San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers [10:10 PM ET]

Giants: The Giants open this crucial series against the Dodgers pitching southpaw Jonathan Sanchez (6-12, 4.16 ERA). Sanchez often has control problems, but he can be tough to hit. Sanchez has limited foes to five hits or less in 11 of his last 12 outings, beginning when he threw a no-hitter against San Diego on July 10. San Francisco is just 10-27 during Sanchez’s past 37 starts, however. Sanchez has struggled against Los Angeles. He’s 0-4 this season with a 5.68 ERA versus the Dodgers, including going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA at Dodger Stadium. Sanchez is 2-9 on the road with a 4.31 ERA compared to 4-3 with a 3.98 ERA at AT&T Park. San Francisco has lost 17 of the past 21 times Sanchez has started on the road. Shortstop Edgar Renteria returned to the Giants’ lineup on Wednesday after missing three games with a sore shoulder.

San Francisco is 7-2 in its last nine games during the first game of a series.
The Under is 6-1-1 in the Giants’ past eight games when facing a right-handed starter.

    Key Injuries - None

    PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Dodgers (-$1.50, O/U 8 over -$1.20): Vicente Padilla has been tremendous for the Dodgers going 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA since being signed for the minimum wage after the Rangers released him. It’s the second time in six days Padilla is facing the Giants and Jonathan Sanchez. Padilla held San Francisco to one run on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings during a 9-1 win at AT&T Park last Saturday. The right-hander kept the Giants off balance mixing a 95 mph fastball with a slow curve. The Dodgers are 25-12 in their last 37 home games versus a left-handed starter. Russell Martin is six-for-13 with six RBIs in his career against Sanchez. Los Angeles is 4-2 against the Giants this season at Dodger Stadium and 9-6 overall. The Dodgers have won 40 of their past 59 games against National League West competition. The Dodgers are 10-2-2 under in their past 14 home contests.

The Under is 17-6-3 in the Dodgers’ last 26 games.

Key Injuries - Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is day-to-day

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)

Calgary Stampeders at Hamilton Tiger Cats

The Stampeders have playing quite well over the last few weeks. Jeremaine Copeland was just chosen offensive player of the week while Jim Davis took the honor for his work on the defensive side of the ball with Calgary. DeAndra’ Cobb has been a nice surprise for the Tiger Cats but the Stampeders, with the acquisitions of MLB Tim Johnson and of DL Jim Davis, are more efficient against the running game. In the last two games against the Eskimos, the Stampeders have limited RB Arkee Whitlock to an average of nearly sixty yards per game. If a running back is to star this coming Friday, it will probably be Joffrey Reynolds of the Stamps. The Tiger Cats have lost only one of five home games this season but that becomes irrelevant when the Stampeders are in town. Hamilton did improve greatly since last season but the Tiger Cats still don’t have the tools or the depth to beat the defending champs.

      Pick: Calgary -3.5

      Saturday, September 19

      Toronto Argonauts at B.C. Lions

When these two teams met in Week 7, the Lions came back from a 25-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to win it 36-28. Their QB Jarious Jackson had three touchdown passes. But the Lions can also run the ball. Although he was held to 66 yards rushing in Montreal last week, running back Martell Mallet had a team-record 213 yards the previous week against those same Alouettes. The Argos are more limited offensively and B.C. basically needs to slow down RB Jamal Robertson to disarm a Toronto team that has one of the less intimidating air attacks in the league. The stakes are also high for the Lions, who can stay in the race for a crossover playoff spot with a win.

      Pick: B.C. -7.5

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes

The Blue Bombers are coming to Montreal to challenge the best team in the CFL after suffering a humiliating beating at home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders by the score of 55-10. About 10 Facebook sites appeared asking for the firing of head coach Mike Kelly. The last time the Alouettes faced the Bombers, in Winnipeg, Anthony Calvillo had a blast with four touchdown passes. Since the start of the season, the Bombers tallied only five touchdown passes. It is not surprising to hear that newcomer Casey Bramlet might get some play calling action if Michael Bishop proves erratic against the Alouettes. The biggest risk the Alouettes run in this game is taking the Bombers lightly. But if Marc Trestman’s team puts in the effort, the Blue Bombers will leave Montreal with another loss and the Winnipeg fans will be even more anxious than ever to see Kelly get the axe.

