MIAMI OHIO (-12.5) 36 Marshall 20
04:30 PM Pacific Time Wednesday, Nov-12
Miami-Ohio was very impressive in their 33-10 win over Bowling Green last Tuesday and they are certainly the superior team in this match-up. However, Marshall has covered easily both times they’ve been an underdog this season, losing by just 10 points as a 19 ½ point dog at Tennessee and winning straight up at Kansas State as a 20 point dog. Backup quarterback Graham Gochneaur finished the Tennessee game and played the entire way in the upset at Kansas State, so he is good enough to stay relatively close in this game. For the season, Gochneaur has gotten plenty of playing time for the injured Stan Hill and he’s averaged a decent 6.1 yards per pass play (against teams that combine to allow 6.2 yppp on defense). Those numbers are considerably worse than the 8.0 yppp that Hill had been averaging, but Gochneaur does add a running component that Hill does not (he’s run for 189 yards at 7.3 yards per rushing play). Marshall won’t have an easy time throwing the ball against a good Miami-Ohio secondary (5.6 yppp allowed to teams that combine to average 6.2 yppp on offense), but the Thundering Herd have developed a good rushing attack this season (5.3 yards per rushing play against teams that allow 4.6 yprp on defense) and should be able to run the ball well against a mediocre Redhawks’ defensive front (4.3 yprp against teams that average 4.4 yprp on offense). Marshall probably won’t run the ball well enough to score too many points, but they should reach the 20 point plateau. Miami’s potent attack is led by heralded junior Ben Roethlisberger, who has averaged a robust 7.4 yppp this season (against teams that allow 6.5 yppp on defense). Roethlisberger is facing a decent Marshall pass defense that’s surrendered 6.3 yppp to teams that average 6.2 yppp on offense, which is better than what the Redhawks have faced on average this season. Miami’s modest rush attack (4.6 yprp against teams that allow 4.6 yprp) should perform admirably against a sub-par Herd run defense (4.7 yprp allowed to teams that average 4.5 yprp on offense), so Miami’s offense overall should perform at it’s normal level. Miami has a huge edge in special teams and my math model favors the Redhawks by 16 points overall
