    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Royals host the Red Sox, the Yankees take the field in Los Angeles, and the Phillies and Marlins play a pair in Florida.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Paul Byrd (1-1, 5.79 ERA) will get the ball for Boston on Tuesday night as the Red Sox continue their series in Kansas City. Righthander Byrd is coming off back-to-back no-decisions against the Angels and Orioles, but he surrendered just five earned runs over those 10 1-3 innings of work. The Royals will counter Byrd with ace Zack Greinke (14-8, 2.14 ERA). Righthander Greinke blanked the Tigers over five innings last time out, but has been dealing with a bruised biceps.

Also on the American League schedule for Tuesday: Detroit at Cleveland, Baltimore at Toronto, Seattle at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at the White Sox, Texas at Oakland, and the Yankees at the Angels. Chad Gaudin (1-0, 3.68 ERA) is expected to start for New York in that contest; righthander Gaudin has allowed just four earned runs over his last two starts (11 2-3 innings). Los Angeles sends Ervin Santana (7-8, 5.43 ERA) to the hill in search of his first win since August 22.

Over in the National League the Phillies and Marlins will stage a twin bill down in Florida on Tuesday, beginning at 4:10pm ET. Philadelphia is slated to start Joe Blanton (10-7, 3.97 ERA) and Jamie Moyer (12-9, 5.05 ERA) in those contests, while the Marlins give the ball to Josh Johnson (15-4, 3.01 ERA) and Anibal Sanchez (2-7, 4.50 ERA). Ace righthander Johnson pitched the Marlins past the Cardinals last time out, surrendering a single earned run over six innings pitched.

Rounding out Tuesday's Senior Circuit schedule: the Dodgers at Washington, Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Atlanta at the Mets, the Cubs at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, San Francisco at Arizona, and St. Louis at Houston. Joel Pineiro (14-11, 3.11 ERA) will seek his 15th win of the season for the Cards; righthander Pineiro has lost each of his last two outings. Roy Oswalt (8-6, 4.12 ERA) will miss his Tuesday outing for the Astros; he's now been shut down for the season.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, September 22

      The mistake by the lake

The Cleveland Indians are back home, which means their 10-game road losing streak is on hold until Oct. 1. They can, however, continue their overall slides of eight in a row and 12 of 13 when they host the Detroit Tigers. Aaron Laffey, who had been pitching well, is on the mound and has allowed six earned runs in each of his last two starts. The Indians are +125.

      Another L for The D

Apparently not content with simply losing games, the Detroit Lions are now losing players. Winless in 19 games since Dec. 23, 2007, the Lions announced Monday that linebacker Ernie Sims, one of their better run-stoppers, has a "significant" shoulder injury. Lions coach Jim Schwartz gave no other details but said there is a chance Sims could miss some time.

Sims had 14 tackles and a fumble recovery in the first two games and has never missed an NFL contest in three-plus seasons with the Lions, who allowed 72 points in their first two games. Sims would be replaced by either Jordon Dizon or rookie DeAndre Levy. Detroit is getting 6.5 points from visiting Washington with a total of 38.5 on Sunday.

      Under where?

Oakland's Trevor Cahill is 3-1 with three no-decisions in his last seven starts. He has given up just one homer and not allowed more than three earned runs in any of those outings. The A's are 6-1 against the under in that stretch and are -125 with a total of 8.5 vs. the Rangers, who have the best under mark (90-50-8) in baseball.

Angels righthander Ervin Santana has pitched to the under in his last five starts, allowing just 13 runs in 31 2-3 innings while receiving just 12 runs of support. The Angels are -120 with a total of 10 against the Yankees and potentially combustible Chad Gaudin.

Under bettors have cashed in seven of the last eight starts made by White Sox starter John Danks, who is 3-1 with four no-decisions in that span but has pitched at least six innings each time. The White Sox are -155 with a total of 9.0 vs. the Minnesota Twins.

      Jerry-rigged

At times this season, Tom Brady has not seemed as fearless in the pocket as he was before last season's injury. He may get a break from the pressure this week when the New England Patriots face the Atlanta Falcons, who have serious depth issues on their defensive line after announcing Monday that rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry is out for the season with a knee injury.

Jerry will be replaced by Thomas Johnson, who before this season had not played in the NFL since 2006. The Falcons also have Trey Lewis, who sat out last season with a knee injury and hasn't played this year, and Vance Walker, who was signed off the practice squad. Atlanta is +4 at New England with a total of 44.5.