      Pick: Montreal -14.5

      Edmonton Eskimos at Saskatchewan Roughriders

This will most likely be the most entertaining game this week. The Eskimos just lost two in a row against their archrivals from Alberta and they are now trying to catch the second-place Roughriders, which they would achieve if they triumph in Saskatchewan. The last time Richie Hall and his Eskimos came to Regina, in Week 4, they managed to win a 38-34 nail-biter. The Eskimos can count on one of the three best pivots in the CFL but the Riders have watched QB Darian Durant becoming more consistent each week. Edmonton will gladly welcome back RB Calvin McCarty, whose presence should give more teeth to their offence. But it won’t be enough. Although Saskatchewan has been up and down this season, the Roughriders are always a tough team to beat at Mosaic Field.

      Pick: Saskatchewan -4

          Len’s Top Five

          Friday, September 18

          Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for September 18, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

          1. Quick Hits

          * Double dribble. The lead negotiator for the NBA refs says a lockout of referees is unavoidable. The NBA pres-season begins in 2 weeks.

          * Roger Federer was fined $15-hundred for cursing at the chair umpire during the U.S. Open final.

          * The Cowboys will debut their new stadium Sunday night against the Giants. Since their $40-million dollar TV screens were hung too low over the field, there's a chance "do-overs" will be called if they interfere with punts.

          2. The Way of the World

How crazy has it become for celebs? A front page New York Times story yesterday talked about Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow. He was approached by a woman at Radio Shack to take a picture. But the instant before her mother snapped the pic, the woman tried to take off her shirt. Give me a break. Is everyone looking for their Michael Phelps gotcha moment? Do athletes have to live like monks in today's society? Kinda sucks.

          3. Nailed

Another sign of the times. I feel a twinge of sadness that Lenny Dykstra is putting his 1986 Mets World Series ring on the auction block. Of course he's the one who plunged head first into his financial mess. Mets fans still feel a special glow about that magical World Series win. In today's sports world everything is up for sale. Even memories.

          4. Friday Mailbag

Serena Williams drew much comment. Said M.L. "While I don't condone what Serena did, I'm also VERY sick of the "I'm sorry" society we've created... I'm sorry I did steroids, I'm sorry I staged dogfights, I'm sorry I shot myself in the leg.... I'm actually glad Serena didn't say I'm sorry."
And D.P. wrote: "You'd think Ms. Williams could've at least learned the NAME of the line judge while issuing her various half-hearted apologies?"

Despite his accomplishments and how he's handled the spotlight, not everyone is a Derek Jeter fan. D.S writes: "I have long been annoyed by the absolute love affair the New York and national news media has with him - a love affair that has inflated the perception of how good a player Jeter is.... if he played his entire career in a place like Kansas City or Milwaukee, he would barely register on anyone's radar screen."

The vote was about 50-50 on my proposal that the games should have been canceled back in 2001 after 9/11 and not merely postponed like rainouts. B.G. had a good compromise: "I think those games should've been made up, with all profits donated to the victims and their families."

With runner Caster Semenya reportedly having male and female organs, R.R. writes: "She's already taking up new sports. in fact, she won a mixed tennis tournament last week -- by herself."
And E.M. asks "can she now participate in biathlons?"
Editor's note: Depends on his/her skiing and shooting skills.

          5. Fans of the Week

I know you are more used to cynicism than corniness in the Top 5, but my fans of the week are Steve Monforto and his 3-year old daughter Emily. Steve is the Phillies fan who caught a foul ball, gave it to Emily, who threw it back onto the field. Steve then gave her a big hug as the world went "aww." They've since been given autographed baseballs and jerseys. After a week of crappy behavior in tennis and music, we needed a feel good story to end the week. Thanks Steve and Emily.

Happy Birthday: Cyclist Lance Armstrong. 38.
Bonus Birthday: Former teen idol Frankie Avalon. 70.

Today in Sports: Joe Louis knocks out Tami Mauriello in the first round at Yankee Stadium to retain his heavyweight title. 1946.
Bonus Event: A horse raced a locomotive in a 9 mile race in Baltimore, and the horse won! 1830.
