand slam of the season, and Chicago beat Detroit 8-2 in a rainout makeup, forcing a one-game tiebreaker against Minnesota for the AL Central tie.

Today's birthdays: Joe Thurston 30; Jake Westbrook 32; Heath Bell 32

1957 - With 1895 manager Jack Doyle among the 11,606 looking on, the Giants lose their last game at the Polo Grounds 9-1. 1963 - Playing in his one and ONLY Major League game, Houston Colt 45 outfielder John Paciorek, brother of Jim and Tom, went three for three (all singles), walked twice, had three runs batted in and scored four times.

1979 - J.R. Richard of the Astros shuts out the Dodgers 3-0 and fans eleven batters to break his own modern National League record for strikeouts by a right-hander. Richard finishes with 313 K's, ten more than in 1978. One of five Dodgers hits is a single by Manny Mota, his 146th pinch hit, breaking the mark of 145 formerly held by Smoky Burgess.

1986 - Minnesota's Bert Blyleven broke Robin Roberts' 1956 record of 46 home run pitches in a season, when he gave up a two-out, third-inning homer to Cleveland rookie Jay Bell. Despite giving up two more homers, Bert Blyleven was the winner when the Twins rallied in the eighth for a 6-5 victory.

1986 - Chicago Cubs rookie Greg Maddux defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3. The losing pitcher was his brother, Mike, also a rookie. It was the first time brothers faced each other as rookies.

1987 - Don Mattingly Major League record sixth grand slam of the season backed the four-hit pitching of Charlie Hudson to lead the New York Yankees to a 6-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox.

1990 - The Reds clinch the National League West title during a rain delay of their 3-1 loss to the Padres when the second-place Dodgers lose 4-3 to San Francisco. The Reds, never out of first place, are the first National League team ever to lead from wire to wire in a 162-game schedule.

1998 - Mo Vaughn homered twice and tied a record with seven RBIs as Boston ended a 13-game postseason skid, beating Cleveland 11-3 in their American League divisional playoff series opener.

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-154, 8)

For two weeks, the Twins have been sending a message to the Tigers that they are not going away. Minnesota has won 11 of its last 13 games, closing the gap on first-place Detroit to two games in the AL Central race.

Detroit may seem secure with ace Justin Verlander on the mound. But in the righthander's last nine outings vs. Minnesota, the Tigers have lost seven times.

Meanwhile, the Twins are starting rookie lefthander Brian Duensing, who has been one of baseball's best pitchers over the last month. As a starter, Duensing is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA.

This is a nice spot to grab a motivated underdog with a hot pitcher.

                    Pick: Twins

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Colorado Rockies (-171, 9.5)

The Brewers have gotten some sloppy pitching of late, playing above the total in their last four games.

They are playing out the string with a visit to hitter-friendly Coors Field, where lefthander Chris Narveson will be pitching for the first time.

While Narveson has been able to limit his runs allowed since moving into the rotation earlier this month, he has given up a homer in each of his three starts.

Rockies starter Jason Marquis led the National League in wins for most of the season but is stumbling toward the finish, allowing at least five earned runs in four of his last six starts.

                    Pick: Over

                      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

Clay Buchholz (7-3, 3.21 ERA), Boston Red Sox

Say hello to Boston’s No. 3 starter. The kid with a no-hitter already under his big league belt was called back up to the bigs in mid-July. He had some mixed results early on but he’s looked real sharp over his last six outings.

Buchholz is 4-0 with a 1.38 ERA in five September starts. The Sox have won in each of his last eight trips to the mound and the under is 6-3-1 in his last 10 games.

Felix Hernandez (17-5, 2.49), Seattle Mariners

Even when he gives up a few runs, King Felix is frigging impressive. The Mariners ace hurler struck out a season-high 11 batters in a 5-4 win over the Blue Jays last week.

He’s battling Zack Greinke and CC Sabathia for the American League Cy Young honor and he’s making a strong case for himself.

Hernandez is 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA in September.

“His stuff was unbelievable tonight,” Jays centerfielder Vernon Wells told reporters after the loss. “He left a lot of guys shaking their heads, just trying to figure out what to do to put a ball in play.”

                      Slumping

Jason Marquis (15-12, 3.98), Colorado Rockies

Marquis had been enjoying a career season, but over the last month he’s pitched like a marginal No. 5 starter. He has 6.49 ERA and batters are hitting .313 off him over his last six starts.

