Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Patriots host the Bills, the Chargers start their season in Oakland, and the Rockies and Giants begin a big set in San Fran.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Tom Brady will finally see some regular-season action on Monday night as the Patriots play their opener at home against the division-rival Bills. The Pats, who missed the playoffs last year with Brady out of action, are pegged as big 11-point favorites for Monday night, with the total for the game set at 47 points. Wes Welker (knee) was listed as QUESTIONABLE on the injury report for New England, but is expected to play. Bills RB Marshawn Lynch is out until Week 4 as he serves a suspension, so he won't see action in Terrell Owens' Buffalo debut.

Meanwhile, the second part of the Monday night doubleheader has San Diego at Oakland, with the Chargers set as 9.5-point road favorites (and the total at 43 points). The Raiders' most recent drama was put to an end on Saturday, as newly-acquired DE Richard Seymour finally reported to the team - he'll be in action on Monday night. Darren McFadden was named Oakland's starting RB earlier in the week. DE Jacques Cesaire was listed as QUESTIONABLE for the Chargers for Monday's opener; his calf injury could keep him out Monday night.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.31 ERA) will go up against Tim Lincecum (13-5, 2.34 ERA) on Monday night as the Rockies begin a key National League series on the road against the Giants. Righthander Hammel took a no-decision against the Reds in his most recent start, giving up two earned runs over 7 1-3 innings of work. Righthander Lincecum was tagged with a hard-luck loss by the Phillies in his last outing; Lincecum gave up two runs over seven innings, while fanning 11.

Also on the Senior Circuit slate for Monday: Houston at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at the Cubs, Arizona at San Diego, Pittsburgh at the Dodgers, and Florida at St. Louis. The Marlins will go with Ricky Nolasco (11-8, 5.23 ERA) in that last contest, while the Cardinals counter with Todd Wellemeyer (7-9, 5.62 ERA). Righthander Nolasco is coming off consecutive wins over the Mets and Braves. Righthander Wellemeyer replaces John Smoltz (sore shoulder) for the matchup.

There are just five games on the American League schedule for Monday, with Tampa Bay at Baltimore, Toronto at Detroit, Oakland at Texas, Cleveland at Minnesota, and the Angels at the Yankees. Jered Weaver (15-5, 3.76) guns for his 16th win of the season for Los Angeles; righthander Weaver has won two straight starts over the Mariners and Royals. Joba Chamberlain (8-5, 4.45 ERA) is slated to start for New York; he's expected to be on a limited pitch count again.

Home on the Ranger

Texas righthander Scott Feldman has been absolutely lights-out in his last four starts, winning all four and allowing just one run and 17 hits in 26 1-3 innings. He is pitching as well as any American League pitcher right now.

Keep in mind that Feldman's hot streak took place entirely on the road. His last start that the Rangers lost was a home outing vs. Minnesota on Aug. 18 and his last loss was a home start vs. Detroit on July 29.

For the season, Feldman has a 4.56 ERA at home compared to just 2.58 on the road. He and the Rangers are -201 vs. Oakland.

Back in the bigs

Blue Jays lefthander David Purcey makes his first major league start in 4 1/2 months. The rookie began the season in Toronto's rotation but didn't get out of April, going 0-2 with a 7.01 ERA in five starts before being demoted to Triple-A Las Vegas.

In his last 10 starts there, Purcey was 6-3 with a 4.37 ERA, getting advice from minor league pitching coach Dave LaRoche. Toronto is +222 at Detroit.

Pat answer

The Patriots have won their last 11 meetings with the Bills, going 9-2 against the spread. The only two covers by Buffalo came at New England when the Bills were getting 10 points and lost one-score games. The host Patriots are giving 10.5 points in the opener of the MNF doubleheader.

Road rage

When the Pirates squeezed out a 2-1 victory at Houston on Sunday, they ended 13-game road losing streak in which they scored three runs or less 11 times. Pittsburgh has not won consecutive road games since June 10-11 at Atlanta. The Pirates are +222 at the Dodgers and were outscored 23-9 in their first visit there this season.

Not a Ray of hope

During their 12-game losing streak, the Rays have scored more than three runs just once. Over the last week, Gabe Gross (2-for-13), Pat Burrell (1-for-21), Fernando Perez (1-for-15) and Ben Zobrist (3-for-19) are a combined 7-for-68. Tampa Bay is -122 at Baltimore.

