    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, September 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Boise State meets Fresno State on the gridiron, the Rangers host the Angels, and the Giants take on the rival Dodgers.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football matchup on Friday night has Fresno State hosting No. 10 Boise State. The ranked Broncos got past Oregon 19-8 in their season opener, then blasted Miami-Ohio 48-0 last week. The Bulldogs beat up on California-Davis 51-0 in their first game of the season, but they fell 34-31 at Wisconsin last time out. The oddsmakers like Boise State on the road on Friday, as they're listed as 7.5-point favorites. The total for the matchup sits at 54 points.

There's also a Canadian Football League contest on tap for Friday, with Calgary at Hamilton. The Stampeders head into the game tied for first place in the West at 6-4 straight-up (but just 3-7 against-the-spread). The Tiger-Cats, meanwhile, are second in the East at 5-5 SU and 7-3 ATS. The oddsmakers have the Stamps pegged as 4-point road favorites for Friday, with the total at 53.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Angels begin a road series in Texas against the Rangers on Friday night, with Scott Kazmir (8-8, 5.32 ERA) taking on Tommy Hunter (8-3, 3.23 ERA). Lefthander Kazmir has found his form of late, surrendering just five earned runs over his past four starts (25 1-3 innings). However, Kazmir didn't get the win in any of those outings. Righthander Hunter is coming off a strong outing against the Mariners in which he gave up two runs (one earned) in a complete-game win.

Also on the American League schedule for Friday: Boston at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Detroit at Minnesota, Kansas City at the White Sox, Cleveland at Oakland, and the Yankees at Seattle. A.J. Burnett (11-9, 4.33 ERA) will get the ball for New York in that matchup; righthander Burnett gave up six runs in seven innings in a loss to the Orioles last time out. Felix Hernandez (15-5, 2.52 ERA) is slated to start for Seattle; the righthander beat the Rangers in his last mound trip.

Over in the National League the Giants and Dodgers meet in Los Angeles on Friday night, with Jonathan Sanchez (6-12, 4.16 ERA) taking on Vicente Padilla (3-0, 2.01 ERA in the NL). The Giants have been tagged with the loss in each of Sanchez's last three starts, but the lefthander allowed just six earned runs over those 16 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Padilla beat San Francisco in his most recent outing, holding them to a single unearned run on three hits in six innings.

Rounding out the Senior Circuit's slate for Friday: San Diego at Pittsburgh, Washington at the Mets, Florida at Cincinnati, Houston at Milwaukee, the Cubs at St. Louis, Colorado at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Atlanta. The Braves will go with Tim Hudson (1-0, 3.63 ERA) in that last matchup; righthander Hudson gave up four earned runs over five innings vs. the Cards last time out. The Phillies counter with J.A. Happ (10-4, 2.77 ERA), barring a setback with his sore oblique.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA playoffs continue on Friday night, with Detroit at Atlanta and Los Angeles at Seattle. The Shock took a 1-0 lead in their first-round series against the Dream with a 94-89 home win on Wednesday night. Deanna Nolan led the way with 25 points for Detroit in that victory, while Iziane Castro Marques tossed in 25 points for Atlanta. The Storm and Sparks also got their series underway on Wednesday night, with Los Angeles pulling out a 70-63 home win.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Friday, September 18

      OH-HI-Woe

It just keeps getting worse for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After choking away a late-lead against USC, the Buckeyes found out their three-year starter at right tackle, Jim Cordle, will miss at least three weeks with an ankle injury. The team must now plug in a backup or retool its offensive line. The Buckeyes figure to have plenty of talent to outmuscle Toledo (+20.5) on Saturday in Cleveland, but the Rockets, who are averaging more than 42 points per game, are becoming a more and more enticing play.

      How ‘bout a Revolution?

The New England Revolution (+125) must be licking their chops about a trip to play the New York Red Bulls. The Revolution are fighting desperately for a playoff berth and will look to get the full three-points against a team they have gone 5-0-5 against since 2006. Even better for New England, the Red Bulls could be without leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel (nine goals), who is nursing an ankle injury and missed the team’s last game. No Angel, means hell for New York.

