            Wednesday, September 30

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Hawaii at Louisiana Tech
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hawaii Warriors at Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (-3.5)

A wild and wacky night is on tap when Louisiana Tech hosts Hawaii in a key WAC showdown on ESPN2 Wednesday.

            Line moves

The game opened with the Bulldogs installed as 4-point favorites. Moderate money has come to the Warriors, moving the line down to 3.5.

            MASH check

Hawaii comes into the fray a bit dinged up. On the offensive front, Starting OL Laupepa Letuli is out with a knee injury. He hopes to return next week against Fresno State. Wide receiver Jovante Taylor is listed as questionable. He has missed practice this week with a sprained ankle.

On the other side of the ball, LB Aaron Brown is out with a hamstring injury. He’s played with it the first three weeks of the season but has been forced to the sidelines this week. The good news is DE John Fonoti is expected back from a knee injury that has sidelined him the last two games. Fonoti was the leading tackler for Hawaii in 2008.

With a huge assist from the injury Gods, Louisiana Tech has managed to avoid the injury bug thus far this season.

            Weather forecast

It should be a nice night in Ruston, Louisiana Wednesday evening. The forecast calls for clear skies with temperatures in the low to mid-50’s.

Breaking it down X's and O's style

Louisiana Tech has had problems moving the ball against lined teams this season. In two games against Auburn and Navy they compiled a total of 412 yards, scoring 27 points in a pair of SU and ATS losses.

The Bulldogs tuned up 11 days ago against Nicholls State in a 48-13 romp, outgaining the Colonels, 558-271.

Hawaii has opened the 2009 season against a trio of weak sisters, Central Arkansas, Washington State and UNLV. As a result the Warriors went 2-1 SU and 2-0 ATS, while winning the stats in all three contests.

Hawaii leads the nation in pass offense at 423 yards per game. The Warriors are also first in pass efficiency and sixth in total offense. Quarterback Greg Alexander, the nation's leader in total offense and pass efficiency has thrown a touchdown pass in 10 straight games.

The Warriors rank 97th in the nation in pass defense and 58th in pass-efficiency defense, allowing an average 251 yards per game in the air. The Bulldogs gain 228 Yards per game via the airways.

Louisiana Tech’s pass defense has been a sieve in two seasons under head coach Derek Dooley. They surrendered 273 passing yards per game in 2008 and 287 in 2009.

Through the first three games of the 2009 season, the Bulldogs have allowed just 156 yards passing per game. But that stat line is nothing more like fool's gold. The fact of the matter is the Bulldogs have played three run-dominated teams in Auburn, Navy and Nicholls State.

"Everything we've been doing for three weeks, we just say, 'Forget about it. It doesn't work anymore,'" Dooley said in the Monroe News Star. "Now we have to switch our personnel around, switch who is in the game, and change the whole scheme. ... It's not like they're having to learn a whole new defense, but everything's different. It's four-wide, it's throwing it every down."

            Who goes bowling?

Both teams managed to land bowl bids in 2008.

The Warriors hosted the Hawaii Bowl for a fifth time in six years, the first under new coach Greg McMakin last season.

The Bulldogs defeated Northern Illinois in the Independence Bowl last year. It took head coach Dooley two seasons to turn La. Tech into a bowlers. He inherited a 3-10 team in 2006 and proceeded to win five and eight games in his first two years with the program.

Should both teams become bowl-eligible in 2009, the winner of tonight’s contest gains an inside track to a bowl bid this season.

            The history book says

Hawaii has had its way with Louisiana Tech this decade, going 6-1 SU and ATS. However, the host in this series has brought home the bacon each of the last five games in a row.

Home teams on regular season games on Wednesdays are 22-13-1 ATS, including 16-4-1 when playing off a win.

Hawaii at Louisiana Tech [ESPN2 | 8:00 PM ET]

Hawaii: The Warriors open Western Athletic Conference play having covered six of their last seven WAC contests last year, while also covering five of their past six away matchups. This marks Hawaii’s third straight game on the mainland. The Warriors were idle last week, though, following a 34-33 loss to UNLV. The winning touchdown occurred with 36 seconds left and dropped Hawaii’s record to 2-1. Led by quarterback Greg Alexander, the Warriors are averaging 33 points on the season. Alexander has passed for more than 1,200 yards and nine touchdowns. He has hit on 67 percent of his passes. Wide receivers Greg Salas and Rodney Bradley are each averaging more than 20 yards per catch. Hawaii has covered nine of its past 12 games. The Warriors, however, have lost eight of the past nine times to Louisiana Tech on the road. Hawaii won 24-14 against the Bulldogs last year at home.

