    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The No. 1 Gators take on the Volunteers, the Longhorns face the Red Raiders, and the Angels continue their series in Texas.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Top-ranked Florida will be looking to pound visiting Tennessee on Saturday afternoon to highlight the day's college football action. Tim Tebow and company won a laugher against Troy last week, with the QB tossing four touchdown strikes in the 56-6 home win. The Vols, meanwhile, lost 19-15 to UCLA last time out, with QB Jonathan Crompton getting picked off three times. The oddsmakers have Florida pegged as a 30-point favorite, with the matchup's total at 53 points.

There's also one ranked matchup on the slate for Saturday, with No. 19 Nebraska at No. 13 Virginia Tech. The Cornhuskers ran their season record to 2-0 last time out with an easy 38-9 win over Arkansas State. The Hokies squared off their record at 1-1 by thumping Marshall 52-10 last week. Oddsmakers have Virginia Tech as a 5-point favorite for Saturday, with the total set at 49.5 points.

No. 2 Texas (-17.5) hosts Texas Tech on Saturday, while No. 3 Southern Cal (-19.5) is at Washington. As well, it'll be North Texas at No. 4 Alabama (-39.5), Temple at No. 5 Penn State (-30), SE Louisiana at No. 5 Mississippi (no line), Florida State at No. 7 BYU (-8), No. 8 California (-13.5) at Minnesota, and Louisiana-Lafayette at No. 9 LSU (-26.5). As well, No. 11 Ohio State will try to get back on the winning track at Toledo; they're 20.5-point favorites in the game.

There's also a single Canadian Football League matchup on Saturday, with Toronto at British Columbia. The Lions are 7.5-point home faves for that contest.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Jered Weaver (15-6, 3.85 ERA) will take on Scott Feldman (16-5, 3.65 ERA) on Saturday night as the Angels continue their series in Texas. Righthander Weaver is coming off a loss to the Yankees (five runs over 7 1-3 innings), but he did manage to beat the Rangers back on August 8. Righthander Feldman was beaten by the Athletics last time out, surrendering six runs over his 6 1-3 innings of work. Feldman picked up a victory versus Los Angeles in his start of August 7.

Also on the American League slate for Saturday: Cleveland at Oakland, Detroit at Minnesota, Kansas City at the White Sox, Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, and the Yankees at Seattle. CC Sabathia (17-7, 3.42 ERA) will get the start for New York, while the M's will turn to Doug Fister (2-2, 3.53 ERA) in that game.

Over in the National League on Saturday it's Brad Penny (3-0, 1.64 ERA in the NL) vs. Jon Garland (10-11, 4.19 ERA) in the Giants/Dodgers matchup, and Ryan Dempster (10-8, 3.84 ERA) vs. Chris Carpenter (16-4, 2.45 ERA) in the Cubs/Cardinals contest. Rounding out the day: San Diego at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, Houston at Milwaukee, Florida at Cincinnati, Colorado at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Atlanta, with Pedro Martinez (5-0, 2.87 ERA) on tap for the Phillies. Javier Vazquez (13-9, 3.01) will take the mound for Atlanta.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA playoffs continue on Saturday, with Washington at Indiana and San Antonio at Phoenix. The Fever beat the Mystics 88-79 in the opening game of that first-round series on Thursday night, with Tamika Catchings pouring in a game-high 26 points for Indiana. Meanwhile, the Silver Stars beat the Mercury 92-91 in the first game of their best-of-three set on Thursday night. Sophia Young led the way with 24 points for San Antonio in that opening victory.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, September 19

      Brave new world

Who has the best starting pitching in the majors? Right now, it’s Atlanta. The Braves are 8-2 in their past 10 games thanks to their rotation. During that streak, the starters have amassed 66 innings and allowed only 16 earned runs. Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Javier Vasquez, Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami have allowed Atlanta to stay in the NL Wild Card hunt. Can the Braves keep it up in a weekend set against the Phillies? A 9-6 record this season against the Phils says they can.

      Cunningham big score for Dallas

FC Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham is licking his chops to play at Kansas City Saturday night. Cunningham made the most of an opportunity against the Wizards earlier this season when he started at striker in place of the transferred Kenny Cooper. Cunningham lit up Kansas City for four goals in a 6-0 win. Coming into Saturday’s match, he is riding the high of a two-goal, two-assist performance in a 6-3 win at Los Angeles. FC Dallas (+200) should see more of the same Saturday.

