    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, September 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Marlins look for a win in St. Louis, the Red Sox take on the Angels, and the WNBA playoffs get underway on two fronts.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Josh Johnson (14-4, 3.06 ERA) and Joel Pineiro (14-10, 3.21 ERA) will both be gunning for their 15th wins of the season on Wednesday afternoon when the Marlins play the Cardinals in St. Louis. Righthander Johnson is coming off back-to-back outings against the Nationals in which he went 1-0 with a no-decision (three runs allowed in 10 innings). Righthander Pineiro was tagged with a loss by the Braves last time out despite allowing just a single run over his seven innings.

Also on the National League schedule for Wednesday: Pittsburgh at the Dodgers, Arizona at San Diego, Washington at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, Milwaukee at the Cubs, and Colorado at San Francisco. Jorge De La Rosa (14-9, 4.37 ERA) gets the start for the Rockies in that Wild Card showdown, while the Giants counter with Matt Cain (13-5, 2.61 ERA). Righthander Cain was defeated by the Dodgers in his most recent outing.

The top matchup on the American League slate for Wednesday has Los Angeles' Joe Saunders (13-7, 4.81 ERA) taking on Boston's Paul Byrd (1-1, 6.08 ERA). Lefthander Saunders has managed to pick up the victory in each of his last four starts, allowing just five runs over those 24 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Byrd took a no-decision against the Orioles last time out, surrendering two runs on six hits over five innings. Byrd had been roughed up by Chicago in his previous start.

Rounding out the AL schedule for Wednesday: Cleveland at Minnesota, Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Kansas City at Detroit, Oakland at Texas, the White Sox at Seattle, and Toronto at the Yankees. The Blue Jays' Brian Tallet (7-9, 5.26 ERA) will take on the Yankees' Chad Gaudin (5-10, 4.81 ERA) in that last matchup. Lefthander Tallet takes a personal two-game winning streak into Wednesday's contest. Righthander Gaudin will be filling in for Andy Pettitte (shoulder fatigue).

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, the WNBA playoffs tip off on Wednesday night, with Atlanta at Detroit and Seattle at Los Angeles. Atlanta, the No. 2 seed in the East, went 18-16 straight-up and 21-10-3 against-the-spread during the regular season, while No. 3 Detroit was 18-16 SU and 15-17-2 ATS. The Shock are 3.5-point home favorites for Wednesday's opener, with the total at 167.5. Out West, No. 2 Seattle was 20-14 SU and 15-18-1 ATS during the regular season, while No. 3 Los Angeles went 18-16 SU and 18-16 ATS. The Sparks are 5-point favorites, with the total at 138.

Bettor's best friend: Today's helpful tips

      Wednesday, September 16

      Dustin the wind

Texas right-hander Dustin Nippert will be making his first start since Sept. 1. In his last eight starts, Nippert has pitched to the under each time. He has just two quality starts in that span but is 2-2 while the Rangers are 4-4. Texas is -175 versus Oakland.

      Holy Toledo

Toledo may look like bully fodder this weekend as a 20-point home underdog to Ohio State, which will be looking for an outlet for the frustration of the loss to USC. But keep these tidbits in mind: The Rockets are 5-6 in their last 11 games against Big Ten schools, with wins over Purdue (twice), Penn State, Minnesota and Michigan. And quarterback Aaron Opelt leads the nation in total offense with 437 yards per game.

      Making sure Andy is dandy

Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte will be skipped in the rotation due to an achy shoulder and the team's postseason aspirations. Pettitte, who is 14-9 with a 3.96 ERA in 35 career playoff starts, will pitch again Monday. He will be replaced in the rotation by Chad Gaudin. The Yankees are -250 versus Toronto.

      Line shifts

Whether Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb or Jeff Garcia plays quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, they won't have Shawn Andrews protecting them. The Pro Bowl right tackle is out for the season with a back injury and will be replaced by Winston Justice. The host Eagles are -1 vs. the New Orleans Saints, who had one sack in its opener but will have defensive ends Will Smith and Charles Grant, who will not be suspended by the NFL "at this time" for banned-substance violations, the league announced.

      Officially speaking

NBA referees, without a contract since Sept. 1 and at an impasse with the league regarding a new deal, will meet in Chicago on Wednesday - 15 days before the first preseason game - to inform members about their uncertain future. The league abruptly ended the last negotiation session and no new talks are scheduled. The refs want a two-year contract in anticipation of an economic recovery while the league wants a traditional five-year deal. Referees were locked out by the NBA in 1995 before reaching an in-season agreement.

