    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, September 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Vikings meet up with the Lions, the Giants seek a victory in Dallas, and the Chase gets underway in New Hampshire.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Brett Favre and his Minnesota Vikings will try to open the season with two straight wins on Sunday when they take on the Lions in Detroit. Favre went 14-of-21 for just 110 yards passing in the team's 34-20 road win over the Browns in Week 1, while Adrian Peterson rushed for 180 yards and three scores. The Lions were blasted 45-27 in New Orleans in their season opener. The Vikings are pegged as 10-point road favorites for Week 2, with the total for the game at 45.5.

Other 1:00pm ET games for Sunday: Carolina at Atlanta (-6), Cincinnati at Green Bay (-9), Arizona at Jacksonville (-3), Oakland at Kansas City (-3), New Orleans (-1) at Philadelphia, Houston at Tennessee (-6.5), St. Louis at Washington (-9.5), and New England (-3.5) at the Jets. The Patriots escaped with a 25-24 win over Buffalo on Monday night, while the Jets beat Houston 24-7 in their first matchup.

Sunday's late-afternoon games have Seattle at San Francisco (-1.5), Tampa Bay at Buffalo (-5), Pittsburgh (-3) at Chicago, Cleveland at Denver (-3), and Baltimore at San Diego (-3). The late game then has the Giants at Dallas (-3), with the Cowboys giving their stadium its regular-season debut. New York got past Washington 23-17 last week, while the Cowboys are coming off a 34-21 win over the Bucs. Tony Romo threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on Sunday, with Winnipeg at Montreal, and Edmonton at Saskatchewan. The Alouettes are big 14-point home favorites in their game, while the Riders are 4-point home faves.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.94 ERA) vs. Adam Wainwright (18-8, 2.59 ERA) in this week's Sunday Night Baseball matchup between the Cubs and Cardinals in St. Louis. Righthander Zambrano took a no-decision against the Brewers last time out, giving up five runs over his five innings of work. Righthander Wainwright picked up a rare loss in his last start, giving up two runs over seven innings against the Marlins. St. Louis had been 7-0 in Wainwright's previous seven starts.

Also on the NL slate for Sunday: Washington at the Mets, Florida at Cincinnati, San Diego at Pittsburgh, Houston at Milwaukee, Colorado at Arizona, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. Tim Lincecum (14-5, 2.30 ERA) and Randy Wolf (10-6, 2.34 ERA) are slated to start in the Giants/Dodgers game, with Cliff Lee (7-2, 2.67 ERA in the NL) and Tommy Hanson (10-3, 2.65 ERA) taking the hill for the Phillies and Braves. Hanson is coming off back-to-back scoreless outings, blanking the Mets and the Astros over 15 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, the American League's Sunday slate offers up Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at the White Sox, Detroit at Minnesota, Cleveland at Oakland, the Yankees at Seattle, and the Angels at Texas. John Lackey (10-8, 3.47 ERA) gets the ball for Los Angeles in that contest; righthander Lackey fell to the Red Sox last time out (two earned runs in 7 2-3 innings). The Rangers will counter with lefthander Derek Holland (7-11, 6.01 ERA) on Sunday.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There's one matchup on the WNBA's playoff schedule for Sunday, with Seattle hosting Los Angeles in the deciding contest of the three-game set. The Storm staved off series elimination on Friday night, getting 18 points from Swin Cash in a 75-74 home comeback win. Candace Parker had 15 points in the loss for L.A.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Chase for the Sprint Cup gets going at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon as Tony Stewart and company take the track in the Sylvania 300. Stewart is the 12/5 Vegas favorite to walk away with the championship this year, and he's followed on that odds list by Jimmie Johnson (5/2) and Jeff Gordon (9/2). Mark Martin, who heads into the Chase as the points leader, is next at 5/1 odds to claim the Cup. Denny Hamlin is fifth on that list at 19/2 odds. Joey Logano won the rain-shortened event at New Hampshire back on June 28.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, September 20

      Juan gone

Juan Pablo Montoya had no problem conquering the world of Formula 1 racing. He appears on the verge of making NASCAR his next victim. Montoya took the poll for Sunday’s Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Even better, he finished first at all three practice sessions on the track. Get Montoya (+600) at a good value, before he’s gone.

      A nickel short

Redskins third corner and extra defensive back in the team’s nickel package, Fred Smoot, is listed as doubtful for the team’s game against St. Louis with an undisclosed rib injury. The injury, however, doesn’t figure to be pivotal, as the Rams mustered a meager 191 yards passing against the Seahawks with quarterback Mark Bulger. Washington (-10) not having Smoot should be moot.

