Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Rays: The Rays are on a season-worst seven game losing streak. Tampa Bay has lost seven of its past eight games to New York. The Rays are 24-58 in their last 82 games at Yankee Stadium. The Rays are minus slugging first baseman Carlos Pena, the American Leader in home runs. He’s out for the season after breaking two fingers in this series after being struck by a pitch from CC Sabathia. Jeff Niemann is a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year and gets the start here. His 3.67 ERA is the best among American League rookie starting pitchers. Niemann has held opponents to two earned runs or less 16 times this season. Tampa Bay has won 14 of Niemann’s last 20 starts. Niemann tangled with Tigers ace Justin Verlander in his last start last Friday, giving up one run on six hits in 7 2/3 innings.

The Rays are 1-7 in their last eight games when facing a right-handed starter.
The Under has cashed 18 of the past 26 times in Tampa Bay’s road games against a right-handed starter.

Key Injuries - Carlos Pena (finger) is out.

Yankees (-$1.45, O/U 10 over -$1.15): The Yankees have already surpassed last year’s win total. They’ve won 12 of their last 15 games and 42 of their past 55 home contests. Mark Teixeira is batting above .330 with four homers and 11 RBIs in eight home games versus the Rays this season. Joba Chamberlain (8-5, 4.41 ERA) gets the start. He was 3-0 with a 0.83 ERA going into All-Star break. Since then the right-hander is 3-3 with a 7.96 ERA in six starts with foes batting .330 against him. The Yankees have won 17 of Chamberlain’s last 21 home starts. The Yankees have been limiting Chamberlain’s innings to keep him fresh. He’s pitched just three innings in each of his past two outings. Closer Mariano Rivera has gotten a save and a win during the past two nights and may be unavailable to pitch having thrown a combined 27 pitches.

The Under is 17-7-1 in the Yankees’ last 25 home games against a team with a losing road record.

Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies [8:40 PM ET]

Reds: The Reds entered this series riding a seven-game win streak, but have lost the first two games of this series. Cincinnati is 8-2 in its last 10 road contests. The Reds are 13-4 in its last 17 overall games. Brandon Phillips went 0-for-4 last night, but the hot-hitting second baseman is still batting .393 in his last nine games with six RBIs. Bronson Arroyo (12-12, 4.23 ERA) is going for his ninth consecutive quality start. Arroyo has surrendered three or fewer runs and gone at least six innings in 18 of his 28 starts this season. He held the Braves to one run on six hits in seven innings during his last start this past Friday in Atlanta. Arroyo struck out four and walked three, throwing 99 pitches. The Reds, however, are 0-8 in Arroyo’s last eight starts when going against National League West Division clubs.

The Under is 11-1-1 in the Reds’ last 13 road games versus a team with a winning record.

Key Injuries - Jay Bruce (wrist) and Willy Taveras (quadriceps) are on the DL.

Rockies (-$1.65, O/U 9.5): The Rockies are riding their highest point ever, 19 games above .500 for the first time in franchise history. They have won five in a row. Colorado has achieved this by being dominant at Coors Field. The Rockies are 36-16 in their last 52 home games. They are 61-32 since Jim Tracy became manager and have beaten Cincinnati in 14 of the past 17 meetings, including six of the last seven at Coors. Jason Hammel (8-7, 4.41 ERA) hasn’t pitched well at home, but Colorado still has won eight of his last nine home starts. Hammel is 2-3 with a 6.29 ERA at Coors compared to 6-5 with a 3.11 ERA on the road. The Rockies could be without infielders Troy Tulowitzki and Ian Stewart, both of whom have back injuries. Franklin Morales has five straight saves, while filling in for injured closer Huston Street.

The Under is 12-5-2 in the Rockies’ last 19 games versus a team with a losing record.

Detroit Shock at Minnesota Lynx (E, 160)

The WNBA playoffs are approaching. Sometimes it's easy to tell which teams are aware of that.

The Shock were 9-14 on Aug. 21 but have won seven of their last eight games (6-1-1 against the spread) to climb from sixth to third in the Eastern Conference. The Lynx were 10-7 on July 27 but have lost 11 of their last 14 games (4-9-1 ATS) to fall from second to fifth in the Western Conference.

The Shock are 3-1 without second-leading scorer Katie Smith, who remains sidelined with a back injury. The Lynx are 9-16 without leading scorer Seimone Augustus, who has been out since June with a knee injury.

The Shock have made the playoffs every year since 2003. The Lynx have missed the playoffs every year since 2005.

Detroit has won six of the last eight meetings, all of which have seen the total go over.

Pick: Detroit. The over is worth a look as well.

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for September 9, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

1. Quick Hits

#2 Andy Murray (last year's finalist) got blitzed at the U.S. Open in straight sets by Marin Cilic of Croatia.
Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal advance. After Nadal's win, a man jumped on the court, kissed him, and told him he loved him. He got arrested.
Derek Jeter had another 0-fer. He still needs 4 hits to set the all time Yankee hit record. Jeter didn't talk with the media after the game, a rarity for the team captain.
And you thought it was just the players? A part-owner in the NHL Nashville Predators, William ''Boots'' Del Biaggio III, was sentenced to more than 8 years in prison for bilking banks and investors out of millions. He used some of the money to pay off gambling debts.

2. 9/9/09

Some wackos predicted that 9/9/09 would signal the end of the world. If we're still here, let's mark the date with something a tad more benign.
Let's salute the most famous #9's in sports. Ted Williams, Roger Maris, Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. And let's not forget the great # 99, Mark Gastineau, I mean Wayne Gretzky.

3. Do Not Pass Go

At this point Mets fans can only laugh about this season. Toward that end check out the Wall Street Journal's version of Monopoly. It's called MetsSloppily. Instead of jail, you get to go directly to the disabled list. But in this game, if you really play for the Mets, you do get to pass Go, and you get to collect your entire salary!

Few stories have drawn the response of yesterday's item about the Lingerie Football League opening its season. Jerrythegeek twittered: " Were there any uniform malfunctions?"
An attorney wondered if there was a brief in the game? Nope, there were tarts.... I mean torts.
And Steve F. wondered if there were male cheerleaders? No Steve, the males were all in the stands drooling.
I'm so glad my readers take their sports seriously!