      Raising Cain

Giants right-hander Matt Cain will make his fifth start against the Rockies this season. In two previous road starts, he is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. In two home starts, he is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. The Giants are -130 vs. the Rockies.

      Stay in your lanes

Through two weeks, the only FBS school that has allowed two kickoff returns for touchdowns is Alabama, which surrendered one each to Virginia Tech and Florida International. The Crimson Tide is as much as a 38-point favorite this week vs. North Texas.

      Dub mix

If you're looking for a WNBA team to make an unlikely run at the title, try the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks began the season as a 2-1 choice to win the championship and endured the absences of stars Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie before winning 10 of their last 13 games. They have dropped to 7-2 but have a beatable first-round opponent in the Seattle Storm, which has lost four straight first-round series. That includes last year's setback to the Sparks with a healthy Lauren Jackson, whose back has her iffy for the postseason. The WNBA playoffs start Wednesday.

      Notable quotable

"I'm not even going to go there."

-- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, on the status of quarterback Sam Bradford, who suffered a sprained shoulder in the season opener that Stoops said would sideline the Heisman Trophy winner two to four weeks. Oklahoma is favored by 16.5 points over visiting Tulsa on Saturday.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

Here are my top six QBs of all-time-- make your own list before you get all mad and e-mail me........

        6) Dan Marino-- Huge passing numbers, but no championships.

        5) Steve Young-- Was better than Montana, just came along after him.

        4) Peyton Manning-- Father Archie was righty version of Young, but Peyton and Eli are both slow; blame there must go to mom Olivia.

        3) Tom Brady-- Tremendous leader; Belichick better come thru with a big payday for him before he retires- his record is poor without #12.

        2) Roger Staubach-- If he wanted to, think he could have been elected President, thats how well-respected he is. Great in 2:00 drill.

        1) John Elway-- Funny thing, he never played in a bowl game; his last college game was the Stanford band play, which cost him a bowl shot. Broncos have one won playoff game since he retired.

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Raiders really beat up on the Chargers physically Monday nite, but couldn't finish the deal; Russell's lack of accuracy on mid-range passes (he was 12-30/208, with a big TD and two INTs) hurts them. When he went out briefly with injury, Raiders let backup Gradkowski throw on first two plays- he looked steadier than Russell.

        12) Falcons had a 25-yard edge in field position against Miami; five of their ten drives started in Dolphin territory. Easier to play that way.

        11) Biggest NFL upset in Week 1 was Denver winning as 5-point dog in Cincinnati; 49ers closed at +4.5 in Arizona. As for the colleges, biggest upset winner was Houston (+16.5) at Oklahoma State, with Chippewas of Central Michigan (+15) next. Florida State was -34 vs Jacksonville State and trailed in last minute, before scoring twice for dicey 19-9 win.

        10) Think the Crimson Tide is practicing kick coverage this week? Not only did Virginia Tech run one back for a score in opener vs Alabama, but FIU did last week, too. Going to be starters covering kicks soon.

        9) USC QB Matt Barkley's dad was All-American water polo player in his college days, also at USC. Young Barkley was very poised Saturday.

        8) When was last time Tennessee Vols were a 29-point underdog?

        7) Memo to guys who announce football on TV-- ALL COACHES HATE TURNOVERS, EVERY ONE OF THEM!!! Every week, you hear a guy say, "Coach A just hates turnovers." No freakin' kidding.... when you find a coach who doesn't, then you'll have some news.

        6) Panthers/Saints were only NFL teams to score TD on their first drive of the season; five teams turned ball over on their first drive, including the Rams, who fumbled the opening kickoff in Seattle. Seven teams tried field goals on their first drive; only four of seven made the kick.

        5) Seven teams scored TDs on their first drive of second half; six teams turned ball over, with one field goal made.

        4) Magglio Ordonez hit his incentive (1,080 PA over two years) will be paid $18M next season. Good thing the Tigers are headed to playoffs, they can rake in some of that money they'll be paying him next month.

        3) Roy Halladay is now 16-4, 2.84 in 35 career starts against Bronx after he beat the Bombers 10-4 in a brawl-marred tilt. Jorge Posada got into it with Toronto reliever Carlson after a series of brushbacks both ways.

        2) Major league baseball made a much bigger deal than usual of the 2010 schedule being released, as they try to push '10 season tickets. How do people who sell season ticket plans in Pittsburgh or Kansas City do it?

        1) When are the Patriots going to pay Tom Brady what he's worth? No way any Patriot player would begrudge him one penny, he's that great. Without Brady, Belichick is a defensive coordinator or a college coach.