      Nothing noble about this Duke

The Pirates are 1-8 in the last nine starts made by lefthander Zach Duke, who is 1-5 with a 5.33 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP in that span. Pittsburgh is -113 vs. Cincinnati.

      A peek ahead

Something's gotta give in Thursday's SEC matchup between Mississippi and South Carolina. The Rebels are 7-0 straight up and against the spread in their last seven games. The Gamecocks have covered their first three games this season, two as an underdog. Mississippi is -3 at South Carolina.

      Notable quotable

"I was trying too hard on both of them. That’s what happens to a kicker when you hook them. I thought the first one was going to sneak in, but I didn’t give the second one a chance. I’m just embarrassed because these guys fought their tails off to win the game."

-- Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed, who missed field goals of 38 and 43 yards in the fourth quarter of a 17-14 loss at Chicago. In Week One, Reed kicked the tying and winning field goals in an overtime victory over Tennessee.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

Yes, its only 22 days until my Las Vegas trip; here are some possible things for me to do during my six days/nights there........

-- Lakers-Kings NBA exhibition game @ Thomas & Mack Center.

-- PGA Tour is in Las Vegas that week.

-- Carrot Top has his comedy show at the Luxor.

-- UNLV plays Utah that week in bigtime college football, and in the new UFL, Jim Fassel's Las Vegas team plays New York.

-- 2009 World Monopoly Championship tournament.

-- I am told gambling is legal in Las Vegas-- excellent!!!!

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

        13) So my friend Big Dawg is playing golf Monday, and while he is on a green putting, Air Force One flies right over!!! President Obama was in our area today. It takes a lot to impress the Big Dawg, but no doubt he was impressed. He says its a very, very big airplane.

        12) Was there any doubt Jerry Jones was going to announce Cowboys had the biggest crowd in NFL history Sunday night?

        11) Give me one good reason why Michael Crabtree hasn't signed yet; seriously-- one freakin' reason that would make any sense. Anyone?

        10) Scumweasel agent Scott Boras has done couple tongue-in-cheek commercials on ESPN-- the guy looks a lot like Cincinnati Bearcats' football coach Brian Kelly.

        9) 15 of 32 NFL games have been decided by six or less points.

        8) Some people in NFL circles think the Jaguars screwed up when they didn't lower ticket prices this season; as a result, their season ticket base dropped from 42,000 to 25,000- none of their '09 games will sell out.

        7) Dallas Cowboy opponents have thrown 80 passes in two games, and Cowboys have yet to record a sack or an interception.

        6) Giant-Dallas game Sunday night was highest-rated primetime game in 11 years, since a Denver-Miami game in December of '98.

        5) Underdogs are 9-5 vs spread in NFL divisional games this year so far; home favorites are 3-7, home dogs are 2-1.

        4) On their first three drives Sunday, Tennessee Titans scored three TDs gained 207 yards on 16 plays...........rest of the game, on 10 drives, they gained 237 yards on 45 plays, scoring one TD and one FG.

        3) Saints led 17-13 at halftime, then Philly turned ball over twice in first 3:21 of third quarter and the cow was out of the barn. New Orleans had scoring drives of 22-24 yards to make the game 31-13 and that was that.

        2) Jet coaches are making good adjustments at halftime; on each teams' first drive of third quarter, Jets have outgained opponents 143-minus-1 and outscored them 14-0.

        1) Tuesday, November 17, ESPN is showing 24 consecutive hours of live college basketball; thats right, there will be live games starting at 6am in New Jersey, 8am in Buffalo, 10am in Virginia, noon here in Albany (Northeastern-Siena, a pretty good game). The 2am-4am games are from California and Hawai'i, both 11pm local time starts. These games are on a Tuesday, so not a lot of classes for the players that day.

Minnesota Twins at Chicago White Sox (-165, 9)

The Twins are a part of the only divisional race that’s still relevant. There are only a couple weeks left to the regular season but Minnesota is still within reach of the division-leading Tigers.

The injuries to third baseman Joe Crede and former AL MVP Justin Morneau haven’t slowed down the Twins too much. They’re 6-1 in their last seven games entering Monday’s series finale against Detroit.

The White Sox, on the other hand, gave up on their season almost a month ago. Last week there was talk Chicago was considering shutting down starters Gavin Floyd and Mark Buehrle for the remaining of the year.

              Pick: Twins

Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers (-110, 9)

If there’s ever been a case of addition by subtraction, we saw it when Cubs GM Jim Hendry suspended Milton Bradley for the rest of the season.

