Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NFL stages its Week 3 contests, the Yankees and BoSox finish their set, and the drivers of NASCAR take to the track.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's just one game between unbeaten teams on the NFL's schedule for Sunday, and that's San Francisco at Minnesota. The 49ers (2-0 straight-up, 2-0 against-the-spread) kept their perfect record intact last time out by beating Seattle 23-10. Frank Gore ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns in that contest. The Vikings (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) got 155 passing yards and two TD strikes from Brett Favre last week in their 27-13 win over Detroit. The oddsmakers have the Vikings as 6-5-point home favorites for Sunday, with the game's total at 40 points.

The other 1:00pm ET games for Sunday are Cleveland at Baltimore (-13), Washington (-6.5) at Detroit, Jacksonville at Houston (-3.5), Kansas City at Philadelphia, Green Bay (-6.5) at St. Louis, the Giants (-6.5) at Tampa Bay, Tennessee at the Jets (-3), and Atlanta at New England (-4). The Falcons (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) will be trying to hand the Patriots (1-1 SU, 0-2 ATS) a second straight defeat. Tom Brady and company were beaten 16-9 by the Jets last week.

The late-afternoon games for Sunday has New Orleans (-6) at Buffalo, Chicago (-2) at Seattle, Pittsburgh (-4) at Cincinnati, Denver (-1.5) at Oakland, and Miami at San Diego (-5.5). The primetime matchup is then Indianapolis at Arizona (-2.5). The Colts (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) got past the Dolphins 27-23 last week, with Peyton Manning throwing for 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The Cardinals (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) rolled to a 31-17 road win over the Jaguars in their last game.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Red Sox and Yankees conclude their series on Sunday afternoon, with Paul Byrd (1-2, 6.04 ERA) taking on Andy Pettitte (13-7, 4.15 ERA). Righthander Byrd will be looking to bounce back from a loss to the Royals last time out in which he gave up five runs over 6 2-3 innings of work. Lefthander Pettitte (sore shoulder) returned to action against the Angels on Monday but took the loss, allowing three runs over his six innings of work. The Yankees are 7-3 in Pettitte's last 10 outings.

Also on the AL schedule for Sunday: Baltimore at Cleveland, Seattle at Toronto, Detroit at the White Sox, Minnesota at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at Texas, and Oakland at the Angels. The NL slate: the Mets at Florida, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at Washington, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Houston, the Cubs at San Francisco, San Diego at Arizona, and St. Louis at Colorado. Kyle Lohse (6-8, 4.81 ERA) is slated to start for the Cardinals in that contest, while the Rockies will counter with Jorge De La Rosa (15-9, 4.42 ERA).

Roaring around the track . . .

The second race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup goes on Sunday afternoon, with the drivers taking the track at Dover International Speedway for the AAA 400. Mark Martin took the checkered flag in the Chase opener in New Hampshire last weekend, with Denny Hamlin and Juan Montoya finishing second and third in that event. Jimmie Johnson won the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover back in May, and he's just behind Tony Stewart (12/5) at 5/2 odds to drive to the championship this season. Jeff Gordon (9/2) and Martin (5/1) trail the leaders on that odds list.

As well, Formula 1 will stage the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, with Rubens Barrichello looking to make it back-to-back victories. The Brawn-Mercedes driver won the Italian Grand Prix last time out, and he also finished first in the European Grand Prix back on August 23. Still, the Brazilian trails teammate Jenson Button 80-66 in the drivers championship as the season enters its final stretch. Fernando Alonso won the Singapore Grand Prix last year; Button ended up 9th.

Caged Panthers

Carolina will need to dip deep into its depth chart to avoid losing its third straight game against the Cowboys (-9) Monday night. The Panthers will be out starting linebacker Na’il Diggs, safety Chris Harris and stud rookie defensive end Everette Brown. The Panthers defensive line has managed a meager two sacks in two games and must do more against Tony Romo in Dallas.

J.J. back on track

Jimmie Johnson appears ready to defend his three straight cup titles. Johnson, who is just 35 points behind Mark Martin in the standings, took the pole for Sunday’s race at Dover by finishing a lap of 157.356 mph. Johnson led a career-high 298 laps in a race at the Monster Mile earlier this year, and listed at +250 is a solid pick to bring home the checkered flag.

