    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, September 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cards look for a road win in Milwaukee, the Angels host the Mariners, and the Rays close out a road series in New York.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Adam Wainwright (17-7, 2.68 ERA) will get the ball for the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon as they take on the Brewers and Jeff Suppan (6-8, 4.97 ERA) in Milwaukee. Righthander Wainwright picked up a shaky win over the Pirates in his last start, allowing six earned runs on nine hits over five innings of work. Righthander Suppan is coming off a no-decision against the Giants in which he surrendered two runs (both unearned) on two hits over his 5 2-3 innings.

Also on the National League schedule for Wednesday: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, San Diego at San Francisco, Florida at the Mets, Atlanta at Houston, Cincinnati at Colorado, the Dodgers at Arizona, and Philadelphia at Washington. Cliff Lee (5-2, 2.81 ERA in the NL) will be looking to snap his two-game losing skid for the Phillies; lefthander Lee has allowed 12 earned runs over his last eight innings of work. Garrett Mock (3-7, 5.63 ERA) will counter for the Nationals on Wednesday.

Over in the American League on Wednesday the Rays and Yankees will finish out their four-game set at Yankee Stadium, with Jeff Niemann (12-5, 3.67 ERA) taking on Joba Chamberlain (8-5, 4.41 ERA). Righthander Niemann allowed just three earned runs over 14 2-3 innings in his last two outings (both against the Tigers), but settled for a no-decision in both starts. Righthander Chamberlain pitched just three innings in each of his last two starts as he rests for the playoffs.

Rounding out the Junior Circuit slate for Wednesday: Texas at Cleveland, Minnesota at Toronto, Baltimore at Boston, Detroit at Kansas City, Oakland at the White Sox, and Seattle at the Angels. Ian Snell (4-1, 4.89 ERA in the AL) will take the mound for the Mariners in that contest; righthander Snell has won each of his last four starts for Seattle. The Angels counter with Jered Weaver (14-5, 3.79 ERA); the righthander held the Royals to one run in seven innings last start.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Finally, there's just one game on the WNBA's schedule for Wednesday, with Detroit at Minnesota. The Shock (16-15 straight-up, 14-15-2 against-the-spread) are gunning for the second seed in the Eastern standings, while the Lynx (13-18 SU, 15-16 ATS) are just trying to push their way into the Western playoff picture in the final week of the regular season. The Lynx and Shock last met on the court on July 31 in Detroit, with the home team pulling out a 91-83 win in that matchup.

      Bettor's best friend : Today's helpful tips

      Wednesday, September 9

      Nine is fine

Wednesday's numeric date is 9-9-09, one of just 12 days this century in which the month, date and year are the same. For those into numerology, the total is 9.0 for the Texas-Cleveland, Seattle-Los Angeles Angels and Florida-New York Mets games.

      Roger, over and out

Robin Soderling ended Rafael Nadal's French Open title reign earlier this year. Think he might be able to do the same to Roger Federer at the U.S. Open? Think again. Soderling is 0-11 lifetime against Federer and never has won a set. Federer is -225 to win in straight sets.

      Up and Adam

Much was made of Chris Carpenter's one-hitter Monday, but the Cardinals actually have a hotter pitcher than Carpenter, as far as bettors are concerned: Adam Wainwright.

Carpenter is 11-0 in his last 13 starts, but the Cardinals lost both his no-decisions in that span. St. Louis has won the last six starts made by Wainwright, who is 5-0 with a 2.27 ERA during his hot streak. The Cards are -191 at Milwaukee.

      What's that Snell?

If you're looking for an underdog that could provide a big return, Ian Snell and the Mariners may be worth a look. Snell has won his last four starts, posting a 2.49 ERA and finally finding a groove since returning from the disabled list just over a month ago.

Snell beat Justin Verlander at +245 in the first of his four straight wins and won at Oakland at +124 in his last outing. The Mariners are +192 at the Los Angeles Angels.

      Hottie alert

The crowds at Arthur Ashe Stadium have taken to 17-year-old Melanie Oudin, the 70th-ranked American who has run off a string of upsets to advance to the quarterfinals. The support could waver if the men in the audience take a good look at her opponent, Denmark delight Caroline Wozniacki. The books say Oudin's run is over; Wozniacki is -125 to win in straight sets.

      Not getting the Joba done

Has any pitcher in recent memory been more coddled that Joba Chamberlain? The fireballing righthander of the New York Yankees has his work monitored more closely than security breaches by the federal government.