The moody outfielder is unhappy in Chicago and became a distraction to the team. It doesn’t sound like Bradley will play another game in a Cubs uniform, which means Chicago will have to swallow the remaining $20 million on his contract.

Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez agrees with Hendry’s decision.

“If you don’t want to be here, send him home,” he told the Chicago Tribune.

Look for the Cubbies to play looser tonight without Bradley sulking on the pine.

              Pick: Cubs

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Zack Greinke (14-8, 2.14 ERA), Kansas City Royals

Greinke is returning to his super-human self. He’s given up just earned one run over his last four starts while striking out 42 against just six walks.

The Royals have won four of his last five starts and the under is 5-1-1 in his last seven outings.

He got hit by a line drive in his upper arm in his last start but it wasn’t serious enough to keep him from starting Tuesday.

Jair Jurrjens (12-10, 2.75), Atlanta Braves

You can count on a solid pitching performance each time this young hurler takes the bump. He’s delivered quality starts in seven straight appearances with the under cashing in five of those games.

Jurrjens would have at least three or four more wins if it weren’t for a lack of run production from his Atlanta teammates.

“He keeps us in every ballgame and he’s just been dominant all year,” catcher Brian McCann said following eight shutout innings against the Cards earlier this month.

Jorge De La Rosa (15-9, 4.17), Colorado Rockies

De La Rosa has been a huge cash earner for baseball bettors. If you won a bet on the Rockies, there’s a good chance he was on the mound. The Rockies have won 15 of his last 17 starts.

He is 3-0 with a 1.04 ERA in his four September outings, including holding the Giants scoreless over eight innings in his last start.

“On the biggest stage of his career, in the biggest game of his career, he pitched the best game of his career,” Colorado manager Jim Tracy told reporters after the 4-3 win. “That’s exactly what took place tonight. That was as good a game as he has pitched I’ll guarantee you in his career.”

                Slumping

Edwin Jackson (12-7, 3.37), Detroit Tigers

The front end of that Tiger starting rotation doesn’t look so intimidating any more, not with the wind out of the sails of this flame-throwing righty.

Jackson has given his club a quality performance just once in his last four outings. The Tigers dropped both his last two starts with the total cashing each time too.

                  SCOREBOARD

                  Tuesday, September 22

Boston at Kansas City (8:10 p.m. EDT). Zack Greinke tries to strengthen his Cy Young Award credentials - the Royals' ace has allowed more than 2 runs just once in his last seven starts.

                  STARS

                  Monday

-Joe Saunders, Angels, pitched into the ninth inning and Los Angeles beat the Yankees 5-2 in a matchup of AL division leaders, preventing New York from clinching a playoff spot.

-Chipper Jones, Braves, homered and drove in four runs, leading Atlanta to an 11-3 rout of the New York Mets.

-Nick Blackburn, Twins, pitched seven sharp innings and Minnesota beat the fading Chicago White Sox 7-0 for its seventh victory in eight games. The Twins moved within 2 1/2 games of first-place Detroit in the AL Central.

-Mark DeRosa, Cardinals, homered twice and hit a two-run double to help St. Louis beat Houston 7-3, reducing its magic number to three for clinching the NL Central title.

-Chase Headley, Padres, homered and had a career-high five hits, including a go-ahead double in the 11th inning of San Diego's 11-6 win at Pittsburgh.

-Derrek Lee, Cubs, homered and drove in four runs in Chicago's 10-2 victory at Milwaukee.

                  CHANGE AT THE TOP

Houston fired manager Cecil Cooper with 13 games left in another disappointing season. Third-base coach Dave Clark was named interim manager and things didn't change much Monday night as the Astros lost their eighth straight, 7-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals, to drop to 70-80. General manager Ed Wade said more moves could be coming for a franchise just four years removed from its only World Series appearance. Houston went 171-170 under Cooper, hired on Aug. 27, 2007, to replace Phil Garner. Cooper became the fourth manager to get fired this season, all in the National League. Arizona dismissed Bob Melvin on May 7, Colorado replaced Clint Hurdle on May 29 and Washington fired Manny Acta on July 13.

                  MONEY MAN

Texas pitcher Kevin Millwood completed enough innings to earn himself a $12 million contract next season. The right-hander did not allow an earned run in seven innings of a 10-3 victory at Oakland. He needed to go 4 1-3 innings to reach 180 for the season and guarantee the fifth and final year of his contract.

