    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: USC looks to beat up on Washington State, Miami meets Virginia Tech, and the Red Sox and Yankees continue their series.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The USC Trojans will try to bounce back from an ugly loss on Saturday night when they play host to Washington State. The No. 12 Trojans fell in the rankings last week after they were upset 16-13 by Washington. Trojans QB Aaron Corp threw for just 110 yards and was picked off once in that loss; he was filling in for Matt Barkley, who missed the game with a bruised shoulder. Barkley is listed as probable for Saturday's contest, and he'll have to be on his game for USC to cover the spread - they've been listed as big 45.5-point favorites vs. the Cougars.

The only ranked matchup on Saturday has No. 9 Miami at No. 11 Virginia Tech, with the Hurricanes pegged as 3-point road favorites. Miami is coming off a 33-17 win over Georgia Tech last time out, with Jacory Harris throwing for 270 yards and three scores to move the team to 2-0. The Hokies edged Nebraska 16-15 last week to improve to 2-1; Tyrod Taylor threw a late TD pass to secure the win.

Top-ranked Florida (-22) plays at Kentucky on Saturday, while No. 2 Texas (-36) hosts UTEP. As well, it'll be Arkansas at No. 3 Alabama (-17.5), Iowa at No. 5 Penn State (-9.5), No. 6 California (-5.5) at Oregon, No. 7 LSU (-12.5) at Mississippi State, and No. 8 Boise State (-16.5) at Bowling Green. No. 4 Mississippi played on Thursday night, and No. 10 Oklahoma is off this weekend.

As well, there are a couple of Canadian Football League games on the Saturday schedule, with Saskatchewan at Edmonton and Toronto at Winnipeg. The Eskimos are pegged as 3.5-point home favorites against the Riders in that first contest, while the Blue Bombers are slim 1-point home faves against the Argos.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Daisuke Matsuzaka (3-5, 6.80 ERA) vs. CC Sabathia (18-7, 3.31 ERA) on Saturday afternoon as the Red Sox continue their series in New York. Righthander Matsuzaka has won back-to-back outings for Boston since returning from the disabled list, holding the O's and Angels to three runs over 11 1-3 innings of work. Lefthander Sabathia held the M's to one unearned run over seven innings last time out, and New York is now 10-0 in his last 10 mound trips.

The top pitcher on the mound in the National League on Saturday will be the Cardinals' Adam Wainwright (18-8, 2.59 ERA), who'll take on the Rockies' Ubaldo Jimenez (14-11, 3.47 ERA) in Colorado. Righthander Wainwright has failed in his last two attempts to pick up his 19th win of the season, despite allowing just five runs over 14 innings vs. the Cubs and Marlins. Righthander Jimenez held the Diamondbacks to one run over seven innings in his last outing.

Also on the NL schedule for Saturday: Atlanta at Washington, the Cubs at San Francisco, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, Cincinnati at Houston, the Dodgers at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Florida, and San Diego at Arizona. Rounding out the AL slate: Seattle at Toronto, Baltimore at Cleveland, Detroit at the White Sox, Minnesota at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at Texas, and also Oakland at the Angels.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, September 26

      No Joshin’

Baseball bettors need to look no further than the Texas Rangers-Tampa Bay Rays game to find value Saturday. Texas (-106) starts ace Kevin Millwood and even better, welcomes stud Josh Hamilton back into the lineup. Hamilton, last year’s AL RBI king, had missed 19 straight games with a pinched nerve before hitting third on Friday night. The former Tampa Bay prospect entered the weekend hitting .270 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 87 games and should give some pop to a lineup missing slugger Michael Young for nearly three weeks.

      Tiger season

Does Tiger Woods have a chink in his armor? Woods appeared poised to pull away from the field on Friday, but missed two short putts and then bogeyed 18 to take just a one-shot lead into the weekend at the Tour Championship. However, none of the other players in the top 10 of the event are even one of the top 5 seeds of the FedEx Cup. Woods was furious over missing with his putter on Friday, and a focused Tiger with a lead at a big name tournament is a phenomenal value at -250 to bring home the title.