      Bird is the word

A stolen in-bounds pass and last-second layup allowed Seattle to force a decisive Game 3 in Washington on Sunday. But it was the play of guard Sue Bird that allowed the Storm to walk away with the 75-74 win. Bird was a horrendous 1-of-9 from the floor in a Game 1 loss, but was 5-of-12 in Game 2. Bird’s shot is heating up, meaning the Storm (-1) should make it rain.

      Fit to be tied

The Columbus Crew and Chicago Fire must like kissing their sisters. Because it seems every time they get together, they leave the field feeling like they just have. Five of the team’s past seven meetings have ended in a draw, including both meetings this season. And with host Columbus without injured defensive star Chad Marshall, the Crew figure to play very conservatively. Win or lose? The draw (+225) figures to be the smart play.

      Meet the Mets

Just how far should you stay away from the Mets? Well, if they are in New York, Nebraska would be a good start. The Mets were ridiculed for September collapses the past two years, going 13-12 in 2007 and 14-14 in 2008. But this year, they are a hideous 5-13, dropping 10 of their past 11. Four of their past six losses have come by a single run, and the lineup is giving away at-bats by swinging freely and averaging just 3.6 runs per game over their past 10. Avoid this train wreck if possible.

        Six-pack for Sunday

-- Twins scored four runs in bottom of 8th to beat the Tigers and chop another game off Detroit's tenuous lead in the AL Central.

-- Jake Peavy pitched for first time in 104 days and won 13-3 against the Royals-- it was his first start for the White Sox.

-- Colorado picked up a game on the Giants by pulling away from the Diamondbacks 10-4, while the Dodgers crushed San Francisco 12-1.

-- I know it doesn't matter, except to them and me, but the A's are now 11-2 in their last thirteen games. Winning is always better than losing.

-- A total of $345,000 in fines were levied after Week 1 in the NFL.

-- A player on the Cleveland Browns was fined $1,700 by the team because he didn't pay for a $3 bottle of water in his hotel room on one of the preseason road trips. Eric Mangini would be better off teaching high school gym or being an undertaker.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday....

        13) First of all, totally impressed by Tennessee, Texas Tech even though they lost Saturday; no one thought they would play as well as they did, so hats off to them. Then there is Washington, which was winless last year, and now is happy as hell after upsetting USC in Seattle. How long before Steve Sarkisian (Sark the Shark) has a contender in Seattle?

        12) Lookalikes: Sarkisian and comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

        11) Florida State was an 8-point underdog at BYU. On Gameday, FSU alum Lee Corso said his school would lose by three TDs . Then a game started, and FSU ran for 311 yards, converted 12-15 on 3rd down and didn't turn the ball over in a 54-28 beatdown of favored BYU. Wow.

        10) Sometimes when I write these wrapups, the noon games get lost in the shuffle, since it seems like they were played last week, but what a tough guy Minnesota WR Eric Decker is. Great hands, too. He got hit so hard on his first TD Saturday, he had blood streaming from his mouth as the trainers tended to him. But he kept playing, and playing well. Could be we'll be seeing him on Sundays the next few years.

        9) Alabama QB McElroy was 13-15/176 passing Saturday against an old friend; North Texas coach Todd Dodge was McElroy's high school coach in the Dallas area. Dodge's son is UNT's starting QB, but he missed the games with an injury. Bama crushed the Mean Green, 53-7/

        8) East Carolina has been outscored 41-5 in the second half this season; they've outscored those same opponents 61-49 in the first half.

        7) Lane Kiffin's wife and father-in-law both went to Florida.

        6) Greg Paulus got his first win as a QB, completing 24-35/346 and two TDs as Syracuse beat Northwestern 37-34. Its kind of amazing what he is doing, playing D-I football afer playing hoops the last four years.

        5) I go through every boxscore, every week, and I cannot remember a box like the Utah State-Texas A&M box-- both teams had 30+ first downs. You just never see a game where both teams move the ball that well, and especially when A&M had 147 penalty yards, State 66.

        4) I know it was raining at Clemson, but Boston College was 5-21 for 25 yards passing for the whole game in their 25-7 loss. Looks like the magic has finally run out for the perenially overachieving Eagles, because they just don't have a competent quarterback now.

        3) Virginia led Southern Miss 27-10 at the half in Hattiesburg Saturday, then the struggling Cavaliers let it slip away, losing 37-34. Won't be too long now before head coaching candidates will be faxing resumes to the Virginia athletic department. USM started its comeback with a 100-yard kickoff return, which has to make losing especially bitter

        2) Then there is SMU, which had the ball and a 24-7 lead with 1:30 left in the third quarter, trying for their first 3-0 start since 1984; they throw a pick-6, and wind up losing 30-27 to previously winless Washington State, so the Coogs head to LA next week off a win, which is more than their wounded opponents next week will be able to say.