The Warriors are 19-7-1 ATS when facing a team with a losing record.
The Over has cashed in 21 of Hawaii’s last 31 conference games.

Key Injuries - Defensive end Paipai Falemalu (ankle) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 26

Louisiana Tech (-4.5, O/U 55.5): Louisiana Tech is looking to even its record at 2-2 in its WAC opener. The Bulldogs have managed just a combined 27 points in their last two games - road losses to Navy and Auburn - after opening with a 48-13 victory against Nicholls State. The Bulldogs are young with just 10 seniors. One of those seniors, Daniel Porter, is bidding to become the school’s all-time leading rusher but has been held to just 134 yards rushing this season. Quarterback Ross Jenkins has tried to take up the slack throwing for 220 yards per game as opposing teams stack the line keying on Porter. The Bulldogs are surrendering more than 400 yards per game. They haven’t faced a foe yet that passes as much as Hawaii. The Bulldogs, like the Warriors, were idle last week. Louisiana Tech is 5-13 against the spread following a bye week.

The Over is 5-1 in the Bulldogs’ last six home contests.
Louisiana Tech is 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games in September.

Key Injuries - Running back D.J. Morrow (hamstring) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 30 (OVER - Total of the Day)

Side of the Day is in MLB today.

Colorado Buffaloes at West Virginia Mountaineers (-17, 54.5)

                  Line movement

West Virginia opened as a 17-point favorite and the number has not moved at all with the exception of a half-point in a couple shops. The juice will probably be the only thing that moves since we’re sitting on a key number.

Like the pointspread, the total has not moved since opening at 54.5.

                  Injuries

Starting defensive lineman Scooter Berry is out for West Virginia, but linebacker Reed Williams is expected to rejoin the starting lineup after sitting out the team’s last game.

“He is our defense,” Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart told the Charleston Gazette of Williams. “You take a guy like Reed Williams and J.T. Thomas and Scooter and Chris Neild. These guys are anchors, and not just in their play, but their mentality.”

The Mountaineers starting quarterback Jarrett Brown made the injury report, but he’ll start and should be fine.

He hurt his non-throwing shoulder during a loss against Auburn on Sept. 19.

                  Weather

The recent bad weather in the northeast will not affect this game come Thursday. The forecast calls for party cloudy skies with a temperature of 58 degrees and virtually no wind.

                  Colorado’s road woes

The Buffaloes have hit the road only once this season and were blasted in Toledo against the Rockets from the MAC. They were outgained by 173 total yards including 210 yards on the ground (305-95). That rushing differential is not something the Buffaloes want to continue against Noel Devine and the Mountaineers.

Losing on the road has become commonplace for the Boulder Boys. They’re on a seven-game road losing steak and are just 2-13 in 15 road dates under head coach Dan Hawkins. Both wins came in 2007 and one of those was against a horrible Baylor team where Colorado was favored by nine points.

Those 13 losses have come by an average of 18.5 points, which is right around the amount of points they are getting Thursday night. On the positive side, five of those losses were by single digits.

                  Thursday home dominance continues

Thursday night last season was a cash cow for the home teams that were featured on ESPN. Of the 15 weeks during the regular season, the home team went 12-3 straight up and 12-3 against the spread. The public made a killing taking the home teams.

This season, the home team is 4-1 straight up and 3-2 against the number, so the trend is keeping up again in 2009. One of those wins was South Carolina last week over Mississippi as an underdog so the home favorites are 3-1 outright and 2-2 ATS.

                  Red zone perfection

Colorado is tied for the nation's lead in red zone offense, scoring at a 100 percent clip in 12 opportunities.

Sixteen teams in the country are perfect inside the red zone, but the Buffaloes are tied with Georgia for the fifth most trips without being shutout.

West Virginia has been less than stout on defense this season so Colorado has a chance to keep the streak alive. The Mountaineers are 35th in total defense but 83rd in scoring defense. Opponents have gotten into the red zone only nine times but they have come away with points in eight of those trips including six touchdowns.