      Perk your interest

The real football starts much earlier on Saturday morning, as the United States faces Germany in the opening game of the group stage of the U-20 World Cup in Germany. The United States is a fantastic value at +275. The Yanks have scored in seven straight U-20 WC games dating back to a 0-0 tie with Germany in 2005. But one could be all the Americans need. Young stud goalie Brian Perk posted a win in the Round of 16 over Uruguay in the event two years ago, and has just a 0.14 GAA as he has shutout four straight opponents.

      Rushing to conclusions

The Iowa Hawkeyes are allowing more than 140 rushing yards per game, a trend the heavily-favored Nittany Lions (-9.5) will try to exploit. But just wait. Iowa is strong in the red zone, allowing just five red zone rushing TDs last year, the second-fewest in the country. This year, teams are scoring touchdowns on just 33 percent of their trips inside the red zone against the Hawkeyes. Conversely, Penn State is ranked 101st in the nation in red zone offense, scoring on fewer than 70 percent of their trips. If Iowa can stop the big play, they will cover the spread.

      Line it up

The Miami Hurricanes head to Blacksburg, Va., with plenty of swagger to face the Hokies. What the Hurricanes won’t have, however, is starting defensive lineman Marcus Forston and Andrew Smith, who each have been ruled out with injuries. The players were integral in stopping the run in two straight wins over ranked teams, and will be missed against Virginia Tech (+3, 47), which is coming off a last-second win against Nebraska and figures to rely heavily on its ground game to pull the upset.

      No LT, Part II

Fantasy owners and Chargers backers need to sit down to hear this news. Stud running back LaDainian Tomlinson will miss a second straight game with an ankle injury. The All-Pro running back will sit out the team’s home game against the Dolphins, as will dinged-up center Nick Hartwick. Backup Darren Sproles is capable in stretches, but his durability has yet to be proven. San Diego still is listed as a six-point favorite.

        SCOREBOARD

        Saturday, September 26

Philadelphia at Milwaukee (7:05 p.m. EDT). The Phillies try to move closer to the NL East title when they face Braden Looper (13-7, 5.12 ERA) and the Brewers. Kyle Kendrick (2-1, 2.70) is expected to get the ball for Philadelphia after Pedro Martinez was scratched with lingering neck soreness.

        STARS

        Friday

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, homered, drove in four runs and tied a career high with three steals in a 9-5 victory over the Red Sox.

-Roy Halladay, Blue Jays, struck out nine in a seven-hitter, leading Toronto to a 5-0 win against the Mariners.

-Jake Peavy, White Sox, struck out eight in seven sharp innings to help Chicago to a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

-Prince Fielder and Mike Cameron, Brewers, each hit a three-run homer in an 8-4 win over the Phillies.

-Carlos Zambrano, Cubs, threw a two-hitter and drove in two runs in a 3-0 win at the Giants.

-Joey Votto, Reds, homered and drove in four runs as Cincinnati beat the Astros 10-4 for its fifth consecutive victory.

-Michael Cuddyer, Twins, hit his 30th homer and drove in two runs in a 9-4 victory at Kansas City.

-Javier Vazquez, Braves, pitched a three-hitter for his third complete game of the season, leading Atlanta to a 4-1 victory at Washington.

-Jeff Francoeur, Mets, hit a three-run homer and New York beat the Marlins 6-5 in Miami.

-Kevin Correia, Padres, tossed a six-hitter for his first career complete game, leading San Diego to a 4-0 win at Arizona.

-Gio Gonzalez, Athletics, allowed four hits in 6 1-3 innings during a 3-0 win against the Angels.

        DOWN TO THE WIRE

Michael Cuddyer hit his 30th homer and Minnesota beat Kansas City 9-4 to move within two games of first-place Detroit in the AL Central. The Tigers lost 2-0 at the White Sox. Detroit and Minnesota meet in a four-game series beginning Monday at Comerica Park.

