    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, September 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rays battle the Red Sox, the White Sox take on the Angels, and the Dodgers head north for a game against the Giants.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one college football game on tap for Friday night, with Colorado at Toledo. The Buffaloes will be looking to shake off a Week 1 loss on Friday; they were beaten 23-17 by Colorado State last time out. Toledo also comes into this Week 2 matchup with an 0-1 record, after they were blasted 52-31 by Purdue in their season opener. The oddsmakers like the Buffaloes' chances on the road, as they're set as 4-point favorites. The total for the matchup is pegged at 54 points.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games set for Friday, with Hamilton at Toronto and Calgary at Edmonton. The Tiger-Cats (5-4 straight-up, 7-2 against-the-spread) beat the Argonauts (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) 34-15 in their Labour Day clash last week, and they're 1-point road favorites for Friday night. The Stampeders (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS) blasted the Eskimos (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS) by a 32-8 score Monday night; Calgary is pegged as a 2-point road favorite for Friday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

James Shields (9-10, 4.02 ERA) will take on Jon Lester (12-7, 3.44 ERA) on Friday night as the Rays play the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Righthander Shields had his personal two-game winning streak snapped by the Tigers last time out, as he was knocked around for six runs over 6 1-3 innings of work. Lefthander Lester is coming off a win over the ChiSox in which he tossed seven scoreless innings and gave up just four hits; Boston is 5-0 in Lester's last five mound trips.

Elsewhere around the American League on Friday it'll be Kansas City at Cleveland, Toronto at Detroit, Baltimore at the Yankees, Seattle at Texas, Oakland at Minnesota, and the White Sox at the Angels. Chicago will go with Gavin Floyd (11-9, 3.84 ERA) in that last matchup, while Los Angeles counters with Joe Saunders (12-7, 4.97 ERA). Lefthander Saunders has won three consecutive starts, giving up just four earned runs in those 17 1-3 innings pitched.

Over in the National League on Friday the Dodgers will send Hiroki Kuroda (5-6, 4.15 ERA) to the mound in San Francisco to take on Matt Cain (13-4, 2.51 ERA) and the Giants. Righthander Kuroda is coming off a loss to the Padres in which he gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits over five innings of work. Righthander Cain beat the Brewers in his last start, allowing two runs in seven innings pitched. San Francisco sits at 4-1 over Cain's last five trips to the mound.

Rounding out Friday's NL slate: Cincinnati at the Cubs, Washington at Florida, Pittsburgh at Houston, Atlanta at St. Louis, Milwaukee at Arizona, Colorado at San Diego, and the Mets at Philadelphia. New York will go with Nelson Figueroa (2-4, 4.74 ERA) against the Phillies, who counter with Cole Hamels (8-9, 4.32 ERA). Lefthander Hamels followed a shutout win over the Giants with a loss to the Astros in his last start - surrendering four runs on eight hits over six innings.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, there are two games on the WNBA's dwindling regular-season schedule for Friday night, with Connecticut at Atlanta and Minnesota at Los Angeles. The Dream (17-15 SU, 20-9-3 ATS) will be looking to continue their lucrative run as they aim for the second seed in the Eastern standings. The Sun (15-17 SU, 14-16-2 ATS) are just trying to slip into the playoffs during this final week of the regular season. Connecticut took a 72-67 loss in Atlanta in their July 7 matchup.

      Friday, September 11

      Injury or compliment?

Boston pitcher Jon Lester has been bothered lately by a bulky groin. But the hurler still is expected to make his next scheduled start against the Rays Friday. Lester (12-7, 3.44 ERA), however, has struggled against Tampa Bay this year, allowing a combined 16 earned runs in just 21 1-3 innings. A bulky groin might be good with the ladies, but not Tampa Bay’s lineup. The Rays (+180) are a great value here.

      Center of attention

The Oklahoma Sooners need a new anchor on their offensive line. Brody Eldridge, who started at center against BYU, was moved back to tight end this week, where he will replace the injured Jermaine Gresham. Eldridge, who had four catches for 24 yards and a score last week, was moved out of necessity and leaves a void in the middle of the team’s line. The Sooners should still roll against Idaho State this weekend, but the move is a huge concern going forward.

      Passing fancy

Toledo (+3.5) should have an easy time putting together a game plan for Friday nights’ tilt with Colorado. Throw the ball. The Buffaloes conceded an average of nearly 11 yards per attempt last week and that has Toledo salivating. Rockets quarterback Aaron Opelt was 41-of-67 passing for 423 yards with three touchdowns against Purdue last week. Look for lots of passing, lots of points and a Toledo cover.