Colorado at West Virginia [ESPN | 7:45 PM ET]

Colorado: Colorado coach Dan Hawkins’ summer prediction that his team would win 10 games isn’t looking very good as the Buffaloes are 1-2. Colorado, which plays in the Big 12 Conference, has lost to a Mountain West team (Colorado State 23-17) and to a MAC school (Toledo 54-38). The Buffaloes have yet to display a vertical passing threat and their run-blocking has been poor. Leading rusher, Rodney Stewart, has gained only 175 yards, an average of 58.3 yards per game. Colorado running backs are averaging just 3.1 yards per rush. Junior quarterback Cody Hawkins, the son of the coach, is hitting 52 percent of his passes for 755 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. The Buffaloes have failed to cover in eight of their last 11 games. This is Colorado’s final non-conference regular-season game. The Buffaloes are 8-20 against the spread when taking points.

The Under is 12-4 in Colorado’s last 16 non-conference games.
                      The Buffaloes are 2-11
ATS in their last 13 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - Running back Darrell Scott (knee) is probable

PROJECTED SCORE: 19 (Side of the Day)

West Virginia (-17, O/U 54.5): Early money has moved the Mountaineers from an opening 15-point favorite up to minus 17. West Virginia has revenge from a 17-14 loss to Colorado last year and wants to rebound from a 41-30 loss to Auburn during its last game when it committed six turnovers. The 2-1 Mountaineers are paced by quarterback Jarret Brown and running back Noel Devine. Brown has completed 68 percent of his throws for 798 yards and five touchdowns with five interceptions. Devine is averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He has rushed for more than 1,600 yards going back to the start of last year. West Virginia is limiting opponents to just 83 yards on the ground per game. The Mountaineers accumulated more than 500 yards of total offense versus Auburn, but were done in by a 6-1 turnover difference. The Mountaineers have committed 10 turnovers in their last two games.

The Mountaineers are 4-9 ATS versus a team with a losing mark.
The Over has cashed in 7 of West Virginia’s last nine games.

Key Injuries - Defensive lineman Scooter Berry (shoulder) is questionable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 36

Southern Mississippi at Alabama-Birmingham [8:00 PM ET]

Southern Miss (-10, O/U 60.5): Southern Mississippi is going to be without star running back Damion Fletcher (groin) and wide receiver DeAndre Brown (shoulder). Fletcher has rushed for a team-high 371 yards and scored four touchdowns. Brown is tied for first in team receptions with 13. The Golden Eagles are 3-1 with impressive victories against Virginia and Central Florida. However, they lost last week to Kansas, 35-28, although covering an 11 ½-point road spread. Quarterback Austin Davis is completing 68 percent of his passes for 931 yards. He has an eight-to-one touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Golden Eagles racked up 463 yards rushing and scored a school-record nine touchdowns in walloping Alabama Birmingham, 70-14, at home last season. The Golden Eagles amassed more than 600 yards of offense in that 56-point victory. Southern Mississippi has covered six of the last seven in the series. They have covered the past three times in Birmingham.

The Golden Eagles are 8-1 ATS the past nine times they’ve been road chalk.

Key Injuries - Running back Damion Fletcher (groin) is out.
Wide receiver DeAndre Brown (shoulder) is out.
Wide receiver Johdrick Morris (concussion) is out.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 35

Alabama Birmingham: This is a huge revenge spot for the Blazers after their embarrassing lost last year to Southern Mississippi. Alabama Birmingham has lost all nine meetings to Southern Mississippi in the series history. The Blazers are 11-4-1 against the spread in their last 16 games as a home underdog. Alabama Birmingham doesn’t come into this matchup with much momentum, though, having lost and failed to cover three in a row after a 44-24 season-opening victory against Rice. The Blazers’ losses have been to SMU, Troy and Texas A&M on the road last week, 56-19. Those three foes averaged a combined 350 yards passing and more than 500 total yards against the Blazers. Quarterback Joe Webb has accounted for 1,053 of Alabama Birmingham’s 1,552 totals yards of offense. He leads the team in rushing with 432 yards and has accounted for nine touchdowns. He’s been intercepted five times.

The Under is 7-3-1 in the Blazers’ last 11 games as a home ‘dog.

Key Injuries - Wide receiver Mark Ferrell (arm) is doubtful.
Wide receiver Frantrell Forrest (knee) is doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 25 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        What bettors need to know:
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah State Aggies at Brigham Young Cougars (-24, 63.5)

                        Line Movements

BYU comes into the game as a heavy 24-point favorite with the total sitting at 65.

                        Shootout Potential

Both of these offenses are explosive and both have the potential to put up some huge numbers.

