    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, September 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Bears take on the Packers, the Browns try to stop the Vikings, and the Cardinals open up against the division-rival Niners.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The primetime NFL matchup on Sunday night has Chicago at Green Bay, with the Packers pegged as the 3.5-point home favorites (and the total at 46 points). The Bears could be without Charles Tillman on Sunday night; the cornerback is listed as QUESTIONABLE on the team's injury report with a sore back and will be a game-time decision. Packers DT B.J. Rali (ankle) is also QUESTIONABLE.

Sunday's early-afternoon NFL slate has Miami at Atlanta (-4), Kansas City at Baltimore (-12.5), Philadelphia (-2.5) at Carolina, Denver at Cincinnati (-4.5), the Jets at Houston (-4.5), Detroit at New Orleans (-13), Jacksonville at Indianapolis (-7), Dallas (-5.5) at Tampa Bay, and Minnesota (-4) at Cleveland. Brett Favre will make his Vikings debut Sunday; Brady Quinn is likely to start for the Browns.

The late-afternoon games feature Washington at the Giants (-6.5), St. Louis at Seattle (-7.5), and San Francisco at Arizona (-6.5). Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin was listed as QUESTIONABLE for Sunday's game with his hamstring injury; he turned in a limited practice on Friday but is still considered a game-time decision. Niners WR Michael Crabtree still hasn't signed his contract.

As well, there are a pair of Canadian Football League games on the slate for Sunday, with British Columbia at Montreal and Saskatchewan at Winnipeg. The Alouettes (7-2 straight-up, 5-4 against-the-spread) are pegged as big 11.5-point favorites in their game against the Lions (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS). The Bombers (3-6 SU, 5-4 ATS) are listed as 1-point home faves vs. the Riders (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS).

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

CC Sabathia (16-7, 3.40 ERA) will be looking to pick up his 17th victory of the season on Sunday afternoon when his Yankees host the Orioles and Jeremy Guthrie (10-13, 4.96 ERA). Lefthander Sabathia has surrendered three or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven outings, and New York is 8-0 in his last eight starts. Righthander Guthrie is coming off a strong performance against the Rangers, tossing seven shutout innings and giving up just six hits for the victory.

Also on the Sunday AL schedule: Toronto at Detroit, Kansas City at Cleveland, Oakland at Minnesota, the White Sox at the Angels, Seattle at Texas, and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays and BoSox and M's and Rangers are both scheduled to play doubleheaders Sunday; their Friday contests were rained out.

Over in the National League on Sunday the slate features a day-night doubleheader between the Mets and Phillies, as well as Washington at Florida, Pittsburgh at Houston, Cincinnati at the Cubs, Colorado at San Diego, the Dodgers at San Francisco, Milwaukee at Arizona, and Atlanta at St. Louis. Javier Vazquez (12-9, 3.06 ERA) will start for the Braves, while Chris Carpenter (16-3, 2.16 ERA) goes for the Cards. Carpenter is 8-0 in his last 10 trips to the mound.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are four games on the WNBA schedule for Sunday as the league closes out its regular-season schedule: Indiana at Connecticut, Washington at New York, Minnesota at Sacramento, and Los Angeles at Phoenix. The Mercury, who have wrapped up the top seed in the Western Conference, enter Sunday's game on a three-game winning streak. Phoenix beat Los Angeles 98-90 on August 27.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the drivers of Formula 1 hit the track in the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday. Jenson Button holds a 72-56 lead on Brawn-Mercedes teammate Rubens Barrichello in the drivers championship heading into the event, but Button has been kept off the top spot of the podium for the past five races. Sebastian Vettel won the Italian Grand Prix last year, while Heikki Kovalainen and Robert Kubica were second and third. Button was 15th in the race; Barrichello ended up in 17th.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's helpful tips

      Sunday, September 13

A little rest goes a long way

Rafael Nadal must have one hell of a rain dance. After a rain delay pushed the majority of his match against Fernando Gonzalez to Saturday, he easily dispatched of the No. 11 seed in straight sets. The day of rest was huge for a player with sore abdominal muscles and who missed most of the summer nursing tendinitis in both knees. Moving on to face No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro in a Sunday semifinal, Nadal (+400) is a well-rested bet to win the Grand Slam.

      The winning formula

Lewis Hamilton has to like his chances of bringing home the Italian Grand Prix Sunday. Hamilton, the defending Formula One champion, won the pole earlier this weekend, putting the odds firmly in his favor. Seven of the past 10 winners on the circuit have started from the front of the field. The McLaren driver is listed at -125 to claim the checkered flag, and is a heavy favorite.

      Bombs away

Saskatchewan hasn’t been perfect in its past four meetings with Winnipeg. It just seems that way. The Roughriders (+1) have owned the past two-plus years against the Blue Bombers, going 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS against them. Winnipeg has cracked the 20-point mark just once during the streak, including a 29-14 loss earlier this month. Saddle up with the Roughriders

      Shooting for the moon

The key for betting the over in WNBA games is trying to find teams ready to explode offensively, or who will counter an up-tempo attack with one of their own. You won’t find either of those factors when Indiana travels to play Connecticut Sunday. Three of the team’s past four meetings have gone under the total, and the pair are combining to shoot just 36 percent from the floor in their past five games.

