    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, September 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: No. 4 Mississippi takes on South Carolina, the Giants host the Cubs, and the PGA Tour begins its final playoff tournament.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on the Thursday slate, with South Carolina hosting No. 4 Mississippi. The ranked Rebels beat up on Southeastern Louisiana last week, getting three touchdown passes from Jevan Snead in a 52-6 victory. The Gamecocks are also coming off a win, as they put up three TDs in the third quarter to blow past Florida Atlantic 38-16. Oddsmakers like Mississippi in Thursday's matchup, listing them as 3.5-point favorites with a total of 53 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Giants will send Brad Penny (3-1, 4.01 ERA in the National League) to the mound on Thursday night as they begin a four-game home series against the Cubs. Righthander Penny will be looking to bounce back from an ugly outing against the Dodgers in which he gave up seven runs over just 2 2-3 innings of work. Countering for the Cubs will be Ryan Dempster (10-8, 3.72 ERA). Righthander Dempster held the Cards to one run over eight innings last time out.

Also on the NL schedule for Thursday: Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, and the Dodgers at Washington. Los Angeles will go with Vicente Padilla (3-0, 2.96 ERA in the NL) in that last matchup; righthander Padilla took a no-decision against the Dodgers last time out, allowing four runs over five innings. J.D. Martin (5-4, 4.21 ERA) gets the nod for the Nats; the righthander has picked up the win in each of his last two outings.

Meanwhile, there are just four games on the American League schedule for Thursday, with Texas at Oakland, Seattle at Toronto, Boston at Kansas City, and Detroit at Cleveland. Ace Justin Verlander (16-9, 3.44 ERA) is slated to start for the Tigers; the righthander has surrendered 10 earned runs on 19 hits over his last 14 1-3 innings. The Tribe send Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 9.64 ERA) to the hill; righthander Carrasco has given up 15 earned runs over 14 innings this season.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the last event of the PGA Tour's FedExCup begins on Thursday, with the top 30 players in the standings competing in The TOUR Championship at East Lake GC in Atlanta. Points leader Tiger Woods is the favorite to win both the tournament and the FedExCup this weekend. Four other players can also claim the FedExCup by winning at East Lake this week - Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, and Heath Slocum. The other golfers will need Woods to stumble.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Thursday, September 24

      Danger: Explosive offense!

Ole Miss’ attack is setting fire to all opposing defenses. Coach Houston Nutt’s boys are averaging 46.5 points over their last six contests. Only three of those games went over the total, but the Rebels still hung 45 and 52 points in matchups that fell below the over/under line.

South Carolina and Ole Miss have played over the total in each of their last three meetings, but Thursday’s total (53) is a bit higher than what SEC bettors are accustomed to seeing.

      Those damn Yanks

Wednesday’s 3-2 win over the Angels is further proof that the Bronx Bombers won’t mail in the rest of the season even though they’ve secured a spot in the postseason.

New York went 2-1 after clinching in 2007 and 5-5 in 2006. So even though utility players like Shelley Duncan and Jose Molina will see lots of time, that doesn’t mean the Yanks are a good play-against team for the remainder of the regular season.

Thursday is an off day for New York before the club plays host to the Red Sox beginning on Friday.

Tom Brady’s security blanket expects to play

Wes Welker expects to play this weekend against Atlanta even though he didn’t practice on Wednesday according to an ESPN report.

Welker missed last week’s game, a 16-9 loss to the Jets. The Pats are 4-point home faves this weekend against Atlanta.

Welker had 12 catches for 93 yards in the team’s Week 1 win over Buffalo. The former Dolphin caught 224 balls and found the end zone 11 times from 2007-08.

      Smelly South Siders

White Sox general manager Ken Williams reiterated on Wednesday afternoon how much he detests this year’s rag-tag group.

“They are underachievers,” he told the Associated Press. “We’re not playing up to our capabilities. Period.”

Entering Wednesday’s tilt with the Twins, Chicago had dropped six of seven games. The most embarrassing part: the Sox were favored in six of those games.

The Chi Sox begin a weekend series with the Tigers on Friday.