Chamberlain first had extra days put between starts and now has strict limits on how long he works in order to stay as close to 160 innings for the season. In four starts since the "Joba Rules" were enforced, he is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.27 WHIP.

Because he pitches for the Yankees, the price on Chamberlain routinely is -200 or more - an awfully large number for someone pitching a third of the game. Chamberlain and the Yanks are -145 vs. Tampa Bay.

      Notable quotable

"I think it would be accurate to say that we had the meeting, that we didn't make any progress and that there are no future meetings scheduled."

-- NBA commissioner David Stern, characterizing to NBA TV the result of a meeting Tuesday between league representatives and the referees, who have been without a contract since Sept. 1. The first preseason game is Oct. 1 and could have replacement referees.

        Six-pack for Wednesday

-- 20-year old Madison Baumgarner made his big league debut for the Giants Tuesday; he allowed two runs in 5.1 IP with a no-decision.

-- Baumgarner started because Tim Lincecum was scratched with back issues, which is potentially very bad news for the Giants.

-- Tampa Bay's bullpen has five losses in team's last six games.

-- A's had 20 hits, with ex-White Sox Ryan Sweeney tying career high with four, A's scored early and often in an 11-3 win at Chicago.

-- The CFL schedule maker has a sense of humor; all four games on this week's schedule are same matchups as last week, just in the other city. That's something you don't see in most leagues.

-- Texas' Marlon Byrd went 7-9 in twinbill Tuesday, raising average from .276 to .286; its hard to raise an average that much in September.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on late summer night

        13) If you've earned $1,000,000 on the PGA Tour this season, it would seem like a damn good year, but you'd be 78th on the money list.

        12) Top 125 on the money list keep their cards for next year; right now, Harrison Frazar ($542,685) is #125, a mere $1,528 ahead of Chris Riley.

        11) At some point down the road, people that own/run the Tampa Rays are going to look back at 2008-9 and wish they had tried harder to win.

        10) A high school kid in Colorado, who is already committed to kick for the Minnesota Gophers next year, booted a 67-yard field goal in a game this week. Granted, it came at high altitude, but 67 yards is 67 yards.

        9) Interesting situation in Oakland, where the Raiders traded the #1 pick in the 2011 draft for Richard Seymour, but the player hasn't reported to the Raiders yet. Seymour won't get paid if he doesn't play, but what is going to happen to the draft choice if he doesn't play?

        8) Can a pitcher's control be too good? Cliff Lee hasn't walked anyone in his last four starts; in his last three outings, he's allowed 25 hits, 14 runs in just 15 IP. Maybe he needs to dust some hitters off the plate.

        7) Guy named Gael Montils lost to Rafael Nadal in US Open last night; he looks like the character Swish in the classic basketball movie Fast Break; Swish was the girl who played on Gabe Kaplan's Cadwallader U team. If Gael played hoop, guess he'd play for Iona or St Mary's, seeing as they're the two D-I teams with the nickname Gaels.

        6) Matt Holliday hit a dramatic two-run homer in top of ninth vs Trevor Hoffman as the Cardinals won again, 4-3 in Milwaukee. Holliday is still hitting over .380 since getting traded to the Redbirds.

        5) Of the four major league pitchers who've thrown the lowest %age of first-pitch strikes this season, three pitch for the Mets (Rich Hill is the fourth). I'm thinking there will be a new pitching coach in Queens in '10.

        4) NBA refs and the league are at odds over how much of a reduction the referees' budget will suffer; it is possible the league will use replacements to ref games, since exhibition games start in three weeks. I'm not a big fan of NBA officials, but where exactly are the new refs going to come from?

        3) When I was a kid, the only two guys in my neighborhood who drove Cadillacs were the funeral director and the beer distributor.

        2) I didn't know Lee Corso had a stroke last May; the 74-year old Corso worked hard at rehab and was back on the air for GameDay Saturday; it was great to read the story and see that his health has improved a lot, so much so that he expects to work a full schedule this fall. Excellent.

        1) Five weeks until my Vegas trip; if anyone has suggestions on stuff I should do while in America's Favorite City, let me know.

          STARS

          Tuesday

-Matt Holliday, Cardinals, hit a two-run homer off Trevor Hoffman in the top of the ninth to lift St. Louis to a 4-3 win at Milwaukee.

-Javier Vazquez, Braves, struck out nine in seven shutout innings and Atlanta beat Houston 2-1.