The Denver Post hinted that Marquis has been so ineffective that he might lose his rotation spot in the postseason. Pretty crazy seeing how he was representing the Rockies in the All-Star game just over two months ago.

Colorado is 1-5 over Marquis’ last six appearances, even though the club had been the favorite in each of those games.

Mike Pelfrey (10-12, 5.08), New York Mets

It’s hard to believe this righty was 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA after his first nine starts. He’s 1-3 with a 6.39 ERA this month. The Mets have dropped four of his last six trips to the bump and the over is 4-2 over the same stretch.

Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners [10:10 PM ET]

Athletics: The Athletics have to win the rest of their games to finish .500, but they are 17-8 this month and have won 16 of their last 21 games. It’s the first time since June of 2008 the A’s have had a winning record in a month. However, Oakland has dropped 11 of 16 to Seattle this season, including going 1-5 at Safeco Field. The A’s are 2-7 when facing Seattle starter Felix Hernandez. Rookie Trevor Cahill has been up-and-down, but is 4-0 with a 2.43 ERA in his last seven starts. He is 3-0 with a 3.05 ERA this month. Cahill is 10-12 on the season with a 4.45 ERA. The 21-year-old right-hander is 0-2 versus Seattle, but with a 1.90 ERA. He’s held the Mariners to a .227 batting average in 19 innings. Oakland is 4-1 the past five times Cahill has been an underdog.

The A’s have gone Over in 8 of their last nine games.
The Under has cashed in 7 of the last nine meetings between the two clubs.

                              Key Injuries - None

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mariners (-$2.00, O/U 7.5 under -$1.20): The Mariners are closing in on a winning season after finishing 40 games below .500 last year. Winning a major league-high 33 one-run games and Felix Hernandez are two big reasons for Seattle’s success. Hernandez is a Cy Young candidate with a 17-5 record and 2.49 ERA. He is 5-0 with a 1.57 ERA in his past six starts. The brilliant right-hander has made 27 quality starts this season and surpassed the 200-strikeout mark for the first time in his five-year career. He had a career-high 11 strikeouts in his last start against Toronto this past Thursday. Hernandez is 7-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 13 career starts against Oakland. Hernandez has faced the Athletics just once this season, back on April when he didn’t get a decision in an 8-5 victory. The Mariners have beaten the Athletics six of the last eight times they’ve faced them.

The Under is 23-7-1 in Seattle’s last 31 American League West Division games.

Key Injuries - Russell Branyan (back) is out.
                              Jack Wilson (heel) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (Side of the Day)

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Diamondbacks: Arizona is playing its final six games on the road. The disappointing Diamondbacks, 20 games below .500, have lost 17 of their last 23 games away from Chase Field. Arizona is 5-10 versus the Giants this season, including losing four of six in San Francisco. Lefty Doug Davis (8-13, 4.09 ERA) gets the call to begin this three-game series. He faced the Giants on Aug. 26 and gave up three runs and four hits in 7 2/3 innings, but did not receive a decision. Davis did defeat the Giants, 10-8, last Tuesday despite allowing five runs on 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings. Arizona is 1-9 in Davis’ past 10 road starts versus a team with a winning record. The Diamondbacks are 8-22 in Davis’ last 30 road outings. The Diamondbacks are 21-43 in their last 64 road games against San Francisco.

The Under is 15-7-3 in Arizona’s last 25 games.

Key Injuries - Chad Qualls (knee) is on the DL.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Giants (-$1.35, O/U 8): The Giants could be eliminated from postseason contention if they lose and Colorado defeats Milwaukee. The Giants have beaten the Diamondbacks in nine of the last 13 meetings. Southpaw Jonathan Sanchez faces Arizona for the second time in a week. Sanchez (7-12, 4.25 ERA) beat them last Wednesday yielding two runs and six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-2 victory. It was his first win since Aug. 21. Sanchez is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in two home starts against the Diamondbacks this season. Only once, though, in 14 months has Sanchez won consecutive starts. San Francisco is 12-27 in his last 39 starts. Infielder Juan Uribe is batting .418 with three homers and 13 RBIs in his last 14 games. He batted .385 with a homer and three RBIs during the Giants series against Arizona last week.

The Over is 11-4-2 in Sanchez’s last 17 home starts.

Key Injuries - Edgar Renteria (elbow) is out.
                              Freddy Sanchez (knee) is out.
                              Aaron Rowand (back) is questionable.

                              Bengie Molina (hand) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)
