    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, September 12

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Trojans take the field at Ohio State, the Dodgers battle the Giants, and the Sprint Cup Series hits the track at Richmond.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The top game on the college football schedule for Saturday has No. 8 Ohio State playing host to No. 3 Southern Cal. The Trojans trounced San Jose State 56-3 in their opener last week, and they beat the Buckeyes 35-3 when they met early last season. Ohio State held off Navy for a 31-27 victory last week, and they'll be looking to get some revenge on the Trojans on Saturday. Kickoff for the game is set for 8:00pm ET, with Southern Cal being pegged as the 7-point road favorites.

As for the rest of the teams ranked in the Top 10 on Saturday, it'll be Troy at No. 1 Florida (-36.5), No. 2 Texas (-32) at Wyoming, Florida International at No. 4 Alabama (-33.5), Houston at No. 5 Oklahoma State (-15), Syracuse at No. 7 Penn State (-28.5), No. 9 BYU (-18) at Tulane, and Eastern Washington at No. 10 California (no line). No. 6 Mississippi isn't back in action until September 19.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Vicente Padilla (2-0, 2.76 ERA in the NL) will take on Jonathan Sanchez (6-11, 4.03 ERA) on Saturday night as the Dodgers continue their series in San Francisco. Righthander Padilla has pitched Los Angeles to a win in each of his last three starts, surrendering just five earned runs over those 16 1-3 innings of work. The Giants are 0-2 in Sanchez's last two trips to the mound, but the lefthander has surrendered just two earned runs over his last 12 innings pitched.

Also on the National League slate for Saturday: Cincinnati at the Cubs, Atlanta at St. Louis, Washington at Florida, Pittsburgh at Houston, Milwaukee at Arizona, Colorado at San Diego, and the Mets at Philadelphia. Mike Pelfrey (10-10, 4.83 ERA) gets the ball for New York; the righthander beat the Cubs last time out, allowing one run in eight innings. Lefthander Jamie Moyer (12-9, 4.98 ERA) gets another start for Philly; Moyer has allowed four runs over his last 19 1-3 innings.

Meanwhile, the American League schedule for Saturday has Baltimore at the Yankees, Oakland at Minnesota, the White Sox at the Angels, Kansas City at Cleveland, Toronto at Detroit, Seattle at Texas, and Tampa Bay at Boston. The Rays will send Wade Davis (0-0, 1.29 ERA) to the hill; righthander Davis allowed one run over seven innings in his debut against the Tigers last time out. The Red Sox counter with ace Josh Beckett (14-6, 3.87 ERA), who last won on August 12.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The WNBA has three games on the schedule for Saturday, with Atlanta at Washington, Detroit at Chicago, and Seattle at San Antonio. The Storm fell 92-84 to Phoenix on Thursday night, but they've still locked up the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference standings. Seattle and San Antonio last met back on August 1, with the Storm pulling out an 85-82 win. Lauren Jackson had a team-high 23 points and 13 rebounds in that win, but she's been out with a sore back.

    Roaring around the track . . .

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series will finalize the field for the 2009 Chase on Saturday in the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Brian Vickers (13th place) and Kyle Busch (14th) are the drivers just below the Chase cutoff line heading into Saturday night's event, and they'll be looking for big finishes to boost their playoff chances. Vickers is at 25/1 on the Vegas odds chart to win the race, with Busch at 13/2. Jimmie Johnson, who has won three of the past five races at Richmond, is pegged as the 6/1 favorite to pick up the win.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's helpful tips

      Saturday, September 12

      Here, piggy, piggy

Nothing like a little swine flu to throw a team into disarray. No. 19 North Carolina (-4) will miss starting fullback Bobby Rome and defensive tackle Jordan Nix, who have been diagnosed with probable swine flu, for its game at Connecticut. The duo hasn’t practiced this week and that leads to speculation about the health of the rest of the team. The Huskies should be hungry for bacon bits, and bettors should look closely at the total of 45 points.

      Back to the bench

Eagles right tackle Shawn Andrews still won’t suit up for a regular season game. The two-time Pro Bowler has been out since Week 2 of last year with a herniated disk, but was expected to start the season opener at Carolina on Sunday. However, Andrews tweaked his back and will be benched against one of the better defenses in the league. The Eagles (-2) will start Winston Justice in his place, a move that will have the Panthers salivating at sending pressure to his side.

