    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, September 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Angels host the Yankees, the Twins look for a win in Chicago, and the WNBA begins their conference championships.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

A.J. Burnett (11-9, 4.22 ERA) will take on Scott Kazmir (9-8, 5.08 ERA) on Wednesday afternoon as the Yankees conclude their series in Los Angeles. Righthander Burnett was stuck with a no-decision against the Mariners last time out despite giving up just one run over his seven innings of work. Lefthander Kazmir had another strong outing in his last trip to the hill, blanking the Rangers on six hits over his six innings. The Angels are 3-0 in Kazmir's last three outings.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Detroit at Cleveland, Baltimore at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, Boston at Kansas City, Texas at Oakland, and Minnesota at the White Sox. Brian Duensing (4-1, 3.22 ERA) will get the ball for the surging Twins in that game; lefthander Duensing has thrown 13 1-3 scoreless innings over his last two starts. Mark Buehrle (12-9, 3.84 ERA) goes for the ChiSox; the lefthander has lost two straight (eight runs in13 innings).

Over in the National League the Phillies will send Cole Hamels (10-9, 4.07 ERA) to the mound on the road against the Marlins and Rick VandenHurk (2-2, 4.24 ERA). Lefthander Hamels has won each of his last two starts, holding the Nats and Mets to two earned runs over 14 2-3 innings of work (while fanning 16 batters). Righthander VandenHurk hasn't picked up a win since August 10, but the Marlins are 3-0 over his last three starts (four earned runs over 15 innings).

Rounding out the NL slate for Wednesday: Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Washington, Atlanta at the Mets, the Cubs at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, San Francisco at Arizona, and St. Louis at Houston. John Smoltz (1-1, 3.21 ERA in the NL) goes for the Cards; St. Louis won his last two starts against the Cubs and Brewers. The Astros send Bud Norris (5-3, 5.07 ERA) to the hill; righthander Norris held the Brewers to one run over five innings in his last start.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA's conference finals tip off on Wednesday night, with Indiana at Detroit and Phoenix at Los Angeles. The Mercury were the last team to advance past the first round, as they topped San Antonio 100-92 on Monday night; Diana Taurasi had 30 points for Phoenix in that win. Los Angeles won their first-round series 2-1 over Seattle. The two Eastern Conference semifinals were both sweeps, with Indiana getting past Washington, and Detroit knocking out Atlanta.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Wednesday, September 23

      Huff and tough

The Detroit Tigers could have their hands full with lefthander David Huff, who quietly has become the most effective starter for the Cleveland Indians. In his last four starts, Huff is 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP, lasting six innings each time. The visiting Tigers are -123.

      This Cougar has dull claws

Washington State already had enough problems, playing its first road game of the season against USC, which has to be looking to vent after last week's inexplicable loss to Washington. Now the Cougars will be without top rusher James Montgomery, who suffered a leg injury in last week's win over SMU and is out for the season. Montgomery had 167 yards and averaged 4.5 yards per carry for the Cougars, who are +45 against the Trojans.

      Life of Brian

Minnesota Twins rookie lefthander Brian Duensing is keeping his team in the postseason hunt with his performance as a starter. As a reliever this season, Duensing is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 30 1-3 innings. As a starter, he is 4-0 with a 1.70 ERA in 42 1-3 innings. The Twins are -104 at the Chicago White Sox.

      Returning Rockies

Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy said closer Huston Street, who has been out since Sept. 1 with biceps tendinitis, is ready to return to the mound. The Rockies are -203 vs. San Diego. Tracy also said Aaron Cook, sidelined since Aug. 22 with an elbow strain, will start Friday vs. St. Louis and be limited to 70 pitches.

      Sparks need to be "stronger"

If the Los Angeles Sparks want to reach the WNBA Finals, they will have to get there without playing a home game. Game One of the Western Conference finals vs. the Phoenix Mercury has been moved to UCLA's Pauley Pavilion due to a Britney Spears concert at Staples Center. LA is giving three points with a total of 177.

Not living up to his name

The Cincinnati Reds have played under the total in the last six games started by righthander Homer Bailey, who has allowed eight runs - and just two homers - in 39 1-3 innings in that span. No more than eight runs have been scored in any of Bailey's last six starts. The Reds are -116 at Pittsburgh with a total of 8.5.

      Shocking development

The defending WNBA champion Shock have surged into the Eastern Conference finals behind Deanna Nolan, who is averaging 20.8 points in her last 13 games while leading Detroit to an 11-2 record. During the season, Nolan scored 22 points in Detroit's lone win over Indiana and averaged just 11.0 points in the three losses. The host Shock are -2 over the Fever in Game One with a total of 146.5.