After scoring just 14 points in a win against Oklahoma, BYU has averaged 41 points in its last three games. The Aggies are averaging 489 yards per game and 33 ppg.

The key for the Cougars is stopping Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel.

"He runs the ball very, very well. Guys who are able to do that, they just keep plays alive," BYU d-linemen Jan Jorgensen told the Deseret News. "That's the toughest thing. They can sit back in the pocket, the pressure comes, and they can escape it. They can run around and just wait for receivers to get open.

"That's the hardest part about playing a mobile quarterback - when a play should be dead, they're able to keep it going. It kind of wears down a defense and it makes things frustrating."

BYU’s defense has been spotty. The unit allowed just 265 yards to the Sam Bradford-less Sooners but allowed 54 points and 512 yards in a loss to Florida State. Utah State is allowing 486 YPG and 36 points per game. In their first two road games of the season, the Aggies allowed 519 and 573 yards in losses to Utah and Texas A&M.

The over is a combined 5-0-1 for both teams last three games.

                        Pinkie problem

BYU top running back Harvey Unga has put his hamstring issues behind him but he will be handling the pigskin with a broken pinkie finger on his right hand against Utah State.

“It doesn’t seem to bother him, and so it is not going to bother us,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall told the Salt Lake Tribune.

                        ATS Trends

Utah State has been a 20+ point underdog twice this season and came away with the ATS win both times. They were 20.5-point underdogs against both Utah and Texas A&M and lost by 18 and 8 points in those games.

BYU was an 18.5-point favorite against Tulane and an 18-point favorite against Colorado State. The Cougars got an easy 51-point victory against Tulane and squeaked away with the ATS win – 19 points – against Colorado State. They are, however, just 1-6 ATS in their last seven games as a 20+ point favorite.

                        History

BYU is 13-0 SU and 3-0 ATS at home all time against the Aggies. The Cougars were favored by 19, 19.5 and 26 points in the three ATS victories. Last year BYU was a 29-point favorite at Utah State. The team had a 34-0 lead in the 3rd quarter but allowed two late touchdowns, which allowed Utah State to get the cover.

                        Weather

Chance of rain and snow on Thursday in Provo, Utah. Clear weather is expected for Friday night with temps around 40 degrees.

                          Game of the Day
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Louisville Cardinals (+6.5, 54)

                          Line Movements

Oddsmakers have Pitt as a 6.5-point road favorite with the total listed at 54.

Will the real Pittsburgh Panthers please stand up?

Pittsburgh is coming off an embarrassing loss to North Carolina State, their first of the season. Pitt led 31-17 late in the third quarter but couldn’t hold the lead and fell 38-31 to the Wolfpack.

NC State had absolutely no problem moving the ball against the Panthers defense. Pitt was out-gained by 230 yards, had 16 less first downs and had a 14-minute deficit in time of possession.

The Panthers are 3-1, but wins against FCS Youngstown State, Buffalo and Navy don’t really say too much about this team. Now they are coming off of a loss and playing as a favorite at Louisville. They are just 1-7 SU in the last eight meetings with the Cards.

                          In need of a victory

Louisville is 1-2 this season. They defeated FCS Indiana State to kick off the season and then had understandable back-to-back road losses to hated rival Kentucky and then Utah.

There has been chatter of head coach Steve Kragthorpe being on the hot seat and a victory to begin Big East play would greatly help his cause. To win, Kragthorpe will need better play out of his quarterback than the Cards have been getting thus far.

Starter Justin Burke is completing just 51 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and four interceptions this season. Burke will likely have his best opportunity to put up big numbers against the Panthers; Pitt has allowed 281 passing yards per game and eight passing touchdowns in its last three games.

                          Hit somebody

The Cardinals keep their practices pretty light when it comes to contact. But after a dismal tackling performance against Utah last weekend, head coach Steve Kragthorpe is turning up the intensity for his defense.

While his players aren’t taking each other’s heads off in drills, they have emphasized the importance on finishing tackles without actually finishing the tackle.

“What we do, you've got to get your hat in position, you've got to get your hands in position,” Kragthorpe told the Courier Journal. “You don't actually finish the tackle, but you are making contact. You're not taking guys to the ground, but you're doing everything that the tackle would involve.”

Louisville is last in the conference in tackles for a loss and allowed the Utes offense to rush for 214 yards despite the fact that their star running back, Matt Asiata, left the game with an injury.