        NOT SO FAST

Yorvit Torrealba hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and Colorado edged St. Louis 2-1 on Friday night to prevent the Cardinals from becoming the first team in the majors to clinch their division. The Rockies stayed 3 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta in the wild-card race and ruined former Colorado slugger Matt Holliday's homecoming. St. Louis also could have secured the Central title with a Cubs loss, but Chicago won 3-0 at San Francisco.

        SHAKY PHILLIES

Cliff Lee struggled again in Philadelphia's 8-4 loss to the Brewers, adding to the Phillies' woes. The defending World Series champions are auditioning potential replacements for struggling closer Brad Lidge and juggling their rotation with Pedro Martinez still bothered by a stiff neck. Lee allowed seven runs and nine hits in six innings to drop to 2-3 with a 6.35 ERA in his last six starts.

        SHUTOUTS APLENTY

Roy Halladay, Carlos Zambrano and Kevin Correia each threw a shutout Friday night. Halladay struck out nine in a seven-hitter, leading Toronto to a 5-0 victory against Seattle and tying Kansas City's Zack Greinke for the major-league lead with his third shutout this year. Zambrano tossed a two-hitter in Chicago's 3-0 victory at San Francisco, and Correia had a six-hitter in San Diego's 4-0 win at Arizona. Also, the White Sox blanked the Tigers 2-0 and Oakland beat the Angels 3-0 with combined efforts.

        SOMETHING HAD TO GIVE

Fausto Carmona pitched six strong innings and Cleveland ended its 11-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. The Indians improved to 4-19 in September and avoided tying the franchise record of 12 straight losses set in 1931. The Orioles have lost eight consecutive games in their longest skid since a 10-game slide Sept. 17-26, 2008.

        WORTH NOTING

The Dodgers' magic number for repeating as the NL West champion remained at four after a 3-1 loss at the Pirates. ... Alex Rodriguez's two-run homer in the third inning of a 9-5 victory against Boston was New York's team-record 127th at new Yankee Stadium. New York hit 126 homers at old Yankee Stadium in both 2004 and '05, according to STATS LLC. ... Ian Kinsler became the third second baseman in major league history with 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season when he connected in the eighth inning of Texas' 8-3 win against Tampa Bay.

        SPEAKING

"I'm fine. Any time you take a ball off any part of your body, you're worried, but the tests came back fine.'' - Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester after he had to leave a 9-5 loss to the Yankees when he was struck near his right knee by Melky Cabrera's liner in the third inning. X-rays were negative, and Boston said Lester had a bruised quadriceps.

        SEASONS

2007 - Michael Young reached 200 hits for the fifth consecutive season with a pair of RBI singles among his three hits and Texas pounded the Los Angeles Angels 16-2. Young joined Wade Boggs and Ichiro Suzuki as the only players since 1940 with five consecutive 200-hit seasons.

2007 - Brandon Phillips hit his 30th homer of the season in Cincinnati's 7-6 loss to Houston to join Alfonso Soriano as the only second basemen in major league history to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in a season.

2008 - The Tampa Bay Rays won their first AL East championship when the Boston Red Sox lost to the New York Yankees. They became the first team other than Boston and New York to win the division since Baltimore did it in 1997. The Rays also became the first AL team in the divisional era to finish with the worst record in its league then win its division in the following year.

2008 - Seattle outfielder Ichiro Suzuki matched Lou Gehrig's record with his eighth season of at least 200 hits and 100 runs. Suzuki scored his 100th run of the season in the third inning against Oakland. Gehrig reached the marks in 1927-28, 1930-32, 1934 and 1936-37.

          This Day in Baseball

On September 26 in Baseball History...

1908 - Ed Reulbach of the Chicago Cubs became the only pitcher to throw two shutouts in a doubleheader, beating the Superbas 5-0 and 3-0.

1916 - Washington manager Clark Griffith excuses several regulars for the remaining games of the season so he can use some new players. Included is Walter Johnson, who has already won 25 games for the seventh-place club. In a league-leading 371 innings, he did not give up a home run, an all-time record.