        1) Last game of the day/night ended at 2:16am ET, with UNLV pulling out a dramatic 34-33 win over Hawai'i out in Vegas. Winning TD scored on an alley-oop pass to Philip Payne on the right sideline with 0:36 left.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-110, 7)

Nothing crushes postseason dreams like a 12-1 beat down.

The Dodgers laid into their NL West rivals, the Giants, Saturday afternoon, knocking around former teammate Brad Penny for seven runs in just under three innings.

Let’s see them do that to Tim Lincecum.

The Giants ace has been solid against Los Angeles this year, posting a 3.32 ERA but recording just one win in his three starts versus the Dodgers. The big reason Timmy doesn’t have those W’s is San Francisco’s bullpen.

The Giants relievers have routinely spoiled his outings against Los Angeles. Guys like Brandon Medders, Merkin Valdez, Jonathan Sanchez and even recently-designated reliever Randy Johnson have hefty ERAs against the Dodgers this season.

If Lincecum’s sore back doesn’t allow him go deep, the relievers could once again get beat up by the Dodgers lineup.

          Pick: Los Angeles -110

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-160, 7.5)

The Cardinals only needed two runs to top their NL Central rivals Saturday afternoon. The Cubs put together another embarrassing performance at the plate, scoring one run in their fourth straight loss.

Chicago actually had 10 hits in the contest but left seven men on base and struck out four times while working the count for only two base-on-balls. The Cubs were 0-for-8 with men in scoring position.

The lack of pop ruined a stellar outing from starter Ryan Dempster and dropped the Cubbies to 11 games back of St. Louis in the division.

"What are you going to do?" defeated manager Lou Piniella told the media. "Dempster really pitched well, but, you know, we squandered opportunities, too."

Both games in this series have played under the number, giving these teams a 2-6 over/under count in their last eight meetings.

          Pick: Under 7.5

            Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels

Lackey is hitting top form with the playoffs just around the corner. In his last 33 2-3 innings of work, the right-hander has allowed just three earned runs but boasts a ho-hum 2-1 record in that span.

"I've been feeling good, seriously, probably a couple months now," Lackey told the media last week. "I want to keep things rolling. The best way to stay on a roll is not analyze it too much. You've got to look ahead."

Lackey has two shutout efforts during this streak and is coming off a two-run, 7 2-3-inning performance against Boston in which he struck out six batters.

            Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves

The Braves' young stud has been the invisible man in his last two trips to the bump. Hanson hasn't allowed a run in his last 15 innings, striking out 15 batters while just walking three in those two starts.

In his 18 big-league starts, the budding ace has a 10-3 record and 2.65 ERA. Since the All-Star break, Hanson has rolled to a 6-3 record.

"I didn't know what to envision. I didn't know what to expect," Hanson told the media. "I just wanted to come up and do my best and make adjustments when I needed to. I couldn't be happier with the way everything's going. I feel like I've already learned a lot and still have a lot more stuff to learn. Hopefully I'll keep doing it at this pace and everything will be good."

            Slumping

            Derek Holland, Texas Rangers

The Rangers' fall from grace has a lot to do with their struggling pitchers. Holland is one of those arms, going 0-4 with an ERA above 13.00 in his last four trips to the mound. He's lasted just three innings in two of those starts and has served up five home runs during this skid.

In his most recent nightmarish start, the lefty went six innings and gave up five runs on eight hits against Seattle.

            Fausto Carmona, Cleveland Indians

The once-promising left-hander has been among the worst pitchers in baseball in recent weeks. Carmona, who is 3-11 this year, has lost three of his last four starts, posting 19 total runs in just 17 innings pitched in that span.

"It's frustrating for everybody and for him, first and foremost," manager Eric Wedge told the press. "But you never give into the fight. He'll keep working, and what we really need for him to do is start stringing things together."

In his most recent outing, Carmona gave up five runs in just over five innings against the Twins. He also allowed a home run in that contest, bring his total to five round trippers in his last five starts.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cubs at Cardinals
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

The National League Central Division takes center stage when the Cardinals host the Cubs at Busch Stadium under the ESPN lights.

St. Louis sends Adam Wainwright (18-8, 2.59 ERA) to the hill against Chicago’s Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.94 ERA) in a matchup of right-handers.

              Down for the count

Entering this series, the Cubs were about to see their playoff chances come to an end. Down seven games in the Wild Card chase with 17 games remaining in the season, Chicago needs a miracle.

Then again, it was only two years ago when Philadelphia was 7.5 games out of the chase with 17 games to go and, thanks to another choke-job by the New York Mets, they rallied back to gain a playoff pass.

To make matters worse, the Cubs rotation took a hit Thursday when Rich Harden lasted just three innings while throwing 71 pitches in Wednesday's 9-5 loss to the Brewers. He’s out for at least one start and could likely miss the rest of the season.