Not ready for prime time players

The Raiders once were the unquestioned kings of Monday Night Football. Their overall straight-up record of 36-23-1 ranks fourth all-time for any franchise that has made 20 or more appearances.

However, Oakland is 0-7 against the spread in its last seven MNF games and has been outscored 68-14 in season-opening Monday night home games in 2008 and 2006. The Raiders are getting 10 points from the Chargers.

Six-pack for Monday

-- Pedro Martinez turned back the clock Sunday night, shutting Mets out for eight innings, throwing whopping 130 pitches. Phils won 1-0.

-- Tampa Rays are in the tank, having now lost 11 games in a row.

-- Ichiro Suzuki is now first major leaguer ever with 200+ hits in each of his first nine major league seasons.

-- Russell Martin had four HRs for the year coming into weekend, but hit one each of last two days, good omen for the Dodger catcher who hit 42 home runs in his first three big league seasons.

-- Colorado lost the last two days in San Diego, behavior unbecoming a playoff team; Giants picked up a game on them today.

-- I root for the A's and Rams, who outscored Sunday by a combined score of 36-0. Not the finest of Sundays for me.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day in the NFL

13) Everyone overreacts to Week 1 results; Viking fans are making plans for Super Bowl parties in Miami, Panther-Ram-Lion fans are planning to watch the draft in April. Its one game out of 16, a very long season.

12) Seven of 11 teams that lost the turnover battle lost the game; Colts won despite a -2 turnover ratio, which is very unusual. Saints scored 45 points despite turning the over three times- that doesn't happen much.

11) In his last two games that counted, Jake Delhomme has now thrown nine INTs with only one TD pass. Backup QB MCCown got hurt too, and 3rd-stringer Moore isn't ready, so John Fox has some work to do.

10) Eagles had a defensive TD and a punt return for a TD in 3:55 span in first quarter as Philly just crushed the Panthers, 38-10. McNabb broke a rib scoring the last Eagle TD; he isn't expected to play next week.

9) Denver Broncos won, Jay Cutler threw four INTs and the Bears lost; thats a Rocky Mountain high, for sure.

8) Brandon Stokely's 87-yard reception to win the Broncos-Bengals game was longest game-winning TD from scrimmage in final minute of the fourth quarter in NFL history. It might also have been the luckiest.

7) TO Who? Tony Romo hit three different receivers on TD passes of 42-66-80 yards as Dallas pulled away from the Buccaneers 34-21. Romo averaged 12.3 yards/pass play, highest in the NFL so far this week.

6) Giants beat Washington 23-17, but they scored only six points in the red zone (three trips) and scored only one offensive TD (44-yd drive), so there's plenty of room for improvement in the Swamp. Smith had a huge catch on a 3rd-and-5 with 8:23 left that kept a drive alive.

5) So San Francisco wants to run the ball more, huh? They ran it for 21 yards in Arizona Sunday, on 25 carries. Not exactly what Singletary had in mind, but 49ers did play good defense, forcing six Redbird 3/outs in a 20-16 San Francisco win. Will exceeded skill in this game. .

4) Drew Brees is on pace to pass for 5,728 yards and 96 TDs. Don't be too excited about Saint football just yet- Matthew Stafford passed ball 37 times but wasn't sacked. New Orleans needs a better pass rush.

3) Rex Ryan seems to never shut up, but his Jets spoke volumes with their play Sunday, handing Houston a stunningly easy 24-7 loss. Has to be a bitter pill for the Texans, who expect to make playoffs this year.

2) Browns were only losing team Sunday that led at halftime (13-10).

1) Sat in Graney's (America's best sports bar) all day watching football; at 1:09, someone sitting behind me, very sadly said, "This is going to be a long year." At 1-freakin'-09, five minutes after the early games began. Now I wish I turned to see what team he was rooting for.

-Kyle Davies, Royals, carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning and won his fourth straight start, pitching Kansas City past Cleveland 7-0.

-Hideki Matsui, Yankees, homered and drove in five runs and New York avoided a three-game sweep against last-place Baltimore with a 13-3 victory.

-Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox, hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the eighth inning to send Boston to a 3-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader sweep of Tampa Bay.

-Javier Vazquez, Braves, took a shutout into the ninth inning and Atlanta beat St. Louis 9-2 to complete a three-game sweep.