United we stand

D.C. United is ready to rock the Earthquakes. The teams played to a 2-2 draw earlier this year in California, but San Jose likely will be without striker Arturo Alvarez, who is second on the team with five goals. United also is 6-1-5 at home this season, while the Earthquakes are an abysmal 0-8-3. Don’t be afraid to take D.C. at -1 (-110) or even test the money line at -200 to win.

Wright has wrong stuff

David Wright won’t be in the lineup for the Mets on Sunday afternoon. Kevin Burkhardt, SNY’s field reporter, twittered on Saturday afternoon that the start third baseman would sit out the final game of the team’s series against the Marlins. Wright, who has struggled since returning from the DL earlier this month, has struck out 30 times in 23 games. Overall, the Mets have lost seven of 10 and are scoring a meager 4.14 runs per game.

Perry for president

Can Kenny Perry keep stunning the field at the Tour Championship? Kenny birdied the opening four holes of the third round as he cruised to a two-shot lead at eight under-par entering the final round on Sunday. The course plays great to his long driving style and his short game has given him the ability to rise to the top of the field. The only thing standing in his way? His playing partner: Tiger Woods. Perry, however, is used to high stakes, ranking fourth in the world. Posted at +200 to bring home the title, he is a much better play than Tiger at -175.

Six-pack for Sunday

-- Sunday is first time since 1984 Jets/Giants are both playing at 1pm without playing each other. Jets were scheduled at 4:15 but because of Jewish holidays starting at sundown, the game was moved to 1pm.

-- Adam Wainwright struck out 11, gave up 10 hits, threw 130 pitches as Cardinals won 6-3 at Coors Field, clinching the NL Central.

-- Dodgers also clinched a playoff berth Sunday, scoring five times in 8th inning to beat the Pirates 8-4.

-- White Sox lost their last eight games not started by Jake Peavy.

-- A's rallied from 9-2 deficit to beat Angels 15-10, their 16th win in last 20 games. If Oakland can finish 6-1, they'll end the year 81-81.

-- Colorado's Wild Card lead is down to 2.5 games over the Braves.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) I had a friend in college named Mike, and boy he hated the Georgia Bulldogs, the Vince Dooley/Herschel Walker Dawgs. I'm sure to this day the Lindsay Scott play against Florida still drives him crazy. He used to always say how lucky they were, how they were always lucky.

Well Mike, wherever you are, Les Miles is this generation's version of Vince Dooley. Lot of close wins, lot of people thinking he's lucky, but all the guy does is win. LSU stopped Mississippi State at the one-yard line to escape Starkville Saturday with a 30-26 win. Lot of people will think he was lucky (LSU had kick return for TD and a defensive TD), but isn't luck where preparation meets opportunity? I think it is.

12) I looked at this week's card and wasn't too fired up about possibility of any great games, but boy there were some terrific ones; Houston's win over Texas Tech, LSU's goal line stand, Notre Dame's last minute win at Purdue, BC's overtime win over Wake Forest, Indiana-Michigan game and the Arizona State-Georgia game (yup Mike, the Dawgs got lucky).

11) Georgia is overscheduled: @ Oklahoma State, South Carolina, then @ Arkansas, then Arizona State, then LSU. Their kids are tired-- they're lucky they got past ASU Saturday. The LSU game will be brutal. Laugh if you will, but scheduling a weak Sun Belt team has distinct benefits.

10) Indiana got hosed on an INT call on its last drive at Michigan- they played their hearts out, trying to win in a stadium where they last won in 1967, when only two Indiana assistant coaches were alive. No dice, despite mild-mannered coach Lynch going off on the sideline. Too bad. Michigan is 4-0, and no one seems to care they practiced too much.

9) No matter who coaches Clemson, they lose games at this time of the year you'd think they have no business losing. TCU beat them 14-10 in a game where the Mountain West gained a measure of respect. The folks at the IPTAY (I Pay Tremendous $$ A Year) booster club ain't happy.

8) Wake Forest had ball 1st-and-goal on BC's 4 in OT, trailing 27-24, but senior QB Skinner fumbled when hit, and Deacons lost another tight game to the Eagles. Senior QBs are supposed to be heroes, aren't they?

7) Hope you enjoyed having Kevin Sumlin as your coach, Houston- it will take very deep pockets to keep him with the Cougars now that he has Houston in the top 25 for the first time in almost twenty years, and wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Tech on his resume. I could see Jim Harbaugh going to the NFL and Sumlin going to Stanford.