1921 - Babe Ruth hits home runs 57 and 58 to beat the Indians 8-7, and the Yankees take a two-and-a-half-game lead. The four-game series draws 147,000 people.

1932 - Chuck Klein closes the season with 38 home runs and 20 stolen bases and becomes the only player of the lively-ball era (1920 and after) to lead his league in these two departments.

1953 - Billy Hunter becomes the last St. Louis Browns player to homer in a game. The Browns lose anyway 6-3 to Chicago.

1954 - Art Ditmar of the Athletics defeats the Yanks 8-6 in the last game the franchise will play in Philadelphia before moving to Kansas City. Yankees catcher Yogi Berra plays his only game at third base in his career and Mickey Mantle plays shortstop.

1955 - Ted Williams finishes the season at .356, well ahead of Al Kaline's .340, but does not have enough at-bats to win the batting title. The same thing happened in 1954. Williams was walked 136 times in 1954 and 71 times (an American League leading 17 were intentional) this year. A rule change will be made to recognize plate appearances, not times at bat.

1959 - At Milwaukee the Braves beat the Phillies 3-2 behind Spahn's 21st win. He is now ahead of Eppa Rixey as the winningest National League lefty.

1961 - Roger Maris of the Yankees tied Babe Ruth 34-year-old record with his 60th homer, off Baltimore's Jack Fisher.

1965 - Minnesota gains its first American League pennant by defeating Washington, 2-1. Jim Kaat (17-11) wins the clincher.

1971 - Jim Palmer becomes the fourth member of the Orioles 1971 pitching staff to notch his 20th victory. Only one other team in Major League history - the 1920 White Sox - boasted four 20-game winners.

1978 - New York District Court Judge Constance Baker Motley rules that women sportswriters cannot be banned from locker rooms in the state.

1979 - Atlanta's Phil Niekro notches his 20th win of the season by beating his brother Joe, the National League's only other 20-game winner of the season, 9-4. The Niekro brothers are the second pair (the other was Jim and Gaylord Perry) to win 20 games in the same year. Phil Niekro, who finishes at 21-20, is the first pitcher since fellow knuckleballer Wilbur Wood in 1973 to win and lose 20 games the same year, and the first National League pitcher to do so since 1905.

1981 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros became the first to pitch five no-hitters, hurling a 5-0 victory over Los Angeles at the Astrodome.

1983 - Bob Forsch of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched the second no-hitter of his career, defeating Montreal 3-0.

1987 - Padres catcher Benito Santiago extends his hitting streak to 28 games in a 3-1 loss to the Dodgers, setting a new Major League record for rookies. Pittsburgh's Jimmy Williams had held the record with a 27-game streak in 1899.

1993 - Randy Johnson of the Seattle Mariners became the eighth pitcher to strike out 300 batters in a season with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings of a 3-2, 12-inning loss to Oakland.

1998 - Curt Schilling became the fifth to strike out 300 batters in consecutive seasons when he fanned Kevin Orie in the seventh inning of Philadelphia's 4-3 loss to Florida in the first game of a doubleheader.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Houston Astros (-140, 9)

If you are unsure of the definition of “packed it in,” let us introduce you to the Houston Astros.

Fired manager? Check. Way out of posteason race? Check. Huge losing slide? Check.

Houston has dropped nine of its past 10 games and has stopped caring, especially at the plate. The team is averaging a horrendous 2.3 runs per game in its past 10 and has scored more than five runs just three times since August 19.

In the other dugout, the Reds are playing for next year, winning eight of their past 10 and getting great pitching along the way. Over the past 10 games, the team has allowed an average of just 2.7 runs per game. On the season, the Reds have the eigth-lowest ERA in the majors are 4.21.

The Astros are ground and the Reds should continue to streak.

              Pick: Reds

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (+175, 8.5)

The Braves couldn’t be happier about Saturday’s game against the Nationals.