      The Real deal

Real Salt Lake hit the jackpot with the addition of striker Pablo Campos. The striker netted a pair of goals in his first two games in Utah after being acquired from San Jose. Now, adjusted to the altitude and the team’s attacking, 4-4-2 formation, Campos has the talent to be the difference after being named the MLS Player of the Week. Real Salt Lake (+115) is a real solid play on Saturday against the Fire.

Sabbatini behind the wheel at BMW

A changed course is exactly what Rory Sabbatini needed. The renovated course and beautiful weather at Cog Hill in Lemont, Ill., has proven challenging for the field of the BMW International. Sabbatini, a long-shot to win the event, is a co-leader at 5-under par. The beautiful, mild weather and altered course plays to the South African's strengths with its longer fairways and deeper bunkers. And with Sabbatini fuelled by getting snubbed for the President’s Cup earlier this week, he has the emotional boost every underdog needs.

        Quote of the Day

"This year for me is so personal. It's basically going to be my rookie season again. It hurts, but I turn the TV on, I read the paper, I listen to some of the things people say about me having the season that I had last year and me losing a step, things like that. They're trying to put me in a rocking chair already."
Allen Iverson, after signing with the Memphis Grizzlies

        ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) What was the ACC office thinking, putting Clemson-Georgia Tech on opposite the NFL opener? Bad scheduling move.

        12) Liberty Bowl in Memphis sold beer Sunday at a Memphis Tigers' football game for the first time; beer receipts totaled $114,576, which is over 40% of what Liberty Bowl officials hoped to generate to pay for the improvements they made to the stadium in the offseason.

        11) TMZ reports that Hugh Hefner's net worth is $43,232,096. See what happens when you wear a bathrobe all the time and don't have to buy clothes? Its good to be Hef.

        10) The quote in the box up above means one thing for Memphis players this season: if you want the ball, you better go rebound one of Iverson's many missed shots. He ain't going to be passing much this season.

        9) Of the top 10 NFL teams in sacks LY, seven made the playoffs.

        8) Godson Tom's team to watch in NFL this year: Houston Texans.

        7) Pittsburgh Steelers have a rookie WR named Mike Wallace, reminding us that when the Steelers play 4:15 games on CBS this fall, Wallace will be on the air before 60 Minutes. Just thought you'd like to know.

        6) Ichiro Suzuki is hitting .439 (69-157) in day games this season, with an on-base percentage of .473. He's going to be the first player to need an interpreter for his Hall of Fame speech.

        5) Vikings cut WR Wade, who led their team in receiving the last two years; conspiracy theorists are debating which coach decided to cut the productive Wade, Coach Childress or Coach Favre?

        4) This is the 11th year in a row the Cleveland Browns open at home.

        3) Horrendous coaching by Clemson staff in first quarter Thursday; have you ever seen a team give up two special teams TDs in the first quarter of a game? And both came off trick plays. Georgia Tech coaches made the Clemson coaches look like amateurs.

        2) First, Clemson tried a pooch kick, but Tech had a guy back to catch the ball, and he ran it back for a TD- never saw that before. Later, Tech ran the field goal team out to try a kick, but had a WR stay by sidelines and they threw him a pass for the easiest of TDs. A sandlot play.

        1) September 11 will forever be remembered for what happened back in 2001; I'm going to take a minute today and say a prayer for those people who lost their lives that day. Its the least I can do.

          SCOREBOARD

          Friday, September 11

Tampa Bay at Boston (7:10 p.m. EDT). The skidding Rays send James Shields to the mound against Jon Lester in the opener of a weekend series against the wild card-leading Red Sox at Fenway Park. Tampa Bay has lost eight straight to slip to the edge of the playoff race.

          STARS

          Thursday

-John Lackey, Angels, pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game of the season, helping Los Angeles to a 3-0 win over Seattle.

-Garrett Atkins, Rockies, hit a two-run homer and Colorado beat Cincinnati 5-1 for its seventh consecutive win.

-Adam Dunn, Nationals, hit his 36th homer to lead Washington to an 8-7 win over Philadelphia.

-Garret Anderson, Braves, drove in three runs in Atlanta's 9-7 victory at Houston.

-Nick Johnson, Marlins, drove in four runs and Florida routed the New York Mets 13-4.

-Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo, Royals, homered to power Kansas City to a 7-4 victory against Detroit.

-Lance Berkman, Astros, hit a three-run homer in Houston's 9-7 loss to Atlanta.

          ROLLING ROCKIES

Surging Colorado beat Cincinnati 5-1 on Thursday for its seventh consecutive win. The NL wild card leaders increased their cushion to 4 1/2 games over idle San Francisco and crept within two games of first-place Los Angeles in the NL West. The Dodgers also had the day off. By sweeping four games from the Reds, the Rockies wrapped up a 9-1 homestand - one of their best in franchise history.

