    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, September 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockies take on the Giants, the Yankees battle the Blue Jays' ace, and the Red Sox have a date with the Angels.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Ubaldo Jimenez (13-10, 3.32 ERA) will take on Barry Zito (9-12, 3.99 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Rockies continue their series in San Francisco. Jimenez continues to turn in solid outings for Colorado; the righthander is 6-1 with a no-decision in his last eight starts, allowing three or fewer runs in each outing. Lefthander Zito took a loss against the Padres last time out, surrendering three runs over five innings of work. San Francisco is 7-3 in Zito's last 10 mound trips.

Also on the National League schedule for Tuesday: Washington at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, the Mets at Atlanta, Florida at St. Louis, Arizona at San Diego, Pittsburgh at the Dodgers, and Milwaukee at the Cubs. Yovani Gallardo (12-11, 3.59 ERA) will take on Carlos Zambrano (8-6, 3.77 ERA) in that last matchup. Righthander Zambrano picked up his first win since returning from injury last time out, holding the Pirates to two runs on five hits over his six innings.

Over in the American League the Yankees will send Chad Gaudin (1-0, 3.42 ERA) to the mound at home against the Blue Jays and Roy Halladay (14-9, 3.03 ERA). Righthander Gaudin took a no-decision against the Rays last time out despite allowing just one run in six innings of work. Righthander Halladay dazzled the Yankees back on September 4, throwing a complete-game shutout while giving up just one hit. Halladay, though, is only 1-4 in his last five outings.

Rounding out the AL slate for Tuesday: Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Kansas City at Detroit, Oakland at Texas, Cleveland at Minnesota, the White Sox at Seattle, and the Angels at Boston. John Lackey (10-7, 3.53 ERA) is scheduled to start for Los Angeles in that game; righthander Lackey pitched a complete-game shutout against the Mariners last time out. Righthander Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-5, 8.23 ERA) is expected to be activated from the disabled list and start for the Red Sox.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's helpful tips

      Tuesday, September 15

      Here's to you, Mr. Robinson

Kansas City Royals righthander Robinson Tejada had a nice run as a reliever in August, allowing just one run in 16 1-3 innings. The Royals decided to move him into the rotation and have gotten similar results, with Tejada pitching 11 1-3 scoreless innings over two starts. Since July 31, Tejada has allowed one run and nine hits in 28 innings with 35 strikeouts and just nine walks. The Royals are +152 at Detroit.

      Man of steel

Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro safety Troy Polamalu told Pittsburghlive.com that he will not need surgery for the sprained left MCL he suffered in Thursday's season-opening win over Tennessee. He will be replaced by Tyrone Carter.

Polamalu is out three to six weeks, which means it is possible he may miss just two games - road contests vs. Chicago and Cincinnati, each of whom had just one touchdown in their first game. A home game at San Diego on Oct. 4 is 24 days - or slightly more than three weeks - after the day Polamalu got hurt.

      Under the gun

The total has been under in five of the last six starts made by Toronto's Roy Halladay, including twice when the number was 7.5. The total is 8.5 for Halladay's matchup with Joba Chamberlain at Yankee Stadium. ... Righthander Kip Wells of the Cincinnati Reds has pitched to the under in his last five starts, with no more than seven runs scored in any of those games. The total is 8.5 for Wells' home showdown with Houston's Roy Oswalt.

      Over the top

Florida Marlins lefthander Sean West has won his last three starts and the total as gone over each time. The Marlins have given 28 runs of support to West, who faces Adam Wainwright and host St. Louis with a total of 8.0, the lowest number in any of West's starts this season.

      Operation shutdown

The total for the Colorado-San Francisco game is 7.0, and with good reason. Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez has pitcher to the under in his last nine starts. The under is 8-2-1 in the last 11 outings by Giants starter Barry Zito.

      Family matters

North Texas was going to have its hands full Saturday with ranked Alabama even before starting quarterback Riley Dodge went down with a separated shoulder suffered in a loss to Ohio. The son of coach Todd Dodge, Riley Dodge threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns in the first two games.

Junior Nathan Tune came on and was 9-of-15 for 69 yards, throwing more passes than he had in his entire career. The Mean Green are +32 at Alabama and could be without Dodge for the Sun Belt Conference season opener vs. Middle Tennessee on Sept. 26.

      Notable Quotable

"Talk about a guy that's a great leader. ... He plays an entire half of football with a dislocated wrist. I don't think there's many people who can do something like that."