      Secondary issues are primary concern

No Chris Canty on the defensive line is a blow to the Giants when they face Dallas Sunday. But with the unit’s depth, it’s not nearly as concerning as the team’s secondary. Both said starting safety Kenny Phillips (knee) and cornerback Kevin Dockery (hamstring) missed Friday's practice, with their status uncertain. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns last week, and had 244 yards and two scores in his only game against the G-Men last year. A healthy Dallas (-3) is a healthy choice.

      Home, Sweet, Canada

Aleksandra Wozniak might petition to have a new Grand Slam in Canada. The tournament’s No. 3 seed hails from Blainville, Que., and cruised into the quarterfinals of the Bell Challenge in Quebec with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Regina Kulikova. Wozniak (-500) is a heavy favorite against Alla Kudryavtseva, but is a very intriguing play at -5 (-125) against the Russian, who has failed to make it past the second round of a tournament this calendar year. Look for Wozniak to cover with the crowd on her side.

      Silver Stars good as gold

The Phoenix Mercury looked poised to cruise to the WNBA Finals. Then, they drew the Silver Stars in the opening round. San Antonio is a stunning 6-2 ATS in its past eight meetings with the Mercury, including Thursday night’s 92-91 win in Texas. The key for San Antonio is three-point field goal defense, as Phoenix, shot a meager 27.8 percent from beyond the arc in the loss. San Antonio (+7.5) has a chance to close out the series, and even if it doesn't, the score should still be close enough.

        Six-pack for Saturday

Some trends for this week in college football............

-- Kansas covered 16 of last 22 games as a home favorite.

-- Georgia is 30-5 SU on the road under Richt.

-- Michigan State won its last six visits to Notre Dame.

-- Iowa State lost its last 17 road games SU.

-- Kentucky covered just one of last six as a home favorite.

-- South Carolina covered seven of last 10 when laying double digits.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend....

        13) Georgia is playing its third tough game, at an Arkansas team whose only game has been against I-AA Missouri State. Which is better, to be battle tested or have your confidence built up against stiffs?

        12) LY, Cal Bears came east and got ambushed at Maryland; Saturday, the highly touted Bears are in Twin Cities to play Minnesota-- they're frauds if they lose to the Gophers.

        11) How badly is Florida going to beat Tennessee, and how quickly will the Gators get Tebow to the bench and out of harm's way?

        10) Aaron Corp is starting his first college game at Washington against his old offensive coordinator, Steve Sarkisian. USC is loaded, of course, but if Corp plays really well, does he keep job when Barkley is back?

        9) Notre Dame lost last week, in large part because Charlie Weis' clock management was poor; how do his Irish bounce back against a Michigan State squad that won its last six visits to this stadium?

        8) If Colorado doesn't beat Wyoming at home this weekend, candidates can start sending their head coaching resumes to Boulder.

        7) The over/under on smiles by the head coaches in Cleveland-Denver game Sunday is 1.5, and no one is playing the over.

        6) Jake Delhomme has been the media's pinata all week; can he regroup and play well in Atlanta? If not, AJ Feeley will be warming in bullpen.

        5) With community of Jacksonville not selling out Cardinal-Jaguar game Sunday, will that hurt the Jags' chances of winning? Thats the only NFL game in first two weeks that didn't sell out. It won't be the last.

        4) With two biggest defensive names (Polamalu/Urlacher) both out with injuries, will Steeler-Bear game turn into a shootout?

        3) Kevin Kolb (backup QB), Sean McDermott (defensive coordinator) are the two Eagles most under the gun when the Saints come calling this week. For Kolb, its a one-game audition for the rest of the league, and for McDermott, its a chance to get out of the late Jim Johnson's shadow.

        2) Monday night, there will be 100,000 people in the JerryDome; funny that the Giants are playing the first game there, since late Giants' owner Wellington Mara helped make the league what it is 50 years ago when he agreed to revenue sharing. The JerryDome is the reason that there won't be any more revenue sharing as we know it two years from now.