-Paul Maholm, Pirates, pitched eight shutout innings and Pittsburgh snapped a 13-game road losing streak with a 2-1 victory at Houston.

HIT MACHINE

Ichiro Suzuki became the first player in major league history with at least 200 hits in nine straight seasons. The Mariners' right fielder set the mark with an infield single in the second inning of the nightcap of doubleheader against the Texas Rangers. In his second at-bat of the game, Suzuki beat out a slow roller to shortstop Elvis Andrus to break a tie with Willie Keeler, who did it for eight consecutive seasons (1894-1901).

RUN, DEREK, RUN

Derek Jeter scored three times in the Yankees 13-3 win over Baltimore to give him 101 runs on the season, reaching the century mark for the 12th time.

DURABLE

Mark Buehrle became the first pitcher in the 109-year history of the White Sox to make 30 or more starts in nine consecutive seasons. He has thrown 1,988 1-3 innings since the start of the 2001 campaign, the most in the majors during that stretch, and is two innings from reaching 200 for the ninth straight year.

RECORD BREWING

Prince Fielder homered to tie Milwaukee's single-season RBI record in a 5-3 victory over Arizona. Fielder's fourth-inning home run gave him a major league-leading 126 RBIs and tied him with Cecil Cooper for the Brewers' franchise record. Cooper, the Houston Astros' manager, set the mark in 1983.

KEEP SKIDDING

The Red Sox beat Tampa Bay 4-0 and 3-1 for a doubleheader sweep, handing the AL champion Rays their 11th consecutive loss. Tampa Bay's losing streak is the longest by a major league team this season.

RIGHT AT HOME

Brad Penny (3-0) has a perfect record since signing with the Giants on Aug. 31 - that after he lost his final four decisions with the Red Sox before they released him.

PACK IT IN

With a 5-2 loss to the Cubs, the Reds were officially eliminated from the NL Central race. They were 26-20 and 1 1/2 games out of first place on May 28 but are 38-58 since and have fallen 19 1/2 behind St. Louis. The Reds took the Central title in 1995, the first year of three-division play, but haven't won it since.

The Tigers have 150 victories since their next-door neighbors, the Lions, last won a game. ... St. Louis' Chris Carpenter gave up seven runs in six innings of a 9-2 loss to Atlanta. His league-leading 2.16 ERA coming in jumped to 2.45. He now trails the Giants' Tim Lincecum (2.34).

On September 14 in Baseball History...

1872 - An unusual play highlights the Athletics-Boston match in Philadelphia. With the Athletics leading 4-1 in the seventh inning, and runners on first and second, Fergy Malone pops up to shortstop George Wright. Wright catches the ball in his hat and then throws the ball to third base, after which it is thrown to second base. Wright claims a double play has been completed, as a batter cannot be retired with a "hat catch," and thus runners Cap Anson and Bob Reach are forced out. The umpire finally gives Malone another at bat, declaring nobody out. The Athletics win 6-4.

1878 - The Cincinnati Red Stockings and Indianapolis Blues play an exhibition game in which they experiment with calling every pitch a ball or a strike and allowing only six balls for a walk. The rules up to this time provide for the umpire to call a "warning pitch" on the first wide delivery. The reaction is favorable.

1890 - When the Buffalo Players League club captain Jay Faatz disagrees with management, Connie Mack become captain of the team. This unofficially marks the start of Mack's managing career that spans more than half a century.

1955 - Herb Score of the Indians breaks Grover Alexander's rookie record of 235 strikeouts. He finishes the season with 245.

1958 - The Yankees win their 24th pennant, and ninth under Casey Stengel. This ties Casey for first with Connie Mack for the most American League pennants won.

Colorado Rockies at San Francisco Giants (-185, 7)

This is the moment of truth for the Giants. If they still harbor dreams of the postseason, they have to make a move on the Rockies in this series.

San Francisco didn't do itself any favors by dropping the first two games of its series with the Los Angeles Dodgers by a combined 19-4 to fall 5.5 games behind the second-place Rockies, who lead the National League wild card race.

After those losses, ace Tim Lincecum had some strong words for his teammates.

"We've been pretty lax the last couple of days," he told the team's web site. "I think it's time for something to kick us in the butt. ... We have to turn something on. This is where it counts."

