    Tips and Trends
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iowa at Penn State [ABC | 8:00 PM ET]

Iowa: The Hawkeyes ruined Penn State’s perfect season last year. Counting that 24-23 home win, which came on a 31-yard field goal with one second left, the Hawkeyes have won their past seven games. The victory margin has been nearly 18 points per game. The Hawkeyes caught the Nittany Lions off a big road win at Ohio State. This time around the Hawkeyes are banged-up on offense with injuries at left tackle, tight end and at wide receiver to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, who caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown last year against Penn State. After a 17-16 opening-week victory against Northern Iowa, a non-board team, the Hawkeyes have won and covered against Iowa State (35-3) and Arizona (27-17). Iowa has covered the past six times it has faced a team with a winning record. The Hawkeyes also have covered in seven of their last eight road contests.

The Under is 11-1-1 in Iowa’s last 13 games as a road underdog.
The underdog is 7-2 ATS in the series.

Key Injuries - Left tackle Bryan Bulaga (illness), tight end Tony Moeaki (ankle) and wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (hamstring) are all doubtful.

PROJECTED SCORE: 16 (Side of the Day)

Penn State (-9.5, O/U 40.5): All-Big Ten Conference quarterback Daryll Clark had his worst game of the season last year when Iowa upset Penn State erasing a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit. This year, Clark has led the 3-0 Nittany Lions to victories against Akron and Syracuse, while Evan Royster spearheaded a 31-6 win last week against Temple by rushing for 134 yards. Penn State has outscored its three foes, 90-20. This figures to be Penn State’s toughest test, though. The Nittany Lions have an inexperienced offensive line and injuries at linebacker. Sean Lee had 12 tackles and a sack versus Temple, but suffered a knee injury and is doubtful. Sophomore linebacker Nathan Stupar sprained an ankle and his status is questionable. Penn State is just 5-12-1 against the spread when favored by 3 ½ to 10 points. The Nittany Lions have failed to cover during five of the last six times they’ve been favored.

The Under is 23-9-2 in the Nittany Lions’ last 34 games following an against the spread loss.

Key Injuries - Linebacker Sean Lee (knee) is doubtful.
Linebacker Nathan Stupar (ankle) is questionable.
Linebacker Navorro Bowman (groin) is probable.

    PROJECTED SCORE: 24

Texas Tech at Houston [ESPN | 9:15 PM ET]

Texas Tech: Taylor Potts has become Texas Tech’s latest quarterback star, throwing for 1,281 yards and 12 touchdowns in three games. Thanks to Potts, the Red Raiders are averaging 444.3 yards passing per game. Potts completed 46 passes for 420 yards in last week’s 34-24 road loss to No. 2 ranked Texas. That was a tough game for the Red Raiders who hung in strong against the powerful Longhorns. Houston was idle last week. Lyle Leong, a former high school teammate of Potts, leads Texas Tech in receiving with 19 catches for 252 yards and five touchdowns. The Red Raiders have won the past five times they’ve met Houston covering four of the five. They also are 5-0 straight and 4-1 against the spread in their next game after meeting Texas. Texas Tech is 38-14 against the spread in its last 52 games following a defeat.

The Over has cashed in 7 of Texas Tech’s last nine games.

Key Injuries - Safety Franklin Mitchem (arm) is questionable.

    PROJECTED SCORE: 37

Houston (-1, O/U 74.5): The Cougars have had two weeks to celebrate their 45-35 road victory against then fifth-ranked Oklahoma State. That victory help earn the Cougars a No. 17 rating, the first time they’ve been ranked in the Top 25 in 18 years. Houston quarterback Case Keenum won Conference USA Player of the Year honors last season after passing for 5,020 yards and 44 touchdowns. He’s thrown for 725 yards and seven touchdowns in two games this season. Keenum does a good job spreading the ball around as three Houston receivers have at least 10 catches and 100 yards receiving. Keenum ranks third in passing yards per game, while the Cougars rank No. 1 nationally in scoring at 50 points per game and fifth in total offense averaging 525 yards per contest. Until knocking off Oklahoma State, though, the Cougars were 1-6 in their last seven games against Big 12 teams.

The Cougars are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games following a victory.
The under is 8-2 in Houston’s last 10 games following a bye week.

    Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 38 (OVER - Total of the Day)