                          Neon Dion

Pitt freshman running back Dion Lewis is turning heads, not just in the Big East, but across the country.

The speedy 5-foot-8 firecracker out of Albany has totaled 493 yards rushing, while catching 66 yards passing for eight touchdowns in just three games. Heading into this short week, the first-year star is itching to get back out on the field and put the loss to North Carolina State behind him.

Lewis is focused on finishing drives against the Cardinals. The Panthers converted just 2-of-10 third-down opportunities versus the Wolfpack and have a third-down completion percentage of 34 percent on the season (15-for-44).

"We've got to get better on third down," Lewis told the Tribune Review. "We have to pay better attention to details. We couldn't get going the way we would like because we were going three-and-out."

                          Revenge

Last year Louisville turned the ball over four times and lost, 41-7, to the Panthers for the first time since 1990. The Cardinals will be out for revenge as home dogs against the Panthers.

                          Weather

There is a 90 percent chance of rain in Louisville for Friday, but the rain is expected to be over by game-time with temps in the mid 40’s.

College football Top 25 cheat sheet: Week 5
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of Top 25 teams are off this week, including the top two, but we still get three matchups featuring two ranked teams - including the fourth straight ranked opponent for Miami. All news/injury updates as of Thursday.

Utah State at No. 21 BYU (-24, 65)

Don’t look for an Aggie upset, as they are 1-49 all time against teams ranked in the AP Top 25 and 0-39 on the road. USU has lost its past 13 games played on a day other than Saturday. But the Aggie offense is rolling, having totaled 83 points the past two weeks behind QB Diondre Borel.

Since 1987, these teams have played 12 times on a Friday night and BYU has won them all. The Cougars have has won nine straight in the series overall by an average of 18.8 points. Last year’s game was 34-14.

                            No. 3 Alabama at Kentucky (+15.5, 47)

It’s the Tide’s first true road game, so perhaps QB Greg McElroy will struggle to adjust to all the noise. He has looked great so far, as does the defense, which is second nationally. Alabama’s Nick Saban has never lost to UK in his coaching career.

This has been one of the more lopsided series in the SEC, with Alabama leading all-time 34-2-1. Interestingly, it’s just the third meeting on the Kentucky campus in the past 20 years, so maybe that helps the Cats stay close. They did last year, losing by three.

                            No. 4 LSU at No. 14 Georgia (-3, 51.5)

That Tiger defense that allowed 52 points in a loss to Georgia last year hasn’t looked good against the pass this year, but it has been opportunistic as LSU is plus-7 in turnover margin, good for fifth in the nation. Since 2002, LSU is 47-10 when ranked in the top 10.

The Dawgs have won the last three matchups with LSU and haven’t lost to the Tigers since the 2003 SEC Championship Game. Georgia, which is the only team Les Miles hasn’t beaten at LSU, hasn’t lost in this series between the hedges since 1986.

No. 6 Virginia Tech at Duke (+16.5, 47)

Last year’s 14-3 game with Duke might have been a bit of a fluke, as Tech turned the ball over five times in the first half. The Hokies have won eight in a row in this series and despite last year’s close call, they have outscored the Blue Devils 138-17 in the past four wins.

Duke should get the benefit of a natural letdown from the Hokies in the wake of last week’s big win over Miami. And the Blue Devils hung close last year, with possession and down just 7-3 with two minutes left in the game. A Hokie pick made the final score 14-3.

No. 7 Southern Cal at No. 19 California (+4.5, 47.5)

USC has won five in row over the Golden Bears and seven of the past eight. If Cal star Jahvid Best thought Oregon’s defense was good, he should know that the Trojans are allowing less than 60 yards rushing per game and opponents have scored just three touchdowns overall.

There’s a chance the Bears won’t have to deal with Pac-10 sack leader Nick Perry; the USC defensive end’s status is up in the air with a bruised knee. It’s hard to imagine Best having two bad games in a row – he had just 55 yards against Oregon last week.

                            No. 8 Oklahoma at No. 21 Miami (+7.5, 49.5)

Obviously the potential key to OU covering or winning could be the status of Sam Bradford. It’s still not clear if he will return, but coach Bob Stoops said this mid-week: "He has picked up his number of throws, the distance and his velocity each day." Stoops may not make the call until Saturday.

UM should get three key players back who sat out last week against Virginia Tech: WR Aldarius Johnson, defensive tackle Marcus Forston and defensive end Andrew Smith. And the Canes won’t play in a downpour like last week when they looked totally out of sorts.