6) Not only did Miami get crunched 31-7 at Virginia Tech, it poured the whole second half, and no one gave 'canes' coach Randy Shannon a hat. Poor guy looked like the most miserable person in America.

5) Iowa has now won seven of its last eight games against Penn State.

4) I am in favor of the immediate firing of any TV sportscaster who says "unranked Stanford upset 24th-ranked Washington this week." Cardinal were favored by 9.5 points, so no it wasn't an upset, not even close.

3) What a day for the South Florida Bulls; playing their first game in the last four years without QB Grothe, freshman Daniels did enough to win in his first college start (also in his hometown of Tallahassee), as Bulls forced/recovered four fumbles in a stunning 17-7 win at Florida State.

2) It is September 27, and six top 10 teams already have been beaten by unranked teams. College football is crazy, you just never know. Makes handicapping games a lot more challenging, and a little less fun. :-)

1) I am probably the 100,000th person to ask this question, but why in the name of Noah Brindise was Tim Tebow throwing the ball in a game Florida led 31-7? If he was so sick, let him hand off in a game that was over about 45 seconds after it started. Why was he passing???????? Its like they really believe he is Superman, forgetting he is still a kid.

Baltimore Orioles at Cleveland Indians (-134, 9.5)

Let’s be honest about one thing: the Orioles are not a good team, especially on the road.

Baltimore is 33 games under .500 and has an AL-low 24 road wins. Even worse, Baltimore is a horrid, 2-8 in its past 10 games. The team has resorted to utilizing many young position players as it fights its way through yet another losing campaign.

Cleveland, however, is just 1-9 in its past 10 games. The Tribe is averaging a meager 3.1 runs per game over that stretch and also has begun to give younger players a longer look.

The result when these two teams meet are low scoring affairs that see young, power pitchers shut down aggressive, young lineups. Four of the team’s five meetings this season have gone under the total. And with a high number like 9.5 posted for Sunday, expect more of the same.

Pick: Under

Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels (-225, 8.5)

Don’t look now, but the Athletics may be onto something. The team is in last place in the AL West, but has a positive run differential (+31) and has won 10 of its past 12 games.

The Halos have taken the season series against the Athletics, but Oakland has won three of the past five against the division leaders and is playing out the stretch like gangbusters. The key for Oakland has been its pitching, which is allowing just 3.4 runs per game during its hot streak.

Meantime, the Angels have dropped six of 10 and are struggling at the plate. Los Angeles is averaging less than four runs per game and needs to get its offense back on track before the postseason begins.

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Zach Greinke (Kansas City Royals)

The ace pitcher should start clearing a spot on his mantle for the AL Cy Young.

Greinke (15-8, 2.08 ERA) has been nothing short of dominant in his past six starts. Over that span, he has allowed just six earned runs over 43 innings. In his most recent start, a 5-1 win over Boston, he gave up only two hits over six innings. Opponents are batting just .228 against Greinke this season, who leads the AL in ERA and has pitched six complete games.

"I am biased," Trey Hillman, the Royals manager told the Associated Press. "Part of that bias is I've seen all his starts. I have a very difficult time believing there is anybody better in the major leagues, that's as good a pitcher as Zack Greinke is in the year 2009."

David Price (Tampa Bay Rays)

The Rays may finally have found their ace of the future.

Bearing with an up-and-down season, Price (9-7, 4.41 ERA) has won his past two decisions and finally is pitching like the star the team believed he was at the beginning of the year. In his past three outings – all quality starts – he has allowed just six earned runs in his past 19 2-3 innings. And Price says his best is yet to come.

"I did what I had to do," Price told the Associated Press. "I didn't have my good stuff and I was able to go out there and compete with what I did have and that's good."

Slumping

Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants)

It’s no surprise that the Giants have fallen off the pace for the NL Wild Card at the same time Cain has begun to struggle.

Cain (13-7, 2.99 ERA) has lost each of his past three starts and has given up at least four runs in three of his past four outings, seeing his ERA balloon by more than half a run. In his most recent outing, Cain was tagged for seven earned runs on eight hits in just 2 1-3 innings against the Rockies.

"It's been bad. All of us have not done what we wanted to do," Cain told the Associated Press. "It's very disappointing. I feel like I let a lot of guys down."