          QUITE THE INTRODUCTION

Ian Desmond homered and drove in four runs in his major league debut, leading Washington to an 8-7 victory over Philadelphia. Desmond, a 24-year-old shortstop who was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, doubled in a run in the fourth and his three-run homer keyed a five-run fifth. He narrowly missed a home run in his first at-bat, flying out to deep center field.

          SURPRISE, SURPRISE

Alex Gordon and Alberto Callaspo homered, leading last-place Kansas City past Detroit 7-4 for a three-game sweep of the AL Central leaders. It was the first three-game sweep of an American League team at home this season for the Royals. They've won four straight overall for the first time since June 12-16.

          WORTH NOTING

Ichiro Suzuki went 0 for 4 in Seattle's 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels and needs four hits to reach the 200 mark for the ninth consecutive season, which would break the major league mark he shares with Willie Keeler. ... Minnesota has not won consecutive games since a three-game winning streak from Aug. 30-Sept. 1.

          SPEAKING

"We've been getting outplayed by second division teams. We don't put nobody away.'' - Phillies manager Charlie Manuel after Philadelphia's 8-7 loss to the Washington.

            This Day in Baseball

On September 11 in Baseball History...

1875 - The first baseball game played with women professionals takes place in Springfield, Illinois. The diamond is half-sized and a nine-foot high canvas surrounds the entire field. The uniforms are similar to the male version, except the pants are shorter.

1886 - Connie Mack makes his Major League debut with Washington, catching flawlessly and contributing a single as the Nationals defeat the Phillies 4-3.

1903 - A new National Agreement signed by the National Association of minor league clubs officially organizes professional baseball under one comprehensive set of rules.

1912 - Eddie Collins stole six bases for the Philadelphia Athletics as they defeated the Detroit Tigers, 9-7. Collins stole six more in a game on Sept. 22.

1918 - The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Carl Mays to win the World Series in six games.

1922 - The Yankees play their farewell home game in the Polo Grounds. An estimated crowd of 40,000 overflows the stadium with another 25,000 turned away. Joe Bush beats the Philadelphia A's in the opener, 10-3, and Waite Hoyt takes the second game 2-1. This is the last regular season American League game at the Polo Grounds as the Yankees will open Yankee Stadium in 1923.

1923 - After leadoff hitter Whitey Witt reaches first on a controversial single, Boston pitcher Howard Ehmke retires the next 27 batters for a 3-0 win. Ehmke has now given up just one hit in his last two games.

1956 - Frank Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds tied a rookie record for home runs in a season with his 38th homer of the year. The blow came off Steve Ridzik of the New York Giants and the Reds went on to an 11-5 victory.

1959 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4, ending reliever Roy Face's winning streak at twenty-two games. It was Face's only loss of the season as he finished with an 18-1 record.

1974 - It took the St. Louis Cardinals 25 innings - 7:04 - to beat the New York Mets. A record 202 batters went to the plate, as Felix Millan and John Milner had twelve appearances apiece.

1976 - Minnie Minoso comes to bat for the White Sox after a twelve-year hiatus. He goes hitless in his three at bats against Frank Tanana, but his appearance makes him one of a handful of Major League players to play in four decades. His at bat in 1980 will match him with Nick Altrock as a five-decade player.

1980 - In a 6-5 win over the Cubs, Montreal's Ron LeFlore steals his 91st base of the season and Rodney Scott steals his 58th, breaking the Major League-record for stolen bases by teammates in one season. Lou Brock and Bake McBride set the record with the 1974 Cardinals.
1985 - Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds became the career hit leader with his 4,192nd hit to break Ty Cobb's record. Rose lined a 2-1 pitch off San Diego pitcher Eric Show to left-center field for a single in the first inning. It was the 57th anniversary of Ty Cobb's last game in the majors.

1987 - New York Mets third baseman Howard Johnson, with thirty-four homers, became the first National League infielder to hit thirty home runs and steal thirty bases in the same season. His 30th stolen base came in the fourth inning of a 6-4, 10-inning loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (+138, 7.5)

The Royals haven’t been able to beat many teams this season. But when it comes to the Indians, they have held their own.

Kansas City is 7-8 againt the Tribe and has won four straight overall, including a sweep of the AL Central-leading Tigers. And don’t look for the Indians to turn things around anytime soon. Cleveland has lost eight of its past 10 and is doing it in poor fashion, allowing an average of more than six runs per game in those loses.

Not that the Royals should need that many to win.

With ace Zach Greinke, who has allowed three earned runs or less in four starts against Cleveland, Kansas City should need minimal run support to pick up a win in Ohio.

                  Pick: Royals -130

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs (-209)

If there’s one thing the Reds don’t want to see on the mound, it’s a right-handed pitcher. Good luck against Rich Harden, guys.