      Bullpen banter

Santiago Casilla. Michael Wuretz. Brad Ziegler. Craig Breslow. Andrew Bailey. Sounds like a beer league softball team right? How about the hottest bullpen on the hottest team in the Majors. The Oakland Athletics are an MLB-best 8-2 their past 10 games and can thank these hurlers for it. During that stretch, the pen has pitched 38 2-3 innings and allowed a meager seven earned runs. Oakland might be out of the playoffs, but they will be a tough out the rest of the season.

Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?

Atlanta might want to re-think its home court advantage. The Sky dropped the opening game of their best-of-three series against the Shock in Detroit, and now must play Game 2 on Friday night at Gwinnett Arena in Duluth, Ga., because Phillips Arena already had booked Sesame Street. The defending champion Shock (+6) won nine of their final 11 games to make the postseason, and won’t be intimidated by Oscar, Elmo or Snuffy.

      These guys are still good

No PGA this weekend? No problem. Look close, and there is a very solid play on the Champions Tour this weekend at the Greater Hickory Classic. Normally, we wouldn’t say that about a golfer who has just one top 10 finish this season, but R.W.Eaks is a special cat. Eaks is the two-time defending champion on the course, nearly set a record-low last year, and says his knees feel the best they have all season. Listed at +2500, Eaks is such a good value, he makes you want to scream.

        Six-pack for Friday

Some trends for Week 2 in the NFL........

-- Titans covered five of their last six games against Houston.

-- Ravens covered five of their last seven as a road underdog.

-- Chiefs are 4-11-1 vs spread in their last sixteen home games.

-- Seahawks covered nine of their last twelve divisional games.

-- Bucs covered six of last 25 non-divisional road games.

-- Bengals covered their last five non-divisional road games.

Friday's List of 13: Random stuff as your writer battles the flu....

Its been a long couple days battling the flu, but we're heading towards the weekend, so with that in mind, we've got some quick thoughts.......

        13) It must be fun to live in a big league city like Atlanta, where if game starts late because of rain, like the Braves have the last two nights, you could go out to the park and basically have your pick of great seats. Of course from the look of it, not many Georgians agree with me.......

        12) Remind me again why the Indians traded Victor Martinez.......

        11) Why does every college football coach other than Pete Carroll look like they're sitting in the dentist's chair, and they're all out of novocaine?

        10) Al Davis is 80 years old; there are Raider fans who are upset because his mom lived to be 102, and they're afraid longevity is in his genes.

        9) So Kendra Wilkinson's reality show takes an odd turn because Eagles had to activate Michael Vick, which means boyfriend Hank Baskett got released, then relocated to Indianapolis. Hopes she likes Steak 'n Shake.

        8) What is the over/under on technical fouls for Rasheed Wallace if the NBA season starts with replacement referees?

        7) My A's are stuck in last place, but they're hitting 33 points higher after All-Star break than they did before it. Rajai Davis has 27 stolen bases in his last 59 games, and is hitting .347 in second half of season.

        6) Thursday's Cleveland-Oakland starting pitchers featured young guys the teams acquired when they traded big stars-- Cleveland traded Victor Martinez to Boston for Masterson, A's traded Matt Holliday to Cards and one of the three players they got back was Mortensen.

        5) Jacory Harris, the Miami Hurricanes' QB has improved a lot and is a darned good prospect as a sophomore. Gotta hope he stays at Miami all four seasons-- just think that helps a quarterback develop better.

        4) They're playing preseason hockey games already. Season starts in a couple weeks-- with winter Olympics this year, there will be a 2-week All-Star break in the season. Olympics are in Vancouver, by the way.

        3) I'm convinced that major league umps are schooled that on close plays on the bases, they're to call the runner out. Just get that feeling......in the games I watch on TV, majority of bang/bang plays are called out.

        2) On June 23, 1971, a pitcher named Rick Wise threw a no-hitter and hit two home runs, undoubtedly the greatest game for any pitcher ever. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they traded Steve Carlton to get him.