-- Chicago Bears backup middle linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer, who replaced Brian Urlacher in the second half of Sunday's 21-15 loss at Green Bay. Urlacher is out for the season.

        Six-pack for Tuesday

-- UCLA QB Prince has a broken jaw, is out 3-4 weeks.

-- Brian Urlacher had pins inserted in his dislocated wrist and is done for the season, culminating an ugly first weekend for the Bears.

-- Not counting Browns, Texans who have never won division titles, the longest drought for a division title belongs to Detroit (1993).

-- Sunday was third year in row Tony Romo passed for 300+ yards on Opening Day. Sunday night against the Giants is a stiffer test.

-- NFL teams that win in Week 1 make playoffs 54% of the time, and teams that lose in Week 1 make playoffs just under 25% of the time.

-- Three men in the TV booth is too many, if Golic and Steve Young are two of them; they rarely shut up. Words were colliding in mid-air.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our first NFL List of 13......

Its too early to do this, after just one game, but its better than writing again on how the Tampa Rays have bagged it for the season, so without further ado, here's our first top 13 list of the '09 season.......

        13) Seahawks-- Hasselbeck is healthy, rookie LB Curry looks like the real deal-- think they're far and away best team in NFC West.

        12) Packers-- Have to give GM Thompson credit; seems like he's going to come out smelling like a rose in the transition from Favre to Rodgers.

        11) Titans-- Not whole lot of teams win at Heinz Field, especially when they were the last team to beat the Steelers.

        10) Eagles-- Would be higher on list if McNabb's ribs were healthy.

        9) Patriots-- Lot of new faces on offense; they're lucky Bills choked Monday. Interesting game with Jets this week.

        8) Vikings-- Peterson is awesome, so eventually teams are going to have to single cover receivers and make Favre try and beat them.

        7) Chargers-- Lost C Hardwick last night, getting hurt on a play that had been whistled down for delay of game. Horrible officiating-- how about taking control of the game? Bolts lost two offensive linemen Monday.

        6) Saints-- Love watching them play, but do they have a defense?

        5) Ravens-- Its not often an NFL team gets 32 first downs in a game, but Ravens did; the TD they gave up on blocked punt and a missed FG are issues for former special teams coach Harbaugh.

        4) Cowboys-- Romo must feel same way Eli Manning felt after Jeremy Shockey got hurt two years ago; its a lot easier distributing the ball when one of your better players isn't always bitching about not getting it.

        3) Giants-- Very interesting game in JerryDome Sunday night.

        2) Falcons-- They are well balanced on offense and tough on defense; is this first time in franchise history they have consecutive winning years?

        1) Steelers-- Defending champs are always on top of the list until they at least lose a game. Beating Tennessee is an excellent win.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins (-201, 9)

The Twins last gasp to catch the Tigers in the Central is being severely dampened by a rash of injuries. Third baseman Joe Crede is done for the year, MVP first baseman Justin Morneau is nursing a sore back.

Morneau is hitting just .201 since the All-Star break leaving catcher Joe Mauer with little protection in the heart of the order. Making matters worse, DH/outfielder Jason Kubel is missing time because of sore neck.

Detroit magic number is dropping and so are the Twins playoff chances.

The Twins are also just 1-4 in their last five games as a favorite.

              Pick: Indians

Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds (+146, 8.5)

The Reds happily returned young stud outfielder Jay Bruce Monday against the Astros. Bruce, who had missed the previous two months because of a wrist injury, delivered the go-ahead single as a pinch-hitter.

“That was a lot of fun,” he told the Associated Press after the game. “It was pretty exciting to be out that long and come back and help the team win.”

Cincy was having a great time a week ago. The Reds won 12 of 14 games between Aug. 23 and Sept. 6. Of course they followed that with a five-game losing streak immediately afterwards.

“We’re trying to get to respectability,” manager Dusty Baker told reporters last week. “There’s a chance to catch a couple of teams ahead of us, and that’s what we’re trying to do.”

Baker’s club has been doing a good job of that lately. The team is 9-2 in its last 11 against NL Central foes. Look for the Reds to take another game from their division rivals on Tuesday.

              Pick: Reds

                Streaking

Adam Wainwright (18-7, 2.59 ERA), St. Louis Cardinals

The righthander leads the major leagues in wins and likely has four starts to get the two victories he needs for 20. If he continues to pitch the way he has over the last five-plus weeks, he will only need two.

The Cardinals have won the last seven games started by Wainwright, who is 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in that span and appears to be getting better, even though he already has established a career high in innings.