                  ARM RACE

Cuban pitcher Aroldis Chapman, who defected in July, has established provisional residency in Andorra. In a statement, Chapman's agent said the pitcher "has been granted provisional passive residency'' in the country pending completion of the process. He has sent his residency materials to Major League Baseball so he can be declared a free agent, the statement said. The next step is for the commissioner's office to review Chapman's papers. If he is declared a free agent, all 30 big league teams would be notified that Chapman is available for bidding. Chapman pitched twice for Cuba in this year's World Baseball Classic. The 21-year-old left-hander has a 100 mph fastball and is considered by scouts to be one of the top pitching prospects in the world.

                  EMPTY SEATS

David Purcey (1-2) allowed one run and four hits in a season-high 7 2-3 innings, pitching Toronto to a 9-2 victory over Baltimore. It was Purcey's first win since pitching eight shutout innings on Sept. 7, 2008, against Tampa Bay. Not many fans were there to see it, though. Attendance was 11,598, the third straight game the Blue Jays have drawn fewer than 12,000 fans. Toronto's all-time low is 10,074, set April 17, 1979, against the Chicago White Sox.

                  BUSTING LOOSE

Kansas City rallied for six runs in the sixth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 12-9, the most runs the Royals have scored in an inning since Sept. 24, 2008. It was the 11th win in 14 games for the Royals, who had lost nine of 11 to Boston.

                  GROUNDED

Toronto shortstop Marco Scutaro will likely miss the rest of the season after an MRI revealed a tear in his right heel. Scutaro left Sunday's game at Tampa Bay after he felt something pop in his sore heel while charging a grounder. The 33-year-old Scutaro has been bothered by heel pain since late July.

                  GIANT INJURY

San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez left a game against Arizona in the first inning with a twisted left knee. Sanchez was injured when he went up to catch a high throw back to the infield from Aaron Rowand after Justin Upton flied out to center. Sanchez stayed in until Mark Reynolds, the next batter, homered, then had to be helped off the field. There was no immediate word on how long Sanchez could be sidelined. He was acquired by the Giants in a trade with Pittsburgh on July 30.

                  SERIOUS TROUBLE

A top prospect for the San Francisco Giants was charged with murder in the death of a 25-year-old man last weekend at a bar in the Dominican Republic. Angel Villalona, who received a club-record $2.1 million bonus when he was signed by the Giants in 2006, wore a bulletproof vest to his hearing at a court in the city of La Romana. He pleaded innocent to the murder charge. The 19-year-old Villalona could face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in the Saturday night shooting death of Mario Felix de Jesus Velete. The first baseman played in 74 games with Class-A San Jose this season, batting .267 with nine home runs and 42 RBIs. Baseball America chose him as the Giants' top prospect before the 2008 season and he was selected for the Futures Game during All-Star festivities that year.

                  SPEAKING

"I expected to win, but it's been a pretty hectic day. This is bittersweet, but I enjoyed what I was doing and I look forward to the last 12 days.'' - Interim manager Dave Clark after Houston lost its eighth straight in his debut, 7-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals. Clark was named the Astros' interim manager for the final two weeks of the season when Cecil Cooper was fired Monday. Clark was Cooper's third-base coach.

                    This Day in Baseball

On September 22 in Baseball History...

1911 - Cy Young, forty-four, beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0 for his 511th and final Major League victory.

1920 - A Chicago grand jury convenes to investigate charges that eight White Sox players conspired to fix the 1919 World Series.

1935 - The Boston Braves lose their 110th game for a new National League record. They will lose 115, which remains the record until the 1962 expansion New York Mets lose 120 in a 162-game schedule. The Braves' winning percentage of .248 is a Twentieth Century low in the National League.

1936 - The Detroit Tigers swept the St. Louis Browns 12-0 and 14-0 to record the biggest double shutout in Major League history.

1947 - The Dodgers win the pennant while idle. The Cards lose to the Cubs to clinch the Dodgers' first title since 1941, this time with a five-game margin.

1953 - The Dodgers tie the record for the most wins in a home park, beating Pittsburgh 5-4. They go an incredible 60-17 at Ebbets Field, tying the record of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1942. Only the 61 wins of the San Francisco Giants in 1962 in an 81-game home season will surpass the mark.

1954 - Karl Spooner of Brooklyn became the first in the majors to strike out 15 in his first game, and the Dodgers beat the New York Giants 3-0.