Patrick Misch (New York Mets)

The 28 year old has provided little more than batting practice for opposing lineups this year.

Misch (1-4, 5.59 ERA) was called up on August 25, but has failed to make an impact in the Big Apple. The left-hander has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his past three starts and has struggled to get past the sixth inning. In his most recent start, he gave up eight earned runs on seven hits, including three home runs, in just 1 1-3 innings against the Braves.

"I really threw bad pitches," Misch told the Associated Press. "I Just elevated, too much plate. The last two starts I haven't pitched down low."

-CC Sabathia, Yankees, allowed one hit in seven innings to become the major leagues' first 19-game winner, and New York closed in on the AL East title with a 3-0 victory over Boston.

-Adam Wainwright, Cardinals, struck out 11 in eight innings to earn his 19th win and St. Louis clinched the NL Central crown with a 6-3 victory at Colorado, becoming the first big league team to win its division.

-Denard Span, Twins, had four hits and a career-high six RBIs to lead Minnesota past Kansas City 11-6 for its 11th victory in 12 games.

-Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, got four hits and drove in four runs, giving him at least 100 RBIs for the sixth consecutive season, and Detroit rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5.

-Ryan Braun, Brewers, hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give Milwaukee a 7-5 win over Philadelphia. It was Braun's 30th home run of the season and second career game-ending shot.

-Marlon Byrd, Rangers, homered twice, including a grand slam during an 11-run fifth inning that carried Texas to a 15-3 rout of Tampa Bay.

-Adam Lind, Blue Jays, homered twice, including a game-ending solo shot in the 10th inning that gave Toronto a 5-4 victory over Seattle.

-Chad Tracy, Diamondbacks, snapped an 0-for-18 slump with a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh inning that rallied Arizona to an 8-5 victory over San Diego.

The Dodgers locked up their fourth playoff appearance in six years, getting a two-run single from pinch-hitter Jim Thome during a four-run eighth inning that sent them to an 8-4 victory at Pittsburgh. Los Angeles manager Joe Torre is headed to the postseason for a record-tying 14th straight time - only Atlanta's Bobby Cox has accomplished the feat - after the NL West leaders assured themselves of at least the wild card.

ICHIRO IRRITATED

Seattle star Ichiro Suzuki was ejected for the first time in his career during a 5-4, 10-inning loss at Toronto. Suzuki was tossed for arguing a called third strike in the fifth inning. It was the first ejection this season for the Mariners and the first of Suzuki's career, including his years in Japan. Suzuki used his bat to draw a line on the outer edge of the plate, indicating that he thought strike three from David Purcey was outside. Plate umpire Brian Runge immediately ejected Suzuki, who argued briefly before being escorted off the field by manager Don Wakamatsu. Suzuki went 0 for 3, dropping his average to .353. He's second to Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer in the AL batting race.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Roger Clemens was back on a big league field before Houston hosted the Cincinnati Reds. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner looked like any proud father, setting up the video camera to record a big moment for his son. Koby Clemens received an award for being selected the Most Valuable Player of one of Houston's minor league teams. The elder Clemens had a small camera mounted on a mono-pod and spent much of his time taping the proceedings. Koby Clemens earned MVP honors for the Class-A Lancaster Jethawks. His .345 batting average and 121 RBIs topped all Astros minor leaguers this season.

COMING OFF THE BENCH

Sonia Sotomayor was right down the middle with her ceremonial pitch at Yankee Stadium. The newest Supreme Court Justice, a Yankees fan from the Bronx, threw out the first pitch before New York beat Boston 3-0. "She walked off, and I said, 'We'll be calling you next week with a contract,''' Yankees manager Joe Girardi recalled. "And she said she'd stick to her day job.'' Wearing a Yankees jersey, she was accompanied to the field by catcher Jorge Posada. Standing a bit in front of the mound, the right-hander took the stretch position, exhaled and threw on the fly to catcher Jose Molina.

GIANT COMPANY

The San Francisco Giants honored Jonathan Sanchez for his no-hitter against San Diego on July 10, hanging a plaque outside their ballpark next to similar tributes to departed home run king Barry Bonds, ex-closer Robb Nen and former ace Jason Schmidt. "Having this out there is amazing,'' Sanchez said before the ceremony. "Not everybody gets that. This is pretty special. I'm going to be there my whole life.'' Sanchez's gem was the first no-hitter by a Giants pitcher since John Montefusco accomplished the feat Sept. 29, 1976, at Atlanta.