Cincinnati is batting an MLB-low .239 against righties and averaging a pathetic 3.05 runs per game. Even worse, the squad has only 168 doubles. In its past 10 games overall, the team is averaging only 4.3 runs per game.

And it’s not like the Reds have done well against Chicago. Cincinnati is just 4-8 against the Cubs this season and are just 2-4 in the Windy City. Meantime, the Cubs are starting to heat up. Chicago has won four of five, including a three-game sweep of the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

The Reds need a miracle to survive a losing season, and don’t expect them to get any hope at Wrigley Field.

                  Pick: Cubs -209

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants)

The right-hander just keeps pitching better as the race for the NL Wild Card tightens.

Cain (13-4, 2.51 ERA) has allowed just 11 runs over the past 35 1-3 innings and hasn’t lost since early August. His ERA is among the lowest in the league and he leads the senior circuit with four complete games. The only flaw so far for Cain is his control. He is sometimes erratic and is 12th in the NL with 65 walks.

But getting to first base against Cain, no matter what way, is no easy task.

"He's bull strong," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the Associated Press. "He's had some tough luck, but he's more of a pitcher now and he's keeping his composure out there."

                    Jair Jurrjens (Atlanta Braves)

The 23 year old has pitched as well as any player in the majors over his past five starts. But with the pathetic run support he receives, you’d never know it.

Jurrjens (10-10, 2.93 ERA) has strung together five straight quality starts, lasting at least seven innings four times during that span. In his most recent outing, the Reds managed just three runs on three hits over seven innings against the hurler.

The right-hander has won only once since July 22, but he keeps his team in every game and should give the Braves a chance again on Friday.

"I don't know what to say anymore,” he told the Associated Press. “It's getting frustrating, considering how important these games are."

                    Slumping

                    Kevin Millwood (Texas Rangers)

If the Rangers have any chance of catching Boston for the AL Wild Card, Millwood (10-9, 3.77 ERA) has to be better.

The 34 year old has allowed at least five earned runs in three of his past four starts and hasn’t lasted past the sixth inning since July 1. In his past four starts overall, Millwood has yielded 17 earned runs on 27 hits in just 22 1-3 innings.

He also has walked a staggering 14 batters over that span.

"I just pitched bad. I don't know what to say," Millwood told the Associated Press. "I thought pitch selection was bad, location was bad."

                    Brian Tallet (Toronto Blue Jays)

The 31 year old should have stayed in the bullpen.

Tallet (6-9, 5.31 ERA) has been touched in each of his two recent starts, giving up a whopping nine earned runs in just 10 innings. In his most recent outing against the Yankees, he allowed five earned runs on eight hits over just five innings. The key for Tallet is his command. The former LSU standout is fourth in the AL with a staggering 67 walks.

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants [10:15 PM ET]

Dodgers: The Dodgers haven’t been anything special in their last 27 games going 14-13. They have won 38 of their last 56 games against National League West opponents. Randy Wolf was scheduled to start, but he’s been scratched because of elbow irritation. Instead Hiroki Kuroda will make his second start since returning from the DL. Kuroda went on the DL after being hit on the head by a line drive on Aug. 15 while pitching against the Diamondbacks. In his first start back, the 34-year-old right-hander gave up three earned runs, four hits and three walks in five innings last Sunday, at home versus San Diego. “I was very satisfied with the way he came through it,” said Dodgers manager Joe Torre. “I thought he competed very well. I thought his stuff was good, but he might have just been a little bit rusty as far as command.”

The Under is 13-3-2 in the Dodgers’ last 18 division games.
The Under is 17-5-1 in Los Angeles’ last 23 games when facing a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Casey Blake (hamstring) is day-to-day.
                              Jim Thome (heel) is day-to-day.
                              Randy Wolf (elbow) is day-to-day.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Giants (-$1.40, O/U 7 over -$1.30): The Giants desperately need to cut into the Dodgers’ NL West lead trailing by 6 ½ games. San Francisco is 20-6 in its last 26 games at AT&T Park when meeting an opponent with a winning road mark. Matt Cain has established himself as one of the top right-handers in baseball with a 13-4 record and 2.51 ERA. The Giants, however, are 3-8 the past 11 times Cain has started against the Dodgers. Although pitching well, Cain had gone seven starts without a victory until his last outing. He recorded his 13th win last Saturday holding the Brewers to two runs on four hits in six innings during a 3-2 victory. San Francisco is 17-4 in Cain’s last 21 home outings. Cain is 6-2 at AT&T Park with a 2.53 ERA. The under has cashed in 11 of Cain’s last 15 overall starts.

The Under is 7-1 in San Francisco’s past eight games

Key Injuries - Tim Lincecum (back) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (OVER - Total of the Day)