1957 - Duke Snider's 39th and 40th home runs are the last that will be hit at Ebbets Field. The Duke of Flatbush ties Ralph Kiner's National League mark of hitting at least 40 home runs in five consecutive seasons. Phillies pitcher Robin Roberts, who has a penchant for throwing home run balls, is the loser, 7-3.

1959 - The White Sox clinch their first pennant in 40 years with a 4-2 win over the second-place Indians. Early Wynn gets the win, with Gerry Staley saving the game in the ninth.

1961 - Jim Gentile's fifth grand slam of 1961 ties the Major League single-season record in Baltimore's 8-6 win over Chicago. Each of Gentile's slams comes with Chuck Estrada pitching for the Orioles.

1966 - The Baltimore Orioles clinched their first American League pennant in 22 years with a 6-1 victory over the Kansas City A's. Their last pennant came in 1944 when they were the St. Louis Browns.

1969 - Willie Mays joins Babe Ruth in the 600-homer club with a blast off Mike Corkins while batting for rookie George Foster. Bobby Bonds sets a Major League record with his 176th strikeout as San Francisco beats San Diego 4-2.

1985 - One night after scuffling with a patron in the bar of the Yankees' Baltimore hotel, manager Billy Martin has his right arm broken by pitcher Ed Whitson in an early-morning brawl in the same bar.

1986 - Fernando Valenzuela of Los Angeles became the first Mexican to win 20 games, beating the Houston Astros 9-2 while allowing just two hits.

1987 - Wade Boggs of the Boston Red Sox reached the 200-hit mark for the fifth straight season in an 8-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

1989 - Dave Stewart becomes the first pitcher since Jim Palmer (1975-78) to win twenty games in three straight seasons by beating the Twins 5-2. It is also Stewart's 100th Major League win.

1990 - Andre Dawson of the Chicago Cubs stole his 300th base in an 11-5 loss to the New York Mets, becoming only the second player with 300 homers, 300 steals and 2,000 hits. Willie Mays was the other.

1993 - Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers faced just three Seattle batters before hurting his right elbow. Ryan finished his career with 324 wins, 5,714 strikeouts and seven no-hitters.

1993 - The Colorado Rockies played their final game of their first season and finished with a Major League home attendance record. The Rockies played before 4,483,350.

1997 - The Braves become the first team in Major League history to win six consecutive division titles (not counting the 1994 strike season) after the Mets knock off the second-place Marlins. The announcement is made in the last Braves home game of the year at Turner Field in the eighth inning of a tie game with the Expos. The Braves keep the champagne on ice until the bottom of the 11th inning when Mike Mordecai strikes out, but the ball gets away and Tony Bautista crosses home plate with the winning run.

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians [7:05 PM ET]

Tigers (-$1.45, O/U 8.5 under -$1.15): Detroit is just 4-9 in its last 13 games, but off perhaps its most important road victory since the American League Championship Series in 2006 after beating Minnesota on Sunday. Both Detroit and Cleveland were idle on Monday. Right-hander Edwin Jackson has had a nice season for Detroit going 12-7 with a 3.37 ERA. However, he’s been hit hard in his past two starts giving up 10 earned runs on 14 hits, while allowing four homers in 12 innings. Jackson is having problems with his slider leaving opposing hitters to jump on his fastball. Jackson’s ERA was just 2.86 on Aug. 21. He’s been tagged for 21 earned runs on 37 hits in his last 31 1/3 innings spanning five starts. Jackson is 3-0 with a 2.74 ERA versus the Indians this season, including allowing two earned runs in 11 innings at Progressive Field.

The Under has cashed in 13 of Jackson’s last 16 road starts.
The Under is 9-4 the past 13 times these two teams have met.

Key Injuries - Jarrod Washburn (knee) is out.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Indians: The Indians are at their lowest point having lost a season-high eight straight games. They are 1-12 in their last 13, with 10 of those defeats occurring by multiple runs. Cleveland is hoping a return to Progressive Field can turn things around after losing 11 road games in a row. Justin Masterson (4-8, 4.49 ERA) surrendered five runs on six hits and four walks in his last start, striking out six in four innings during a 5-2 road loss to Oakland on Thursday. Masterson is making the transition to being a starter. He was a reliever with Boston. He came to the Indians via a trade on July 31. Masterson had given up one earned run in six innings during his two previous starts. The right-hander has six strikeouts against the Tigers this season in 3 1/3 innings, yielding two hits and one walk.