      Notable Quotable

"I also understand the situation we're in, the business end of where we are and the realities of where we are. That's not for me to decide. I've been here for a long time and I'm very vested in this organization, so you always want to see it through. We'll see what happens."

-- Indians manager Eric Wedge, responding to a question about his job security. Cleveland has lost seven straight games to fall into last place in the weak AL Central with a 61-88 record.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

Odds on college football teams winning the national championship:

-- Florida 10-11-- Need to find weapons other than Tebow.

-- Texas 3-1-- Surprised they didn't beat Texas Tech by more.

-- Alabama 6-1-- Superior coach, inexperienced quarterback.

-- California 12-1-- Key will be if QB Riley can hit on big plays.

-- Penn State 15-1-- Revenge game against the Hawkeyes this week.

-- Oklahoma 15-1-- With an injured Bradford? No freakin' way.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13............

        13) Chargers-- Scored 26 points vs Ravens despite red zone struggles-- they need to run ball better, even with LT out.

        12) Broncos-- Thru two weeks, is Brandon Stokely the NFL's MVP?

        11) Patriots-- Brady struggled without Welker; unbeaten Falcons and BC alum Ryan invade Beantown this weekend.

        10) Cowboys-- From 2003-08, three teams ran ball for 239+ yards but lost; this past weekend alone, three teams did the same thing, and Dallas was one of them. Romo has to cut down on costly turnovers.

        9) Steelers-- Didn't force turnover in Polamalu's first game out; hard to tell a lot about them yet. They've won last eight visits to Cincinnati.

        8) 49ers-- Only battle of unbeatens this year is 49ers at Vikings, but no matter what, Singletary's team already has two divisional wins.

        7) Vikings-- The way they bring in different QB every year, Peterson is this generation's Eric Dickerson, great RB who never got to Super Bowl because his team bumbled its attempts to find a competent QB.

        6) Colts-- Miami converted 15-21 on third down, Indy averaged 12.3 yards/pass attempt, in an exciting, strange game Monday night.

        5) Jets-- Haven't allowed an offensive TD so far. Backing up all the talk so far, but a desperate Tennessee team comes to Swamp this weekend.

        4) Falcons-- Have lot of ways to go on offense. Interesting game up in Foxboro this week for their road opener.

        3) Giants-- Young WRs Manningham, Smith stepping up so far, and the result is pair of divisional wins heading into trap game at Tampa.

        2) Ravens-- Offense is finally carrying its share of the load. How great a play did Ray Lewis make to seal the win in San Diego?

        1) Saints-- Most points in first two weeks of season in last 41 years, but in fairness, their first two opponents had QB making first NFL start.

          SCOREBOARD

          Wednesday, September 23

Philadelphia at Florida (7:10 p.m. EDT). Coming off an excellent outing, World Series MVP Cole Hamels (10-9, 4.07 ERA) gets the ball for the Phillies as they try to close in on their third consecutive NL East title.

          STARS

          Tuesday

-Alex Rodriguez, Yankees, homered and drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning of New York's 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

-Jose Lopez, Mariners, hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning to lead Seattle to a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay.

-Rafael Furcal, Dodgers, had four hits and four RBIs in Los Angeles' 14-2 victory at Washington.

-Zack Greinke, Royals, allowed two hits in six scoreless innings to lead Kansas City to a 5-1 win over Boston.

-Aaron Hill, Blue Jays, doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning of Toronto's 6-5 win over Baltimore.

-Scott Rolen and Joey Votto, Reds. Rolen had three hits and three RBIs and Votto had three doubles in Cincinnati's 10-4 win over Pittsburgh.

-Edwin Jackson, Tigers, pitched seven shutout innings in Detroit's 3-1 win at Cleveland to improve to 4-0 in five starts against the Indians this season.

-Derrek Lee, Cubs, hit his 35th homer and drove in two runs in Chicago's 7-2 victory over Milwaukee.

          BACK IN THE PLAYOFFS

Brett Gardner scored the tiebreaking run on Alex Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the ninth, and the New York Yankees celebrated clinching their 14th playoff appearance in 15 seasons Tuesday night with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs before Mariano Rivera earned his 41st save for the Yankees, who were guaranteed a return to the postseason - after missing out last year - about 55 minutes before the last out when Oakland beat the Texas Rangers 9-1.