        1) Interesting college game Friday, with Boise Broncos going to Fresno for a WAC battle with the Bulldogs. Fresno lost in OT at Wisconsin in their last game- they're out to avenge a 61-10 drubbing in Boise LY.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays (-170, 9)

Things are starting to boil over for the once-contending Rays. Tempers fared Wednesday afternoon in the team clubhouse when left fielder Carl Crawford started yelling at teammate Pat Burrell.

James Shields got in between the two players and manager Joe Maddon met with both players.

“It was nothing,” Joe Maddon said told the Tampa Tribune. “Honestly – I talked to both parties everything’s good.”

Sorry Joe, but we’re going to have to call BS on that one.

The Ray have dropped 13 of their last 14 and crushed any hope of the postseason in the process.

              Pick: Jays

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks (+130, 10)

The Rockies got a much-needed win Wednesday night and the club got some good news in the afternoon about the health of closer Houston Street.

The righty reliever, who hasn’t pitched since Sept. 1 because of a biceps tendon strain, was impressive in a bullpen session and could be back for game action as soon as Sunday.

“It was a very good day for me,” Street told MLB.com following his workout. “I’m feeling so good that maybe after I throw on Friday they can try to find an inning for me Sunday, and if not Sunday then maybe sometime shortly after that.”

Street has been money in back for Colorado backers this season. The former Oakland Athletic is 33 for 34 in save opportunities this season.

Look for the feel-good wave to continue for the Rockies Friday night against Arizona.

              Pick: Rockies

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox

The young righty is a big part of the BoSox postseason push. In his last four trips to the mound, Buchholz has allowed just five earned runs in over 28 innings of work.

In his most recent start, Buchholz shut down the Tampa Bay Rays for just one run on five hits. He also struck out five batters, bringing his K count to 22 during this current streak.

Buchholz is likely to earn himself a spot in the playoff rotation after watching the postseason from the sidelines last year. The team hasn’t set any pitch count for its budding ace like it did in 2008.

“I don’t think there’s any caution flags that have been thrown out right now,” Buchholz told the Boston Globe. “They haven’t mentioned anything to me about it. I think if that’s the case, if I was getting close, I think they would take me out in the fifth or sixth inning. I feel strong. I think we’re going more on how my body feels than anything.”

                Scott Kazmir, Los Angeles Angels

Life on the West Coast has been good to Scott Kazmir.

Since moving from Florida to Los Angeles, the left-hander has posted a 1.86 ERA in his first three starts for the Angels. However, those performances have earned Kazmir an unimpressive 0-1 record in that span.

The Halos power outage at the plate has prevented Kazmir from getting the win, averaging just over one run per game in those starts. In his most recent trip to the bump, Kazmir gave up just two runs in six innings while the offense scored just enough to get the 3-2 victory.

                Tim Stauffer, San Diego Padres

San Diego is showing some fight in September and Stauffer is the team’s hardest punch.

The righty is 3-0 in his last four starts, allowing just six runs in that span. He has given up only one earned run in his last three, posting a 1.40 ERA in just over 19 innings pitched.

In his most recent appearance, Stauffer went six innings, striking out three batters but walked four. Known more for his breaking balls, he relied on his fastball and changeup versus the Rockies. That wide array of pitches has kept batters guessing in the second half of the season.

"It was a solid outing. What I like was that he made pitches when he needed to," manager Bud Black told MLB.com. "The four walks were unlike him. I really like the use of the changeup. I thought that was his best pitch."

                Slumping

                Scott Richmond, Toronto Blue Jays

The Jays young right-hander is caught in pitching hell right now.

In his last four outings, Richmond has been pounded for a total of 23 runs in just over 20 innings of so-called work. His latest nightmare was a six-run, three-home run waxing in 4 1-3 innings versus the Detroit Tigers. Somehow, Toronto overcame that and scored eight runs to give Richmond the no-decision. He hasn’t posted a win since June 24 and has an ERA north of 8.00 since the break.

When asked to sum up his troubles, which were manifested in four walks, Richmond simply stated, “Plain and simple, it's lack of fastball command".