            SCOREBOARD

            Wednesday, September 16

Colorado at San Francisco (10:15 p.m. EDT). Jorge De La Rosa (14-9, 4.37 ERA) pitches for the Rockies against All-Star Matt Cain (13-5, 2.61) in the finale of a three-game series with major playoff implications. Cain and the Giants are trying to catch their NL West rivals in the wild-card race.

            STARS

            Tuesday

-Andre Ethier, Dodgers, hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning - his major league-leading sixth walkoff hit of the season - giving Los Angeles a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh.

-Cliff Lee, Phillies, struck out nine in a six-hitter, leading Philadelphia to a 5-0 win over Washington.

-Adam LaRoche, Braves, homered twice and drove in three runs in Atlanta's 6-0 victory against the New York Mets.

-David Ortiz, Red Sox, hit his record-breaking 270th homer as a designated hitter and had an RBI single in Boston's 4-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

-Travis Snider, Blue Jays, homered twice and drove in three runs to power Toronto to a 10-4 victory at the New York Yankees.

-Barry Zito, Giants, struck out a season-high nine and allowed five hits and two runs in seven efficient innings, leading San Francisco to a 10-2 win over Colorado.

-Alberto Callaspo, David DeJesus and Miguel Olivo, Royals, each hit a three-run homer in Kansas City's 11-1 win at Detroit.

-Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks, hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Padres closer Heath Bell, leading Arizona to a 4-2 win over San Diego.

-Matt Wieters, Orioles, homered and had a career-high five RBIs to lift Baltimore to a 10-5 win against Tampa Bay.

-Geovany Soto, Cubs, homered and drove in three runs to help Chicago to a 13-7 win against Milwaukee.

-Rajai Davis, Athletics, matched a career best with four RBIs in Oakland's 6-1 victory at Texas.

            MR. CLUTCH

Andre Ethier hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning for his major league-leading sixth walkoff hit of the season, giving Los Angeles a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh. Four of Ethier's game-ending hits have been home runs.

            RUMBLE IN THE BRONX

Yankees star Jorge Posada and Toronto reliever Jesse Carlson got into a fight near home plate, leading to a frenzied, bench-clearing brawl during the Blue Jays' 10-4 victory. Carlson threw behind Posada in the eighth, but trouble was avoided. After scoring on Brett Gardner's double, Posada brushed Carlson, who was on his way to back up the plate. Carlson shouted curses at the star catcher, who spun around and came back at Carlson. The two wrestled to the ground as the benches and bullpens emptied and other scuffles broke out between home plate and the New York dugout.

            WELCOME BACK

Daisuke Matsuzaka returned from a three-month stint on the disabled list and pitched six shutout innings to lead Boston to a 4-1 victory over the Angels. An 18-game winner last year, Matsuzaka (2-5) got a standing ovation when he was relieved after one batter in the seventh. Matsuzaka, who gave up three hits, was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder problems on June 21.

            YOUTH IS SERVED

Rookies Tommy Hanson of Atlanta, Sean West of Florida and Matt Wieters of Baltimore each had a nice day. Hanson pitched seven innings in the Braves' 6-0 win over the New York Mets; West had a season-high nine strikeouts to outpitch 18-game winner Adam Wainwright in the Marlins' 2-1 victory against St. Louis; and Wieters homered and had a career-high five RBIs to lead the Orioles to a 10-5 win over Tampa Bay.

            CLOSING TIME

All-Star closer Joe Nathan reached a milestone in Minnesota's 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians. Nathan gave up a one-out solo homer to Matt LaPorta in the ninth but got his 40th save, reaching that figure for the third time in his career and first since recording 43 in 2005.

            TOO SOON

Michael Young returned to Texas' lineup against Oakland but left after one at-bat as the designated hitter. The All-Star third baseman, who had missed two weeks because of a strained left hamstring, flied out in the first inning. The Rangers said Young felt OK but just wanted another day or two before playing full-time again. Texas lost 6-1 to the Athletics and is 5 1/2 games behind AL wild-card leader Boston.

            SPEAKING

"I don't want my kids to see that. ... Fight in the middle of the field, benches clearing - that's a bad example.'' - Yankees catcher Jorge Posada after his fight with Toronto reliever Jesse Carlson touched off a frenzied, bench-clearing brawl during the Blue Jays' 10-4 victory over the Yankees.

            SEASONS

            Sept. 16

1914 - Roger Peckinpaugh, at 23, was hired to finish the season as manager of the New York Yankees.

1924 - Jim Bottomley went 6-for-6 with two home runs and batted in a record 12 runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 17-3.

1960 - Warren Spahn, 39, pitched a no-hitter and set a Braves record with 15 strikeouts. Milwaukee beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0.