After Wainwright's streak of 13 quality starts ended, he bounced right back by holding the Brewers without a run in their park over seven innings. He is on the short list of candidates for the National League Cy Young Award.

"It would be cool," he told the team's web site. "It would be awesome to win that. ... Whether I win it or not, I still feel pretty good about my season."

John Lackey (10-7, 3.53), Los Angeles Angels

The veteran righthander appears to be on a much better track in preparing for the postseason than he was a year ago.

Beginning Aug. 31, 2008, the Angels lost six of the last seven games that Lackey started, including both of his postseason appearances vs. Boston. Lackey was 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA.

Beginning with a start Aug. 30 of this season, Lackey is 2-0 with a 0.35 ERA and a streak of 17 scoreless innings. The Angels have won all three starts.

                Returning

Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-5, 8.23), Boston Red Sox

There are many people excited about the Japanese righthander's return to Boston's rotation. Red Sox Nation, of course. And countless American League hitters.

After receiving Cy Young Award consideration in 2008, Matsuzaka reported to spring training overweight and out of shape. He developed shoulder issues and was 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA, an unfathomable 2.63 WHIP and zero quality starts in eight outings before going on the 60-day disabled list.

Matsuzaka is 1-1 in three all-time starts vs. the Angels, including a five-inning win in last year's postseason.

                Slumping

Zach Duke (10-14, 3.97), Pittsburgh Pirates

Is the lefthander tired? He has surpassed last season's innings total with four starts remaining but appears to be running out of gas.

Duke is 0-3 with a 12.46 ERA in his last three starts. His WHIP is an astronomical 2.85 - that's nearly a baserunner for every retired batter, folks - and he has surrendered five homers.

Duke has allowed 13 first-inning runs in his last three starts.-

                    SCOREBOARD

                    Tuesday, Sept. 15

L.A. Angels at Boston (7:10 p.m.EDT). Boston's Daisuke Matsuzaka, on the disabled list since June 21 with a mild shoulder strain, is scheduled to start against the Red Sox's potential first-round opponent. The Angels send 10-game winner John Lackey to the mound.

                    STARS

                    Monday

-Tim Lincecum, Giants, struck out 11 over seven strong innings in his return from a balky back to help San Francisco gain ground in the NL wild-card race with a 9-1 victory over Colorado.

-Brett Tomko, Athletics, pitched a five-hitter for his 100th major league win as Oakland routed Texas 9-0. It was Tomko's second career shutout and 13th complete game. He beat Scott Feldman, snapping the right-hander's seven-game winning streak.

-Mariano Rivera, Yankees, reached 40 saves for the first time in four years and the seventh time in his career by closing out New York's 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

-Matt Holliday, Cardinals, drove in three runs to top 100 RBIs for the third time in his career, leading St. Louis to an 11-6 victory over Florida.

-Derrek Lee, Cubs, homered for the seventh time in 10 games to help Chicago beat Milwaukee 2-0.

                    BAD BREAK

Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau will miss the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in his lower back. The 2006 AL MVP hurt himself on a headfirst slide into first base Friday, but he's been playing with pain much longer than that. He's not supposed to do anything but rest for the next three months, but the injury doesn't require surgery. He said he's "99 percent'' sure he'll be at full strength for spring training. Despite a severe second-half slump, Morneau has 30 homers and 100 RBIs. The Twins also think third baseman Joe Crede is done for the year because of a back problem that flared up this summer.

                    EUREKA!

Tampa Bay ended its 11-game losing streak, getting 15 hits and an effective pitching performance by David Price to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-4. The Rays avoided becoming the first World Series team in history to lose 12 in a row the following year. Rookie Reid Brignac had a career-high four hits - his first big league homer, two doubles and a single - and B.J. Upton also connected for Tampa Bay. Held to eight runs in their previous seven games, the Rays equaled that amount by the fifth inning.

                    BIG UNIT IN THE BULLPEN

Randy Johnson was encouraged with his performance in a simulated game and hopes to return to pitch out of the bullpen for San Francisco during the stretch run. The 45-year-old lefty threw 53 pitches, including warmups, before the Giants hosted Colorado. The Big Unit, who reached 300 wins earlier this season, was on the mound at AT&T Park for the first time since injuring his pitching shoulder more than two months ago.

                    A LITTLE RELIEF

Detroit reliever Fernando Rodney had his three-game suspension reduced to two games. Rodney was punished for heaving a ball toward the stands after he hung on for a shaky save at Tampa Bay on Sept. 4. The ball landed in the press box at Tropicana Field. Rodney appealed and the penalty was cut. The right-hander has 32 saves in 33 chances for the AL Central leaders.