      Detroit rock city

Whenever the Shock see the Sky on their schedule, they must crack a smile. Detroit has taken all three meetings with Chicago this season, winning by an average of eight points per game. But when the teams meet for a fourth time on Saturday night, oddsmakers have installed the defending champion Shock as three-point underdogs on the road because Nikki Teasley is filling in for the injured Katie Smith. Still, Teasley's played well, and we’d be shocked if you didn’t take Detroit.

      Riding the pole

Mark Martin continues to show age is just a number. The 50 year old claimed his sixth pole of the season as NASCAR gears up for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Speedway. Martin has finished in the top 10 26 times at the track, and needs a good finish to secure a spot in the Chase for the Cup. Martin is listed at +500 to claim the checkered flag on Saturday night, and is good value at that number.

      Boiled over

Don’t overlook Purdue (+13) at Oregon Saturday night. The Big Ten has rightfully gotten a bad rap lately, but the Boilermakers are as scrappy as they come. Purdue was 2-0-1 ATS as a double-digit underdog last year, compared to Oregon, which was just 3-3 ATS as a double-digit favorite. New Purdue coach Danny Hope has the team’s offense back on track, which should be enough to at least give it the cover in Eugene.

        Six-pack for Saturday

-- Ravens covered 23 of last 29 as non-divisional home favorite.

-- Cowboys are 6-2 vs spread as a non-divisional road favorite.

-- Bengals covered four of last five season openers.

-- Rams are 0-8-1 vs spread in first road game the last nine years.

Saturday's List of 13: In a perfect world, where I made all decisions

        13) Pete Rose would be in the baseball Hall of Fame, Jerry Tarkanian would be in the basketball Hall of Fame. They both deserve it.

        12) NFL teams would lower ticket prices to reflect the tough economy.

        11) ESPN would show at least one NHL game every week. I mean, they show freakin' soccer games and poker; hockey deserves its own slot.

        10) Carrot Top would have his own talkshow. The man cracks me up.

        9) Baseball players' union would let the DH go away. Forever, except in spring training and the All-Star Game.

        8) Seattle would get another NBA team. They supported the last one, it would only be fair for them to get another chance.

        7) Internet poker would be legalized. If states can run lottery drawings, then let everyone have at it. Lets not legislate against fun.

        6) Bronx baseball fans would realize ARod is better than Derek Jeter; maybe not this season, but every other season.

        5) MLB Network would show show games from the Japanese Leagues, so we can see what they're like.

        4) The new baseball stadium in Minnesota would have a retractable roof so the home folks don't freeze every year in April and May.

        3) We need a college football playoff, if for no other reason than it will let teams play tougher games in September. We need better non-league games in September, not Charleston Southern, Wofford on schedules.

        2) In a perfect world, Audrina Patridge (google her, trust me) would be my next-door neighbor; she would visit often and want to watch ball on TV. We would order pizza and have much fun together. One can hope.

        1) Any human willing to shell out $280 could get NFL Sunday Ticket on his TV; right now, that can't happen, you have to have DirecTV, but we can hope that the greedy NFL owners will see the light someday.

              Saturday, September 12

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (-108, 8)

The hottest team in the NL West are the Rockies, but there’s nothing like a weekend set against the hated Giants to help the Dodgers get some breathing room.

Los Angeles is 7-5 against the Giants this year, including take two of the three most recent meetings. Plus, the Dodgers send their secret weapon to the mound: Vincente Padilla. The aging hurler has been a pleasant surprise for the blue and white, as the team has won each of his past three starts.

But then again the Dodgers' bats also have plenty of pop. Los Angeles is hitting .272 as a team, the third-best mark in the majors. The team also averages 4.7 runs per game with an OPS of .757.

The Giants have a solid pitching staff, but the Dodgers have the better team.

              Pick: Dodgers +103

Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals (-104, 8.5)

It’s easy to peg the Cardinals as an offensive juggernaut with sluggers Albert Pujols and Matt Holiday swinging hot sticks. But the dirty truth is that the team loves to fall under the total.

The Cardinals over/under record at home is a surprising 25-42-2 and 57-77-7 overall. Each of the Red Bird’s past three games have also fallen under the total, including six of the past 10.

Atlanta, meantime, is a virtual wash on the road, posting an over/under record of 35-36-1. However, the Braves have been locked in numerous low-scoring tilts the past two weeks. Overall, four of the team’s past five have gone under.