1965 - Dave Morehead of the Boston Red Sox pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park.

1975 - The Pittsburgh Pirates routed the Chicago Cubs 22-0 at Wrigley Field. It was the most one-sided shutout since 1900. Rennie Stennett had seven hits, including two two-hit innings.

1987 - Joe Carter of the Cleveland Indians became the ninth major leaguer to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season when he stole his career-high 30th base in the fourth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

1988 - Cincinnati's Tom Browning pitched a perfect game as the Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0. Browning struck out eight and allowed eight balls to be hit out of the infield.

1993 - Dave Winfield of the Minnesota Twins became the 19th player in major league history to get 3,000 hits with a single off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley.

1996 - Paul Molitor got his 3,000th career hit, becoming the 21st major leaguer to reach the mark and the first to do it with a triple.

1997 - Philadelphia's Curt Schilling struck out nine in the Phillies win over the New York Mets to become the 13th pitcher since 1900 with 300 strikeouts in a season.

2000 - Chicago's Sammy Sosa became the third player to hit 50 home runs in three different seasons, joining Babe Ruth and Mark McGwire. Sosa homered in the Cubs' 7-6 loss to St. Louis, joining McGwire as the only players to hit 50 in three straight years.

2006 - Washington's Alfonso Soriano became the fourth player in major league history to record 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season in an 8-4 win over Milwaukee. Soriano swiped second base, his 40th stolen base, to go along with 45 home runs. Jose Canseco (Oakland, 1988), Barry Bonds (San Francisco, 1996) and Alex Rodriguez (Seattle, 1998) are the others.

2006 - Chone Figgins hit for the cycle in the Los Angeles Angels' 12-6 loss to the Texas Rangers.

2007 - Jim Thome became the 23rd player - and third this season - to reach 500 home runs. The slugger hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Dustin Moseley to give the Chicago White Sox a 9-7 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

2007 - Todd Jones pitched a shaky ninth inning for his 300th career save in Detroit's 6-4 win over Minnesota, becoming the 21st pitcher in major league history to reach the mark.

Today's birthday: Brandon Moss 26; Robin Yount 54

              This Day in Baseball

On September 16 in Baseball History...

1905 - The New York Highlanders find themselves a little short on infielders, so right fielder Willie Keeler, who is left-handed, plays second base in both halves of a twin bill.

1914 - Roger Peckinpaugh, at twenty-three, was hired to finish the season as manager of the New York Yankees.

1919 - Dutch Ruether beats the Giants 4-3 to clinch Cincinnati's first pennant since American Association days.

1924 - Jim Bottomley went six-for-six and batted in a record twelve runs as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Brooklyn Dodgers 17-3. His hits included two home runs.

1940 - Rookie Johnny Lucadello of the St. Louis Browns hits home runs from each side of the plate against the New York Yankees in a 16-4 Browns win. Only Wally Schang, in 1916, had accomplished the same feat in the American League. Mickey Mantle in 1955 will be the next American League player to do it. These are the only home runs Lucadello hits all year.

1957 - The Los Angeles City Council approves a 300-acre site in Chavez Ravine for a Dodger stadium if the club will finance a public recreation area.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

The Blue Jays are baseball’s most inconsistent team when it comes to wins and losses. But in recent games Toronto hasn’t been on the fence about one particular thing.

The Jays have played over the total in four straight games heading into Tuesday’s series opener with the Yankees. Toronto split a four-game series with the Tigers this weekend with an average of 11 total runs per game.

Now, the Jays face the deepest lineup in baseball in the most home runs friendly stadium in the bigs. New York is averaging more than five runs per game and hitting .283 – second-best in the majors. Against Toronto, the Bronx Bombers have .279 BA and have punished their arms for 28 home runs in 16 games heading into Tuesday.

In their last 12 meetings, these AL East rivals have played over the posted total eight times – including their most recent meeting (before Tuesday) which was a 14-8 slugfest in Toronto earlier this month.

                      Pick: Over

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins (-150, 9)

With a 5.5-game cushion between the Minnesota Twins and the AL Central lead, the club could be considering packing up shop for 2009.

A recent rash of injuries hasn’t made things easy on the Twins. Star first baseman Justin Morneau missed Monday’s game with a bad back, DH Jason Kubel is in-and-out with a sore knee and third baseman Joe Crede has been shut down for the remainder of the season with sore back.

Minnesota won back-to-back games heading into Tuesday, but has struggled at the plate this month. The Twins are batting .262 and averaging under four runs per game, leading to a 6-7 September record.