      These Sox need changing

The Chicago White Sox bullpen would do anything for a rest. The past four games, the unit has been taxed for 23 1-3 innings as the team’s starters have fallen apart during the stretch run. And with the hot-hitting Angels (-140) digging in against Mark Buehrle, they should get to the beleaguered group sooner rather than later, and have no problem adding to their woes.

      Playing in the rain

Tampa Bay and Dallas both will likely face a similar opponent Sunday afternoon: thunderstorms. There is a 50 percent chance of rain according to weather.com, with such high humidity levels, that the 84 degree temperature will feel more like 94. With an total set at 39, brutal temperatures, sloppy field conditions and a slippery ball, the final score appears poised to fall well under the number.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-136, 9)

Boston is in the thick of the AL Wild Card race and is scrapping for every win it can get. Meantime, the Rays appear to have checked out a few weeks early.

Tampa Bay is an MLB-worst 1-9 in its past 10 games, averaginag a horrendous 3.3 runs per game during that stretch. The Red Sox, however, are hitting their stride offensively after a slow June and July, and are averaging 5.3 runs per game over their past 10.

The Rays are tanking and the Red Sox will take advantage.

            Pick: Red Sox -136

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres (+128, 8)

The Rockies would have a much easier time locking up the NL Wild Card if they could play the Padres every night.

Colorado is 9-4 againt San Diego this season, dominating at the plate and on the mound. The Rockies are averaging 5.5 runs per game this season against San Diego and have feasted on their pitching. But then the Padres haven’t been able to get batters out very easily. San Diego is 22nd in the majors in pitching, allowing 4.54 runs per game and opposing hitters to hit at a .261 clip.

The Colorado bats should take care of business.

            Pick: Rockies -136

              Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Streaking

              Homer Bailey (Cincinnati Reds)

The 23 year old can’t wait to get back on the mound. And the way he is pitching, how can you blame him?

Bailey (5-4, 5.60 ERA) has gone 3-0 in his past four starts, yielding just four earned runs over the past 27 innings. He also has struck out 27 over that span, and allowed just two home runs. The last time he took the mound, the right-hander allowed only one run over 5 2-3 innings against the Rockies.

"The fastball was there," Bailey said to the Associated Press. "That's what has been working the last couple of games."

              Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles)

The AL leader in loses is finally pitching like the Orioles No. 1 starter.

Guthrie (10-13, 4.96 ERA) has been fantastic in his past four starts. Over that span, he has gone 3-1, pitching 27 innings in which he has allowed only four earned runs. In his most recent start, a 7-0 win over Texas, he allowed just six hits in seven innings and struck out six against only one walk.

"The one consistent thing that I've had is that I've never stopped working, and I've never really lost the hope or the confidence that things would turn around at some point," Guthrie told the Associated Press.

              Slumping

              Chad Billingsley (Los Angeles Dodgers)

The Dodgers love to see their ace take the mound. But the recent results have been far from what they are accustom to.

Billingsley is 0-3 in his past four starts, allowing 14 earned runs over the past 23 innings. During that span, he has allowed a whopping nine walks and is fifth in the NL with 75 free passes.

"It's been a struggle right now for myself. I just have to keep going out there and battling, figure something out and try to get this thing rolling," he said to the Associated Press. "I always know what I want to do out there or I have a good idea. It's just a matter of executing."

              Carlos Carrasco (Cleveland Indians)

The 22 year old isn’t doing much to ensure a spot in the rotation next year.

Carrasco has made only two starts this season, but both have been forgettable. Over eight innings, he has allowed 11 earned runs on 17 hits. Even more disturbing, he has struck out just seven while walking six and giving up five home runs.

"My biggest problem was my fastball. It was all over the place," Carrasco told the Associated Press. “My other pitches were working, the slider and the change, just not the fastball."

                    TEXT FROM TORRE

Dodgers manager Joe Torre offered his congratulations to Derek Jeter in the New York Yankees star's preferred form of communication: via text message. Torre said he reached out to Jeter, who on Friday night broke the Yankees' 72-year-old career hits record held by Lou Gehrig. Torre was Jeter's manager in the Bronx from 1996-2007 and still holds fond feelings of the their time together. "I texted him. That's his favorite thing. I've got to get into that young stuff,'' Torre said.

                    WINNING WAYS

Boston's Josh Beckett won for first time in a month, a 9-1 victory over Tampa Bay in a game called by rain in the top of the sixth. Beckett allowed four hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings. It was an encouraging sign for Beckett after a four-game stretch in which he allowed 24 earned runs and 12 homers in 24 1-3 innings.

                    SIDELINED

Cardinals right-hander John Smoltz is being held out of his scheduled start Monday against the Florida Marlins because of shoulder tendinitis. Smoltz, 1-1 with a 3.27 ERA in four starts with St. Louis after being released by the Boston Red Sox, said he expects to miss only one start.