The Under is 13-5 in Cleveland’s last 18 home games versus a right-handed starter.
The Over is 23-7-2 in the Indians’ past 32 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - Grady Sizemore (elbow) is out.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies [8:40 PM ET]

Padres: San Diego is going to finish with a losing record, but the Padres have played extremely well down the stretch. San Diego is 17-8 since Aug. 25, including winning 11 of its last 16 road contests. The Padres, however, have lost six of their past eight meetings at Coors Field. Edward Mujica (3-4, 3.26 ERA) is set to make his third start after seeing action in 63 games as a reliever. The righty has yet to pitch five innings. Mujica faced the Diamondbacks in his last start. He gave up two runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings during a 6-5 Padres victory. Mujica recorded five strikeouts and did not walk a batter. He has a 2.96 home ERA at pitcher-friendly Petco Park compared to 3.74 on the road. The over has cashed in 12 of San Diego’s past 16 road games against a team owning a winning record.

The Padres have won 5 of their last six Tuesday games.

Key injuries - Kevin Kouzmanoff (calf) is questionable.
Kyle Blanks (foot) is on the DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rockies (-$2.20, O/U 9.5 under -$1.25): The price is big despite Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa having a 4.76 ERA at home. The Rockies are 9-1, however, in De La Rosa’s past 10 starts at Coors Field. The Rockies are zeroing in on a playoff berth having won 11 of their last 16. They are 41-14 in their last 55 games versus teams with a losing mark. The Rockies also are 38-14 during their past 52 home contests. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki is batting .474 during his last five games. De La Rosa may have pitched his best game during his previous start holding the Giants scoreless on three hits in eight innings. Since beginning the year 0-6, De La Rosa has gone 15-3. The Rockies are 18-3 in De La Rosa’s past 21 starts versus clubs with a losing record. The Rockies are 47-21 in their last 68 games when facing a right-handed starter.

The Over has cashed 7 of the last eight times De La Rosa has pitched at home.

Key Injuries - Huston Street (bicep) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

                              Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for September 22, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

                              1. Quick Hits

Yankees fail to clinch a playoff spot losing in Anaheim 5-2. Their magic number remains 1 to make the post season.
The Houston Astros fire their manager Cecil Cooper.
Former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will be sentenced today for shooting himself in the leg. He'll begin serving his two year sentence immediately.
What a turnout for last nights football game in Miami against the Colts. Serena and Venus Williams, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Buffett, Gloria Estafan and Tiger Woods. The Dolphins lost anyway 27-23.

                              2. Damn Yankees

How fitting that the Yankees will probably clinch a playoff spot on the first day of fall. It's not a good day for Yankee haters. They'll be the first team to qualify for the post season. Detractors will say "sure, they bought themselves in." But to be fair, they've been buying and buying since 2000 and it hasn't paid dividends. After missing last years playoffs they spent wisely this past off season. But even with that humongous payroll they have real issues with their starting pitching. So if you belong to that legion of Yankee haters keep the faith. It's a long long way to November. (When this year's World Series will conclude.)

                              3. Rule Book

Time for a rule change in the NFL. This business of a coach calling time out, just as the kicker is about to attempt a field goal is bush league. Dallas coach Wade Phillips did it the other night against the Giants. Both the nullified kick, and the real one were good. Not only are you risking injury, it just looks amateurish. It would be like calling time just as the pitcher is in his windup or the foul shot is in the air.

                              4. Man-Genius

The hilite of Eric Mangini's stay as Jets coach? A cameo on the Sopranos. Tony spots "Mangenius" in a restaurant. After getting fired in New York he landed in Cleveland. Now comes word he fined a player 17-hundred dollars for not paying for a $3.00 bottle of water that the player drank in his hotel room during a pre-season game. Mangini is a stickler for detail. I've got a couple of details for "Mangenius" to swallow. The Browns are 0-2 and they've scored a grand total of 26 points.

                              5. Lemme in Coach

It was inevitable. Kim Clijsters of Belgium won the U.S. Open after a 2 1/2 year absence from tennis. Her fellow countrywoman, Justine Henin quit tennis last year while still ranked #1. Now Henin is coming back. Whatcha waiting for Martina, Steffi and Chris?

Happy Birthday: Rangers Stanley Cup goalie Mike Richter. 43.
Bonus Birthday: Actor Scott Baio. 48.

Today in Sports: The infamous "long count" at Soldier Field Chicago. Jack Dempsey loses to Gene Tunney after Tunney is given more than 10 seconds to recover from a knockdown. 1927.
Bonus Event: Only 413 fans show up at Yankee Stadium. And the seats were cheap! 1966.