Thursday's List of 13: Our college football List of 13:

As always, our college football list isn't a ranking, just teams that caught my attention last week, for better or worse........

        13) Washington-- You think they worked the recruiting phones this week? Interesting to see how they do at Stanford this week.

        12) Georgia-- Allowed 78 points in SEC games last two weeks, and won both of them. Arizona State visits this week- who did this schedule?

        11) Cincinnati-- Convincing wins already at Rutgers, Oregon State, with one returning defensive starter from LY's team. Impressive team.

        10) Kansas-- Football players got into couple fights this week with guys on Jayhawks' basketball team, an unwanted distraction for everyone.

        9) Michigan State-- Cousins' first road start turned into disaster on last drive, when he threw horrible INT when they were in range for a certain tying field goal, at least. Next learning experience is against Wisconsin.

        8) Miami-- Florida State's huge win at BYU adds momentum to Harris' Heisman bandwagon. Hurricanes are top 5 team if they beat Va Tech in Blacksburg Saturday.

        7) Mountain West-- Utah, BYU both got socked last week, a bad week for the BCS busters; they need TCU to win at Clemson this week.

        6) LSU-- Excellent article on espn.com this week about TC McCartney, backup QB for LSU who is son of former Colorado QB Sal Aunese.

        5) Northern Illinoiw-- They had ball on own 20-yard line with 3:00 left at Purdue, up 28-21, and they ran a fake punt. It worked-- onions!!!!

        4) Boise State-- Memo to Coach Peterson-- Never leave Boise. Look at the other guys who have won here and moved on-- it hasn't gone well.

        3) Louisville-- Rumor mill has Philip Fulmer taking over Cardinals if this season turns ugly. This fanbase was spoiled by Petrino's success.

        2) South Florida-- Senior QB Grothe tore his ACL in game Bulls won by 59-0 score; sad end to a terrific college career. USF has Florida State next not the easiest first start for Grothe's replacement.

        1) Texas Tech-- Punter Erxleben is son of Russell Erxleben, great kicker and punter for Longhorn teams in late 70's who went on to punt for the Saints for a few years. Was impressed by Tech defense in Austin.

            SCOREBOARD

            Thursday, September 24

Seattle at Toronto (7:07 p.m. EDT). Felix Hernandez (16-5) will try for his 17th win of the season as the Mariners open a series against the Blue Jays.

            STARS

            Wednesday

-A.J. Burnett, Yankees, struck out 11 in his second win since July, and New York won a series at Anaheim for the first time since May 2004 with a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles.

-David Ortiz, Red Sox, homered and drove in four runs to help Boston beat Kansas City 9-2.

-Will Venable, Padres, homered and tied a career high by driving in four runs in San Diego's 6-3 win that snapped Colorado's eight-game home winning streak.

-Juan Uribe, Giants, hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs and San Francisco gained a game in the NL wild-card race with a 5-2 victory over Arizona.

-Joey Votto, Reds, went 4 for 5 and scored three runs in Cincinnati's 12-2 rout of Pittsburgh.

-B.J. Upton, Rays, had three RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth, for Tampa Bay in a 5-4 win over Seattle.

            HANGING 'EM UP

Bobby Cox will retire as manager of the Atlanta Braves after next season, ending an illustrious career in which he guided the team to 14 consecutive postseason appearances and the 1995 World Series title. The 68-year-old Cox, a four-time Manager of the Year, agreed to a one-year contract extension for 2010, the Braves announced before Wednesday night's game against the New York Mets. He will start a five-year consulting agreement to advise the team in baseball operations after he steps down as manager.

            SORRY, GUYS

Suspended Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley apologized Wednesday for behavior that led to general manager Jim Hendry's decision to banish him for the rest of the season. Bradley, signed to a three-year, $30 million deal in the offseason, struggled and was booed loudly at Wrigley Field while hitting .257 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs. Bradley said his frustration and disappointment caused him to act in a way he regrets. With a 3-2 loss to Milwaukee, the Cubs dropped to 78-73 - 7 1/2 games out of the NL wild card race - after winning 97 games last season.