A CRACK IN THE ARMOR

The AL West-leading Los Angeles Angels squandered a seven-run cushion and lost their fourth straight game with a 15-10 defeat against Oakland. The Angels were the only team in the majors that hadn't lost more than three in a row this season.

FOR THE BIRDS

Jhonny Peralta hit a game-ending single to give Cleveland a 9-8 win over Baltimore, extending the Orioles' losing streak to nine games. The Orioles, mired in their longest skid since dropping 10 straight Sept. 17-26, 2008, fell to 6-16 in September. Cleveland earned consecutive victories for the first time since Aug. 26-27. The Indians beat the Orioles 4-2 on Friday night to avoid tying the franchise record for consecutive losses at 12. Peralta got three hits after going 1 for 31 in his previous eight games.

FIGHT CLUB

Jorge Posada missed the New York Yankees' 3-0 win over Boston because of muscle spasms near his neck, an injury manager Joe Girardi said stemmed from knocks the catcher sustained during a brawl with Toronto on Sept. 15. Girardi said Posada's trapezius muscle had tightened up, preventing the switch hitter from swinging freely from the left side. ... New York also said A.J. Burnett will be pushed back one day in the starting rotation to Tuesday. That allows him to be with his father, who is scheduled for triple-bypass surgery Monday.

1923 - Lou Gehrig hit his first homer in the majors off Bill Piercy of the Boston Red Sox. On the same date 15 years later, he hit his 493rd and last off Dutch Leonard of the Senators.

1930 - Hack Wilson hit two home runs for the Chicago Cubs, giving him an NL-record 56 for the season.

1935 - The Chicago Cubs clinched the NL pennant and won their 21st consecutive game with a doubleheader sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs won the pennant with the opening-game victory.

1936 - Hall of Fame manager Walter Alston played in his only major league game as a late-inning substitute at first base for Johnny Mize of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made one error in two chances and struck out in his only at-bat.

1940 - Rookie Floyd Gieball pitched the Detroit Tigers to a pennant-clinching 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. It was Gieball's second and last major league win.

1973 - The California Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 11 innings as Nolan Ryan struck out 16, including No. 383 of the season, a modern major league record.

1993 - Randy Myers became the first NL reliever with 50 saves in a season as the Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles 7-3.

1996 - San Francisco's Barry Bonds became the second player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season. Jose Canseco was the other. Bonds, who had 42 homers, stole his 40th base in a 9-3 win over Colorado.

1998 - Mark McGwire gave baseball a new magic number, hitting two homers to reach No. 70 in the St. Louis Cardinals' season finale against Montreal. It was McGwire's fifth homer in the season-ending, three-game series. McGwire's 70th and final home run of the season was a line shot over the left-field wall on a first-pitch fastball from Carl Pavano in the seventh.

1998 - The New York Yankees won their seventh straight game and ended their incredible regular season with 114 victories. With a .704 winning percentage, the Yankees (114-48) became the first team since the 1954 Cleveland Indians (111-43) to play .700 ball over an entire season.

2000 - Anaheim's Darin Erstad was 4-for-5 with an RBI in a 9-7 loss to Oakland. Erstad with 99 RBIs, broke the major league record for RBIs in a season by a leadoff batter set by Boston's Nomar Garciaparra (98) in 1997.

2003 - Edgar Renteria became the first National League shortstop in 18 years to drive in 100 runs as St. Louis beat Arizona 3-2. Montreal's Hubie Brooks was the last NL shortstop to have at least 100, in 1985.

2003 - Sammy Sosa hit his 40th home run as Chicago beat Pittsburgh 7-2 in the second game of a doubleheader. Sosa set an NL record by reaching the mark for the sixth straight year.

2005 - The Atlanta Braves clinched their 14th straight division title thanks to Philadelphia's loss to the New York Mets. The Braves began their record-setting streak in 1991 - when they were in the NL West.

2006 - Florida is the first team in major league history to have four rookie pitchers with 10 wins after Anibal Sanchez (10-3) joined Scott Olsen (12-9), Josh Johnson (12-7) and Ricky Nolasco (11-10) following a 7-2 win over Cincinnati. Dontrelle Willis (12-12) gives the Marlins five 10-game winners for the first time in franchise history.