The kick came in the form of a 7-2 win Sunday over the Dodgers that cut the margin to 4.5 games. Now the Giants take an 18-5 record in home series openers into their matchup with the Rockies.

Lincecum, who was scratched from his last start with a back injury, held the Rockies scoreless on four hits over eight innings of a 2-0 home win Aug. 28.

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-110, 9.5)

The "Joba rules" are starting to put a strain on the Yankees bullpen.

In limiting Joba Chamberlain's season innings total, the Yankees have used their young right-hander for just three innings in each of his last three starts.

And Chamberlain has allowed at least two runs in all of those outings. He has been bailed out by Alfredo Aceves, who twice has followed him with three scoreless frames.

Meanwhile, Angels starter Jered Weaver is 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) is his last three starts. He is pitching as an underdog for the first time since June 9 at Tampa Bay, and the Angels are 2-1 when Weaver starts with the cheaper price.

For a little while last season, Jered’s older brother Jeff had the bragging rights. But Jered has bounced back with another great season.

The young hurler has allowed only three runs in his last three starts and has struck out 14 and walked just one in his last 13 1-3 innings.

“Jered’s done a terrific job of keeping us in games and giving us a chance to win on a consistent basis,” Halos manager Mike Scioscia told MLB.com. “That’s what you’re looking for from your starting pitchers, and has come through for us.”

Los Angeles is 7-3 in Weaver’s last 10 outings.

Wandy Rodriguez (13-9, 2.76), Houston Astros

The Astros ace is smoking hot over his last five trips to the mound. Houston is 3-2 in those games and the under is 4-0-1 and 7-2-1 in his last 10 starts.

He’s allowed just five earned runs over his last 35 innings pitched.

“Wandy’s been great for us,” manager Cecil Cooper told reports following a recent start against the Phillies. “I thought he was real sharp. “He kept them off balance, and that’s what you have to do with good hitting teams.”

This former reliever doesn’t provide much relief for Baltimore backers when he toes the rubber. Hernandez has given up 11 earned runs in his last two starts (7 2-3 innings) and he’s been taken out of the park seven times over the same stretch by opposing hitters.

“All of those homers were supposed to be fastballs away, but they were in the middle,” Hernandez told reporters after given up four dingers to the Sox in his last start. “Right now I’m a thrower out there. I’m not a pitcher. The worst part is when you make mistakes they’re all going to get hit hard.”

Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for September 14, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

1. Quick Hits

* Brett who? OK, Favre did win in Minnesota yesterday, but so did his rookie replacement with the Jets in impressive fashion, Mark Sanchez.

* Roger Federer guns for his 6th straight U.S. Open title today against Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina. Federer's between the legs winner to set up match point last night against Novak Djokovic was simply incredible. He called it the greatest shot he ever hit.

* Kim Clijsters won the women's title last night.

* Tiger Woods won the BWM Championship by a ridiculous 8 shots.

* The Mets are officially eliminated from playoff contention when they are beaten in Philly by their former pitcher Pedro Martinez.

* Tennis great Jack Kramer dies at the age of 88.

2. The Captain

#2 on your scorecard, #1 in your heart. As I watched Derek Jeter set the Yankees all time hit record Friday night I thought about how remarkable it was. First the names who have worn pinstripes. Ruth, Gehrig, Joe D., the Mick. But even moreso how Jeter has lived for 14 years under the biggest media spotlight and has never ever had a blip. Almost every other big superstar has had some failing, or misstep. Not Derek. OK, George Steinbrenner once tweaked him for staying out late. But he took that moment and turned it into a credit card commercial. He has loving parents, a gorgeous girlfriend and all the money in the world. And Lou Gehrig was considered the luckiest man on the face of the earth?

3. Not so Serene-uh

Serena Williams went off the deep end the other night after being called for a foot fault in her semifinal match with Kim Clijsters. She yelled at the lineswoman "I'm going to shove the ball down your f**** throat." It was her second code violation of the match which cost her a point. And since it came on match point, the match was over. You can debate all you want whether it was really a foot fault, or if it should have been called at that point in the match. But the truth is Serena was the second best player on the court that night. Maybe that's why she flipped out.
P.S. She was fined $10-thousand, so she only got to take home $340-thousand for making the singles semifinals.
P.P.S. She has yet to apologize to the line judge or the fans.

So as not to leave you hanging. San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman will not be charged for choking his girlfriend.