                    CLUTCH HOMERS

Pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff belted a tying, three-run homer through the raindrops in the ninth and Detroit beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 in 10 innings. Huff, who connected off Jason Frasor, was obtained from Baltimore on Aug. 17 for a minor league pitcher. ... Michael Cuddyer's three-run homer off Chris Perez rescued the Twins in the eighth inning, tying the score before Minnesota went on to a 6-3 victory over Cleveland.

                    STEADY AT BOTH ENDS

Ryan Dempster pitched eight sharp innings for the Chicago Cubs in a 2-0 victory over Milwaukee, joining John Smoltz as the only pitchers to follow three 20-save seasons with two 10-win seasons as a starter. Dempster (10-8) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four.

                    GLAD TO BE BACK

Pinch-hitter Jay Bruce had a go-ahead single in his return from the disabled list, sending Cincinnati to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros. Making his first appearance in more than two months, Bruce bounced a two-run single through the right side to give the Reds a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning. Bruce, who broke his wrist making a diving catch against the New York Mets on July 11, stayed in the game and made a sliding catch of Miguel Tejada's liner leading off the ninth.

                    INJURED INDIANS

Cleveland placed center fielder Grady Sizemore and reliever Joe Smith on the 15-day disabled list. Smith has a sprained left knee and didn't travel with the team to Minnesota, but manager Eric Wedge said he's optimistic Smith can pitch again before the season is over. Smith's DL stint is retroactive to Sept. 1. Sizemore had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow last week and the three-time All-Star is scheduled for lower abdominal surgery Wednesday, so the DL move was merely procedural. Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff also said minor league pitcher Jason Knapp will have surgery to repair a pre-existing condition in his right shoulder. Knapp was acquired from Philadelphia in the Cliff Lee trade in July.

                    SPEAKING

"Sleep is more tranquil, food tastes better and I like my dog a whole lot more.'' - Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon after his team snapped an 11-game losing streak with an 8-4 victory at Baltimore.

                    SEASONS

                    Sept. 15

1912 - Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox pitched his 16th consecutive victory to tie Walter Johnson's record with a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Browns.

1938 - Brothers Lloyd and Paul Waner hit back-to-back homers for the Pittsburgh Pirates off Cliff Melton of the New York Giants. This was the only time brothers hit successive home runs in a major league game. It was Lloyd's last homer.

1946 - The Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Chicago Cubs 2-0 in five innings when the game was called because of gnats. The insects became such a problem for the players, umpires and fans that the game had to be stopped.

1963 - All three Alou brothers - Felipe, Matty and Jesus - played in the outfield at the same time for the San Francisco Giants in a 13-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

1969 - St. Louis left-hander Steve Carlton struck out 19 Mets for a nine-inning game record. New York won the game 4-3 on two, two-run homers by Ron Swoboda.

1971 - Houston pitcher Larry Yount, the older brother of Hall of Famer Robin Yount, was credited with his only major league appearance and didn't throw a pitch. Yount took the mound in the ninth inning of a 4-2 loss to Atlanta and after a few warmup tosses had to leave with elbow pain. He never appeared in another major league game.

1979 - Bob Watson of the Red Sox became the first player to hit for the cycle in both leagues as he led Boston to a 10-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. He hit for the cycle with the Houston Astros against San Francisco on June 24, 1977.

1990 - Bobby Thigpen pitched one inning and became the first relief pitcher with 50 saves in a season as the Chicago White Sox beat the Red Sox 7-4.

1996 - The Baltimore Orioles set baseball's season home run record with five against Detroit, including Mark Parent's record breaking shot in the third inning and Brady Anderson's 10th leadoff homer of the year. The homers gave the Orioles 243, three more than the 1961 New York Yankees.

1997 - Baltimore outfielder Eric Davis played five innings in the opening game of a day-night doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians, his first game since colon cancer surgery in June.

1997 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 51st and 52nd homers in Seattle's win over Toronto to become the sixth major league player to hit 100 or more home runs over two consecutive seasons. Griffey hit 49 homers last season.

1998 - Ken Griffey Jr. hit his AL-leading 52nd homer and drove in five runs to become the fourth-youngest player to reach 1,000 RBIs, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Minnesota Twins 12-7.

2002 - Arizona's Curt Schilling struck out eight to reach 300 for the season, joining Randy Johnson as the first teammates in baseball history to each strike out 300 in the same season. The Diamondbacks beat Milwaukee 6-5 in 13 innings.