                Luke Hochevar, Kansas City Royals

Hochevar’s recent troubles could be due to the fact the Royals righty is tipping his pitches.

“You feel like you’re pitching your game, making pitches, and getting killed,” he told the Kansas City Star. “It’s nice, because I felt like we went through every scenario, like, ‘I’m not mixing enough, maybe I need to pitch backward more. Maybe my location’s not good enough.’

“It’s human nature, you start questioning your stuff, ‘Is my stuff good enough?’ I even thought about canning my curveball.”

Hochevar has been bashed for 18 runs in his last three games, spawning a grotesque 11.57 ERA in just 14 innings. Against the Cleveland Indians last weekend, he allowed five runs on seven hits but struck out six batters.

The trouble is coming in bunches for the youngster. He is susceptible to big innings in recent starts, posting some three, four and five runs innings during this current funk.

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Friday, September 18

San Francisco at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 p.m. EDT). Vicente Padilla (11-6, 4.42 ERA) and the NL West-leading Dodgers host the contending Giants in the opener of a weekend series. Jonathan Sanchez (6-12, 4.16) is scheduled to get the ball for San Francisco.

                    STARS

                    Thursday

-Howie Kendrick, Angels, homered and added an RBI blooper to break a ninth-inning tie, in a 4-3 win at Boston.

-Wade Davis, Rays, threw a four-hitter to earn his first major league win and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore 3-0.

-Ichiro Suzuki, Mariners, hit a game-ending single to center in the bottom of the 14th inning, leading Seattle to a 4-3 win over the White Sox.

-Cole Hamels, Phillies, struck out 10 in eight sharp innings to lead Philadelphia to a 4-2 victory over Washington.

-Brian McCann, Braves, hit a tiebreaking three-run homer and finished with four RBIs in Atlanta's 7-3 win against the New York Mets.

-Jody Gerut, Brewers, hit his second career grand slam to power Milwaukee to a 7-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

-Matt Maloney, Reds, pitched five innings to earn his first major league win, helping Cincinnati beat the Florida 3-2.

                    GETTING THAT LOOK AGAIN

Cole Hamels appears to be rounding into form for the NL East-leading Phillies. Hamels pitched eight innings in Philadelphia's 4-2 win over Washington on Thursday night and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts. Hamels, the MVP of last season's NL championship series and World Series, is 3-1 with a 1.43 ERA in his last five starts.

                    COSTLY LOSS

Florida lost 3-2 at Cincinnati, extending its skid at Great American Ball Park to nine straight and wasting a chance to gain ground in the NL wild-card race. The Marlins dropped five games behind Colorado and 1 1/2 games behind San Francisco, who were both off. Atlanta, which beat the New York Mets 7-3 moved a half-game ahead of Florida.

                    WORTH NOTING

The Braves have won seven straight games for the first time since 2006. They beat the reeling Mets 7-3 on Thursday night to move 10 games over .500 for the first time since May 16, 2007. ... The Reds sold only 9,685 tickets for their 3-2 victory over Florida, the second-smallest gate in Great American Ball Park's seven-year history. The smallest was 9,087 for the second game of a day-night doubleheader against Pittsburgh on Aug. 31.

                    LOOKING CY WORTHY

Zack Greinke boosted his Cy Young credentials, lowering his major league-leading ERA to 2.14 with five scoreless innings in the Royals' 9-2 victory over Detroit. Greinke (14-8) allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked two. He has allowed only one earned run in his past four starts, lowering his ERA from 2.43.

                    EARLY END

Oakland right-hander Brett Tomko has been sidelined for the rest of the season with nerve damage in his right arm. Tomko told team doctors he felt something in his arm during his five-hit shutout against the Rangers in Texas on Monday. He threw 114 pitches and could not move his arm the next morning.

                    NOW PLAY BALL

Right-hander Tanner Scheppers, the Texas Rangers' supplemental first-round pick in the amateur draft, agreed to a minor league contract with a $1.25 million signing bonus. This year was the third time Scheppers has been drafted. ... The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year major league contract with first-round draft pick Aaron Crow. Crow, selected 12th, a hard-throwing right-hander, is guaranteed $3 million even if he doesn't reach the majors under the deal that begins next season. He would earn about $4.5 million if he makes it to the big leagues.