          STRIKEOUT KING

Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds struck out three times in the Diamondbacks' 10-8 win over San Francisco on Tuesday night, breaking his major league record to reach 206 for the season. Reynolds struck out against Matt Cain in the third to tie the mark of 204 he set last year, then broke the record when rookie left-hander Madison Bumgarner got him in the fourth. He also struck out against Brian Medders in the sixth. Reynolds, who also has 43 homers and 100 RBIs, is the only player in major league history to strike out at least 200 times in a season.

          NO REPEAT

One year after reaching the World Series, Tampa Bay was eliminated from postseason contention with a 4-3 loss to Seattle.

          STREAKS

Houston's 11-2 loss to St. Louis on Tuesday night was the Astros' ninth straight, their longest skid since losing 10 straight in May 2007. ... Cleveland's 3-1 loss to Detroit was the Indians' ninth straight defeat. ... Atlanta's 3-1 victory against the Mets was the Braves' sixth straight win on the road. ... Baltimore's 6-5 loss in 11 innings to Toronto was the Orioles' sixth straight loss.

          NO SENATE RUN

Curt Schilling won't test out just how popular he is in Massachusetts. The former Boston Red Sox pitcher, beloved in the state for his starring role in ending an 86-year championship drought, announced Tuesday he isn't running for Edward M. Kennedy's seat in the U.S. Senate. Earlier this month, Schilling expressed interest in pursuing the post held by the Massachusetts Democrat for almost 50 years before he died in August. But appearing on "Joe Buck Live'' on HBO on Tuesday night, Schilling quashed the notion.

          SPEAKING

"I am biased. Part of that bias is I've seen all his starts. I have a very difficult time believing there is anybody better in the major leagues, that's as good a pitcher as Zack Greinke is in the year 2009.'' - Kansas City Royals manager Trey Hillman on Greinke's Cy Young chances.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies (-203, 9.5)

The Colorado Rockies won’t be taking the Padres lightly this time around.

The Rockies are hosting their NL West rivals for three games after dropping 2-of-3 meetings in San Diego last week. Those losses have slimmed Colorado’s lead in the Wild Card race to just four games heading into Tuesday’s series opener.

Colorado’s offense was to blame for those previous defeats to the Padres. In three games, the Rox managed to score just nine runs – with four of those coming in their Game 1 victory. On the road this season, Colorado is batting a dismal .237 and averages just over four runs per game.

Thankfully, for Rockies backers, this series brings the team home from a nine-game road swing. Colorado is hitting .285 inside Coors Field and scores an average of 1.5 runs more at home this season.

                  Pick: Colorado -203

Philadelphia Phillies at Florida Marlins (+147, 8.5)

Having an arm like Cole Hamels on the bump has its advantages. But while the crafty southpaw’s stuff is mind blowing, it is his ability to go deep into games that makes his valuable to bettors - especially with the Phillies and Marlins coming off a double header Tuesday.

With both teams dipping into their bullpens twice Tuesday, Hamels’ stamina on the hill will be doubly important. He’s gone at least six innings in four starts and has an average lifetime of more than six innings per start this season.

His counterpart, Rick VandenHurk, has the shelf life of ice cream on a hot Florida day. The Marlins starter has lasted an average of just over five innings in nine starts this year and has gone at least six innings just once in his last six trips to the hill.

Florida has been forced to burn through an average of four relievers in each of VandenHurk’s last six outings. The Marlins used three relievers for four innings in Game 1's 9-3 loss and then only went to the pen for one inning in a 3-0 win in Game 2 Tuesday.

While the right-hander has performed well in most of those starts, the Marlins post a 4-2 over/under mark in that span.

                  Pick: Over 8.5

                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Scott Kazmir (9-8, 5.08 ERA), Los Angeles Angels

The season started to turn for the better for Kazmir just before Tampa Bay shipped him over to the West Coast. After a disastrous start to the year, the lefty has delivered quality starts in seven straight outings.

The Halos are 3-1 in the four starts Kazmir has made for them and the under is 6-0 over his last six trips to the hill. The former Mets prospect owns a 1.42 ERA with Los Angeles.

“He pitched a terrific game,” manager Mike Scioscia told reporters following Kazmir’s latest start. “Scott’s important to our rotation. He’s given us four good starts.”

Cole Hamels (10-9, 4.07), Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies ace is rounding into form with the playoffs just around the corner. The former World Series MVP is 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA in four September starts. The Phils have won four of his last five starts and the under is 7-0 over his last seven appearances.

“There’s nothing better than pitching at home in September,” Hamels told reporters following a masterful performance against the Nationals last week. “The fans are great and it kind of gives you that extra motivation.”