          - Erick Aybar, Angels, hit a two-out single in the 10th inning to give Los Angeles a 3-2 victory over Seattle

-Jack Cust, Athletics, hit a three-run homer to help Oakland on its way to an 11-3 win at the Chicago White Sox.

-John McDonald, Blue Jays, hit a three-run homer to key Toronto's six-run sixth inning in a 6-3 win over Minnesota.

-Marlon Byrd, Rangers, had seven hits in Texas' doubleheader sweep of Cleveland. The Rangers won the first game 11-9 and the second 10-5.

          HOMER-HAPPY

The Phillies beat the Nationals 5-3 on the strength of five solo homers - and became the 12th team in big-league history with four 30-homer players. ... The Red Sox hit a season-high six home runs on Tuesday night, and David Ortiz hit his record-tying 269th homer as a designated hitter to lead Boston to a 10-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. ... The Yankees' Nick Swisher hit his second home run of the game to give New York a 3-2 win over the Rays. The switch-hitting Swisher connected from both sides of the plate, winning it with a left-handed shot off Dan Wheeler.

          ALTITUDE

Colorado beat Cincinnati 3-1 Tuesday night, giving the Rockies their fifth straight win and moving the NL wild-card leaders 19 games above .500 (79-60) for the first time in franchise history.

          FLYING FISH

Thanks to two-run homers from Ramirez and Maybin, the Marlins kept up their surprising playoff push Tuesday night with a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets. The Marlins, who opened the season with a major league-low $37 million payroll, are 5 1/2 games behind Colorado for the NL wild card.

          DRAWKCAB

After taking consecutive series from the Yankees and Angels earlier this summer, the White Sox promptly lost two of three to Cleveland. They are 15-17 against the league's three last-place teams - Oakland, Baltimore and Kansas City - after falling to the Athletics 11-3 Tuesday night.

          ALL BETTER

The Texas Rangers' offense limped into a doubleheader against Cleveland having gone scoreless in 15 straight innings - then scored 21 runs to beat the Indians 11-9 and 10-5.

          CRAZY EIGHT

Chicago tied a major league record with eight consecutive hits to start a game in a 9-4 victory over the Pirates. The most recent team to do it was the New York Yankees, on Sept. 25, 1990, against Baltimore.

          SPEAKING

"I don't think we've quit at all. I still see effort, I still see energy. Guys get depressed a little bit when you've lost as many games as we've lost, but for me - without overstating it - it takes a heck of lot of character to continue to come back against a first-place club.'' - Royals manager Trey Hillman after his team ended Detroit's six-game win streak with a 7-5 victory.

            This Day in Baseball

On September 9 in Baseball History...

1914 - George Davis of the Boston Braves pitched a 7-0 no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies.

1918 - In Game Four of the World Series, which is being played early because of World War I, Babe Ruth bats in two runs on a triple in the fourth and pitches seven scoreless innings before the Cubs tie it in the eighth. But Ruth and the Red Sox get the win when Phil Douglas throws away the game, first by a wild pitch, then an error.

1922 - Baby Doll Jacobson hit three triples to lead the St. Louis Browns to a 16-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

1936 - The New York Yankees clinched their eighth American League pennant with a doubleheader sweep of the Cleveland Indians, 11-3 and 12-9. The Yankees finished 19 1/2-games ahead of the Detroit Tigers for the largest margin in Yankee history.

1945 - Dick Fowler of the Philadelphia Athletics pitched a 1-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Browns.

1948 - Rex Barney of the Brooklyn Dodgers pitched a 2-0 no-hitter against the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.

1953 - Mickey Mantle's two-run home run off Chicago's Billy Pierce caps a seven-run fifth inning, as New York wins 9-3 at Yankee Stadium. Returning to center field after the fifth, Mantle is photographed blowing a huge bubble with a wad of gum. Manager Casey Stengel will publicly rebuke the Mick, who will apologize for the indiscretion. However, Mantle does get an endorsement fee from the Bowman Gum Company.

1965 - Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitched his fourth no-hitter, a perfect game, against the Chicago Cubs. Koufax fanned 14 in the 1-0 victory while Cubs pitcher Bob Hendley allowed only one hit - a double by Lou Johnson.

1970 - Bowie Kuhn hands Denny McLain his third suspension of the year, this one is for carrying a gun, plus other unspecified charges, and ends McLain's season with a 3-5 record.