            SIDELINED

San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. Manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday the Giants hope to delay the operation as long as the team is in the NL playoff race. Sanchez was injured when he landed awkwardly while fielding a return throw from the outfield in the first inning of a 5-4 victory over Arizona on Monday.

            STATS

Philadelphia's Raul Ibanez has hit six HRs in his last 17 games after hitting one homer in the previous 34. ... Houston's Miguel Tejada got his 180th hit for the season, a record for an Astros shortstop. ... Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins' third-inning double tied Bobby Abreu for fifth place (585) on the team's all-time extra-base hits list. ... Florida pinch-hitter Gaby Sanchez's home run was Florida's eighth by a pinch-hitter this season to tie the team record set in 1999. ... Derrek Lee, who is hitting .387 in September, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts against the Brewers after going 6 of 8 with two homers and six RBIs in his two previous games.

            SPEAKING

"It's incredibly frustrating. I'm disappointed. They hit the ball tonight. I'm a little bit at a loss. I'm sure there's some things I can do better.'' - Philadelphia Phillies closer Brad Lidge after blowing yet another save in a 7-6 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday.

            SEASONS

            Sept. 24

1940 - Jimmie Foxx of the Red Sox hit his 500th career home run off Philadelphia's George Caster in the first game of a doubleheader at Shibe Park. Foxx's homer came in the sixth inning after Ted Williams homered. Joe Cronin followed with a homer and, later in the inning, Jim Tabor also homered. The four homers in the inning were a first in the AL.

1969 - The New York Mets clinched the NL East Division title, with Gary Gentry pitching a four-hitter in a 6-0 victory over St. Louis.

1974 - Detroit's Al Kaline doubled down the right-field line off Dave McNally of Baltimore for his 3,000th career hit. The Orioles beat the Tigers 5-4 at Memorial Stadium.

1984 - Rick Sutcliffe threw a two-hitter and led the Chicago Cubs to their first league title since 1945 with a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh.

1988 - Dave Stieb of the Toronto Blue Jays, one strike away from a no-hitter, gave up a bad-hop single to Julio Franco. Stieb settled for a 1-0 one-hit victory over Cleveland.

1992 - Dave Winfield of the Toronto Blue Jays, at 40, became the oldest player to drive in 100 runs. Winfield drove in four runs with a homer and a two-run double in an 8-2 win over Baltimore.

1993 - The Colorado Rockies set a NL record for victories by an expansion team with their 65th win of the season. Colorado beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-2, surpassing the 64 wins the Houston Colt .45s had in 1962.

1998 - Boston's Tom Gordon set a major league record for most consecutive saves with his 42nd to preserve the Red Sox' 9-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles.

2004 - The Atlanta Braves clinched their 13th consecutive division title, winning the NL East with an 8-7 victory over the Florida Marlins. The Braves' record streak of division championships began with the 1991 NL West title and excludes the 1994 strike-shortened season.

2006 - Trevor Hoffman became baseball's career saves leader, earning No. 479 to pass Lee Smith and help NL West-leading San Diego beat Pittsburgh 2-1. It was his NL-leading 43rd save in 48 chances. Smith piled up 478 saves from 1980-1997.

2006 - David Ortiz hit his 53rd homer and 32nd on the road in Boston's 13-4 loss to Toronto. The blast tied Babe Ruth for most home runs on the road in AL history.

2008 - Francisco Rodriguez worked the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Angels' 6-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners to end the season with a major league record 62 saves.

Today's birthdays: Travis Ishikawa 26; Jeff Karstens 27; John McDonald 35; Kevin Millar 38

              This Day in Baseball

On September 24 in Baseball History...

1916 - Marty Kavanagh, Indians utility man, hits the American League's first pinch-hit grand slam for Cleveland in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox. The ball rolls through a hole in the fence and cannot be retrieved in time for a play at the plate.

1929 - Tom Zachary of the Yankees wins his 12th without a loss 5-3 over Boston. He is the first pitcher to go 12-0 for a season.

1934 - Idle Detroit wins the pennant, as the Red Sox beat the Yankees 5-0 in the season finale at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth walks in the first inning, limps to first base, and leaves for a pinch runner in his last home game as a Yankee.