The Cardinals are trying to improve their playoff positioning and the Braves are trying to stay in the NL Wild Card chase. This has both teams playing postseason ball early, and expect lots of tight, low-scoring games with plenty of station-to-station baseball.

              Pick: Under 8.5

                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                Randy Wells (Chicago Cubs)

The way the season is going for Chicago, the 27 year old just might end the year as its best starter.

Wells (10-8, 2.45 ERA) has allowed only one earned run in his past 12 2-3 innings. For the month of September, he is 1-1 with a 0.71 ERA and six strikeouts and just two walks. The last time Wells took the mound he lasted six innings and gave up only one earned run to the Mets. The right-hander’s 2.45 ERA is the eighth-lowest in the NL, and figures to improve against the lowly Reds, a team Wells has shut down twice this year and is among the major’s worst against right-handed pitchers.

"He's pitched exceedingly well," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the Associated Press. "What a nice job, huh? Where would we be without this young man?"

                John Danks (Chicago White Sox)

Welcome to one of the few bright spots for the White Sox pitching staff this season.

Danks (12-9, 3.84 ERA) has been one of the team’s most consistent starters this year, putting together a streak of six straight quality starts during the season’s stretch run. During that span, Danks is 3-1, yielding just 12 earned runs over his past 40 2-3 innings. In his most recent start, he held Boston to just three runs over six innings, including four strikeouts and only one walk.

                Slumping

                Scott Richmond (Toronto Blue Jays)

The right-hander is in such a deep slump, he hasn’t seen the sun for weeks.

Richmond (6-9, 4.76 ERA) has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his past four starts. Over the past 16 innings, he has given up 16 earned runs on a staggering 24 hits. Even worse, he has struck out just 11 batters against eight walks over the same span. In Richmond’s most recent start, a 6-3 loss to the mediocre Twins, he allowed all the runs on eight hits over six innings.

"We've played a couple teams in the wild card. We're trying to be spoilers," Richmond told the Associated Press. "We're trying to stir the pot a little bit and fell short."

But Richmond’s been just short the past few months. He hasn’t won since June 24.

                Sergio Mitre (New York Yankees)

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for Mitre in his last start.

The 28 year old was tagged for 11 runs on 11 hits in just 4 1-3 innings of a 14-8 loss to the Blue Jays. Mitre is 3-2 this year, but has an absurd, 7.02 ERA and has lasted more than six innings just once this season. He is still feeling the effects of taking a line-drive to his right forearm late last month. It’s a good thing the Yankees score runs by the boat load.

                        SCOREBOARD

                        Saturday, September 12

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco (9:05 p.m. EDT). The NL West-leading Dodgers face the contending Giants in the middle game of a weekend series. Right-hander Vicente Padilla is scheduled to face San Francisco lefty Jonathan Sanchez.

                        STARS

                        Friday

-Clayton Mortensen, Athletics, limited the Twins to one run on five hits over six innings for his first big league win, 12-5 over the Twins.

-Jair Jurrjens, Braves, worked eight scoreless innings, overcoming another light offensive showing behind him in the Braves' 1-0 victory over the Cardinals.

-Aaron Hill, Blue Jays, had four hits and Toronto extended Detroit's slump with a 6-4 victory.

-Yorvit Torrealba, Rockies, hit a three-run double in the ninth inning off closer Heath Bell to lift Colorado to a 4-1 win over the Padres.

-Geovany Soto, Cubs, homered for the first time since July 10, and Chicago beat the Reds 6-4 for its first four-game winning streak in nearly two months.

-Ryan Braun, Brewers, hit his 100th career homer and drove in three runs to help the Brewers breakout of a week-long hitting slump with a 6-3 victory over the Diamondbacks

                        HIT MAN

Derek Jeter broke the New York Yankees' hits record held by Lou Gehrig for more than seven decades with an opposite-field single in the third inning against Baltimore. It gave Jeter 2,722 hits, one more than Gehrig, whose Hall of Fame career was cut short by illness in 1939. The captain kept right on going, too, with an RBI single in the fourth, but New York lost to Baltimore 10-4.

                        STALLED BY RAIN

Ichiro Suzuki's pursuit of another milestone was put on hold when the Seattle Mariners game against the Texas Rangers was postponed by rain. The perennial All-Star needs four hits to reach 200 for a ninth straight season, an accomplishment that would break a more than 100-year-old record. Suzuki is trying to break a record set by "Wee'' Willie Keeler, who had eight straight 200-hit seasons from 1894-1901.