                    Slumping

Chad Billingsley (12-10, 4.05), Los Angeles Dodgers

Is Billingsley running out of gas? This guy had a 9-3 record and a 2.75 ERA in the middle of June. Since then he’s gone 3-7 with a 5.40 ERA.

His last appearance came out of the bullpen and, after getting tagged for two runs in under two innings of work, there’s whispers he might lose his rotation spot when the playoffs roll around.

“I don’t think he’s got the same swagger that he’s had before,” an NL scout told the Los Angeles Times. “I’ve heard [about his injured hamstring]. I’ve heard when the foot lands one way it does this. There’s a lot of theories there.

                    “I think it’s confidence.”

Scott Richmond (6-10, 5.31), Toronto Blue Jays

Jays fans know all about this guy’s inability to keep crooked numbers of the scoreboard. Toronto has won just one of his last nine starts and he sports a monstrous 7.79 ERA over his last five games.

“He’s been having trouble with his location for a while,” Jays manager Cito Gaston told reporters shortly after a 2 1-3 innings appearance a week back. “Tonight was bad location. No control with is fastball.”

The over is also 8-2 over his last 10 trips to the bump.

St. Louis Cardinals at Houston Astros [8:05 PM ET]

Cardinals (-$1.40, O/U 9 under -$1.15): The Cardinals are waltzing to the NL Central Division title going 36-16 in their last 52 games. This includes 15 victories in their past 18 road matchups. St. Louis, however, is 2-6 in its last eight meetings in Houston. John Smoltz (3.6, 6.22 ERA) pitched six innings last Friday against the Cubs after sitting out for 10 days to give his shoulder additional rest. The 42-year-old right-hander gave up two runs in the first inning and then held Chicago scoreless for the next five innings allowing only three singles. Smoltz had surrendered seven earned runs and 12 hits in his two previous starts spanning 11 innings. St. Louis is 4-1 in Smoltz’s last five starts. The under is 35-18-2 in the Cardinals’ last 55 games versus National League Central Division foes. The under is 21-8-1 during the past 30 times the Cardinals and Astros have met.

                            Key Injuries - None.

Astros: The Astros are headed for their first 90-loss season since 1991 after Cecil Cooper predicted Houston would win 90 games. Cooper no longer is around to offer predictions since the Astros canned their manager. The Astros are mired in a nine-game losing streak. They’ve scored 20 runs during their losing skid. Houston has won 10 of the last 13 times it has been a home underdog, though. Rookie Bud Norris is facing St. Louis for the second time in his young career. He threw seven scoreless innings against the Cardinals in his first Major League Start on Aug. 2 at Busch Stadium. Norris allowed just two hits with four walks and five strikeouts. This is his 10th start. Norris, who is 5-3 with a 5.07 ERA, last pitched on Friday in Milwaukee. He yielded one run and three hits in five innings with eight strikeouts.

The Under is 22-10 in Houston’s last 32 games.

Key Injuries - Roy Oswalt (back) is out.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox [8:10 PM ET]

Twins: Despite injuries to key hitters, the Twins are playing well winning eight of their past nine games as they chase the Tigers. Denard Span, batting .305, is day-to-day after getting hit in the helmet on Monday. The Twins are already without All-Star Justin Morneau and Joe Crede, both of whom are out with back trouble. Brian Duensing (4-1, 3.22 ERA) will look to continue his impressive run since moving into Minnesota’s starting rotation. Duensing is 4-0 with a 1.70 ERA since becoming a starter. The southpaw shut out Detroit last Friday for 6 1/3 innings, giving up four hits. This already will be his third start versus the White Sox. He last faced them on Sept. 2 and held them scoreless for seven innings although not factoring in the decision. The Twins are just 6-12 in their last 18 games when going against a left-handed starter.

The Under is 7-1-1 in Minnesota’s past nine road contests.

The Under is 8-2-2 the past 12 times the Twins have faced a left-handed starter.

During this time frame he’s allowed 89 hits and 38 earned runs over 69 2/3 innings. He is 12-9 on the season with a 3.84 ERA. The White Sox have dropped six of their last seven games, scoring one or fewer runs in four of those contests. Chicago is 6-16 in its last 22 American League Central Division matchups. The White Sox have defeated Minnesota 10 of the past 14 times at home. Buehrle has a lifetime record of 23-15 against Minnesota. He is 2-2 this season versus the Twins with a 5.28 ERA. Jermaine Dye is batting only .105 in his last 11 games. The White Sox have been a big under team this season. The under is 41-18-1 in Chicago’s lat 60 games.

The Under is 11-4 in the White Sox’s last 15 home games.