2008 - Mike Mussina of the New York Yankees became the oldest pitcher to win 20 games in a season for the first time, reaching the milestone on the final day of the season. The 39-year-old Mussina (20-9), finishing his 18th major league season, allowed three hits in six shutout innings. Previously, the oldest first-time 20-game winner was Jamie Moyer, who was 38 when he went 20-6 for Seattle in 2001.

On September 27 in Baseball History...

1914 - Cleveland second baseman Nap Lajoie collects his 3,000th Major League hit as the Indians defeat the Yankees 5-3.

1919 - Babe Ruth's 29th home run is his first of the year in Washington he is the first to hit one in every park in the league in one season.

1923 - Lou Gehrig hit his first homer in the majors, off Bill Piercy of the Boston Red Sox. On the same date 15 years later, he hit his 493rd and last off Dutch Leonard of the Senators.

1930 - Hack Wilson hit two home runs for the Chicago Cubs, giving him a National League record fifty-six for the season.

1931 - The most desperately contested battle for individual honors takes place in the race for the National League batting title. Chick Hafey, who reported late due to a contract dispute, goes into the final doubleheader with the Reds batting .353, ahead of last year's champ Bill Terry (.349). Hafey gets only one hit in eight times at bat to drop to .349. Against Brooklyn, Terry gets only one hit in four times at bat. The title goes to Hafey, who bats .3488 to Terry's .3486. Jim Bottomley, Hafey's Cardinal teammate, finishes at .3481.

1935 - The Chicago Cubs won their 21st consecutive game and clinched the National League pennant.

1936 - Walter Alston played in his only Major League game, as a late-inning substitute at first base for Johnny Mize of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made one error in two chances and struck out his only time at bat.

1939 - The hometown White Sox play the first day-night doubleheader against Cleveland, losing both games, 5-2, and 7-5. Fans are charged separate admissions for each game.

1940 - Rookie Floyd Giebell pitched the Detroit Tigers to a pennant-clinching 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. It was Giebell's second and last Major League win.

1953 - The St. Louis Browns play both their last game in Sportsman's Park and the last game in the franchise's 52-year history. Fittingly, they lose 2-1 to Billy Pierce and the Chicago White Sox in ten innings for their 100th defeat of the season.

1961 - Sandy Koufax notches seven strikeouts in a 2-1 win over the Phillies to set a National League record for strikeouts in a season: 269. This surpasses Christy Mathewson's 267 in 1903, which was accomplished in 367 innings pitched, as opposed to Koufax's 255.

1964 - Despite three home runs by Johnny Callison, the Phils are 14-8 losers to the Braves, who complete a four-game sweep at Connie Mack Stadium. With their seventh straight loss the Phils drop out of first.

1973 - The California Angels beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 in 11 innings, as Nolan Ryan struck out sixteen, including No. 383 of the season, a modern Major League record.

1983 - Tim Raines becomes the first player since Ty Cobb to steal 70 bases and drive in 70 runs in the same season.

1989 - The two San Francisco Bay teams clinch their divisions. Oakland wins the American League West by beating Texas 5-0, while San Francisco loses 1-0 to the Dodgers but is assured of the National League West crown when the second-place Padres lose to the Reds 2-1 in 13 innings.

1993 - Randy Myers became the first National League reliever with fifty saves in a season as the Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles 7-3.

1996 - San Francisco's Barry Bonds became only the second player to hit 40 homers and steal 40 bases in a season. Jose Canseco was the other. Bonds, who had 42 homers, stole his 40th base in a 9-3 win over Colorado.

1997 - The Giants become the first team in baseball history to finish last two years in a row and then win a title. A 6-1 win over the Padres clinches the National League West. Wilson Alvarez, who came over from the White Sox on July 31, faces only 23 men in seven innings, allowing two hits and three walks.

1998 - Mark McGwire hit two homers to reach No. 70 in the St. Louis Cardinals' season finale against Montreal. It gave McGwire five homers in the season-ending three-game series. McGwire's 70th and final home run of the season was a line shot over the left-field wall on a first-pitch fastball from Carl Pavano in the seventh.

1998 - The New York Yankees won their seventh straight game and ended the regular season with 114 victories. With a .704 winning percentage, the Yankees (114-48) became the first team since the 1954 Cleveland Indians (111-43) to play .700 ball over an entire season.