                        SHUT IT DOWN

Baltimore pitcher Koji Uehara will miss the rest of the season because of a right elbow injury that has sidelined him since June. Uehara had been trying to rehab his elbow in time to return to the last-place Orioles this month as a reliever, a role he could fill next year. He finishes the season 2-4 with a 4.05 ERA in 12 starts.

                        TINY INVADER

Three days after Rafael Nadal was kissed by an intruder at the U.S. Open, there was an even stranger invader at the Tigers-Blue Jays game at Comerica Park - a 6-year-old boy. At the end of the seventh inning, as the Tigers were coming onto the field to warm up, the boy jumped out of the crowd and ran to the pitcher's mound. As his baseball cap fell off, he grabbed the ball that had been left for Tigers pitcher Brandon Lyon and raced back to the stands next to the Toronto dugout.

                        HOMERS

Ryan Braun became the second-fastest active player to hit 100 with his two-run shot in the first inning of Milwaukee's 6-3 victory over Arizona on Friday. It was his 29th of the season, and his first since Aug. 28. Philadelphia's Ryan Howard hit his 100th home run in his 325th game.

                        SNAPPED

Joel Pineiro lost for the first since since June 28 in a 1-0 defeat to the Braves. He had been 8-0 with a 3.09 ERA in 12 starts since his last loss against the Twins. He allowed one run on five hits in seven innings while benefiting from double play balls to end the second, third and fourth, matching his season high with seven strikeouts and walking two.

                        ON A ROLL

Joe Saunders won his fourth straight start, allowing three hits over seven innings and retiring his final 15 batters in the Angels' 7-1 win over the White Sox.

                        RELIEF, THE PAIN KIND

Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton received a third injection for a pinched nerve in his back, and the two-time All-Star won't be available for "at least seven days'' according to general manager Jon Daniels.

                        SPEAKING

"I didn't know that they were going to do that, so that sort of caught me off-guard. It's a special moment for me, it's a special moment for the organization. To get an opportunity to share it with my teammates was a lot of fun.'' - Yankees captain Derek Jeter on his teammates coming onto the field to congratulate him after he got his 2,722nd hit to pass Lou Gehrig for the Yankees' hit record in the third inning of a 10-4 loss to Baltimore.

                        SEASONS

                        Sept. 12

1932 - Brooklyn's Johnny Frederick hit his sixth pinch home run of the season, a major league record, in the ninth inning to spark the Dodgers to a 4-3 triumph over the Chicago Cubs at Ebbets Field.

1947 - Ralph Kiner of the Pittsburgh Pirates hit two home runs - his seventh and eighth in four games - for a major league record.

1962 - Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators set a record by fanning 21 Baltimore Orioles in a 16-inning game, which he won 2-1.

1976 - Minnie Minoso singled in three at bats as the designated hitter for the Chicago White Sox. At 53, he became the oldest player to get a hit in a regulation game.

1979 - Carl Yastrzemski got his 3,000th hit - a ground single off Jim Beattie - as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 9-2.

1984 - Dwight Gooden broke the rookie strikeout record, fanning 16 Pittsburgh Pirates to give him 251, six more than Herb Score had in 1955. Gooden broke the record by striking out Marvell Wynne in the sixth inning.

1996 - Seattle's Alex Rodriguez set a major league record for a shortstop with his 88th extra base hit in an 8-5 win over Kansas City.

1996 - Bernie Williams drove in eight runs with two home runs and a single to lead the New York Yankees to a 12-3 victory over Detroit.

2002 - Chicago outhit Cincinnati 22-17 but lost to the Reds 15-12. The last major league team to get 22 hits and lose a nine-inning game was Oakland on April 27, 1980. The Athletics lost that game 20-11 at Minnesota.

2006 - Bobby Abreu hit a three-run homer and three-run double during a nine-run first inning and finished with a career-high seven RBIs in the New York Yankees' 12-4 rout of Tampa Bay.

2006 - Atlanta's streak of 14 consecutive division titles ended when the New York Mets rallied to beat Florida 6-4.

2008 - Jorge Cantu hit his 25th homer in Florida's 2-1 victory over Washington, making the Marlins the first team in Major League history to have four infielders hit at least 25. Mike Jacobs (32), Dan Uggla (30), Hanley Ramirez (29) and Cantu have accounted for 116 of the Marlins 188 homers this season.

Today's birthdays: Clayton Richard 26; Maicer Izturis 29; Luis Castillo 34