                    SPEAKING

"Go on and ask (the players). I don't have any more quotes. Seriously, what am I going to say?'' - The usually loquacious White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after his team blew two-run ninth inning lead and lost to the Mariners 4-3 in 14 innings.

                    SEASONS

                    Sept. 18

1908 - Bob Rhoads of the Indians pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox for a 2-1 victory in Cleveland.

1930 - New York pitcher Red Ruffing hit two home runs as the Yankees edged the St. Louis Browns 7-6 in 10 innings.

1954 - The Cleveland Indians clinched the American League pennant with a 3-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers.

1963 - The New York Mets lost their last game at the Polo Grounds to the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in front of a crowd of only 1,752.

1968 - Ray Washburn threw a 2-0 no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, one day after the Giants' Gaylord Perry tossed a no-hitter against Washburn's St. Louis Cardinals.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers clinched the American League East Division with a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, making the Tigers the fourth team in major league history to lead from start to finish. The other three teams were the 1923 New York Giants, 1927 New York Yankees and the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers.

1987 - Detroit's Darrell Evans became the first 40-year-old player in major league history to hit 30 home runs in a season as the Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6.

1996 - Roger Clemens equaled his own major league record, fanning 20 batters and pitching a four-hitter to lead Boston over the Detroit Tigers 4-0.

2003 - Atlanta clinched its 12th straight division title when second-place Florida was mathematically eliminated from the NL East race after a 5-4 loss to Philadelphia. The record title streak started in 1991, when the Braves won the NL West. They moved to the East Division in 1994 and trailed Montreal by six games when the strike stopped the season in August.

2005 - The Texas Rangers set a major league record for home runs at home when David Dellucci, Alfonso Soriano and Rod Barajas connected against Seattle in an 8-6 victory. This Day in Baseball

On September 18 in Baseball History...

1908 - Bob Rhoads of the Indians pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox for a 2-1 victory in Cleveland.

1909 - Ty Cobb wins the Triple Crown with a .377 batting average, nine home runs and 107 RBI. He also leads the American League with 216 hits, 116 runs and 296 total bases.

1922 - George Sisler's 41-game hit streak is stopped by New York's Joe Bush, the same pitcher the St. Louis Browns first baseman had started the streak against on July 27. Whitey Witt, his head bandaged from being hit by a bottle, drives in two in the ninth for a 3-2 Yankees' win.

1930 - New York pitcher Red Ruffing hit two home runs as the Yankees edged the St. Louis Browns 7-6 in 10 innings.

1954 - The Cleveland Indians clinched the American League pennant with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1956 - Mickey Mantle hits his 50th home run, making him the eighth player to do so, in the eleventh inning off Chicago's Billy Pierce. New York wins 3-2 to clinch another pennant. Mickey Mantle will win the Triple Crown with a .353 batting average, 52 home runs and 130 RBI.

1963 - The New York Mets lost their last game at the Polo Grounds to the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, in front of only 1,752.

1965 - On Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium, 50,180 fans see Mantle play his 2,000th game.

1968 - Ray Washburn pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, one day after the Giants' Gaylord Perry tossed a no-hitter against Washburn's St. Louis Cardinals.

1984 - The Detroit Tigers clinched the American League East Division with a 3-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, making the Tigers only the fourth team in Major League history to lead from start to finish. 1987 - Detroit's Darrell Evans became the first 40-year-old player in Major League history to hit 30 home runs in a season as the Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-6.

1993 - The Yankees trail the Red Sox 3-1 in the ninth inning when Mike Stanley hits a popup to left field. Just before the pitch, a fan runs onto the field and umpire Tim Welke calls timeout, so the last out doesn't count. The Yankees rally for three runs and the Red Sox lose the game as well as the protest filed by the team.

1996 - Roger Clemens equaled his own Major League record, striking out 20 batters and pitching a four-hitter to lead Boston over the Detroit Tigers 4-0.