1977 - In the second game of a doubleheader in Boston, Tigers rookies Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell debut together. They will hold down the second base and shortstop jobs in Detroit for a record nineteen years.

1987 - Nolan Ryan struck out sixteen to pass 4,500 for his career as the Houston Astros beat the San Francisco Giants 4-2. Ryan struck twelve of the final thirteen batters and fanned Mike Aldrete to complete the seventh for his 4,500th strikeout.

1993 - Baseball joins the other major sports and expands the postseason as well as its divisions. The measure passes by a 27-1 vote with Texas, one of two teams other than the new expansion teams never to go to the postseason by the old setup, as the lone dissenter.

1997 - Mark McGwire becomes only the second player in history to hit fifty home runs in consecutive seasons (Babe Ruth did it twice) and the first to hit fifty in a season with two different teams. McGwire, who started the season with the A's, hits his 50th of the year for the Cardinals in a 7-6 loss to the Giants. In 1998 and 1999, McGwire will become the first player to hit fifty home runs three- and four-straight years.

1998 - The New York Yankees officially clinched the American League East title, the earliest in American League history, beating the Boston Red Sox 7-5. The Yankees improved to 102-41, 20 1/2-games ahead of second-place Boston.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals (+180, 8.5)

The Phillies are the defending World Series champions and have a six-game lead in the NL East. They also were just swept in a four-game series by the Houston Astros, which manager Charlie Manuel finds more relevant.

"I hear some of them (players) talk, some of them saying, 'We play better when we have to,' and stuff like that, like when there's more pressure," Manuel told the team's web site. "I find that hard to believe when I see us play how we played. ... That doesn't register with me.

"Last year is dead and gone, man."

The Phillies are scuffling with the bats, managing four runs or less in their last 13 games. They have some mound issues as well.

J.A. Happ missed Monday's start with a strained oblique muscle. And Cliff Lee is suddenly hittable, having allowed 12 earned runs and 19 hits - including four homers - in just eight innings over his last two starts, both losses. Lee had given up 13 earned runs in his previous 10 starts.

                Pick: Washington

San Diego Padres at San Francisco Giants (-170, 8)

There are two trends tracking for the Giants - one that started just over a month ago and one that has lasted all season.

For most of the year, lefthander Barry Zito has had as much trouble finding consistency as he has had locating the plate. But he has been sharp at home lately, helping keep the Giants in the NL wild card race.

The Giants have won the last four home games started by Zito, who is 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA in those games. He is averaging 1.8 walks per nine innings in that span, well below his season ratio of 3.67.

San Francisco also is a solid 14-7 in home series finales, including a 4-2 mark in games started by Zito. Meanwhile, San Diego has lost nine of its last 10 games at Pac Bell Park.

                Pick: San Francisco

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Scott Feldman (15-4, 3.62 ERA), Texas Rangers

Feldman has been on a great run this season, particularly on the road. Only four of his 15 wins have come in white uniforms and his home ERA is almost two full runs higher than his away.

Feldman had no answers for his road success after his latest win.

“There is really nothing to it,” Feldman told the Associated Press following the 5-1 win over the Orioles last week. “Just being the benefactor of playing on a good team. I do everything the same.”

The Rangers have won six of his last seven starts and the hurler has given up just one run in his last three outings. Keep in mind too, that 12 of the Rangers’ 32 wins have come with Feldman on the bump.

Bronson Arroyo (12-12, 4.23), Cincinnati Reds

You can get an upset stomach trying to follow this streaky hurler. His career has been filled with more up and down results than a kid on ritalin in a bouncy castle.

But over his last seven starts he owes a 1.89 ERA, he’s pitched at least seven innings each time out and the under is 4-2-1.

He might be worth a small play on the road against the Rockies on Wednesday.

                  Slumping

Kevin Hart (4-5, 4.67), Pittsburgh Pirates

We really didn’t want to pick on the Pirates – MLB teams do that enough as is. But with some many hot starters going today (Wandy Rodriguez, Jon Garland and Ian Snell to name a few that didn’t make the cut), we were left with few hurlers in dire times.

Hart fits the bill perfectly. He’s given up 24 runs (21 earned) in his last 28 innings and the Bucs have won just won of his last five starts.

Hart was disappointed following his last start - a 14-7 setback to the Cards.

“It’s one of those things where when we score six in the bottom of the inning, you’ve got to go out there and have a shutdown inning,” he told reporters. “These guys picked me up tonight, and I didn’t do the same.”