1946 - Disappointing on the field, the Yankees nevertheless finish their home season with an attendance of 2,265,512. The best previous draw was the 1929 Cubs at 1,485,166. Total Major League attendance was 18.5 million, 75 percent more than 1945.

1948 - The Yankees whip the Red Sox 9-6 while Cleveland loses at Detroit, 4-3. New York, Boston and Cleveland are now tied for first place in the American League with identical 91-56 records.

1957 - In the last game at Ebbets Field, 6,702 fans watch Dodgers lefty Danny McDevitt prevail over the Pirates 2-0. Gil Hodges has the last RBI.

1969 - Home runs by Donn Clendenon and Ed Charles, and Gary Gentry's four-hitter, clinch the National League East for the Mets, who defeat Steve Carlton and the Cards 6-0. As the game ends, a large number of the 54,928 fans pour onto the field ripping up huge chunks of sod. Seven fans suffer fractures in the celebration.

1974 - Al Kaline doubles off Dave McNally for his 3,000th career hit, as the Tigers beat the Orioles, 5-4.

1979 - Pete Rose singles as the Phillies fall to the Cardinals, 7-2. Rose reaches 200 hits in a season for the tenth time. He breaks the Major League record of nine such seasons held by Ty Cobb.

1980 - The Braves, with 24,897 watching, beat the Astros 4-2 at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, pushing the Braves over the one million attendance mark for the season. The eleven other National League teams have already reached that milestone, making this the first season ever in which all the teams in one league have done so.

1984 - Rick Sutcliffe pitches a two-hitter in a 4-1 win over Pittsburgh to clinch the National League East title for the Cubs, who will be making their first postseason appearance since 1945. The win is Sutcliffe's 14th in a row.

1985 - Expos outfielder Andre Dawson slugs three home runs, including a pair of three-run shots in a 12-run fifth inning, to lead Montreal to a wild 17-15 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Dawson joins Willie McCovey as the only players to hit two home runs in one inning on two different occasions.

1992 - Toronto's Dave Winfield becomes the oldest player in Major League history to reach the 100-RBI plateau. The 40-year-old does the trick in his 2,700th career game.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays (+138, 7.5)

While most baseball fans are fixated on the postseason races, the Seattle Mariners have quietly become one of baseball’s hottest teams.

Heading into Wednesday, the Mariners have won seven of their last 10 games and have suffered just one loss in their past six contests. During that span, Seattle pitching staff is shutting down opponent’s weapons, posting a 2.75 ERA.

Seattle had to travel all the way to Florida for two games against the Tampa Bay Rays and will now head north to face the Jays at the Rogers Centre. The Mariners scored a 4-3 win over Tampa Tuesday but manager Don Wakamatsu said his team was a little jet lagged after the cross-country trip.

"I really think the flight made some of the guys sore," Wakamatsu told the Seattle Times. "I mean that (flight) can be a tough thing to (overcome)."

The M’s have faced Toronto three times at home this season, with two of those games playing under the total. In that series, Seattle hit .305 but had just five extra-base hits and totaled just 11 runs. The under is 9-3 in their last 12 meetings.

                      Pick: Under

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (-110, 8)

Oakland is trying its hardest to avoid a sub-.500 record this season.

The A’s have caught fire in the final month of the season, winning eight of their last 10 games (heading into Wednesday) to improve to 13-6 in September. Oakland claimed win No. 13 with a 9-1 beating of the Texas Rangers Tuesday night at McAfee Coliseum – giving the team its first winning month of 2009.

This current eight-game home stand is producing some big offensive numbers for the Athletics. The team is batting over .300 and averaging more than six runs per game during this span. The pitching has also been stellar, posting a 2.43 ERA over the last seven games.

"They are a pretty good young team and they finally put it together," Texas manager Ron Washington, a former A’s third base coach, told the media. "Their pitching staff is young and those kids have gotten their feet wet and they are showing their ability that they have."

As of Wednesday, Oakland has built a 10-7 record against the Rangers, taking seven of those win in the last 10 meetings.

                      Pick: Oakland

                        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

                        Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Over the past three months, Bronson Arroyo has proved to be two things: One, still an incredible pitcher. And two, a very patient man.