Morneau, the biggest of the team’s concerns, has been nursing his aching back for some time now, according to manager Ron Gardenhire. Morneau aggravated the injury when sliding into first base Friday. An MRI later revealed inflammation in his spine. He’s hitting just .201 in the second half of the season.

"It's to the point now where we're checking on him," Gardenhire told the media.

                      Pick: Cleveland +142

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Rich Harden (9-8, 4.04 ERA), Chicago Cubs

It’s hard to believe the Cubs put this guy on waivers in August. His WHIP (walks + hits per inning) is always a bit too high, but you’ve got to love his ability to get out of a jam with a timely strikeout.

Chicago has won four of his its last five games with the flame-throwing righty on the bump. He doesn’t go too deep into games (14 innings in his last three outings) but he keeps things close.

Jorge De La Rosa (14-9, 4.37), Colorado Rockies

De La Rosa is enjoying a fantastic final month of the regular season. Despite walking 13 over his last 18 innings, the lefty hurler is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in September.

The Rockies have won six of De La Rosa’s last seven starts dating back to Aug. 10.

His teammates will have to deliver a few more runs for De La Rosa to be successful Wednesday night. Entering Tuesday’s game, Colorado has scored just six runs in its last six games.

Joe Saunders (13-7, 4.81), Los Angeles Angels

Saunders appears to have finally shaken injuries and returned to his 2008 form. The lefty has given up just five runs in his last four starts and the Halos have in each of his last four appearances.

Saunders is 4-0 with a 1.85 ERA since coming off the disabled list with shoulder stiffness. The under has also hit in three of those four games.

                        Slumping

Andy Sonnanstine (6-9, 7.15), Tampa Bay Rays

The last time Sonnanstine started a game for the Rays, he got tagged for eight runs in a little over two innings of work. That was just over a week ago. Problems with rotation have forced Joe Maddon to return to the righty pitcher to the five-man group.

He was down in the minors for most of July and August, but was recalled to fill in following Scott Kazmir’s departure.

He proved to be just as ineffective in his two return starts (0-2, 13 runs allowed in 7.2 innings pitched), but the slumping Rays don’t have many other options for a No. 5 starter.

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers [7:05 PM ET]

Athletics: The Athletics are playing well, winning seven of their last nine games. Oakland is batting above .300 during this span while averaging 6.5 runs. Ryan Sweeney has been Oakland’s hottest batter with 12 hits in his last 27 at bats (.444) with eight RBIs in his last six games. Trevor Cahill (8-12, 4.74 ERA) is looking to rebound from one of his worst starts. The 21-year-old right-hander gave up three runs, five hits and two walks to the White Sox on the road last week before getting the hook in the third inning. He’s allowed 26 homers, the most ever by an Oakland rookie. The Rangers knocked out two homers against Cahill when they faced him on Aug. 6 on their way to scoring five runs on eight hits in a 6-4 Texas win. The teams are 14-6-1 to the under in their last 21 head-to-head meetings.

The Athletics are 19-45 in their past 64 road games versus teams with a winning record.

                              Key Injuries - None.

Rangers (-$1.50, O/U 10): The Rangers could be pressing. They are 1-5 on their current homestand and trail AL wild-card leader Boston by 6 ½ games. Texas has managed just one run in its last 28 innings. The Rangers have been without All-Stars Michael Young and Josh Hamilton. Young played for the first time since Sept. 1 as a DH on Tuesday. He flew out in his only at bat and was replaced. Young has been out with a strained left hamstring. He said he felt OK, but wanted to wait another day or two before playing full-time again. Right-hander Dustin Nippert (5-2, 3.95 ERA) is slated to make his first start since Sept. 1 when he beat the Blue Jays, allowing two runs in six innings during a 5-2 victory. Nippert is 3-2 as a starter with a 4.43 ERA. He’s 2-0 out of the bullpen with a 0.90 ERA.

The Under is 76-34-6 (69 percent) in the Rangers’ last 116 games.

He has 25 strikeouts in his last four starts, but also has walked 17 during this span. The under has cashed seven of the past 10 times De La Rosa has been an underdog.

Matt Cain has been one of the best pitchers in baseball with a 13-5 record and 2.61 ERA. The Giants have won three of Cain’s four starts against Colorado this season. He last faced the Rockies on Aug. 30, where he surrendered four runs in six innings giving up back-to-back homers to Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki. Cain hasn’t been as dominant in his last three starts, allowing 10 earned runs and 19 hits, including three home runs, in 19 innings. The right-hander is 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA when pitching at home this year. The Giants are 18-6 in Cain’s last 24 starts. San Francisco is 6-1 against NL West teams the past seven times Cain has faced them. Catcher Bengie Molina is 9-for-22 (.409) in his last six games