2003 - Texas designated hitter Rafael Palmeiro hit his 35th home run, joining Jimmie Foxx as the only players with at least 35 homers and 100 RBIs in nine straight seasons. Palmeiro's 525th career homer, a solo shot, came in the fourth inning of the Rangers' 6-4 victory over Seattle.

2006 - Dan Uggla set the major league record for home runs by a rookie second baseman with his 25th in Florida's 6-4 win over Atlanta.

2008 - In an unprecedented move, the Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ned Yost. It marked the first time in major league history - except the strike-split 1981 season - that a manager was fired in August or later with his team in playoff position. The Brewers, 83-67, had lost seven of eight and fallen into a tie with Philadelphia for the NL wild-card lead.

Today's birthdays: Matt Thornton 33; Gaylord Perry 71

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox [7:10 PM ET]

Angels (-$1.10, O/U 9.5): The Angels could be tired playing in their third different city in three days. The Angels arrived in New York at 2 a.m. for a makeup game against the Yankees on Monday. The Red Sox, on the other hand, were idle on Monday. The Angels have won six of their last seven games at Fenway Park. They lead the majors in team batting average and are on pace to break the franchise record for runs scored in a season. John Lackey (10-7, 3.53 ERA) has allowed just one earned run in his last three starts spanning 26 innings. He shut out the Mariners on Thursday allowing five hits and only one walk while fanning seven. Lackey had good bite on his breaking ball and his fastball was consistently in the 92-94 mph range. Lackey, however, is 2-4 at Fenway Park with a 6.34 ERA in eight career starts there.

The Angels are 27-13 in their last 40 road contests.
The Under is 11-1-1 in the Angels’ last 13 games versus a right-handed starter.

                            Key Injuries - None

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Red Sox: Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to make his first big league appearance since June 19, nearly three months after going on the DL with right shoulder woes. The 28-year-old right-hander has had a miserable Major League season this year after leading Japan to its second consecutive World Baseball Classic title in the spring. Matsuzaka is 1-5 with an 8.23 ERA. Boston is 0-4 in Matsuzaka’s last four home starts. “Dice-K” was tagged for six runs on seven hits in five innings during his one career regular-season outing versus the Angels. The Red Sox have dropped 13 of their last 18 games to the Angels. They are 3-7 in their last 10 versus AL West clubs. The Red Sox have won 49 of their past 68 home contests. They are 39-14 in their last 53 games at Fenway Park when facing a right-handed starter. Boston is 36-17 when playing on Tuesday.

The Over is 16-7 in Boston’s last 23 home contests.

                            Key Injuries - None

PROJECTED SCORE: 4 (UNDER - Total of the Day)

Florida Marlins at St. Louis Cardinals [8:15 PM ET]

Marlins: The Marlins have a motivation edge gunning for a wild-card spot, while the Cardinals are waltzing to the NL Central Division title. Florida has won eight of its last 12 games. The Marlins, though, have lost seven of their past nine games at Busch Stadium. They are 8-21 in their last 29 overall games against the Cardinals. Rookie lefty Sean West will be making his 18th big league start. He’s 6-5 with a 4.81 ERA. The Marlins will be monitoring West closely since he’s thrown 152 innings this season, counting his minor league innings. West also turned his ankle in his last start running the bases in the fifth inning on Thursday against the Mets and had to be removed after going four plus innings. He had given up four earned runs and six hits. The teams are 11-6-1 to the under in their last 18 head-to-head meetings.

The Over is 27-12-1 in Florida’s last 40 games.

Key Injuries - Jeremy Hermida (oblique) is out.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Cardinals (-$2.40, O/U 8 over -$1.15): Adam Wainwright could add to his Cy Young credentials with another strong performance. Wainwright’s 18 victories are the most in the majors and his 2.59 ERA ranks No. 3 in the National League. Since the All-Star break, Wainwright has a 1.81 ERA and has surrendered just three homers in 74 2/3 innings during that span. He pitched seven scoreless innings against Milwaukee on Wednesday in picking up his latest victory. Matt Holliday is batting .371 with 48 RBIs in 47 games since being acquired from Oakland on July 24. Holliday has helped St. Louis go 33-14 during this time frame. The Cardinals, though, were in danger of losing five in a row for the first time since June, but ended their four-game losing streak battering the Marlins, 11-6, on Monday night. Despite that high score, the Cardinals still are 20-10-1 to the under in their last 31 home contests.

The Cardinals are 39-13 in their last 52 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - John Smoltz (shoulder) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (Side of the Day)