The Reds righty has gone just 4-5 since the All-Star break despite posting a 2.42 ERA and 11 straight quality starts. The big issue is run support, which came up again in Arroyo’s most recent trip to the bump. He went eight innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out six batters, but was let down by Cincinnati’s lineup which mustered just two runs on five hits.

Arroyo’s was gracious enough to take some of the blame after allowing two home runs but when you’re getting just 4.69 runs of support during your time on the hill, you’ve earned the right to throw your teammates under the bus.

                        Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners

The Mariners are on a tear in September and pitching is the name of the game in the Emerald City. King Felix is leading that charge, going 5-1 in his 10 starts since August.

Hernandez has his name in Cy Young talks. He has a 1.77 ERA in the past three months and is coming off a complete-game gem against the Yankees in which he gave up one earned run on eight hits and used just 104 pitches to do so.

                        Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox

Boston’s young righty is playing himself into a spot in the postseason rotation – if the Red Sox win the AL Wild Card. With a seven-game death grip on the final postseason spot, Buchholz should start booking tickets in Los Angeles for family members.

He’s 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA in his last five starts, and is holding opponents to a .248 BA this season. His most recent performance was a six-inning, one-run show against the Orioles. He’s allowed just two runs in his last three appearances.

                        Slumping

                        Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

You picked a fine time to suck Justin.

With the Minnesota Twins hot on the heels of the AL Central leaders, the Tigers ace has hit the skids at the most inconvenient time. In his last two starts, Verlander has allowed 10 earned runs on 15 hits.

In his last three starts, the once-mighty righty is 0-2 with a 4.87 ERA. He’s also allowed three home runs in this span.

                        Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians

With a name like Carlos Carrasco, you can either be a major league pitcher or a character in a Grand Theft Auto video game.

After a rough start to his big league career, Carrasco might start pining for a latter.

In his first three appearances, the former Phillies prospect is 0-2 with an ERA just south of 10.00. His most recent start was a gem compared to his first two trips to the mound. Carrasco lasted six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He also allowed a home run, bringing his MLB total to six in just 14 innings.

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers (-$2.10, O/U 9 under -$1.20): Justin Verlander is a heavy favorite, which is understandable considering Cleveland’s losing streak and his own 16-9 record and 3.44 ERA. Verlander leads the American League in strikeouts. But Verlander also threw a season-high 128 pitches in his last start on Saturday in a game the Tigers lost to the Twins. There is no extra day rest for Verlander despite the high pitch count. The Tigers are 40-18 in Verlander’s last 58 starts versus a team with a losing record. The over has cashed in 11 of Verlander’s last 15 starts versus Cleveland. The right-hander is 8-7 away from spacious Comerica Park with a 4.13 ERA, compared to an 8-2 record at home and 2.62 ERA. Detroit is just 6-9 in its last 15 games and feeling pressure from the Twins while trying to win the American League Central Division. Magglio Ordonez is batting above .400 this month.

The Under is 25-10 in Detroit’s last 35 road games against a team with a losing record.

Key Injuries - Jarrod Washburn (knee) is out.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 6

Indians: Baseball teams in must-win situations can be over inflated in September. But it’s hard to over price any club playing Cleveland these days. The Indians have dropped a season-high 10 straight games. They have been outscored by 40 runs in these games, an average loss of four runs per game. The Indians have managed to score only 25 runs during their losing streak despite facing a number of less-than-imposing starters including Kyle Davis, Carl Pavano, Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Clayton Mortensen, Brett Anderson, Cio Gonzalez and Dana Eveland. Cleveland is 3-14 in its last 17 versus a right-handed starter. The Indians have dropped seven of their past eight home contests. Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 9.64 ERA), acquired from the Phillies in the Cliff Lee deal, is making his fourth big league start. He’s allowed 15 earned runs, including six home runs, in 14 innings.

The Under is 21-10-1 in the Indians’ last 32 home contests.

Key Injuries - Grady Sizemore (elbow) is out.
                              Matt LaPorta (hip) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 3 (UNDER - Total of the Day)