No. 9 Ohio State at Indiana (+17.5, 47.5)

The Buckeye defense is rolling, having blanked Toledo and Illinois in back-to-back weeks for their first consecutive shutouts since 1996. Indiana has lost 14 straight against Ohio State by an average of 22.7 points.

This is not a typical Hoosier team, as its “pistol” offensive formation seems to be working. IU, behind QB Ben Chappell and RB Darius Willis, is averaging nearly 400 yards and gained 467 in a game it should have won at Michigan last week if not for red-zone failures.

Southern Methodist at No. 10 TCU (-28, 49.5)

SMU had two weeks to prepare for this game, and the Mustangs are among the nation’s leaders in picking off opposing passers with 11. This team should be 3-0 but blew a 24-7 lead against Washington State last time out.

TCU is one of the best home teams in the country, having won 32 of its past 36 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. And it has held its opponent to seven points or less in 12 of its last 21 home games. In the past 16 home games, TCU has outscored opponents by an average score of 38-9.

No. 11 Cincinnati at Miami of Ohio (+28.5, 57)

This might be a bit of a trap for Cincy, having to face a winless MAC team before a big nationally-televised game at South Florida 12 days later. Did you know this is the oldest non-conference rivalry in the country?

Frankly, the only way Miami covers is probably if Cincy isn’t fully focused. The Redhawks have lost nine games in a row and have been shut out twice in four games this year while committing 16 turnovers.

No. 13 Penn State at Illinois (+7, 46)

The Nittany Lions know their season and Big Ten hopes are on the line, as another loss probably eliminates them from a BCS bowl. RB Evan Royster should have a field day against an Illinois defense that allowed 236 yards on the ground to Ohio State last week.

The Illini might get PSU without star linebacker Sean Lee, who sat out last week’s loss to Iowa and is very questionable for this week with a sprained knee. Illinois must get the ball more to Arrelious Benn, who has only five catches.

                            No. 15 Houston at UTEP (+14.5, 68.5)

How on earth can a Miners’ defense that allowed 64 points to Texas last week stop a Houston offense that is second in the nation in total yards, third in passing yards and eighth in scoring?

It’s the C-USA opener for UTEP and the Miners have averaged 41 points per game in conference openers during the Mike Price era and have never scored fewer than 21 points in one. So maybe the over is the best bet here.

Arkansas State at No. 17 Iowa (-21.5, 46)

ASU will try and control the ball to stay close. The Red Wolves rush for 190.3 yards per game and have scored 11 of their 13 TDs on the ground. Reggie Arnold averages 6.3 yards per carry.

This is the absolute definition of a trap game for Iowa, as the Hawkeyes come off that huge win at Penn State and now face an out-of-conference lightweight before playing Michigan next week. Plus, Arkansas State has been outscored 121-22 in its last four road games against Top 25 teams.

                            No. 18 Mississippi at Vanderbilt (+9.5, 45)

How will Ole Miss respond to that loss in South Carolina last time out and with a crucial game against Alabama next week? Jevan Snead is completing less than 50 percent of his passes and was picked four times by Vandy last year.

Vandy upset set Ole Miss in Oxford last year and has won the past two at home in this series. The Commodores will get CB Jamie Graham back after he sat out last week with a concussion, but second-leading rusher Zac Stacy is likely out.

No. 20 Michigan at Michigan State (-3, 56.5)

It’s the first road game of the year for Michigan, so that could be a challenge for freshman QB Tate Forcier. He has a sore shoulder but will play Saturday. The Wolverines have won the past three meetings in East Lansing.

It’s a crucial game for 1-3 Michigan State, which got a load of confidence with last year’s 35-21 win in Ann Arbor. The Spartans’ passing attack (320.8 ypg) has been their strength, and Michigan has had its issues against the pass, allowing nearly 245 yards per game.

Washington State at No. 25 Oregon (-33, 54.5)

Wazzu’s passing offense has been one of the worst in the country, but the Cougars are turning to true freshman QB Jeff Tuel this week for his first start in hopes of a spark. He was 14-of-22 for 130 yards and one interception with 34 yards rushing last week vs. USC.

In theory, this game shouldn’t be close. But the Ducks figure to have a letdown after crushing Cal. Plus, Oregon lost top cornerback Walter Thurmond for the season in that win over the Bears. The Wazzu pass offense needs all the help it can get.