                    ROOKIE BALL

David Huff (10-9) won his third straight start, a 13-6 win over the Royals, improving to 5-1 in six outings since Aug. 9. The left-hander allowed three runs and seven hits over six innings, striking out a career-high six. He is the first Cleveland rookie to win 10 games since Ryan Drese went 10-9 in 2002.

                    READY TO PLAY

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is feeling much better after receiving two more injections in his back, and the All-Star is optimistic he will be able to return next weekend. Hamilton has not played since Sept. 2. He received an epidural for a pinched nerve and a cortisone shot for inflammation caused by what he described as a "small stress fracture'' in his back.

                    SURGERY

Astros left-hander Mike Hampton has scheduled his left shoulder surgery for Tuesday in New York City. Hampton was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14 and decided about two weeks later to have the season-ending surgery. Hampton has a significant partial thickness tear of his left rotator cuff.

                    STAT

Scott Podsednik hit the White Sox's first inside-the-park homer since Sept. 9, 2002, when Joe Borchard hit one in Chicago's 10-6 win at Kansas City.

                    SPEAKING

"That award is for guys who are highly touted throughout their minor league career and stuff like that, not guys who were let go and put on waivers. It sounds cliche, but it's the furthest thing from my mind. I'm just trying to help this team finish up strong.'' - Milwaukee third baseman Casey McGehee on his chances of winning the NL Rookie of the Year award after homering twice and driving in six runs in the Brewers' 9-2 victory over Arizona.

                    SEASONS

Francisco then tossed a chair at a fan in a lower box to the left of the Rangers' bullpen along the right-field line. The chair hit a man in the head and broke a woman's nose.

2008 - Francisco Rodriguez set the major league record with his 58th save this season, closing out the Los Angeles Angels' 5-2 win over Seattle. Rodriguez broke the mark of 57 set by Bobby Thigpen with the Chicago White Sox in 1990.

2008 - Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu homered to help Florida beat Washington 4-2 and the Marlins became the second major league team to have three infielders with 30 homers. Ramirez's homer was his 30th, and he joined first baseman Mike Jacobs (32) and second baseman Dan Uggla (30) for Florida this season. The Marlins joined the 2001 Oakland Athletics, who reached the mark with first baseman Jason Giambi (38), third baseman Eric Chavez (32) and shortstop Miguel Tejada (31).

Today's birthdays: Andy LaRoche 26; Rickie Weeks 27; Daisuke Matsuzaka 29

                              ************************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

                              13) Michigan-Notre Dame was excellent game to watch, but Irish lost in large part because Charlie Weis' clock management was awful. He has a running back named Allen who ran ball 21 times for 139 times, but he threw ball twice when he had ball and lead with under 3:00 left, allowing Michigan to save its timeouts. Seeing as Wolverines scored winning TD with 0:11 left, who would you blame?

                              12) Georgia's 41-37 win over South Carolina had more big special teams plays, both good and bad, than any game I can remember. Dawgs set the school record for kickoff return yardage in one game, and that was just in the first half. A historically low-scoring series was like a pinball game last night. Gamecocks have scored 44 points, allowed 44 in two games, two games that were as different as games can be.

                              11) Purdue lost 38-36 at Oregon, after winning 52-31 last week, so they are an early nominee for the most interesting team to watch. Love their QB Elliott, who appears to be a gritty leader who can run and pass.

                              10) Oregon scored two defensive TDs and won by two points; they are the only I-A team that scored two defensive TDs Saturday.

                              9) Paper in Miami did a report on how in two south Florida counties, Miami-Dade and Broward, there are 385 kids playing D-I football and a couple hundred more playing I-AA. Thats in two freakin' counties.

                              8) Odd thing is that Central Michigan had 15 of then, and ten kids go to Middle Tennessee State, where former Florida State QB Rick Stockstill is the head coach. There are seven D-I teams in Florida.

                              7) Florida State 19, Jacksonville State 9, but Seminoles scored two TDs in last 0:35 to win. Would have been the end of the Bowden era had the Seminoles lost this game. They have red-hot BYU up next in Provo.

                              6) How did Vanderbilt get in the SEC, and Northwestern in Big 11, when they are the only private school in either league?

                              5) North Carolina scored nine points in last 1:35 to steal a 12-10 win at UConn; winning points were on a safety, when UConn got called for a holding penalty in the end zone. Painful game to watch.

                              4) I think its funny that BYU is only team that will play games in both Las Vegas and New Orleans this season. Kind of a waste, ya think?

                              3) USC is not the third best team in America, not right now.

                              2) Pete Carroll is this generation's Barry Switzer; back in the 70's, there was no team that played with as much swagger as Oklahoma, and now it is USC that is that team, the team that goes anywhere, plays anyone and totally, 100% expects to win every game, which is why Carroll is 90-15.

                              1) There is nothing better as a coach than having players who show up knowing they're going to win that day, but USC's inexperience, both on its coaching staff and its two-deep depth chart, will appear eventually.