              Put it on ice

Despite sputtering a bit, St. Louis is still in solid shape. The Redbirds entered this series with a major league-high nine-game lead and only 15 games remaining.

After hosting the Cubs, the Cardinals will journey on a nine-game trip, in search of a division clinch. They will travel to Houston, Colorado and Cincinnati before wrapping up with three at home against Milwaukee on Oct. 2-4.

              Get the champagne ready.

              Upon closer examination

The Cardinals have winning records against only two National League teams with winning records namely Chicago (8-5, entering this series) and Los Angeles (5-2).

Overall, the Cardinals are 60-33 against losing teams 25-29 against winning teams.

              A perfect 10

The odds-on favorite for NL MVP honors this season, 1B Albert Pujols clubbed his way to a 10th multi-hit homer game on September 9, tying Marc McGwire’s single-season club record.

"I'm not a home run hitter,” Pujols said after hitting his major-league leading 46th and 47th homers against the Brewers.

              Yin and yang

Wainwright attempts to pick up win No. 19 for the second time after a tough-luck 2-1 loss to the Marlins Tuesday. He figures to press teammate Chris Carpenter for Cy Young honors this year.

The Cardinals are 6-0 in Wainwright’s last six starts against the Cubs. He’s posted a 2.41 ERA in those games.

Zambrano has struggled, going 2-3 with a 6.95 ERA, since returning off the DL with an elbow injury. He is, however, 11-2 with a 3.02 ERA in his last 13 team-starts against St. Louis.

                          SCOREBOARD

                          Sunday, Sept. 20

Philadelphia at Atlanta (1:35 p.m. EDT). Tommy Hanson (10-3) hasn't allowed a run in his past two starts, and will face Cliff Lee (7-2), coming off a six-hit shutout.

                          STARS

                          Saturday

-CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira, Yankees. Sabathia won his AL leading 18th game allowing four hits and one run in seven innings. Teixeira homered twice and drove in a season-high five runs and the Yankees resumed their cruise to the AL East title with a 10-1 win over the Mariners.

-Mark Ellis, Athletics, homered to break the franchise record for second basemen and the Athletics extended their winning streak to six games with an 8-4 win over Cleveland.

-Matt Garza, Rays, struck out 10 while stopping a personal nine-game winless streak and Tampa Bay beat Toronto 4-0.

-Jon Lester, Red Sox, pitched into the seventh inning to win his sixth straight decision, and Boston feasted on the Orioles bullpen in an 11-5 win.

-Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies, homered for a career-best fourth game in a row, and the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 10-4 to open a little breathing space in the wild-card race.

-Ross Gload, Marlins, hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Florida to a 3-2 win over Cincinnati.

-Tim Redding, Mets, pitched splendidly into the eighth inning and New York ended its six-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over Washington.

-Henry Blanco, Padres, hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to lead San Diego to a 2-1 victory over Pittsburgh.

                          OUT OF THE PEN

San Francisco's Randy Johnson made his first relief appearance since pitching for the Yankees in the 2005 American League division series. He faced three batters in the sixth, giving up consecutive doubles to Rafael Furcal and Andre Ethier before retiring pinch-hitter Juan Pierre. Johnson was activated from the 60-day DL on Wednesday. Johnson's last regular-season relief outing came on July 18, 2001, at San Diego, when he struck out 16 in completion of a suspended game.

                          FINALLY SOME RUNS

Texas ended a 25-inning scoreless drought with a run in the third inning of a 3-2 victory over the Angels. The Rangers finished three innings shy of the club record set in 1972. Texas had scored once in 48 innings before that run. Texas' scoreless streak was the most since going 25 innings without a run Sept. 1-4, 2004.

                          MOVE OVER CECIL

Prince Fielder's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning gave him 127 RBIs to set the Brewers' record for a single season, passing current Astros manager Cecil Cooper, who set the mark for Milwaukee with 126 in 1983. Fielder is now tied with St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols for the National League RBI lead.

                          PASSING GREEN

Oakland's Mark Ellis homered to break the franchise record for second baseman set by Dick Green. Ellis' shot in the second inning off Indians starter Jeremy Sowers was the 79th of his career and the 77th he's hit while playing second base for the A's. That's one more than Green, who played for the team from 1968-74.

                          WELCOME BACK

Jake Peavy made his first start in over three months and pitched five solid innings to earn a win over Kansas City. Peavy hadn't pitched in a major league game since June 8, when he beat the Diamondbacks while with the Padres. Five days later, he went on the disabled list with a strained tendon in his right ankle.

                          SPEAKING

"Once you get out there, it's like riding a bike. It comes back to you,'' - White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy, who made his first start in over three months and earned a win in a 13-3 rout of Kansas City.