        1) Will the Jets play as well as they talk? If they do, they might make it to Miami in February.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox (-191, 8.5)

The Royals have pulled the plug on starter Kyle Davies’ scheduled appearance in Chicago Saturday.

Kansas City is skipping Davies in the rotation in place of rookie Dusty Hughes due to an oblique injury. Davies had won four straight outing, allowing just four earned runs in 23 innings of work.

“Nothing out of the ordinary,” Davies told reporters of his injury. “It’s just stuff that happens in a long season.”

Hughes has been with the club since September 5 after getting called up from Triple-A Omaha. He has made four relief appearances, pitching well in all of them save a three-run blunder against the Cleveland Indians last weekend. He was 3-1 with a 2.48 in six Triple-A starts this August.

Adding to the pressure of his first major-league start is the other guy sharing the mound Saturday night. Former Cy Young winner Jake Peavy makes his Chitown debut and his first start since June.

            Pick: Chicago -191

Oakland Athletics at Cleveland Indians (-104, 8.5)

The A’s will not go quietly into the September night.

Oakland has won four straight games and nine of its last 11 contests heading into Friday. The Athletics are getting great work from their starters as well as the bullpen, posting a collective 2.47 ERA in the last week.

Saturday’s starter Gio Gonzalez has been the exception to the rule. He’s gone 1-1 in his last three starts in which he holds an ERA north of 8.00. In his most recent trip to the bump, Gonzalez allowed seven runs in three innings.

"Gio just didn't have command of his pitches," A's manager Bob Geren told the media following that start. "It seems when he missed, he walked guys, and then he'd come in, and it would hit the fat part of the plate."

            Pick: Cleveland

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

              Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds

Arroyo has frequented this list so often in the past three months, we’re fresh out of rock references to go along with his stellar pitching stats.

The Reds' guitar hero (yes!) has been on a roll since late July. Since the All-Star break Arroyo has an ERA of 2.33 and has totaled 52 strikeouts in those 12 games. Unfortunately for the right-hander, a lack of support from his teammates has led to a less-than-stunning 4-4 record in that span.

In his most recent trip to the bump, Arroyo allowed just one run on six hits in seven innings of work – marking his 10th straight quality start.

              Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox

It seems that a Red Sox pitcher is on the streaking side of this article every day.

Lester is perhaps the most notable of Boston’s pitchers, going 5-1 with a 2.41 ERA in 11 starts since the break. The BoSox's left-hander is coming off back-to-back shutout efforts, having kept opponents of the scoreboard for his last 15 innings of work.

He is unbeaten in his last 10 starts, which is the longest active streak in the American League. Lester’s also been a strikeout artist, collecting 80 Ks since the mid-summer classic.

              C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees

Some people were doubting if Sabathia was actually worth the money earlier this season. But in recent appearances, the burly hurler has been worth his weight in gold.

Sabathia has given up just 13 runs over his last 58 1-3 innings on the hill and has pitched into at least the seventh inning in nine straight starts. He has seven victories and an ERA of 2.48 in that stretch. The southpaw has cracked double figures in strikeouts three times in those games and has a K-to-BB count of 83-to-20 since the All-Star Game.

              Slumping

              David Hernandez, Baltimore Orioles

Hernandez can’t wait for the season to get over. The last two months have been trying times for the Orioles’ young righty. Since the break, Hernandez is just 2-6 with a 6.28 ERA in 11 starts. In his last three trips to the mound, things have gone from bad to worse.

Hernandez is posting a 0-2 record and a fat-ass ERA of 13.50 in his last three starts. He hasn’t gone past the fifth inning in any of those starts and has served up nine – count ‘em nine – home runs in just under 11 innings of terrible pitching.

              Debuting

              Jake Peavy, Chicago White Sox

Southsiders finally get to see what Jake Peavy looks like in black and white when the former Cy Young winner makes his debut for the ChiSox.

Peavy has been nursing a tender ankle and was limited in workouts since joining Chicago via a trade-deadline deal. He hasn’t pitched since June and brings a 6-6 record and 3.97 ERA with him from 13 starts as a Padre this season.

"I don't expect to be 100 per cent," Peavy told reporters. "I'm not. I'm excited about getting out there and competing."