First, Atlanta, winners of eight of its past 10, have owned Washington this season. The Braves have taken seven of 11 overall against the Nats this year, including their two most recent meetings. Secondly, Atlanta is the definition of a weekend warrior, posting a sparkling, 7-1 record in its past eight Saturday games.

The Nationals, however, don’t have as much to cheer about.

Washington has dropped 12 of its past 16 games and seven of its past 10 overall. And it’s offense has been even worse than normal. During its recent slide, the team is averaging just 3.3 runs per game, more than a full run below its season average of 4.4, still one of the worst in the majors.

It’s a Brave new world and the Nationals aren’t prepared for it.

              Pick: Braves

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                C.C. Sabathia (New York Yankees)

The biggest free agent acquisition of the offseason is pitching like a Cy Young candidate for the Yankees.

Sabathia (18-7, 3.31 ERA) has won his past eight decisions and has thrown nine straight quality starts. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since August 2, and has yielded just 13 earned runs over his past 65 1-3 innings. In his most recent start, a 10-1 win over Seattle, he allowed only one unearned run on four hits over seven innings.

                Randy Wolf (Los Angeles Dodgers)

The Wolf Pack is making a return in Tinsletown.

Wolf (11-6, 3.24 ERA) has emerged as the most reliable member of the Dodgers rotation. The former Philly has won his past six decisions and has thrown eight straight quality starts. Over the past 56 innings he has allowed just 15 earned runs. The last time he took the mound, a 6-2 win over the Giants, he allowed just two solo home runs over six innings.

                Slumping

                Jason Berken (Baltimore Orioles)

The rookie was supposed to be an inning-eater for the Baltimore rotation, but he hasn’t even been able to do that this season.

Berken (5-12, 6.41 ERA) has been totally shelled in his past two outings, allowing 11 earned runs on 17 hits over his past 9 1-3 innings. In his most recent outing, a 9-3 loss to Boston, he gave up six earned runs on 10 hits in just three innings.

                Lenny DiNardo (Kansas City Royals)

DiNardo should have stayed in the minors.

The 30 year old has been disasterous in three starts since being promoted. DiNardo (0-1, 8.22 ERA) has given up 14 earned runs over just 15 1-3 innings. But it could have been worse. Over that span, he also has given up 26 hits and walked 10.

If he wants to pick up a win this season, he must find a way to keep opponents from hitting .382 against him.

                            Saturday, September 26

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Edmonton Eskimos (-3.5, 58.5)

Ricky Ray is on a mission. He has thrown for 774 yards with five touchdowns in his last three games. At some point he completed 22 passes in a row. Arkee Whitlock was also impressive. So was Fred Stamps. Each one of them scored touchdowns. But Darian Durant passed for nearly 550 yards without an interception last week. The Riders where also solid on special teams. The Eskimos new offensive coordinator Kevin Strasser seems to have found the solutions to improve an otherwise anaemic offence. That doesn’t seem to impress Riders QB Darian Durant who recently said, “We know what they’re going to do.” Is Edmonton that predictable? I guess we shall see. The Eskimos already won the first two games in the series. But will that be enough?

                            Pick: Eskimos -3.5

Toronto Argonauts at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (-1, 44)

The Blue Bombers are going nowhere. The recent trades they made suggest they are already thinking of next year or maybe the next decade. Cody Pickett, the Argos QB, has a once-in-lifetime opportunity to prove he belongs as a starter in the CFL. He his facing a team in total disarray and can’t be allowed to fail in such a situation. The Blue Bombers are not without talent but there are still a lot of question marks about their coaching. Mike Kelly is definitely not the most popular guy in Winnipeg and, honestly, fans are still surprised that he hasn’t lost his job yet. Of course, they are also very well aware that the Blue Bombers can’t really afford to pay two salaries to former coaches. We can tell you from the start, that whichever coach comes on the losing end of this game will probably lose their job sooner than later.

                            Pick: Argonauts +1

                            Last Week 2-2, season 25-19
